An electric field (100 V/cm at 230°C and 150°C) has been applied to ammonium perchlorate (AP)/polystyrene (PS) propellant mixtures in order to understand the low temperature decomposition behavior of the propellant. The charge-carrying species is anionic in nature at 230°C, which could be ClO4−, but is cationic at 150°C, which could be either NH4+ or H+. These results are parallel to that observed for pure ammonium perchlorate (AP) pellets [1]. The burning rate (r' ) of the propellant was found to follow the same trend as that for the thermal decomposition of the propellant on application of an electric field. At 150°C Image was higher at the −ve electrode than at the +ve electrode, but at 230°C just the opposite was observed. Kinetic studies have confirmed that the decomposition of the orthorhombic AP follows two mechanism corresponding to E = 30 kcal mol−1 (180–230°C) and E = 15 kcal mol−1 (150–180°C).

Silicon dioxide films are extensively used as protective, barrier and also low index films in multilayer optical devices. In this paper, the optical properties of electron beam evaporated SiO2 films, including absorption in the UV, visible and IR regions, are reported as a function of substrate temperature and post-deposition heat treatment. A comparative study of the optical properties of SiO2 films deposited in neutral and ionized oxygen is also made.

Substrate temperature and ion bombardment during deposition have been observed to modify significantly the optical and structural properties of dielectric thin films. Single‐layer films of CeO2 have been deposited by electron beam evaporation with simultaneous oxygen‐ion bombardment using a Kaufman broad beam ion source and maintaining the substrates at elevated temperature. A systematic study has been made on the influence of (a) substrate temperature in the range ambient to 300 °C, (b) ion energy in the range 300–700 eV, and (c) ion current density 100–220 μA/cm2 on optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, inhomogeneity, packing density, and structural properties. The refractive index increased with in increase in substrate temperature: ion energy up to 600 eV and ion current density. Homogeneous, absorption free and high index (2.48) films have been obtained at 600 eV, 220 μA/cm2 and at substrate temperature of 300 °C. The packing density of the films was observed to be unity for the same deposition conditions. Substrate temperature with simultaneous ion bombardment modified the structure of the films from highly ordered to fine grain structure.

NiTi thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering of an alloy (Ni/Ti:45/55) target at different deposition rates and substrate temperatures were analyzed for their structure and mechanical properties. The crystalline structure, phase-transformation and mechanical response were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Nano-indentation techniques, respectively. The films were deposited on silicon substrates maintained at temperatures in the range 300 to 500 degrees C and post-annealed at 600 degrees C for four hours to ensure film crystallinity. Films deposited at 300 degrees C and annealed for 600 degrees C have exhibited crystalline behavior with Austenite phase as the prominent phase. Deposition onto substrates held at higher deposition temperatures (400 and 500 degrees C) resulted in the co-existence of Austenite phase along with Martensite phase. The increase in deposition rates corresponding to increase in cathode current from 250 to 350 mA has also resulted in the appearance of Martensite phase as well as improvement in crystallinity. XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline film structure is strongly influenced by process parameters such as substrate temperature and deposition rate. DSC results indicate that the film deposited at 300 degrees C had its crystallization temperature at 445 degrees C in the first thermal cycle, which is further confirmed by stress temperature response. In the second thermal cycle the Austenite and Martensite transitions were observed at 75 and 60 degrees C respectively. However, the films deposited at 500 degrees C had the Austenite and Martensite transitions at 73 and 58 degrees C, respectively. Elastic modulus and hardness values increased from 93 to 145 GPa and 7.2 to 12.6 GPa, respectively, with increase in deposition rates. These results are explained on the basis of change in film composition and crystallization. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd

