Reaction between PdCl2 and 1-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazole (RaaiR') or 1-alkyl-2-(naphthyl-alpha/beta-azo)imidazole (alpha/beta-NaiR') under reflux in ethanol has isolated complexes of compositions Pd(RaaiR')(2)Cl-2 (5, 6) and Pd(alpha/beta-NaiR')(2)Cl-2 (7, 8). The X-ray structure determination of one of the molecules, Pd(alpha-NaiBz)(2)Cl-2 (7c), has reported a trans-PdCl2 configuration, and alpha-NaiBz acts as monodentate N(imidazole) donor ligand. The spectral (IR, UV-vis, H-1 NMR) data support the structure. UV light irradiation (light source: Perkin-Elmer LS 55 spectrofluorimeter, Xenon discharge lamp, lambda = 360-396 nm) in a MeCN solution of the complexes shows E-to-Z isomerization of the coordinated azoimidazole unit. The reverse transformation, Z-to-E, is very slow with visible light irradiation. Quantum yields (phi(E-Z)) of E-to-Z isomerization are calculated, and phi is lower than that of the free ligand but comparable with those of Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of the same ligand. The Z-to-E isomerization is a thermally induced process. The activation energy (E-a) of Z-to-E isomerization is calculated by controlled-temperature experimentation. cis-Pd(azoimidazole)Cl-2 complexes (azomidazole acts as N(imidazole) and N(azo) Chelating ligand) do not respond upon light irradiation, which supports the idea that the presence of noncoordinated azo-N to make free azo (-N=N-) function is important to reveal photochromic activity. DFT calculation of Pd(alpha-NaiBz)(2)Cl-2 (7c) has suggested that the HOMO of the molecule is constituted of Pd (32%) and Cl (66%), and hence photo excitation may use the energy of Pd and Cl instead of that of the photofunctional -N=N-Ar motif; thus, the rate of photoisomerization and quantum yield decrease versus the free ligand values.

The characterization and properties of trans-(X)-[RuX2(CO)(2)(alpha/beta-NaiPy)] (1, 2) (alpha-NaiPy (a), beta-NaiPy (b); X = Cl (1), I (2)) are described in this work. The structures are confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Reaction of these compounds with Me3NO in MeCN has isolated monocarbonyl trans-(X)-RuX2(CO)(MeCN)(alpha/beta-NaiPy)] (3, 4). The complexes show intense emission properties. Quantum yields of 1 and 2 (phi= 0.02-0.08) are higher than 3 and 4 (phi = 0.006-0.015). Voltammogram shows higher Ru(III)/Ru(II) (1.3-1.5 V) potential of 1 and 2 than that of 3 and 4 (0.8-0.9 V) that may be due to coordination of two pi-acidic CO groups in former. The electronic spectra and redox properties of the complexes are compared with the results obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) using polarizable continuum model (CPCM).

Substitution of Sn4+ ion in CeO2 creates activated oxygen in Ce0.8Sn0.2O2 leading to higher oxygen storage capacity compared to Ce0.8Zr0.2O2. With Pd ion substitution in Ce0.8Sn0.2O2,activation of oxygen is further enhanced as observed from the H-2/TPR study. Both EXAFS analysis and DFT calculation reveal that in the solid solution Ceexhibits 4 + 4 coordination, Sri exhibits 4 + 2 + 2 coordination and Pd has 4 + 3 coordination. While the oxygen in the First four coordination with short M-O bonds are strongly held in the lattice, the oxygens in the second and higher coordinations with long M-O bonds are weakly bound, and they are the activated oxygen ill the lattice. Bond valence analysis shows that oxygen with valencies as low its 1.65 are created by the Sn and Pd ion Substitution. Another interesting observation is that H-2/TPR experiment of Ce1-xSnxO2 shows a broad peak starting from 200 to 500 degrees C, while the same reduction is achieved in a single step at similar to 110 degrees C in presence Pd2+ on. Substitution of Pd2+ ion thus facilitates synergistic reduction of the catalyst at lower temperature. We have shown that simultaneous reduction of the Ce4+ and Sr4+ ions by Pd-0 is the synergistic interaction leading to high oxygen storage capacity at low temperature.

