1. The concentrations of ubiquinone and ubichromenol increased in the livers, but not in the intestines and kidneys, of rats maintained on a diet deficient in vitamin 2. After short time intervals (e.g. 2 h) following administration of the tracer, incorporation of [2-14C]mevalonate into ubiquinone and ubichromenol in livers of vitamin A-deficient rats was lower than for normal animals; this was in contrast to later times (e.g. 72 h) when it was higher. 3. The “newly synthesized” ubiquinone in livers of vitamin A-deficient rats was distributed in all the cell fractions without specific localization. 4. Absorbed exogenous [14C]ubiquinone and [14C]ubichromenol were retained in the livers of vitamin A-deficient rats to a larger extent and for a longer time than in the normal animals. 5. The results suggest that the accumulation of ubiquinone and ubichromenol in the livers of vitamin A-deficient rats is due to lowered catabolism and not to increased rate of synthesis.

IT was initially suggested that vitamin A-deficiency leads to an interference in the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid, because depletion of vitamin A was found to cause a fall in the tissue-levels of ascorbate and diminished urinary ascorbic acid excretion in animals1-3. Mapson4, however, concluded that lowered ascorbic acid-levels in vitamin A-deficient rats is due to inanition only, because he was able to show that following chloretone treatment vitamin A-deficient and pair-fed vitamin A normal rats excrete comparable amounts of ascorbic acid in their urine and that restriction of food intake reduces the urinary ascorbate even in the chloretone-treated normal rats. Results of our preliminary experiments reported here clearly indicate that the synthesis of ascorbic acid in rats is markedly reduced during vitamin A-deficiency.

Electron-deficient olefins add to thioenone 1 upon m* excitation. Cycloaddition occurs to the thiocarbonyl chromophore preferentially from the less-hindered side to yield thietanes. Thietane formation is stereospecific and regioselective. This addition has been inferred to originate from the second excited singlet, S2(?rx*), state. The exciplex intermediacy has been inferred from the dependence of the fluorescence quenching rate constant on the electron-acceptor properties of the olefin. The observed site specificity and regioselectivity are rationalized on the basis of PMO theory. The observed photochemical behavior of thioenone is different from that of enones.

K(2,2,2-crypt)](2)As-7]center dot THF, 1 (2,2,2-crypt = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo8.8.8]hexacosane) is the first well characterized seven-atom radical anion of group 15. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirms the presence and electronic structure of As-7](2-). Cyclic voltammetry in DMF solution shows the As-7(3) /As-7(2) redox couple as a one-electron reversible process. Theoretical investigations explore the bonding and properties of compound 1.

Anion-deficient layered perovskite oxides of the formula, ACa2Nb3-xMxO10-x (A = Rb, Cs; M = Al, Fe) for 0 < x less-than-or-equal-to 1.0, possessing tetragonal structures similar to the parent ACa2Nb3O10, have been synthesized. The interlayer A cations in these materials are readily exchanged with protons in aqueous HNO3 to give the protonated derivatives, HCa2Nb3-xMxO10-x; the latter are solid Bronsted acids intercalating a number of organic amines including aniline (pK(a) = 4.63). The distribution of acid sites in the interlayer region of HCa2Nb2MO9 inferred from n-alkylamine intercalation suggests that oxygen vacancies and Nb/M atoms are disordered in the ACa2Nb2MO9 samples prepared at 1100-1200-degrees-C. Annealing a disordered sample of CsCa2Nb2AlO9 for a long time at lower temperatures tends to order the Nb/Al atoms and oxygen vacancies to produce octahedral (NbO6/2)-tetrahedral (AlO4/2)-octahedral (NbO6/2) layer sequence reminiscent of the brownmillerite structure.

Anion-deficient perovskite oxides of the formula AM(1-x)Al(x)O(3-x) (A = Na or K; M = Nb or Ta) have been prepared for 0 < x less than or equal to 0.5. Diffraction experiments reveal that while the potassium compounds adopt orthorhombic/cubic perovskite structures similar to the parent KNbO3/KTaO3, the sodium compound, NaNb0.5Al0.5O2.5, possesses a brownmillerite/LaSr-CuAlO5-like superstructure. Al-27 NMR spectra show an exclusive tetrahedral oxygen coordination for AI(III) in Na-Nb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (I) and both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination for Al(III) in KNb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (II). The results suggest a long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in I and II respectively. Electrical conductivity measurements show a significant oxide ion conduction for KNb1-xAlxO3-x, with the conductivity increasing with x up to x = 0.5. The differences in the Arrhenius plots of the ionic conductivity of I and II have been rationalized in terms of the long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in the anion-deficient perovskite oxides.

