This paper highlights the microstructural features of commercially available interstitial free (IF) steel specimens deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to four passes following the route A. The microstructure of the samples was studied by different techniques of X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis as a function of strain (epsilon). It was found that the crystallite size is reduced substantially already at epsilon=2.3 and it does not change significantly during further deformation. At the same time, the dislocation density increases gradually up to epsilon=4.6. The dislocation densities estimated from X-ray diffraction study are found to correlate very well with the experimentally obtained yield strength of the samples.

The Fraunhoffer diffraction analysis of cloud-covered satellite imagery has shown that the diffraction pattern follows approximately cosine squared distribution. The overshooting tops of clouds and the shadows cast by them contribute much to the diffraction of light, particularly in the high-frequency range. Indeed, cloud-covered imagery can be distinguished from cloud-free imagery on the basis of rate of decay of the diffracted light power in the high-frequency band.

Nanocrystalline Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) of 8-10 nm sizes have been synthesized by hydrothermal method using melamine as complexing agent. Compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and their structures have been refined by the Rietveld method. The compounds crystallize in fluorite structure and the composition is Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 where Ru is in +4 state and Ce is in mixed-valence (+3, +4) state. Substitution of Ru4+ ion in CeO2 activated the lattice oxygen. Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 reversibly releases 0.22[O] and 0.42[O] for x = 0.05 and 0.10, respectively, which is higher than the maximumpossible OSC of 0.22 [O] observed for Ce0.50Zr0.50O2. Utilization of Higher OSC of Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) is also reflected in terms of low-temperature CO oxidation with these catalysts, both in the presence and absence of feed oxygen. The Ru4+ ion acts as an active center for reducing molecules (CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'') and oxide ion vacancy acts as an active center for O-2 and NO, leading to low-temperature NO conversion to N-2. Thus due to Ru4+ ion, Ce1-xRuxO2-delta is not just a high oxygen storage material but also shows high activity toward CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'' oxidation, and NO reduction by CO at low temperature with high N-2 selectivity for three-way catalysis.

A modified form of Green's integral theorem is employed to derive the energy identity in any water wave diffraction problem in a single-layer fluid for free-surface boundary condition with higher-order derivatives. For a two-layer fluid with free-surface boundary condition involving higher-order derivatives, two forms of energy identities involving transmission and reflection coefficients for any wave diffraction problem are also derived here by the same method. Based on this modified Green's theorem, hydrodynamic relations such as the energy-conservation principle and modified Haskind–Hanaoka relation are derived for radiation and diffraction problems in a single as well as two-layer fluid.

A novel optical method is proposed and demonstrated, for real-time dimension estimation of thin opaque cylindrical objects. The methodology relies on free-space Fraunhofer diffraction principle. The central region, of such tailored diffraction pattern obtained under suitable choice of illumination conditions, comprises of a pair of `equal intensity maxima', whose separation remains constant and independent of the diameter of the diffracting object. An analysis of `the intensity distribution in this region' reveals the following. At a point symmetrically located between the said maxima, the light intensity varies characteristically with diameter of the diffracting object, exhibiting a relatively stronger intensity modulation under spherical wave illumination than under a plane wave illumination. The analysis reveals further, that the said intensity variation with diameter is controllable by the illumination conditions. Exploiting these `hitherto unexplored' features, the present communication reports for the first time, a reliable method of estimating diameter of thin opaque cylindrical objects in real-time, with nanometer resolution from single point intensity measurement. Based on the proposed methodology, results of few simulation and experimental investigations carried-out on metallic wires with diameters spanning the range of 5 to 50 mu m, are presented. The results show that proposed method is well-suited for high resolution on-line monitoring of ultrathin wire diameters, extensively used in micro-mechanics and semiconductor industries, where the conventional diffraction-based methods fail to produce accurate results.

