The system 3-methylpyridine(3MP)+water(H2O)+NaBr has been the subject of an intense scientific debate since the work of Jacob [Phys. Rev. E. 58, 2188 (1988)] and Anisimov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2336 (2000)]. The crossover critical behavior of this system seemed to show remarkable sensitivity to the weight fraction (X) of the ionic impurity NaBr. In the range X <= 0.10 the system displayed Ising behavior and a pronounced crossover to mean-field behavior in the range 0.10 <= X <= 0.16. A complete mean-field behavior was observed at X=0.17, a result that was later attributed to the existence of long-living nonequilibrium states in this system [Kostko , Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)]. In this paper, we report the near-critical behavior of osmotic susceptibility in the isotopically related ternary system, 3MP+heavy water(D2O)+NaBr. Detailed light-scattering experiments performed at exactly the same NaBr concentrations as investigated by Jacob reveal that the system 3MP+D2O+NaBr shows a simple Ising-type critical behavior with gamma similar or equal to 1.24 and nu similar or equal to 0.63 over the entire NaBr concentration range 0 <= X <= 0.1900. The crossover behavior is predominantly nonmonotonic and is completed well outside the critical domain. An analysis in terms of the effective susceptibility exponent (gamma(eff)) reveals that the crossover behavior is nonmonotonic for 0 <= X <= 0.1793 and tends to become monotonic for X > 0.1793. The correlation length amplitude xi(o), has a value of similar or equal to 2 A for 0.0250 <= X <= 0.1900, whereas for X=0, xi(o)similar or equal to 3.179 A. Since isotopic H -> D substitution is not expected to change the critical behavior of the system, our results support the recent results obtained by Kostko [Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)] that 3MP+H2O+NaBr exhibits universal Ising-type critical behavior typical for other aqueous solutions.

Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. The objective of the present work is to study the effect of electrical process Parameters (duty cycle and frequency) on morphological, structural, and in-vitro corrosion characteristics of oxide films formed on zirconium by plasma electrolytic oxidation in an electrolyte system consisting of 5 g/L of trisodium orthophosphate. The oxide films fabricated on zirconium by systematically varying the duty cycle and frequency are characterized for its phase composition, surface morphology, chemical composition, roughness, wettability, surface energy, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, apatite forming ability and osteoblast cell adhesion. X-ray diffraction pattern of all the oxide films showed the predominance of m-ZrO2 phase. Dense and uniform films with thickness varying from 9 to 15 mu m and roughness in the range of 0.62 to 1.03 mu m are formed. Porosity of oxide films is found to be increased with an increase infrequency. The water contact angle results demonstrated that the oxide films exhibited similar hydrophilicity to zirconium substrate. All oxide films showed improved corrosion resistance, as indicated by far lower corrosion current density and passive corrosion potential compared to the zirconium substrate in simulated body fluid environment, and among the four different combinations of duty cycle and frequency employed in the present study, the oxide film formed at 95% duty cycle and 50 Hz frequency (HDLF film) showed superior pitting corrosion resistance, which can be attributed to its pore free morpholOgy. Scratch test results showed that the HDLF oxide film adhered firmly to the substrate by developing a notable scratch resistance at 19.5 +/- 1.2.N. Besides the best corrosion resistance and scratch retistance, the HDLF film also showed good apatite forming ability and osteo sarcoma cell adhesion on its surface. The HDLF oxide film on zirconium with superior surface characteristics is believed to be useful for various types of implants in the dental and orthopedic fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Breast cancer is one of the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women and early detection is crucial for reducing mortality rates. In this paper, we present a novel and fully automated approach based on tissue transition analysis for lesion detection in breast ultrasound images. Every candidate pixel is classified as belonging to the lesion boundary, lesion interior or normal tissue based on its descriptor value. The tissue transitions are modeled using a Markov chain to estimate the likelihood of a candidate lesion region. Experimental evaluation on a clinical dataset of 135 images show that the proposed approach can achieve high sensitivity (95 %) with modest (3) false positives per image. The approach achieves very similar results (94 % for 3 false positives) on a completely different clinical dataset of 159 images without retraining, highlighting the robustness of the approach.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were produced on AM50 Mg alloy in alkaline phosphate based electrolyte with montmorillonite clay additives employing current densities of 30, 60, and 120 mA/cm(2). The effect of current density on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating was investigated. The clay additives got melted and reactively incorporated into the coating forming an amorphous phase, at all the current densities. However, the coating was predominantly amorphous only at 30 mA/cm(2) and with increasing current density, increasing fractions of crystalline phases were formed. Higher current densities resulted in increased thickness of the coating, but reduced the compactness of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 0.5 wt.% (0.08 M) and 3.5 wt.% (0.6 M) NaCl solution revealed that the coatings processed at 30 mA/cm(2) exhibited a relatively better initial corrosion resistance owing to its relatively defect-free barrier layer and compactness of the coating. However, the presence of amorphous phases in significant amounts and lack of MgO in the coating resulted in increased rate of dissolution of the coatings and degradation of corrosion resistance. Coatings produced at higher current densities exhibited initial inferior corrosion resistance due to a more defective barrier layer and increased porosity in pore band and outer porous layer. However, the increased amount of crystalline phases and an increased amount of MgO, which resisted dissolution, counterbalanced the negative effects of defective barrier and increased porosity resulting in a relatively lower rate of the degradation of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion resistance of all the coatings continuously decreased with time and became similar after prolonged immersion in NaCl solution. Increasing current density, therefore, did not prove to be beneficial for the improvement of the corrosion performance of the PEO coatings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The products of corrosion reaction of electrolytic iron in 45% ammonium nitrate solution formed under various conditions of time, temperature and pH have been analysed mainly by Mössbauer spectroscopy, in combination with X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption and electron microscopy techniques. γ-Fe00H is found to be the major product of hydrolytic precipitation at pH > 5.6 while only α-FeOOH is formed at pH < 3.0. In the pH range 3.0 < pH < 5.0, α-Fe00H and ferrihydrite are both formed. However, once the nuclei of α-Fe00H are formed under low pH conditions, their growth is favoured even in the otherwise unfavourable slightly acidic medium, resulting in a hydrous α-Fe00H which has two distinct hyperfine fields at the 57Fe nucleus. Magnetite is always formed in the vicinity of the metal and its rate of formation on the surface increases with temperature. α-Fe203 is the major product of hydrolytic precipitation at temperatures >80C. The possible mechanisms for the formation of each of the corrosion products are discussed.

