C13H14N2OS, M r = 246, is monoclinic, P21/c, with a = 7.214(1), b = 8.935(5), c = 20.243 (6) A, fl =99.42 (2) °, V = 1304.83 ,~3, Z = 4, D m = 1.23, D x =1.25 Mg m -3, p(Mo Ka, 2 = 0.7107 A) = 0.232 mm -~,F(000) = 520. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R value of 0.042 using 1127 intensity measurements. The C=C and C-N bond distances differ considerably from their normal values. An appreciable rotation [38.3(4) °] about the C=C bond is observed, the bond length being 1.414(5)A.This is due to the combination of push-pull and steric effects.

The paper studies the influence of vectored suction or injection on the flow and heat transfer at the stagnation point of a two-dimensional body (a cylinder) and an axisymmetric body (a sphere) with allowance for the effects of variable gas properties. The analysis is based on the boundary-layer equations in dimensionless form for the steady compressible fluid with variable properties in the stagnation region of a two-dimensional or an axisymmetric body with tangential and normal surface mass transfer under similarity requirements. It is shown that the variation of the density-viscosity product across the boundary layer has a strong effect on the skin friction and heat transfer. This gives rise to a point of inflection which can be removed by suction and by increasing the wall temperature. The skin friction and heat transfer are significantly affected by the pressure gradient parameter.

The combined milling at cryogenic temperature as well as room temperature (RT) has been carried out to prepare ultrafine NaCl crystallites. The milling has been done in evacuated tungsten carbide vials backfilled with high-purity Ar. The results indicate the effect duration of cryomilling prior to RT milling has a strong effect on the final crystallite size. The deformation aided sintering of NaCl crystallites during RT milling and leads to the formation of bimodal distribution of crystallites. The cuboidal-shaped NaCl crystallite undergoes a roughening transition due to plastic deformation. The experimental results are explained using the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of NaCl single crystals and plastic-deformation-induced roughening.

Analytical solutions of the generalized Bloch equations for an arbitrary set of initial values of the x, y, and z magnetization components are given in the rotating frame. The solutions involve the decoupling of the three coupled differential equations such that a third-order differential equation in each magnetization variable is obtained. In contrast to the previously reported solutions given by Torrey, the present attempt paves the way for more direct physical insight into the behavior of each magnetization component. Special cases have been discussed that highlight the utility of the general solutions. Representative trajectories of magnetization components are given, illustrating their behavior with respect to the values of off-resonance and initial conditions. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

We address a physically based analytical model of quantum capacitance (C-Q) in a bilayer graphene nanoribbon (BGN) under the application of an external longitudinal static bias. We demonstrate that as the gap (Delta) about the Dirac point increases, a phenomenological population inversion of the carriers in the two sets of subbands occurs. This results in a periodic and composite oscillatory behavior in the C-Q with the channel potential, which also decreases with increase in Delta. We also study the quantum size effects on the C-Q, which signatures heavy spatial oscillations due to the occurrence of van Hove singularities in the total density-of-states function of both the sets of subbands. All the mathematical results as derived in this paper converge to the corresponding well-known solution of graphene under certain limiting conditions and this compatibility is an indirect test of our theoretical formalism. The potential of Citrobacter freundii, a Gram negative bacteria for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent chromium (Cr(III))) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Bioremediation of Cr(VI) involved both biosorption and bioreduction processes, as compared to only biosorption process observed with respect to Cr(III) bioremediation. In the case of Cr(VI) bioremediation studies, about 59 % biosorption was achieved at an equilibrium time of 2 h, initial Cr(VI) concentration of 4 mg/L, pH 1 and a biomass loading of 5x10(11) cells/mL. The remainder, 41 %, was found to be in the form of Cr(111) ions owing to bioreduction of Cr(VI) by the bacteria resulting in the absence of Cr(VI) ions in the residue, there by meeting the USEPA specifications. Similar studies were carried out using Cr(III) solution for an equilibrium time of 2 h, Cr(III) concentration of 4 mg/L, pH 3 and a biomass loading of 6.3x10(11) cells/mL., wherein a maximum biosorption of about 30 % was achieved.

This paper describes two new Gomphonema species from the lesser Himalayas, India, with their valve morphology using light and scanning electron microscopy. The two species, Gomphonema juettnerii sp. nov. and G. doonensis sp. nov., were found in Nalota stream in Doon Valley of Uttarakhand State. Main features of G. juettnerii are valve outline, shape of the areolae and striae pattern and presence of stigma. Main features of G. doonensis are rounded headpole, striae made by doubly punctate striae and features in central area. A detailed discussion on doubly punctate striae in members of gomphonemoid diatoms is presented.

It has been shown earlier1] that the relaxed force constants (RFCs) could be used as a measure of bond strength only when the bonds form a part of the complete valence internal coordinates (VIC) basis. However, if the bond is not a part of the complete VIC basis, its RFC is not necessarily a measure of bond strength. Sometimes, it is possible to have a complete VIC basis that does not contain the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IMHB) as part of the basis. This means the RFC of IMHB is not necessarily a measure of bond strength. However, we know that IMHB is a weak bond and hence its RFC has to be a measure of bond strength. We resolve this problem of IMHB not being part of the complete basis by postulating `equivalent' basis sets where IMHB is part of the basis at least in one of the equivalent sets of VIC. As long as a given IMHB appears in one of the equivalent complete VIC basis sets, its RFC could be used as a measure of bond strength parameter.

Objectives:To determine if there is a biological mechanism that explains the association between HIV disease progression and increased mortality with low circulating vitamin D levels; specifically, to determine if restoring vitamin D levels induced T-cell functional changes important for antiviral immunity.Design:This was a pilot, open-label, three-arm prospective phase 1 study. Methods:We recruited 28 patients with low plasma vitamin D (<50nmol/l 25-hydroxyvitamin D3), comprising 17 HIV+ patients (11 on HAART, six treatment-naive) and 11 healthy controls, who received a single dose of 200000IU oral cholecalciferol. Advanced T-cell flow cytometry methods measured CD4(+) T-cell function associated with viral control in blood samples at baseline and 1-month after vitamin D supplementation. Results:One month of vitamin D supplementation restored plasma levels to sufficiency (>75nmol/l) in 27 of 28 patients, with no safety issues. The most striking change was in HIV+ HAART+ patients, where increased frequencies of antigen-specific T cells expressing macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 - an important anti-HIV blocking chemokine - were observed, with a concomitant increase in plasma MIP-1, both of which correlated significantly with vitamin D levels. In addition, plasma cathelicidin - a vitamin D response gene with broad antimicrobial activity - was enhanced. Conclusion:Vitamin D supplementation modulates disease-relevant T-cell functions in HIV-infected patients, and may represent a useful adjunct to HAART therapy.