We investigate the influence of the ferromagnetic layer on the magnetic and transport properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO)/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) bilayers. The temperature dependent dc magnetization study reveals the presence of magnetic anisotropy in YBCO/LSMO bilayer as compared to the pure YBCO layer. The ac susceptibility study on YBCO/LSMO bilayers reveals stronger pinning and the temperature dependent critical current is found to be less prone to temperature. Besides, the current (I) dependent electrical transport studies on YBCO/LSMO exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting T-c with increase in I and it follows I-2/3 dependence in accord with the pair breaking effect. The higher reduction of superconducting T-c in YBCO/LSMO is believed to be due to the enhanced pair-breaking induced by the spin polarized carriers being injected into the superconductor. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films were deposited on fused quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation method at room temperature. The films were annealed at different temperatures in ambient air. The surface morphology/roughness at different annealing temperatures were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallinity of the film has improved with the increase of annealing temperature. The effect of annealing temperature on optical, photoluminescence and Raman spectra of TiO2 films were investigated. The refractive index of TiO2 films were studied by envelope method and reflectance spectra and it is observed that the refractive index of the films was high. The photoluminescence intensity corresponding to green emission was enhanced with increase of annealing temperature. The peaks in Raman spectra depicts that the TiO2 film is of anatase phase after annealing at 300 degrees C and higher. The films show high refractive index, good optical quality and photoluminescence characteristics suggest that possible usage in opto-electronic and optical coating applications. This paper reports the structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe-Ga thin films deposited using DC magnetron sputtering technique on Si(100) substrate kept at different temperatures. Structural studies employing X-ray diffraction and TEM revealed the presence of only disordered A2 phase in the film. Columnar growth of nanocrystalline grains from the substrate was observed in the film deposited at room temperature. With increase in substrate temperature the grain size as well as surface roughness was found to increase. The magnetization of the films deposited at higher substrate temperatures were Found to saturate at lower magnetic held as compared to the room temperature deposited Film. Coercivity was found to decrease with increasing substrate temperature upto a minimum value of similar to 2 Oe for the film deposited at 450 degrees C and with further increase in substrate temperature it was found to increase. A maximum magnetostriction of 200 mu-strains was also observed for the film deposited at 450 degrees C. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering technique on p-type silicon(100) substrates held at temperatures in the range 303-673 K. The influence of substrate temperature on the core level binding energies, chemical bonding configuration, crystallographic structure and dielectric properties was investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies and Fourier transform infrared transmittance data confirmed the formation of stoichiometric films with anatase phase at a substrate temperature of 673 K. The films formed at 303 K were nanocrystalline with amorphous matrix while those deposited at 673 K were transformed in to crystalline phase and growth of grains in pyramidal like structure as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy respectively. Metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors were fabricated with the configuration of Al/TiO2/Si structures. The current voltage, capacitance voltage and conductance voltage characteristics were studied to understand the electrical conduction and dielectric properties of the MOS devices. The leakage current density (at gate voltage of 2 V) decreased from 2.2 x 10(-6) to 1.7 x 10(-7) A/cm(2), the interface trap density decreased from 1.2 x 10(13) to 2.1 x 10(12) cm(-2) eV(-1) and the dielectric constant increased from 14 to 36 with increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K.

A novel flexible alloy substrate (Phynox, 50 mm thick) was used for the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods via a low-temperature solution growth method. The growth of ZnO nanorods was observed over a low temperature range of 60-90 degrees C for a growth duration of 4 hours. The as-synthesized nanorods were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for their morphology, crystallinity, microstructure and composition. The as-grown ZnO nanorods were observed to be relatively vertical to the substrate. However, the morphology of the ZnO nanorods in terms of their length, diameter and aspect ratio was found to vary with the growth temperature. The morphological variation was mainly due to the effects of the various relative growth rates observed at the different growth temperatures. The growth temperature influenced ZnO nanorods were also analyzed for their wetting (either hydrophobic or hydrophilic) properties. After carrying out multiple wetting behaviour analyses, it has been found that the as-synthesized ZnO nanorods are hydrophobic in nature. The ZnO nanorods have potential application possibilities in self-cleaning devices, sensors and actuators as well as energy harvesters such as nanogenerators.

