The influence of 0.03 and 0.08 at. % Ag additions on the clustering of Zn atoms in an Al-4.4 at. % Zn alloy has been studied by resistometry. The effect of quenching and ageing temperatures shows that the ageing-ratio method of calculating the vacancy-solute atom binding energy is not applicable to these alloys. Zone-formation in Al-Zn is unaffected by Ag additions, but the zone-reversion process seems to be influenced. Apparent vacancy-formation energies in the binary and ternary alloys have been used to evaluate the v-Ag atom binding energy as 0.21 eV. It is proposed that, Ag and Zn being similar in size, the relative vacancy binding results from valency effects, and that in Al-Zn-Ag alloys clusters of Zn and Ag may form simultaneously, unaffected by the presence of each other. © 1970 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Al-4.4 a/oZn and Al-4.4 a/oZn with Ag, Ce, Dy, Li, Nb, Pt, Y, or Yb, alloys have been investigated by resistometry with a view to study the solute-vacancy interactions and clustering kinetics in these alloys. Solute-vacancy binding energies have been evaluated for all these elements by making use of appropriate methods of evaluation. Ag and Dy additions yield some interesting results and these have been discussed in the thesis. Solute-vacancy binding energy values obtained here have been compared with other available values and discussed. A study of the type of interaction between vacancies and solute atoms indicates that the valency effect is more predominant than the elastic effect.

The existence of an icosahedral phase in Mg−Al−Ag is better understood on a crystallographic basis rather than on a quantum structural diagram basis. The quasicrystalline structure is delineated in terms of quasiperiodic arrangement of Pauling triacontahedra, which can be identified in the equilibrium structure. Subtle differences in the electron diffraction patterns have been recorded compared to the ideal quasicrystalline pattern. The misalignment of spots and distortions are better attributed to higher order rational approximate structure than anisotropic phason strain. Ares of diffuse intensity have been related to the ordering among the atoms in the clusters.

While bonding between d(10) atoms and ions in molecular systems has been well studied, less attention has been paid to interactions between such seemingly closed shell species in extended inorganic solids. In this contribution, we present visualizations of the electronic structures of the delafossites ABO(2) (A = Cu, Ag, Au) with particular emphasis on the nature of d(10)-d(10) interactions in the close packed plane of the coinage metal ion. We find that on going from Cu to Ag to Au, the extent of bonding between A and A increases. However, the structures (in terms of distances) of these compounds are largely determined by the strongly ionic 13,11 0 interaction and for the larger B ions Sc, In and Y, the A atoms are sufficiently well-separated that A-A bonding is almost negligible. We also analyze some interesting differences between Ag and Au, including the larger A-O covalency of the Au. The trends in electronic structure suggest that the Ag and Au compounds are not good candidate transparent conducting oxides. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. The Ag-Ni system is characterized by large differences in atomic sizes (14%) and a positive heat of mixing (+23 kJ mol(-1)). The binary equilibrium diagram for this system therefore exhibits a large miscibility gap in both solid and liquid state. This paper explores the size-dependent changes in microstructure and the suppression of the miscibility gap which occurs when free alloy particles of nanometer size are synthesized by co-reduction of Ag and Ni metal precursors. The paper reports that complete mixing between Ag and Ni atoms could be achieved for smaller nanoparticles (<7 nm). These particles exhibit a single-phase solid solution with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. With increase in size, the nanoparticles revealed two distinct regions. One of the regions is composed of pure Ag. This region partially surrounds a region of fcc solid solution at an early stage of decomposition. Experimental observations were compared with the results obtained from the thermodynamic calculations, which compared the free energies corresponding to a physical mixture of pure Ag and Ni phases and a fcc Ag-Ni solid solution for different particle sizes. Results from the theoretical calculations revealed that, for the Ag-Ni system, solid solution was energetically preferred over the physical mixture configuration for particle sizes of 7 nm and below. The experimentally observed two-phase microstructure for larger particles was thus primarily due to the growth of Ag-rich regions epitaxially on initially formed small fcc Ag-Ni nanoparticles. The reversible e.m.f. of galvanic cells: stainlesssteel,Ir,Pb+PbO|CaO+ZrO2|Ag+Pb+PbO,Ir,stainlesssteel,I and Pt,Ni+NiO|CaO+ZrO2|O(Pb+Ag),Cermet,Pt,II incorporating solid oxide electrolytes were measured as a function of alloy composition. In lead-rich alloys, the temperature dependence of the e.m.f. of cell I was also investigated. Since the solubility of oxygen in the alloy is small, the relative partial molar properties of lead in the binary Ag + Pb system can be calculated from the e.m.f. of this cell. The Gibbs free energies obtained in this study are combined with selected calorimetric data to provide a complete thermodynamic discription of liquid Ag + Pb Alloys. The activity coefficient of oxygen in the whole range of Ag + Pb alloys at 1273 K have been obtained from the e.m.f. of cell II; and these are found to deviate positively from Alcock and Richardson's quasichemical equation when the average co-ordination number of all the atoms is assigned a value of 2.

