An imaging technique is developed for the controlled generation of multiple excitation nano-spots for far-field microscopy. The system point spread function (PSF) is obtained by interfering two counter-propagating extended depth-of-focus PSF (DoF-PSF), resulting in highly localized multiple excitation spots along the optical axis. The technique permits (1) simultaneous excitation of multiple planes in the specimen; (2) control of the number of spots by confocal detection; and (3) overcoming the point-by-point based excitation. Fluorescence detection from the excitation spots can be efficiently achieved by Z-scanning the detector/pinhole assembly. The technique complements most of the bioimaging techniques and may find potential application in high resolution fluorescence microscopy and nanoscale imaging.

Eclogites from paragneiss in the Korean Peninsula are characterized by a peak pressure assemblage of garnet + omphacite + quartz + rutile, that is overprinted by multiphase symplectites involving augite, amphibole, orthopyroxene, ilmenite and plagioclase and by a similar high-pressure assemblage with a pronounced absence of the omphacite component in clinopyroxene formed during the peak and orthopyroxene in the retrograde stage. Eclogites were metamorphosed at a minimum pressures of not, vert, similar 20–23 kbar at temperatures of not, vert, similar 840–1000 °C, equivalent to a crustal depth of not, vert, similar 70–75 km, whereas high-pressure granulite in Late Paleozoic rocks underwent metamorphic conditions of not, vert, similar 18–19 kbar at not, vert, similar 950 °C with a minimum crustal depth of not, vert, similar 60–65 km. The presence of the eclogites and high-pressure granulite suggests deep-seated subduction of crustal complexes with metamorphism at different crustal levels. The eclogites were exhumed quickly resulting in near- isothermal decompression. On the other hand, the multistage exhumation of the high-pressure granulites suggests retrograde overprinting after initial decompression. The similarity of these petrological characteristics, metamorphic conditions and also the regional structural styles with those of the Sulu belt (China) strongly suggests the existence of a Permo-Triassic Alpine-type “Korean collision belt” in Far East Asia. This model provides a better understanding of the paleogeograpic evolution of Permo-Triassic East Asia, including a robust tectonic correlation of the Korean collision belt with the Qinling–Dabie–Sulu collision belt.

A new method of sensing the abnormal output voltage conditions of a single phase UPS system is presented, which provides the information almost instantaneously, so that a fast load transfer can be initiated. A continuous monitoring of the UPS output instantaneous voltage is used so that any under/over voltage, transients, or waveform distortion present can be detected.

The photochemical and redox properties of two newly synthesized tetrahydroquinoxaline-based squaraine dyes (SQ) are investigated Using femto- and nanosecond laser flash photolysis, pulse radiolysis, and cyclic voltammetry. In acetonitrile and dichloromethane, these squaraines exist its monomers in the zwitterionic form (lambda(max) approximate to 715 nm, epsilon(max) approximate to 1.66 x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1) in acetonitrile). Their excited sin-let states ((1)SQ*) exhibit a broad absorption hand at 480 nm, with singlet lifetimes of 44 and 123 ps for the two dyes. Both squaraines exhibit poor intersystem crossing efficiency (Phi(ISC) < 0.001). Their excited triplet states ((3)SQ*), however, Ire efficiently generated by triplet-triplet energy transfer Using triplet excited 9,10-dibromoanthracene. The excited triplet states of the squaraines dyes exhibit it broad absorption hand at ca. 560 nm (epsilon(triplet) approximate to 4.2 x 10(4) M-1 cm(-1)) and undergo deactivation via triplet-triplet annihilation and ground-state quenching processes. The oxidized forms of the investigated squaraines (SQ(center dot+)) exhibit absorption maxima at 510 and 610 nm.

In this paper we introduce a nonlinear detector based on the phenomenon of suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR). We first present a model (an array of 1-bit quantizers) that demonstrates the SSR phenomenon. We then use this as a pre-processor to the conventional matched filter. We employ the Neyman-Pearson(NP) detection strategy and compare the performances of the matched filter, the SSR-based detector and the optimal detector. Although the proposed detector is non-optimal, for non-Gaussian noises with heavy tails (leptokurtic) it shows better performance than the matched filter. In situations where the noise is known to be leptokurtic without the availability of the exact knowledge of its distribution, the proposed detector turns out to be a better choice than the matched filter.

The design of present generation uncooled Hg1-xCdxTe infrared photon detectors relies on complex heterostructures with a basic unit cell of type (n) under bar (+)/pi/(p) under bar (+). We present an analysis of double barrier (n) under bar (+)/pi/(p) under bar (+) mid wave infrared (x = 0.3) HgCdTe detector for near room temperature operation using numerical computations. The present work proposes an accurate and generalized methodology in terms of the device design, material properties, and operation temperature to study the effects of position dependence of carrier concentration, electrostatic potential, and generation-recombination (g-r) rates on detector performance. Position dependent profiles of electrostatic potential, carrier concentration, and g-r rates were simulated numerically. Performance of detector was studied as function of doping concentration of absorber and contact layers, width of both layers and minority carrier lifetime. Responsivity similar to 0.38 A W-1, noise current similar to 6 x 10(-14) A/Hz(1/2) and D* similar to 3.1 x 10(10)cm Hz(1/2) W-1 at 0.1 V reverse bias have been calculated using optimized values of doping concentration, absorber width and carrier lifetime. The suitability of the method has been illustrated by demonstrating the feasibility of achieving the optimum device performance by carefully selecting the device design and other parameters. We report development of gas microstrip detectors using thin film and lithography techniques. The detectors were tested for their performance for X-rays (5.9 keV) and a maximum gas gain of similar to 13,000 and best resolution of similar to 12% was obtained. Factors affecting gain and resolution were investigated. The detectors were tested for their one-dimensional position sensitivity. Meandering resistive strips were used for charge division method. A position resolution of 0.48 mm was obtained.