A room-temperature cathodic electrolytic process was developed in the laboratory to recover zinc from industrial leach residues. The various parameters affecting the electroleaching process were studied using a statistically designed experiment. To understand the mechanisms behind the electrode processes, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic studies were carried out. The role of Einh measurements in monitoring such an electroleaching procedure is also shown. Since significant amounts of iron were also present in the leach liquor, attempts were made to purify it before zinc recovery by electrowinning. Reductive dissolution and creation of anion vacancies were found to be responsible for the dissolution of zinc ferrite present in the leach residue. A flow sheet of the process is given.

This paper describes the use of high-power thyristors in conjunction with a low-voltage supply for generating pulsed magnetic fields. A modular bank of electrolytic capacitors is charged through a programmable solid-state power supply and then rapidly discharged through a bank of thyristors into a magnetizing coil. The modular construction of capacitor banks enables the discrete control of pulse energy and time. Peak fields up to 15 telsa (150 KOe) and a half period of about 200 microseconds are generated through the discharges. Still higher fields are produced by discharging into a precooled coil ( 77°K). Measurement method for a pulsed field is described.

Preparation and structural characterization of palladium (II) complexes of ligands III-V and copper (II) complexes of III are reported. The elemental analyses of the complexes show that the metal: ligand ratio is 1 : 2. The electrical conductance in acetone shows the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. The diamagnetic character suggests a gross square-planar geometry for the palladium (II) complexes. Copper (II) complexes are paramagnetic with/~eff.~l'90 B.M. Spectral data suggest that in all the complexes the ligand coordinates to the metal (II) symmetrically through isonitroso-nitrogen and imine-nitrogen, forming a ¡ membered chelate ring. Amine-exchange reactions of the complexes are discussed and compared on the basis of their structures.

It is well known that the use of a series of resistors, connected between the equipotential rings of a Van de Graaff generator, improves the axial voltage grading of the generator. The work reported in this paper shows how the resistor chain also improves the radial voltage gradient. The electrolytic field mapping technique was adopted in the present work.

Adducts of lanthanide perchlorates with 4-nitro and 4-chloro pyridine-Noxides (4-NPNO and 4-CPNO respectively) have been synthesised for the first time and characterised by analysis, electrolytic conductance, infrared, proton-NMR and electronic spectral data. The complexes are of the compositions Ln2(NPNO)15 (ClO4)6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd and Gd), Tb(NPNO), (C1O4)6), Ln2(NPNO)13 (C1O4)6) (Ln = Dy, Ho, and Yb); Ln (CPNO)8 (C104)3) (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Yb) and Ln(CPNO), (C1O4)3) (Ln = Sm and Gd). Conductivity and IR data provide evidence for the non-coordinated nature of the perchlorate groups. IR and NMR spectra suggest coordinationvia the oxygen of the N-oxide group. Electronic spectral shapes of the Nd+3 and Ho+3 complexes are interpreted in terms of eight-and seven-coordinate environments in the case of 4-NPNO complexes and eight-coordination in the case of 4-CPNO complexes. IR data indicate bridged structure in NPNO complexes of lanthanides other than Tb.

