Auxiliary coils for generating magnetic field gradients for a Faraday magnetometer

A set of coils has been designed and constructed for generating magnetic field gradients for a Faraday magnetometer. We have obtained a gradient of magnitude -1 1 kOe m-' (8.75 x lo5 A m-') in an air gap of 42 mm for a current of 12 A passing through the coils.

A criterion for existence of low frequency pure surface magnetoplasmon modes in the Faraday configuration

The low frequency surface magnetoplasmon-type polaritons in the Faraday configuration will propagate as generalized surface modes if 4ε∞/(ε∞ − 1)2 greater-or-equal, slanted μ2 and as pure surface modes if this inequality is reversed. The possibility of using the low frequency surface waves as a suitable probe for measuring the carrier concentration of a given sample is discussed.

Michael Reactions of the Anions generated by the Metal-Ammonia Reduction of Benzoic Acids.

A novel method for the construction of carboncarbon bonds is described in which anions obtained by the metal-ammonia reduction of benzoic acid and its derivatives undergo ready Michael reaction with methyl crotonate to give the addition products.

A note on the analysis of the dispersion equation for surface magnetoplasmons in the Faraday configuration

The analysis of the dispersion equation for surface magnetoplasmons in the Faraday configuration for the degenerate case of decaying constants being equal is given from the point of view of understanding the non-existence of the “degenerate modes”. This analysis also shows that there exist well defined “degenerate points” on the dispersion curve with electromagnetic fields varying linearly over small distances taken away from the interface.

Vinyl radical induced Michael additions: Total synthesis of (±)-seychellene

A new strategy for the total synthesis of (±)-seychellene which involves (i) a regiospecific construction of a bicyclo(2.2.2)octene moiety having a methyl group at the bridgehead and (ii) a vinyl radical induced intramolecular Michael addition is described.

Tandem Michael reaction. Synthesis of bridged diketones

Addition of NaOMe, NaOEt, or NaOPr(i) to dispironaphthalenone 1 resulted in the formation of diketones 4a-c and 5a-c. The structure assigned to 4a was confirmed by conversion to the known hemiacetal 3. Similar addition of carbon nucleophiles like diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, methyl cyanoacetate, and ethyl cyanoacetate afforded diketones 4d-g. Formation of these compounds has been rationalized.

Potassamide induced in situ alkylation of 5,6-dihydroisoquinoline with allyl bromide and Michael acceptors

Potassamide induced in situ alkylation of 4-cyano-3-methoxy-1-methyl-5, 6-dihydroisoquinoline (1a) with allyl bromide gives the 5-allyl- and 5,9-diallyl-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (1c and 1d), isoquinoline derivative 2 and 4-allyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-3(2H)-one (3a). However, potassamide induced in situ alkylation of In with buten-2-one, mesityl oxide and acrylonitrile results in the formation of only 5-alkylated 5,6-dihydroisoquinoline derivatives 1e-g along with fully aromatised compound 2.

Michael addition of masked thiolates to conjugated systems in aqueous media promoted by ammonium tetrathiomolybdate

Thiolates generated in situ by the action of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate on alkyl halides, thiocyanates and disulfides undergo Michael addition to alpha,beta-unsaturated esters, nitriles :and ketones in water under neutral conditions.

Enantiospecific synthesis of functionalised bicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes from 10-bromocarvones via tandem intermolecular alkylation-intramolecular Michael addition sequence

A simple and convenient tandem methodology for the enantiospecific generation of functionalised bicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes 9,14-18, via intermolecular alkylation of Michael donors with 10-bromocarvones 7, 10 and 11, followed by intramolcular Michael addition, is achieved. An unsuccessful attempt for the extension of the methodology for a possible short enantiospecific approach to AB-ring system 22 of taxanes via the allyl bromide 21, is also described.

Catalytic enantioselective construction of quaternary stereocenters by direct vinylogous Michael addition of deconjugated butenolides to nitroolefins

A direct vinylogous Michael reaction of gamma-substituted deconjugated butenolides with nitroolefins has been developed with the help of a newly identified quinine-derived bifunctional catalyst, allowing the synthesis of densely functionalized products with contiguous quaternary and tertiary stereocenters in excellent yield with perfect diastereoselectivity (>20 : 1 dr) and high enantioselectivity (up to 99 : 1 er).