Electronic properties of graphene have been studied more extensively than its photonic applications, in spite of its exciting optical properties. Recent results on solar cells, light emitting diodes and photodetectors show its true potential in photonics and optoelectronics. Here, we have explored the use of reduced graphene oxide as a candidate for solution processed ultraviolet photodetectors. UV detection is demonstrated by reduced graphene oxide in terms of time resolved photocurrent as well as photoresponse. The responsivity of the detectors is found to be 0.12 A/W with an external quantum efficiency of 40%. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3640222]

This paper presents the design and performance analysis of a detector based on suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR) for the detection of deterministic signals in heavy-tailed non-Gaussian noise. The detector consists of a matched filter preceded by an SSR system which acts as a preprocessor. The SSR system is composed of an array of 2-level quantizers with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) noise added to the input of each quantizer. The standard deviation sigma of quantizer noise is chosen to maximize the detection probability for a given false alarm probability. In the case of a weak signal, the optimum sigma also minimizes the mean-square difference between the output of the quantizer array and the output of the nonlinear transformation of the locally optimum detector. The optimum sigma depends only on the probability density functions (pdfs) of input noise and quantizer noise for weak signals, and also on the signal amplitude and the false alarm probability for non-weak signals. Improvement in detector performance stems primarily from quantization and to a lesser extent from the optimization of quantizer noise. For most input noise pdfs, the performance of the SSR detector is very close to that of the optimum detector. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Herein we report the first applications of TCNQ as a rapid and highly sensitive off-the-shelf cyanide detector. As a proof-of-concept, we have applied a kinetically selective single-electron transfer (SET) from cyanide to deep-lying LUMO orbitals of TCNQ to generate a persistently stable radical anion (TCNQ(center dot-)), under ambient condition. In contrast to the known cyanide sensors that operate with limited signal outputs, TCNQ(center dot-) offers a unique multiple signaling platform. The signal readability is facilitated through multichannel absorption in the UV-vis-NIR region and scattering-based spectroscopic methods like Raman spectroscopy and hyper Rayleigh scattering techniques. Particularly notable is the application of the intense 840 nm NIR absorption band to detect cyanide. This can be useful for avoiding background interference in the UV-vis region predominant in biological samples. We also demonstrate the fabrication of a practical electronic device with TCNQ as a detector. The device generates multiorder enhancement in current with cyanide because of the formation of the conductive TCNQ(center dot-).

We present a closed-form continuous model for the electrical conductivity of a single layer graphene (SLG) sheet in the presence of short-range impurities, long-range screened impurities, and acoustic phonons. The validity of the model extends from very low doping levels (chemical potential close to the Dirac cone vertex) to very high doping levels. We demonstrate complete functional relations of the chemical potential, polarization function, and conductivity with respect to both doping level and temperature (T), which were otherwise developed for SLG sheet only in the very low and very high doping levels. The advantage of the continuous conductivity model reported in this paper lies in its simple form which depends only on three adjustable parameters: the short-range impurity density, the long-range screened impurity density, and temperature T. The proposed theoretical model was successfully used to correlate various experiments in the midtemperature and moderate density regimes.

The detection efficiency of a gaseous photomultiplier depends on the photocathode quantum efficiency and the extraction efficiency of photoelectrons into the gas. In this paper we have studied the performance of an UV photon detector with P10 gas in which the extraction efficiency can reach values near to those in vacuum operated devices. Simulations have been done to compare the percentage of photoelectrons backscattered in P10 gas as well as in the widely used neon-based gas mixture. The performance study has been carried out using a single stage thick gas electron multiplier (THGEM). The electron pulses and electron spectrum are recorded under various operating conditions. Secondary effects prevailing in UV photon detectors like photon feedback are discussed and its effect on the electron spectrum under different operating conditions is analyzed. We consider sound source mechanisms involving the acoustic and instability modes of dual-stream isothermal supersonic jets with the inner nozzle buried within an outer shroud-like nozzle. A particular focus is scattering into radiating sound waves at the shroud lip. For such jets, several families of acoustically coupled instability waves exist, beyond the regular vortical Kelvin-Helmholtz mode, with different shapes and propagation characteristics, which can therefore affect the character of the radiated sound. In our model, the coaxial shear layers are vortex sheets while the incident acoustic disturbances are the propagating shroud modes. The Wiener-Hopf method is used to compute their scattering at the sharp shroud edge to obtain the far-field radiation. The resulting far-field directivity quantifies the acoustic efficiency of different mechanisms, which is particularly important in the upstream direction, where the results show that the scattered sound is more intense than that radiated directly by the shear-layer modes.
