Tuberculosis (TB) is a life threatening disease caused due to infection from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). That most of the TB strains have become resistant to various existing drugs, development of effective novel drug candidates to combat this disease is a need of the day. In spite of intensive research world-wide, the success rate of discovering a new anti-TB drug is very poor. Therefore, novel drug discovery methods have to be tried. We have used a rule based computational method that utilizes a vertex index, named `distance exponent index (D-x)' (taken x = -4 here) for predicting anti-TB activity of a series of acid alkyl ester derivatives. The method is meant to identify activity related substructures from a series a compounds and predict activity of a compound on that basis. The high degree of successful prediction in the present study suggests that the said method may be useful in discovering effective anti-TB compound. It is also apparent that substructural approaches may be leveraged for wide purposes in computer-aided drug design.

The present study is to investigate the interaction of strong shock heated oxygen on the surface of SiO2 thin film. The thermally excited oxygen undergoes a three-body recombination reaction on the surface of silicon dioxide film. The different oxidation states of silicon species on the surface of the shock-exposed SiO2 film are discussed based on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results. The surface morphology of the shock wave induced damage at the cross section of SiO2 film and structure modification of these materials are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and ion microscopy. Whether the surface reaction of oxygen on SiO2 film is catalytic or non-catalytic is discussed in this paper.

The effect of the addition of glassy phases on the microstructure and dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics was investigated. Both single-component (B2O3) and multi-cornponent (30wt% BaO-60wt% B2O3-10wt% SiO2 (BBS)) glass systems were chosen to study their effect on the density, microstructure and dielectric properties of CCTO. Addition of an optimum amount of B2O3 glass facilitated grain growth and an increase in dielectric constant. However, further increase in the B2O3 content resulted in its segregation at the grain boundaries associated with a reduction in the grain size. In contrast, BBS glass addition resulted in well-faceted grains and increase in the dielectric constant and decrease in the dielectric loss. An internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) model was invoked to correlate the dielectric constant with the grain size in these samples. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) continues to be a proven testing ground for the study of integral membrane proteins (IMPs). It is important to study the stability of the individual helices of bR, as they are postulated to exist as independently stable transmembmne helices (TMHs) and also for their utility as templates for modeling other IMPs with the postulated seven-helix bundle topology. Toward this purpose, the seven helices of bR have been studied by molecular dynamics simulation in this study. The suitability of using the backbone-dependent rotamer library of side-chain conformations arrived at from the data base of globular protein structures in the case TMHs has been tested by another set of ? helix simulations with the side-chain orientations taken from this library. The influence of the residue's net charge oil the helix stability was examined by simulating the helices III, IV, and VI (from both of the above sets of helices) with zero net charge on the side chains. The results of these 20 simulations demonstrate in general the stability of the isolated helices of bR in conformity with the two-stage hypothesis of IMP folding. However, the helices I, II, V, and VII are more stable than the other three helices. The helical nature of certain regions of III, IV, and VI are influenced by factors such as the net charge and orientation of several residues. It is seen that the residues Arg, Lys, Asp, and Glu (charged residues), and Ser, Thr, Gly, and Pro, play a crucial role in the stability of the helices of bR. The backbone-dependent rotamer library for the side chains is found to be suitable for the study of TMHs in IMP. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is emerging as one of the most competent severe plastic deformation (SPD) method for producing bulk ultra-fine grained materials with improved properties. Optimizing the process parameters for a defect free process is one of the challenging aspects of FSP to mark its commercial use. For the commercial aluminium alloy 2024-T3 plate of 6 mm thickness, a bottom-up approach has been attempted to optimize major independent parameters of the process such as plunge depth, tool rotation speed and traverse speed. Tensile properties of the optimum friction stir processed sample were correlated with the microstructural characterization done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Optimum parameters from the bottom-up approach have led to a defect free FSP having a maximum strength of 93% the base material strength. Micro tensile testing of the samples taken from the center of processed zone has shown an increased strength of 1.3 times the base material. Measured maximum longitudinal residual stress on the processed surface was only 30 MPa which was attributed to the solid state nature of FSP. Microstructural observation reveals significant grain refinement with less variation in the grain size across the thickness and a large amount of grain boundary precipitation compared to the base metal. The proposed experimental bottom-up approach can be applied as an effective method for optimizing parameters during FSP of aluminium alloys, which is otherwise difficult through analytical methods due to the complex interactions between work-piece, tool and process parameters. Precipitation mechanisms during FSP were responsible for the fine grained microstructure in the nugget zone that provided better mechanical properties than the base metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are being used to solve a variety of problems in pattern recognition, robotic control, VLSI CAD and other areas. In most of these applications, a speedy response from the ANNs is imperative. However, ANNs comprise a large number of artificial neurons, and a massive interconnection network among them. Hence, implementation of these ANNs involves execution of computer-intensive operations. The usage of multiprocessor systems therefore becomes necessary. In this article, we have presented the implementation of ART1 and ART2 ANNs on ring and mesh architectures. The overall system design and implementation aspects are presented. The performance of the algorithm on ring, 2-dimensional mesh and n-dimensional mesh topologies is presented. The parallel algorithm presented for implementation of ART1 is not specific to any particular architecture. The parallel algorithm for ARTE is more suitable for a ring architecture.

