This correspondence presents an algorithm for microprogram control memory width minimization with the bit steering technique. The necessary and sufficient conditions to detect the steerability of two mutually exclusive sets of microcommands are established. The algorithm encodes the microcommands of the sets with a bit steering common part and also extends the theory to multiple (more than two) sets of microcommands.

In this paper, we have first given a numerical procedure for the solution of second order non-linear ordinary differential equations of the type y″ = f (x;y, y′) with given initial conditions. The method is based on geometrical interpretation of the equation, which suggests a simple geometrical construction of the integral curve. We then translate this geometrical method to the numerical procedure adaptable to desk calculators and digital computers. We have studied the efficacy of this method with the help of an illustrative example with known exact solution. We have also compared it with Runge-Kutta method. We have then applied this method to a physical problem, namely, the study of the temperature distribution in a semi-infinite solid homogeneous medium for temperature-dependent conductivity coefficient.

The advent of large and fast digital computers and development of numerical techniques suited to these have made it possible to review the analysis of important fundamental and practical problems and phenomena of engineering which have remained intractable for a long time. The understanding of the load transfer between pin and plate is one such. Inspite of continuous attack on these problems for over half a century, classical solutions have remained limited in their approach and value to the understanding of the phenomena and the generation of design data. On the other hand, the finite element methods that have grown simultaneously with the recent development of computers have been helpful in analysing specific problems and answering specific questions, but are yet to be harnessed to assist in obtaining with economy a clearer understanding of the phenomena of partial separation and contact, friction and slip, and fretting and fatigue in pin joints. Against this background, it is useful to explore the application of the classical simple differential equation methods with the aid of computer power to open up this very important area. In this paper we describe some of the recent and current work at the Indian Institute of Science in this last direction.

This paper presents the new trend of FPGA (Field programmable Gate Array) based digital platform for the control of power electronic systems. There is a rising interest in using digital controllers in power electronic applications as they provide many advantages over their analog counterparts. A board comprising of Cyclone device EP1C12Q240C8 of Altera is used for developing this platform. The details of this board are presented. This developed platform can be used for the controller applications such as UPS, Induction Motor drives and front end converters. A real time simulation of a system can also be done. An open-loop induction motor drive has been implemented using this board and experimental results are presented.

This paper recasts the multiple data path assignment problem solved by Torng and Wilhelm by the dynamic programming method [1] into a minimal covering problem following a switching theoretic approach. The concept of bus compatibility for the data transfers is used to obtain the various ways of interconnecting the circuit modules with the minimum number of buses that allow concurrent data transfers. These have been called the feasible solutions of the problem. The minimal cost solutions are obtained by assigning weights to the bus-compatible sets present in the feasible solutions. Minimization of the cost of the solution by increasing the number of buses is also discussed.

Window technique is one of the simplest methods to design Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters. It uses special functions to truncate an infinite sequence to a finite one. In this paper, we propose window techniques based on integer sequences. The striking feature of the proposed work is that it overcomes all the problems posed by floating point numbers and inaccuracy, as the sequences are made of only integers. Some of these integer window sequences, yield sharp transition, while some of them result in zero ripple in passband and stopband.

We present through the use of Petri Nets, modeling techniques for digital systems realizable using FPGAs. These Petri Net models are used for logic validation at the logic design phase. The technique is illustrated by modeling practical circuits. Further, the utility of the technique with respect to timing analysis of the modeled digital systems is considered. Low-power electronic devices used in digital telecom exchanges are vulnerable to surge voltages and currents primarily originating from natural lightning or due to the direct interactions between electric power and telecommunication lines, etc., causing the earth/ground potential rise, neutral potential rise, and faults in the system. The fault currents may flow directly to telecom lines or through the equipment to the customer's premises, causing adequate damage to the equipment and personnel safety. In wireline applications, analog or digital, central office, exchanges, and subscriber sides have to be protected. Decisive protection and protective methods have to be employed for proper functioning of the equipment under overvoltage/overcurrent conditions. Current investigation reports some interesting results obtained on the recently developed high-voltage high-current protection cards used in digital telecom exchanges. The performances of protection cards both for the ring wave and hybrid wave surges are evaluated and presented. The surge generators required for the investigation are developed and fabricated in house as per the relevant telecom standards.