The reaction of W(CO)(6) with 1-alkyl-2-(naphthyl-alpha-azo)imidazole (alpha-NaiR) has synthesized [W(CO)(5)(alpha-NaiR-N)] (alpha-NaiR-N refers to the monodentate imidazole-N donor ligand) at room temperature. The structure of[W(CO)(5)(alpha-NaiMe-N)] shows a monodentate imidazole-N coordination of 1-methyl-2-(naphthyl-alpha-azo)imidazole (alpha-NaiMe). The complexes are characterized by elemental, mass and other spectroscopic data (IR, UV-Vis, NMR). On refluxing in THF at 323 K, [W(CO)(5)(alpha-NaiR-N)] undergoes decarbonylation to give [W(CO)(4)(alpha-NaiR-N,N')] (alpha-NaiR-N,N' refers to the imidazole-N(N), azo-N(N') bidentate chelator). Cyclic voltammetry shows metal oxidation (W-0/W-1) and ligand reductions (azo/azo(-), azo(-)/azo(=)). The redox and electronic properties are explained by theoretical calculations using an optimized geometry. DFT computation of [W(CO)(5)(alpha-NaiMe-N)] suggests that the major contribution to the HOMO/HOMO - 1 come from W cl-orbitals and the orbitals of CO. The LUMOs are occupied by alpha-NaiMe functions. The back bonding interaction thus originates from the W(CO)(n) moiety to the LUMO of alpha-NaiR. A TD-DFT calculation has ascribed that HOMO/HOMO - 1 -> LUMO is a mixture of metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer underlying the CO -> azoimine contribution. The complexes show emission spectra at room temperature. [W(CO)(4)(alpha-NaiR-N,N')] shows a higher fluorescence quantum yield (phi = 0.05-0.07) than [W(CO)(5)(alpha-NaiR-N)] (phi = 0.01-0.02). Two new copper(II) complexes, [Cu-2(L-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [Cu(L-2)(ClO4)] (2), of the highly unsymmetrical tetradentate (N3O) Schiff base ligands HL1 and HL2 (where HL1 = N-(2-hydroxyacetophenone)-bis-3-aminopropylamine and HL2 = N-(salicyldehydine)-bis-3-aminopropylamine) have been synthesised using a template method. Their single crystal X-ray structures show that in complex 1 two independent copper(II) centers are doubly bridged through sphenoxo-O atoms (O1A and O1B) of the two ligands and each copper atom is five-coordinated with a distorted square pyramidal geometry. The asymmetric unit of complex 2 consists of two crystallographically independe N-(salicylidene) bis(aminopropyl)amine-copper(II) molecules, A and B, with similar square pyramidal geometries. Cryomagnetic susceptibility measurements (5-300 K) on complex 1 reveal a distinct antiferromagnetic interaction with J=-23.6 cm(-1), which is substantiated by a DFT calculation (J=-27.6 cm(-1)) using the B3LYP functional. Complex 1, immobilized over highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica, shows moderate catalytic activity for the epoxidation of cyclohexene and styrene in the presence of TBHP as an oxidant.

Three new solution processable quinoxaline based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type molecules have been synthesized for application in field effect transistors. These molecules were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculation gives deeper insight into the electronic structure of these molecules. The crystallinity and morphology features of thin film were investigated using X-ray diffraction. These molecules show liquid crystalline phase confirmed by DSC and optical polarizing microscopy. Investigation of their field effect transistor performance indicated that these molecules exhibited p-type mobility up to 9.7 x 10 (4) cm(2) V (1) s (1) and on/off ratio of 10(4). Six new copper metal complexes with formulas Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy) (H2L)](2) center dot H4L center dot 4 H2O (1), {Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy)-(H3L)}(2)(H2L)]center dot 2H(2)O (2), Cu(H2O)(1,10-phen)(H2L)](2)center dot 6H(2)O (3), Cu(2,2'-bpy)(H2L)](n)center dot nH(2)O (4), Cu(1,10-phen)(H2L)](n)center dot 3nH(2)O (5), and {Cu(2,2'-bpy)(MoO3)}(2)(L)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (6) have been synthesized starting from p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H4L) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as secondary linkers and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. All the complexes were synthesized by hydrothermal methods. A dinuclear motif (Cu-dimer) bridged by phosphonic acid represents a new class of simple building unit (SBU) in the construction of coordination architectures in metal phosphonate chemistry. The initial pH of the reaction mixture induced by the secondary linker plays an important role in the formation of the molecular phosphonates 1, 2, and 3. Temperature dependent hydrothermal synthesis of the compounds 1, 2, and 3 reveals the mechanism of the self assembly of the compounds based on the solubility of the phosphonic acid H4L. Two-dimensional coordination polymers 4, 5, and 6, which are formed by increasing the pH of the reaction mixture, comprise Cu-dimers as nodes, organic (H2L) and inorganic (Mo4O12) ligands as linkers. The void space-areas, created by the (4,4) connected nets in compounds 4 and 5, are occupied by lattice water molecules. Thus compounds 4 and 5 have the potential to accommodate guest species/molecules. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the compounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 reveal the antiferromagnetic interactions between the two Cu(II) ions in the eight membered ring, observed in their crystal structures. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation correlates the conformation of the Cu-dimer ring with the magnitude of the exchange parameter based on the torsion angle of the conformation.