Emf measurements on the galvanic cell Pt, Ta, In + In,O, / Tho,-Y,03 / Cu + C+O, Pt were used to obtain the standard free energy of formation of 1%03fr om 600 to 900°C. Differential thermal analysis was used to detect the decomposition of In2(S0,), under controlled SO2 + O2 + Ar mixtures in thqtemperature range 640-8wC. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the decomposition product was 1%03 without an oxywlphate intermediate. The following equations were obtained for the variation of the standard free-energy change(Jlmole) with temperature:
Crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction studies of sortase A from Streptococcus pneumoniae
Resumo:
Sortases are cell-membrane-anchored cysteine transpeptidases that are essential for the assembly and anchoring of cell-surface adhesins in Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, they play critical roles in virulence, infection and colonization by pathogens. Sortases have been classified into four types based on their primary sequence and the target-protein motifs that they recognize. All Gram-positive bacteria express a class A housekeeping sortase (SrtA). Sortase A from Streptococcus pneumoniae (NP_358691) has been crystallized in two crystal forms. Diamond-shaped crystals of Delta N(59)SrtA diffracted to 4.0 angstrom resolution and belonged to a tetragonal system with unit-cell parameters a = b = 122.8, c = 86.5 angstrom, alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees, while rod-shaped crystals of Delta N(81)SrtA diffracted to 2.91 angstrom resolution and belonged to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with unit-cell parameters a = 66.8, b = 103.47, c = 74.79 angstrom, alpha = gamma = 90, beta = 115.65 degrees. The Matthews coefficient (V(M) = 2.77 angstrom(3) Da(-1)) with similar to 56% solvent content suggested the presence of four molecules in the asymmetric unit for Delta N(81)SrtA. Also, a multi-copy search using a monomer as a probe in the molecular-replacement method resulted in the successful location of four sortase molecules in the asymmetric unit, with statistics R = 41.61, R(free) = 46.44, correlation coefficient (CC) = 64.31, CC(free) = 57.67.

We report the design and development of a self-contained multi-band receiver (MBR) system, intended for use with a single large aperture to facilitate sensitive and high time-resolution observations simultaneously in 10 discrete frequency bands sampling a wide spectral span (100-1500 MHz) in a nearly log-periodic fashion. The development of this system was primarily motivated by need for tomographic studies of pulsar polar emission regions. Although the system design is optimized for the primary goal, it is also suited for several other interesting astronomical investigations. The system consists of a dual-polarization multi-band feed (with discrete responses corresponding to the 10 bands pre-selected as relatively radio frequency interference free), a common wide-band radio frequency front-end, and independent back-end receiver chains for the 10 individual sub-bands. The raw voltage time sequences corresponding to 16 MHz bandwidth each for the two linear polarization channels and the 10 bands are recorded at the Nyquist rate simultaneously. We present the preliminary results from the tests and pulsar observations carried out with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope using this receiver. The system performance implied by these results and possible improvements are also briefly discussed.

Bulk texture measurement of multi-axial forged body center cubic interstitial free steel performed in this study using x-ray and neutron diffraction indicated the presence of a strong {101}aOE (c) 111 > single texture component. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations could successfully predict the formation of this texture component by incorporating the complicated strain path followed during this process and assuming the activity of {101}aOE (c) 111 > slip system. In addition, a first-order estimate of mechanical properties in terms of highly anisotropic yield locus and Lankford parameter was also obtained from the simulations.

The structure-property correlation in the lead-free piezoelectric (1 - x)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-(x)BaTiO3 has been systematically investigated in detail as a function of composition (0 < x <= 0.11), temperature, electric field, and mechanical impact by Raman scattering, ferroelectric, piezoelectric measurement, x-ray, and neutron powder diffraction methods. Although x-ray diffraction study revealed three distinct composition ranges characterizing different structural features in the equilibrium state at room temperature: (i) monoclinic (Cc) + rhombohedral (R3c) for the precritical compositions, 0 <= x <= 0.05, (ii) cubiclike for 0.06 <= x <= 0.0675, and (iii) morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) like for 0.07 <= x < 0.10, Raman and neutron powder diffraction studies revealed identical symmetry for the cubiclike and the MPB compositions. The cubiclike structure undergoes irreversible phase separation by electric poling as well as by pure mechanical impact. This cubiclike phase exhibits relaxor ferroelectricity in its equilibrium state. The short coherence length (similar to 50A degrees) of the out-of-phase octahedral tilts does not allow the normal ferroelectric state to develop below the dipolar freezing temperature, forcing the system to remain in a dipolar glass state at room temperature. Electric poling helps the dipolar glass state to transform to a normal ferroelectric state with a concomitant enhancement in the correlation length of the out-of-phase octahedral tilt.