Electrodeposition produced features with a dendritic morphology and features with a branched wire like morphology made up of about 20 nm sized particles. Both the features contained Ag and Ni atoms in a solid solution arrangement. However, the feature made up of nanoparticles contained a greater concentration of Ni as compared to the Ni content in the dendritic feature. The greater Ni content in the Ag-Ni solid solution for the features with nanoparticles when compared to the dendritic morphology features strongly indicated the effect of curvature in increasing the extent of miscibility between bulk immiscible atoms. Ag-Fe nanoparticles with a highly Ag rich average composition were synthesized by the sonochemical route. Silver-iron system exhibits a wide miscibility gap in the bulk materials. Interestingly, a graded compositional profile along the nanoparticle radius was observed. Regions at and near the surface of the nanoparticle contained both Ag and Fe atoms. The composition got relatively deficient Fe towards the center of the particle with particle core made up of pure Ag. Alloying of Ag and Fe is confirmed by the absence of diffraction signal corresponding to pure Fe phase and presence of a paramagnetic phase in nanoparticles containing a diamagnetic (Ag) and ferromagnetic (Fe) elements.

This work provides an electrodeposition-based methodology for synthesizing multicomponent nanowires containing Ag, Co and Ni atoms. Nanowire morphology was obtained by using an anodic alumina membrane with cylindrical pores of similar to 200-nm diameter. Structural, compositional and magnetic characterization revealed that the as-synthesized nanowires adopted a core-shell microstructure. The core (axial region) contained pure Ag phase volumes with a plate-like morphology oriented perpendicular to the nanowire axis. The shell (peripheral region) contained pure Ag nanoparticles along with superparamagnetic Co and Ni rich clusters.

Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solder alloys are the best Pb free alternative for electronic industry. Since their introduction, efforts are made to improve their efficacies by tuning the processing and composition to achieve lower melting point and better wettability. Nanostructured alloys with large boundary content are known to depress the melting points of metals and alloys. In this article we explore this possibility by processing prealloyed SAC alloys close to SAC305 composition (Sn-3wt%Ag-0.5wt%Cu) by mechanical milling which results in the formation of nanostructured alloys. Pulverisette ball mill (P7) and Vibratory ball mills are used to carry out the milling of the powders at room temperature and at lower temperatures (-104 A degrees C), respectively. We report a relatively smaller depression of melting point ranging up to 5 A degrees C with respect to original alloys. The minimum grain sizes achieved and the depression of melting point are similar for both room temperature and low-temperature processed samples. An attempt has been made to rationalize the observations in terms of the basic processes occurring during the milling.

PbS quantum dots capped with mercaptoethanol (C2H5OSH) have been synthesized in poly vinyl alcohol and used to investigate their photoluminescence (PL) response to various ions such as zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). The enhancement in the PL intensity was observed with specific ions namely Zn, Cd, Hg and Ag. Among these four ions, the PL response to Hg and Ag even at sub-micro-molar concentrations was quite high, compared to that of Zn and Cd. It was observed that the change in Pb and S molar ratio has profound effect on the sensitivity of these ions. These results indicate that the sensitivity of these QDs could be fine-tuned by controlling the S concentration at the surface. Contrary to the above, Cu quenched the photoluminescence. In Cd based QDs related ion probing, Hg and Cu was found to have quenching properties, however, our PbS QDs have quenching property only for Cu ions. This was attributed to the formation HgS at the surface that has bandgap higher than PbS. Another interesting property of PbS in PVA observed is photo-brightening mechanism due to the curing of the polymer with laser. However, the presence of excess ions at the surface changes its property to photo-darkening/brightening that depends on the direction of carrier transfer mechanism (from QDs to the surface adsorbed metal ions or vice-versa). which is an interesting feature for metal ion detectivity.

Metal Auger line intensity ratios were shown by Rao and others to be directly related to the occupancy of valence states. It is now shown that these intensity ratios are more generally related to the effective charge on the metal atom. The Auger intensity ratios are also directly proportional to valence band intensities of metals. Correlations of the intensity ratios with Auger parameters have also been examined.

Based on XPS and UVPS studies, it is shown that oxygen is preferentially adsorbed molecularly in the singlet state on Cu and Ag surfaces containing presorbed chlorine. Adsorption of chlorine on Cu and Ag surfaces containing presorbed atomic oxygen causes a disappearance of the oxygen. Extended Hückel calculations predict the observed behaviour.

Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase (MPI) catalyzes the inter-conversion of mannose 6-phosphate and fructose 6-phosphate. X-ray crystal structures of MPI from Salmonella typhimurium in the apo form (with no metal bound) and in the holo form (with bound Zn2+) and two other structures with yttrium bound at an inhibitory site and complexed with Zn2+ and fructose 6-phosphate (F6P) were determined in order to gain insights into the structure and the isomerization mechanism. Isomerization involves acid/base catalysis with proton transfer between the C1 and C2 atoms of the substrate. His99, Lys132, His131 and Asp270 are close to the substrate and are likely to be the residues involved in proton transfer. The interactions observed at the active site suggest that the ring-opening step is probably catalyzed by His99 and Asp270. An active-site loop consisting of residues 130-133 undergoes conformational changes upon substrate binding. Zn2+ binding induces structural order in the loop consisting of residues 50-54. The metal atom appears to play a role in substrate binding and is probably also important for maintaining the architecture of the active site. Isomerization probably follows the previously suggested cis-enediol mechanism.

A study of the transport properties of layered crystalline semiconductors GeS (undoped and doped with Ag, P impurity) under quasihydrostatic pressure using Bridgman anvil system is made for the first time. Pressure-induced effects in undoped crystals reveal initial rise in resistivity followed by two broad peaks at higher pressures. Silver doping induces only minor changes in the behaviour except removing the second peak. Phosphorous impurity is found to have drastic effect on the transport properties. Temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits two activation energies having opposite pressure coefficients. Results are discussed in the light of intrinsic features of the layered semiconductors.