In this study, the influence of the spatial and temporal variability of upwelling intensity and the associated biological productivity observed during different phases of summer monsoon along the southwestern continental margin of India (SWCMI) on the delta C-13 and delta O-18 of the inorganic biogenic carbonate shells was investigated. Multispecies benthic bivalve shells (1-5 mm) separated from ten surface sediment samples of SWCMI (off 12 degrees N, 10 degrees N and 9 degrees N) collected during the onset (OSM) and peak (PSM) phase of the summer monsoon of 2009 were analysed for delta C-13 and delta O-18. Sea surface temperature along the study region indicates prominent upwelling in PSM than in OSM. A comparison of analytical and predicted values for delta O-18 in the bivalve shells confirmed their in situ origin during both the sampling periods. During PSM, the delta C-13 values in the benthic bivalve shells were more depleted in C-13 than during OSM which recorded lower values of delta C-13 in dissolved inorganic carbon of bottom waters expected in the study region in PSM due to the upwelled waters, high surface productivity and the associated high degradation of the organic matter in the subsurface and bottom waters. However, this depletion of delta C-13 was not observed in benthic bivalve shells obtained from 10 degrees N, since it is influenced by high export fluxes of carbon from the Cochin estuary since early monsoon months.

Quinuclidine grafted cationic bile salts are forming salted hydrogels. An extensive investigation of the effect of the electrolyte and counterions on the gelation has been envisaged. The special interest of the quinuclidine grafted bile salt is due to its broader experimental range of gelation to study the effect of electrolyte. Rheological features of the hydrogels are typical of enthalpic networks exhibiting a scaling law of the elastic shear modulus with the concentration (scaling exponent 2.2) modeling cellular solids in which the bending modulus is the dominant parameter. The addition of monovalent salt (NaCl) favors the formation of gels in a first range (0.00117 g cm-3 (0.02 M) < TNaCl < 0.04675 g cm-3 (0.8 M)). At larger salt concentrations, the gels become more heterogeneous with nodal zones in the micron scale. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been used to characterize the rigid fibers (

In this paper we have used the method of characteristics developed for two dimensional unsteady flow problems to study a simplified axial turbine problem. The system consists of two sets of blades —the guiding vanes which are fixed and the rotor blades which move perpendicular to these vanes. The initial undisturbed constant flow in the system is perturbed by introducing a small velocity normal to the rotor blades to simulate a slight constant inclination. The resulting perturbed flow is periodic after the first three cycles. We have studied the perturbed density distribution throughout the system during a period.

In order to study the effect of the Coriolis force due to solar rotation on rising magnetic flux, the authors consider a flux ring, azimuthally symmetric around the rotation axis, starting from rest at the bottom of the convection zone, and then follow the trajectory of the flux ring as it rises. If it is assumed that the flux ring remains azimuthally symmetric during its ascent, then the problem can be described essentially in terms of two parameters: the value of the initial magnetic field in the ring when it starts, and the effective drag experienced by it. For field strengths at the bottom of the convection zone of order 10,000 G or less, it is found that the Coriolis force plays a dominant role and flux rings starting from low latitudes at the bottom are deflected and emerge at latitudes significantly poleward of sunspot zones.

The spectra of glycine, its addition compounds and other amino-acids exhibit Raman lines in the region from 3250 cm.−1 to 2500 cm.−1 It has been shown that these lines cannot be assigned to N-H...O stretching vibrations, where the N atom has the covalency of three, but to N+-H...O stretching vibration where the N atom has the covalency of four. Using the data obtained with triglycine sulphate which has the largest number of N+-H...O bonds and whose H bond lengths are known, the correlation curve giving the relation between the N+-H...O stretching frequencies and the corresponding H bond lengths has been drawn. Using this correlation curve, the N+-H...O stretching frequencies appearing inα-glycine,γ-glycine, diglycine hydrochloride, diglycine hydrobromide,l-asparagine monohydrate anddl-alanine have been satisfactorily accounted for on the basis of the known hydrogen bond lengths in these substances.