The gas-phase infrared spectra of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD have been, recorded at three different temperatures using a multipass gas cell of 6 m optical path length. DFT calculation has also been carried out using 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets to look for the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, in them from the red shift and infrared absorption intensity enhancement of the bonded O-H band compared to that of the free O-H hand. Equilibrium population analysis With 10 conformers of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD at experimental temperatures were-carried out for the reconstruction of the Observed vibrational spectra at that temperature, using standard statistical relationships. The most abundant conformer at experimental temperatures, was identified. In 1,2-ED a red shift of 45 cm(-1) in the intramolecularly interacting O-H stretching vibrational band position and no significant intensity enhancement compared to that of-the free O-H have been observed. On the contrary, in one of the hydrogen bonded conformers of 1,4-BD, a 124 cm(-1) red shift in the O-H stretching frequency and 8.5 times-intensity enhancement for the ``bonded'' O-H compared to that of the ``free'' O-H is seen. On the basis of this comparative study, we have concluded that strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding exists in 1,4-BD. But there appears, to be weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding in 1,2-ED at temperatures of 303, 313, and 323 Km the gas phase We have found that most stable hydrogen-bonded conformers of 1,4-BD are less populated than some of the non-hydrogen-bonded conformers. Even for the 1,4-BD, the relative population of the g'GG'Gt conformer, which has a strong intramolecular, hydrogen bond, is less than what is predicted. Perhaps the intramolecular hydrogen bond plays a less Significant role in the relative stability,of the various Conformers than what has been predicted from calculations and prevails in the literature.

We report on the observation of stable p-type conductivity in B and N co-doped epitaxial ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Films grown at higher oxygen partial pressure (similar to 10(-1) Torr) shows p-type conductivity with a carrier concentration of similar to 3 x 10(16) cm(-3). This p-type conductivity is associated with the significant decrease in defect emission peaks due to the vacancy oxygen (V-O) and Schottky type-I native defects compared to films grown at low oxygen partial pressure (similar to 10(-5) Torr). The p-type conductivity is explained with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculation considering off-stoichiometric BN1+x in the ZnO lattice. (C) 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Oxygen storage/release (OSC) capacity is an important feature common to all three-way catalysts to combat harmful exhaust emissions. To understand the mechanism of improved OSC for doped CeO2, we undertook the structural investigation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2-TPR (temperature-programmed hydrogen reduction) and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations of transition-metal-, noble-metal-, and rare-earth (RE)-ion-substituted ceria. In this report, we present the relationship between the OSC and structural changes induced by the dopant ion in CeO2. Transition metal and noble metal ion substitution in ceria greatly enhances the reducibility of Ce1-xMxO2-delta (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ru), whereas rare-earth-ion-substituted Ce(1-x)A(x)O(2-delta) (A = La, Y) have very little effect in improving the OSC. Our simulated optimized structure shows deviation in cation oxygen bond length from ideal bond length of 2.34 angstrom (for CeO2). For example, our theoretical calculation for Ce28Mn4O62 structure shows that Mn-O bonds are in 4 + 2 coordination with average bond lengths of 2.0 and 3.06 angstrom respectively. Although the four short Mn-O bond lengths spans the bond distance region of Mn2O3, the other two Mn-O bonds are moved to longer distances. The dopant transition and noble metal ions also affects Ce coordination shell and results in the formation of longer Ce-O bonds as well. Thus longer cation oxygen bonds for both dopant and host ions results in enhanced synergistic reduction of the solid solution. With Pd ion substitution in Ce1-xMxO2-delta (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) further enhancement in OSC is observed in H-2-TPR. This effect is reflected in our model calculations by the presence of still longer bonds compared to the model without Pd ion doping. The synergistic effect is therefore due to enhanced reducibility of both dopant and host ion induced due to structural distortion of fluorite lattice in presence of dopant ion. For RE ions (RE = Y, La), our calculations show very little deviation of bonds lengths from ideal fluorite structure. The absence of longer Y-O/La-O and Ce-O bonds make the structure much less susceptible to reduction.

Two algorithms that improve upon the sequent-peak procedure for reservoir capacity calculation are presented. The first incorporates storage-dependent losses (like evaporation losses) exactly as the standard linear programming formulation does. The second extends the first so as to enable designing with less than maximum reliability even when allowable shortfall in any failure year is also specified. Together, the algorithms provide a more accurate, flexible and yet fast method of calculating the storage capacity requirement in preliminary screening and optimization models.

In this work, we theoretically examine recent pump/probe photoemission experiments on the strongly correlated charge-density-wave insulator TaS2.We describe the general nonequilibrium many-body formulation of time-resolved photoemission in the sudden approximation, and then solve the problem using dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group and a bare density of states calculated from density functional theory including the charge-density-wave distortion of the ion cores and spin-orbit coupling. We find a number of interesting results: (i) the bare band structure actually has more dispersion in the perpendicular direction than in the two-dimensional planes; (ii) the DMFT approach can produce upper and lower Hubbard bands that resemble those in the experiment, but the upper bands will overlap in energy with other higher energy bands; (iii) the effect of the finite width of the probe pulse is minimal on the shape of the photoemission spectra; and (iv) the quasiequilibrium approximation does not fully describe the behavior in this system.

In this paper we report the analysis of dc breakdown tests on mixtures of CC12F2, SF6, C-C4F8, 2-C4F8, N2, C02, CF4, CHF3, and 1,1,1-CH3CF3 gases on the basis of the NKH formula Vmix=k(pd)aNbUC developed by us earlier for the binary mixtures of SF6 with air, N2, N20, and CO2. It is shown that while a and c have the values 0.915 and 0.850 respectively as earlier, k and b depend on the component gases. There is a good agreement between the calculated values on the basis of the formula and measured values reported in the literature.