A mathematical model for glucose and oxygen consumption, and cell growth during fungal growth on a single solid particle is developed. A moving biofilm is assumed to be present on the surface of the solid particle. Initially only glucose is assumed to be growth limiting and later oxygen transferred from the gas phase on to the biofilm is also assumed to be growth limiting. Glucose is found to be severely growth limiting when assumed to be the only growth limiting factor and its limiting levels far less severe when oxygen limitation is also included. The objective of the model is to gain a better understanding of the mass transfer and relative growth limiting characteristics of glucose and oxygen in fungal growth systems. The results obtained from the model proposed here will be the subject of future work.

C-70 films deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), Ag(110), Ag(111) and Pt(110) substrates have been investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy. Interesting observations on novel molecular arrangements, as well as orientational disorder, are presented. Solid solutions of C-60 and C-70 show interesting packing of these molecules when deposited on HOPG.

Earlier desinent cavitation studies on a 1/8 caliber ogive by one of the authors (J. W. H.) showed a sudden change in the magnitude of the desinent cavitation number at a critical velocity. In the present work it is shown by means of oil-film flow visualization that below the critical velocity a long laminar separation bubble exists whereas above the critical velocity the laminar separation bubble is short. Thus the desinent cavitation characteristics of a 1/8 caliber ogive are governed by the nature of the viscous flow around the body.

We report on spectroscopic studies of the chiral structure in phospholipid tubules formed in mixtures of alcohol and water. Synthetic phospholipids containing diacetylenic moieties in the acyl chains self-assemble into hollow, cylindrical tubules in appropriate conditions. Circular dichroism provides a direct measure of chirality of the molecular structure. We find that the CD spectra of tubules formed in mixtures of alcohol and water depends strongly on the alcohol used and the lipid concentration. The relative spectral intensity of different circular dichroism bands correlates with the number of bilayers observed using microscopy. The results provide experimental evidence that tubule formation is based on chiral packing of the lipid molecules and that interbilayer interactions are important to the tubule structure

The relative rôles of FSH and LH in ovulation induction in immature and adult cycling rats and hamsters have been evaluated. Both heterologous purified pituitary hormones and homologous crude pituitary extracts have been used as ovulatory stimuli in immature animals primed with PMSG. Well-characterized FSH and LH antisera have been used in the above model systems to achieve specific neutralization of FSH and LH. The present study revealed that LH is the physiological trigger needed for induction of ovulation in both rats and hamsters and FSH cannot, by itself, induce ovulation in the total absence of LH.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were discovered by Iijima in 1991 as the fourth form of carbon. Carbon nanotubes are the ultimate form of the carbon fibre because of its high Young's modulus in the order of 1 TPa, which is very useful for load transfer in nanocomposites. In the present work, CNT/Cu nanocomposites were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique, and after extrusion of the nanocomposites, bright field transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out. From the transmission electron microscopic images obtained, a novel method of ascertaining the Young's modulus of multiwalled CNTs is worked out in the present paper, which turns out to be 0.94 TPa, which is consistent with experimental results. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the microhardness of copper by reinforcing it with multiwalled CNTs. There is an increase in hardness by twofold in CNT/Cu nanocomposites as compared to pure Cu matrix. This is due to high relative density, even distribution of CNTs and proper bonding at CNT/Cu interfaces.

Efavirenz, (S)-6-chloro-4-(cyclopropylethynyl)-1,4-dihydro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-3 ,1-benzoxazin-2-one, is an anti HIV agent belonging to the class of the non-nucleoside inhibitors of the HIV-1 virus reverse transcriptase. A systematic quantum chemical study of the possible conformations, their relative stabilities and vibrational spectra of efavirenz has been reported. Structural and spectral characteristics of efavirenz have been studied by vibrational spectroscopy and quantum chemical methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for potential energy curve, optimized geometries and vibrational spectra have been carried out using 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets and B3LYP functionals. Based on these results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the crystalline structure of the most stable form of efavirenz. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The infrared and the Raman spectra of the molecule based on OFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dead-time is provided in between the gating signals of the top and bottom semiconductor switches in an inverter leg to prevent the shorting of DC bus. Due to this dead time, there is a significant unwanted change in the output voltage of the inverter. The effect is different for different pulse width modulation (PWM) methodologies. The effect of dead-time on the output fundamental voltage is studied theoretically as well as experimentally for bus-clamping PWM methodologies. Further, experimental observations on the effectiveness of dead-time compensation are presented.