Neutron powder diffraction study of Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O-3 at close composition intervals has revealed coexistence of ferroelectric phases: orthorhombic (Amm2) + tetragonal (P4mm) for 0.02 <= x <= 0.05 and rhombohedral (R3m) + orthorhombic (Amm2) for 0.07 <= x < 0.09. These compositions exhibit relatively enhanced piezoelectric properties as compared to their single phase counterparts outside this composition region, confirming the polymorphic phase boundary nature of the phase coexistence regions. The nature of the pre-morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) cubic-like state in the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (1-x)Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-(x)BaTiO3 at x similar to 0.06 has been examined in detail by electric field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, dielectric and ferroelectric characterization. The superlattice reflections in the neutron diffraction patterns cannot be explained with the tetragonal P4bm and the rhombohedral (R3c) phase coexistence model. The cubic like state is rather a result of long ranged modulated complex octahedral tilt. This modulated structure exhibits anomalously large dielectric dispersion. The modulated structure transforms to a MPB state on poling. The field-stabilized MPB state is destroyed and the modulated structure is restored on heating the poled specimen above the Vogel-Fulcher freezing temperature. The results show the predominant role of competing octahedral tilts in determining the nature of structural and polar states in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-based ferroelectrics. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

We develop iterative diffraction tomography algorithms, which are similar to the distorted Born algorithms, for inverting scattered intensity data. Within the Born approximation, the unknown scattered field is expressed as a multiplicative perturbation to the incident field. With this, the forward equation becomes stable, which helps us compute nearly oscillation-free solutions that have immediate bearing on the accuracy of the Jacobian computed for use in a deterministic Gauss-Newton (GN) reconstruction. However, since the data are inherently noisy and the sensitivity of measurement to refractive index away from the detectors is poor, we report a derivative-free evolutionary stochastic scheme, providing strictly additive updates in order to bridge the measurement-prediction misfit, to arrive at the refractive index distribution from intensity transport data. The superiority of the stochastic algorithm over the GN scheme for similar settings is demonstrated by the reconstruction of the refractive index profile from simulated and experimentally acquired intensity data. Free-standing Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coat, when subjected to tensile testing at high temperatures (T >= 900 degrees C), exhibits significant decrease in strength and increase in ductility during deformation at strains exceeding that corresponding to the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), i.e., in the post-UTS regime. The stress-strain curve is also marked by serrations in this regime. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies suggest dynamic recovery and recrystallization (DRR) as the mechanisms for the observed tensile behavior in the coating. Activation energy values suggest vacancy diffusion assists DRR. The fine recrystallized grains formed after deformation had a strong < 110 > texture. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Towards fundamental studies and potential applications, achieving precise control over the generation of defects in pure ZnO nanocrystals has been always intriguing. Herein, we explored the rote of spectator ions (Co2+ and Ni2+) in influencing the functional properties of ZnO nanocrystals. The crystalline quality, phase purity, and composition of as-prepared samples were thoroughly established by powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (TEM and STEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Despite the presence of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in the reaction mixture, STEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XPS analysis, and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that the ZnO nanocrystals formed are dopant-free. Even so, their luminescence and magnetic properties were substantially different from those of pure ZnO nanocrystals synthesized using a similar methodology. We attribute the origin of these properties to the defects associated with ZnO nanocrystals generated under different but optimized conditions.
