Note on stereo-diagrams of molecules

The paper elucidates a simple way ooJ'dcriving the coordinates for &awing sfereo-&gram of molecules. This method is an alternative, but not a substitute, to the 'ORTEP (suggested by C. K. Johnsori) which, is extensively used in the literature. Illustrations are given using a progrunz which was written based on the method mentioned here. The program is also given in an appendix for practical help.

A Flexure-based Deployable Stereo Vision Mechanism and Temperature and Force Sensors for Laparoscopic Tools

This paper presents concepts, designs, and working prototypes of enhanced laparoscopic surgical tools. The enhancements are in equipping the tool with force and temperature sensing as well as image acquisition for stereo vision. Just as the pupils of our eyes are adequately spaced out and the distance between them is adjustable, two minute cameras mounted on a mechanism in our design can be moved closer or farther apart inside the inflated abdomen during the surgery. The cameras are fitted to a deployable mechanism consisting of flexural joints so that they can be inserted through a small incision and then deployed and moved as needed.A temperature sensor and a force sensor are mounted on either of the gripping faces of the surgical grasping tool to measure the temperature and gripping force, which need to be controlled for safe laparoscopic surgery. Analysis and Synthesis of Reverberation for Parametric Stereo Audio

We propose a parametric stereo coding analysis and synthesis directly in the MDCT domain using an analysis by synthesis parameter estimation. The stereo signal is represented by an equalized sum signal and spatialization parameters. Equalized sum signal and the spatialization parameters are obtained by sub-band analysis in the MDCT domain. The de-correlated signal required for the stereo synthesis is also generated in the MDCT domain. Subjective evaluation test using MUSHRA shows that the synthesized stereo signal is perceptually satisfactory and comparable to the state of the art parametric coders.

A high precision instrument to measure angular and binocular deviation introduced by aircraft windscreens by using a shadow casting technique

Objects viewed through transparent sheets with residual non-parallelism and irregularity appear shifted and distorted. This distortion is measured in terms of angular and binocular deviation of an object viewed through the transparent sheet. The angular and binocular deviations introduced are particularly important in the context of aircraft windscreens and canopies as they can interfere with decision making of pilots especially while landing, leading to accidents. In this work, we have developed an instrument to measure both the angular and binocular deviations introduced by transparent sheets. This instrument is especially useful in the qualification of aircraft windscreens and canopies. It measures the deviation in the geometrical shadow cast by a periodic dot pattern trans-illuminated by the distorted light beam from the transparent test specimen compared to the reference pattern. Accurate quantification of the shift in the pattern is obtained by cross-correlating the reference shadow pattern with the specimen shadow pattern and measuring the location of the correlation peak. The developed instrument is handy to use and computes both angular and binocular deviation with an accuracy of less than +/- 0.1 mrad (approximate to 0.036 mrad) and has an excellent repeatability with an error of less than 2%. Durability of rammed earth walls exposed for 20 years to natural weathering

This paper presents a study on the durability of different types of stabilised and unstabilised rammed earth walls. These rammed earth walls were constructed and exposed for 20 years to natural weathering, in a wet continental climate. None of these walls have shown complete collapse to date. A method to measure the rammed earth walls erosion by stereo-photogrammetry has been developed. The result shows that the mean erosion depth of the studied walls is about 2 mm (0.5% wall thickness) in the case of rammed earth wall stabilised with 5% by dry weight of hydraulic lime and about 6.4 mm (1.6% wall thickness) in the case of unstabilised rammed earth walls. The stabilisation enables to not use any plaster to protect the walls. In the case of the unstabilised rammed earth walls, an extrapolated lifetime longer than 60 years can be assessed. This shows a potential for the use of unstabilised rammed earth in the similar climatic conditions with this study. The method of stereo-photogrammetry used to measure the erosion of rammed earth walls on site may also help to calibrate and develop more pertinent laboratory test to assess the durability of rammed earth wall.

Synthetic studies towards the phloroglucin natural product hyperforin: construction of the fully prenylated bicyclic core

An approach towards the highly functionalized bicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-one core of the complex PPAP-based natural product hyperforin, with the full complement of prenyl substituents in required stereo-disposition, is delineated.

Contributions to organic synthesis and reaction mechanisms

Development of new methods, leading to the first stereo-specific total synthesis of a steroid,viz equilenin, and of estrone and their derivatives and of several important synthones, useful for the preparation of physiologically active steroids, and the first conversion of an equilenane to estrane have been described. An account of the achievement of original syntheses of testosterone and its isomers and derivatives and degradation products, urinary steroids, terpenes and their important degradation products has been given. Mechanisms of Dieckmann cyclization, a novel dehydrogenation-addition reaction involving abietic acid and tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone, a rearrangement involving a substitution of cyclopentanone-2-carboxylic ester have been elucidated. An abnormaluv absorption exhibited by saturated 1,2-dicyano esters has been rationalized. Divergences in theord data of testosterone and 19-nortesto-sterone from their isomers have been explained by x-ray crystallographic studies of 8-isotestosterone, 8-iso-10-isotestosterone and 8-iso-10-iso-19-nortestosterone. A tentative explanation for the difference in their physiological activities has been suggested.

An enantiospecific approach to thapsanes from R-carvone: synthesis of (−)-thaps-8-en-5-ol†

The first enantiospecific synthesis of a thapsane, containing three contiguous quaternary carbon atoms, is accomplished starting from R-carvone. An intramolecular alkylation and an intramolecular diazoketone cyclopropanation reaction were employed for the stereo- and regiospecific generation of three contiguous quaternary carbon atoms present in the thapsane framework.

An SIMD machine for low-level vision

This paper presents an SIMD machine which has been tuned to execute low-level vision algorithms employing the relaxation labeling paradigm. Novel features of the design include: 1. (1) a communication scheme capable of window accessing under a single instruction. 2. (2) flexible I/O instructions to load overlapped data segments; and 3. (3) data-conditional instructions which can be nested to an arbitrary degree. A time analysis of the stereo correspondence problem, as implemented on a simulated version of the machine using the probabilistic relaxation technique, shows a speed up of almost N2 for an N × N array of PEs.

A Vicarious One-Pot Transformation of a Fluorocyclitol to a Polycyclitol: Observation of a Formal 4-Fold Axial-Equatorial Epimerization on a Conformationally Locked Scaffold

A conformationally locked fluoropentol undergoes an interesting transformation to (trans,anti,trans,anti,trans)-perhydro-2,3,4a,6,7,8a-naphthalenehexol essentially under conditions of base-induced transesterification. The proposed rationale for the observed metamorphosis involves a nucleophilic displacement of fluoride, and subsequent stereo- and regioselective anti-Furst-Plattner-type ring-opening of the epoxide thus formed.