The La0.6Pb0.4MnO3(LPMO) thin films were in situ deposited at different oxygen partial pressure and at a substrate temperature of 630 degrees C by pulsed laser deposition. The films grown at lower oxygen partial pressures showed an increase in lattice parameter and resistivity and a decrease in the insulator-metal transition temperature as compared to the stoichiometric LPMO thin film grown at 400 mTorr. Further, these oxygen-deficient thin films showed over 70% giant magnetoresistance (GMR) near the insulator-metal transition temperature against the 40% GMR in the case of stoichiometric thin films. The La2NiCoO5 and LaSrCo2O5 phases have been synthesized by the temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) of the parent mixed perovskites LaNi0.5Co0.5O3 and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3, respectively, under an ammonia atmosphere. While La2NiCoO5 adopts a structure similar to the vacancy-ordered La2Ni2O5, LaSrCo2O5 crystallized in a brownmillerite-like structure. The reactivity of the perovskite oxides towards reduction by ammonia and the structure of the product oxides are found to be guided by factors such as the coordination and oxidation state of the transition-metal cations.

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. We have identified a methanol- and biotin-starvation-inducible zinc finger protein named ROP [repressor of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK)] in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. When P. pastoris strain GS115 (wild-type, WT) is cultured in biotin-deficient, glucose-ammonium (Bio(-)) medium, growth is suppressed due to the inhibition of anaplerotic synthesis of oxaloacetate, catalysed by the biotin-dependent enzyme pyruvate carboxylase (PC). Deletion of ROP results in a strain (Delta ROP) that can grow under biotin-deficient conditions due to derepression of a biotin- and PC-independent pathway of anaplerotic synthesis of oxaloacetate. Northern analysis as well as microarray expression profiling of RNA isolated from WT and Delta ROP strains cultured in Bio(-) medium indicate that expression of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase gene (PEPCK) is induced in Delta ROP during biotin- or PC-deficiency even under glucose-abundant conditions. There is an excellent correlation between PEPCK expression and growth of Delta ROP in Bio(-) medium, suggesting that ROP-mediated regulation of PEPCK may have a crucial role in the biotin- and PC-independent growth of the Delta ROP strain. To our knowledge, ROP is the first example of a zinc finger transcription factor involved in the catabolite repression of PEPCK in yeast cells cultured under biotin- or PC-deficient and glucose-abundant conditions.

SrRuO3 is a well-known itinerant ferromagnet with many intriguing characteristics. The Ru deficiency in this system is believed to play a pivotal role in influencing many of its magnetic and transport properties. The present study involves the magnetic and transport properties of the Ru-deficient SrRu0.93O3 sample to gain more insight into the unusual low-temperature behavior. The ac susceptibility study reveals a sharp ferromagnetic transition at 150 K followed by a hump at T-h similar to 50 K, which has anomalous frequency dependence. Besides, the T-h shifts to lower temperatures with an increase in the superposed dc-biasing field and adheres to H-2 dependence, in accordance with the Gabay and Toulouse line for the Heisenberg spin glass systems. We also observe a pronounced memory effect toward the low-temperature side, signifying the characteristic of glassy behavior. The temperature-dependent magnetoresistance indicates the signature of an additional ordering toward the low-temperature side. All of the interesting findings combined unveil the existence of low-temperature cryptic magnetic phase in SrRu0.93O3. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3673427]

The titled approaches were effected with various 2-substituted benzoylacetic acid oximes 3 (Beckmann) and 2-substituted malonamic acids 9 (Hofmann), their carboxyl groups being masked as a 2,4,10-trioxaadamantane unit (an orthoacetate). The oxime mesylates have been rearranged with basic Al2O3 in refluxing CHCl3, and the malonamic acids with phenyliodoso acetate and KOH/MeOH. Both routes are characterized by excellent overall yields. Structure confirmation of final products was conducted with X-ray diffraction in selected cases. The final N-benzoyl and N-(methoxycarbonyl) products are alpha-amino acids with both carboxyl and amino protection; hence, they are of great interest in peptide synthesis.

Oxygen-deficient defect perovskite La4BaCu5O13+d phase has been synthesized by the nitrate-citrate gel combustion method at 950 C for 2 h. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement method using room-temperature powder XRD data. The La4BaCu5O13+d crystallizes in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/m (no. 83) and having the lattice parameters a=8.6508 c=3.8606 (1) Å and (2) Å, respectively. Oxygen content was determined by the iodometric titration. Low-temperature resistivity result reveals that La4BaCu5O13+d compound exhibit metallic behavior up to 15 K.