A survey of the literature on lanthanide coordination compounds reveals that ligands involving ether oxygens as donor atoms have received very little attention [ 11. Only recently have the complexes of lanthanides with cyclic polyethers been characterized [l-3]. We report in this communication that interaction of rareearth perchlorates with two new ligands namely N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-u-carboxamido-Oanisamide (TMCA) and N,N’-di-t-butyl-crcarboxamido- 0-anisamide (DTBCA). The two ligands are potentially tridentate possessing two amide moieties and an ether linkage in between. The isolated complexes have been characterized by analysis, electrolytic conductance, infrared and electronic spectra. The ‘H and “C NMR spectra for the diamagnetic La3+ and Y3+ complexes are also discussed.

Soft matter provides diverse opportunities for the development of electrolytes for all solid state lithium batteries. Here we review soft matter solid electrolytes for lithium batteriesthat are primarily obtained starting from liquid electrolytic systems. This concept of solid electrolyte synthesis from liquid is significantly different from prevalent approaches. The novelty of our approach is discussed in the light of various fundamental issues and in relation to its application to rechargeable lithium batteries.

The crucial role of oxide surface chemical composition on ion transport in "soggy sand" electrolytes is discussed in a systematic manner. A prototype soggy sand electrolytic system comprising aerosil silica functionalized with various hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties dispersed in lithium perchlorate-ethylene glycol solution was used for the study. Detailed rheology studies show that the attractive particle network in the case of the composite with unmodified aerosil silica (with surface silanol groups) is most favorable for percolation in ionic conductivity, as well as rendering the composite with beneficial elastic mechanical properties: Though weaker in strength compared to the composite with unmodified aerosil particles, attractive particle networks are also observed in composites of aerosil particles with surfaces partially substituted with hydrophobic groups. The percolation in ionic conductivity is, however, dependent on the size of the hydrophobic moiety. No spanning attractive particle network was formed for aerosil particles with surfaces modified with stronger hydrophilic groups (than silanol), and as a result, no percolation in ionic conductivity was observed. The composite with hydrophilic particles was a sol, contrary to gels obtained in the case of unmodified aerosil, and partially substituted with hydrophobic groups.

Lanthanide complexes of formulation [La(B)(2)(NO3)(3)] (1-3) and [Gd(B)(2)(NO3)(3)] (4-6), where B is a N,N-donor phenanthroline base, namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1, 4),dipyrido[3,2-d2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2,5) and dipyrido[3,2-a2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3, 6), have been prepared, characterized from physicochemical data, and their photoinduced DNA and protein cleavage activity studied The photocytotoxicity of the dppz complexes 3 and 6 has been studied using HeLa cancer cells. The complexes exhibitligand centered bands in the UV region The dppz complexes show thelowest energy band at 380 nm in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) The La(III)complexes are diamagnetic. The Gd(III) complexes (4-6) have magneticmoments that correspond to seven unpaired electrons The complexes are1(.)1 electrolytic in aqueous DMF The dpq and dppz complexes in DMFshow ligand-based reductions. The complexes display moderate binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values in the range of 5.7 x 10(4)-5.8 x 10(5) M-1 with a relative order. 3, 6 (dppz)> 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen) The binding data suggest DNA surface and/or groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes do not show any hydrolytic cleavage of plasmid supercoiled pUC19 DNA. The dpq and dppz complexes efficiently cleave SC DNA to its nicked circular form onexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm at nanomolar complex concentration. Mechanistic studies reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) as the cleavage active species. The complexes show binding propensity to bovine serum albumin (BSA)protein giving K-BSA values of similar to 10(5) M-1. The dppz complexes 3 and 6 show BSA protein cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm The dppz complexes 3 and 6 exhibit significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells giving respective IC50 values of 341 nM and 573 nM in UV-A light of 365 nm for an exposure time of 15 min (IC50 > 100 mu M in dark for both the complexes) Control experiments show significant dark and phototoxicity of the dppz base alone (IC50 = 413 nM in light with 4 h incubation in dark and 116 mu M in dark with 24 h incubation). A significant decrease in the dark toxicity of the dppz base is observedon binding to the lanthanide ions while retaining similar phototoxicity.
