Synthesis of enantiopure bis-aziridines, bis-epoxides, and aziridino-epoxides from D-mannitol

A practical synthesis of enantiopure bis-aziridines 11 and 15, bis-epoxides 12 and 17, and aziridino-epoxides 27 and 30 is reported using inexpensive d-mannitol as the starting material. The key transformation involves the reductive cleavage of bis-benzylidene acetal 3 to form dimesylate 4, which was further converted to monoazides and diazides followed by reduction, mesylation, and cyclization to furnish the required compounds in good yields.

Purification and characterization of an alpha-D-glucuronidase from a thermophilic fungus, Thermoascus aurantiacus

An alpha-D-glucuronidase was purified from the culture filtrates of Thermoascus aurantiacus. A simple colorimetric method for its assay is reported. The enzyme is a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 118,000. It acts optimally at pH 4.5. It shows maximum activity at 65 degrees C. The t 1/2 at 70 degrees C was 40 min. It specifically cleaved the alpha-(1----2) linkage between 4-O-methyl-alpha-D-glucuronic acid and the xylose residue in xylan and several glucurono-xylooligosaccharides.

Probing top-gated field effect transistor of reduced graphene oxide monolayer made by dielectrophoresis

We demonstrate a top-gated field effect transistor made of a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayer (graphene) by dielectrophoresis. The Raman spectrum of RGO flakes of typical size of 5 mu m x 5 mu m shows a single 2D band at 2687 cm(-1), characteristic of single-layer graphene.The two-probe current-voltage measurements of RGO flakes, deposited in between the patterned electrodes with a gap of 2.5 mu m using ac dielectrophoresis, show ohmic behavior with a resistance of similar to 37 k Omega. The temperature dependence of the resistance (R) of RGO measured between 305 K and 393 K yields a temperature coefficient of resistance [dR/dT]/R similar to -9.5 x 10(-4)/K, the same as that of mechanically exfoliated single-layer graphene. The field-effect transistor action was obtained by electrochemical top-gating using a solid polymer electrolyte (PEO + LiClO4) and Pt wire. The ambipolar nature of graphene flakes is observed up to a doping level of similar to 6 x 10(12)/cm(2) and carrier mobility of similar to 50 cm(2)/V s. The source-drain current characteristics show a tendency of current saturation at high source-drain voltage which is analyzed quantitatively by a diffusive transport model. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. An environment-friendly Beckmann rearrangement: the diazotisation of ketoxime carbamates

The titled reaction was effected with iso-amyl nitrite or sodium nitrite, both in cone. H2SO4 at 0-25 degrees C in excellent yields (55-98%). Apart from the mild temperatures employed, organic solvents and reagents can be avoided, and the by-products are CO2 and N-2, so the conditions are environment-friendly. Integrating strong and weak discontinuities without integration subcells and example applications in an XFEM/GFEM framework

Partition of unity methods, such as the extended finite element method, allows discontinuities to be simulated independently of the mesh (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng. 1999; 45:601-620). This eliminates the need for the mesh to be aligned with the discontinuity or cumbersome re-meshing, as the discontinuity evolves. However, to compute the stiffness matrix of the elements intersected by the discontinuity, a subdivision of the elements into quadrature subcells aligned with the discontinuity is commonly adopted. In this paper, we use a simple integration technique, proposed for polygonal domains (Int. J. Nuttier Meth. Engng 2009; 80(1):103-134. DOI: 10.1002/nme.2589) to suppress the need for element subdivision. Numerical results presented for a few benchmark problems in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics and a multi-material problem show that the proposed method yields accurate results. An alpha-aminomethyl carbanion equivalent via a novel Barbier reaction: (1H-naphtho[1,8-de]-1,2,3-triazin-2-yl)methyl anion

A novel sonication-promoted Barbier reaction putatively generated the titled species from the corresponding naphthotriazinylmethyl chloride and magnesium in THF: its formal addition to a variety of carbonyl compounds in situ occurred in excellent yields. Subsequent catalytic hydrogenolysis of the triazine moiety demasked the amine, thus defining a route to various phenylethylamines (including the alkaloid 'mescaline'), or ethanolamines (in two cases), in excellent overall yields. beta -Haloenones react readily with benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate to form the corresponding vinyl disulfides in good yields.

Nucleotide-sequence of 5S RNA from mycobacterium-smegmatis

32P labelled 5S RNA isolated fromMycobacterium smegmatis was digested withT 1 and pancreatic ribonucleases separately and fingerprinted by two dimensional high voltage electrophoresis on thin-layer DEAE-cellulose plates. The radioactive spots were sequenced and their molar yields were determined. The chain length of the 5S RNA was found to be 120. It showed resemblances to both prokaryotic and eukaryotic 5S RNAs.

Isobaric electrical resistance along the critical line in nickel: An experimental test of universality

High-precision measurement of the electrical resistance of nickel along its critical line, a first attempt of this kind, as a function of pressure to 47.5 kbar is reported. Our analysis yields the values of the critical exponents α=α’=-0.115±0.005 and the amplitude ratios ‖A/A’‖=1.17±0.07 and ‖D/D’‖=1.2±0.1. These values are in close agreement with those predicted by renormalization-group (RG) theory. Moreover, this investigation provides an unambiguous experimental verification to one of the key consequences of RG theory that the critical exponents and amplitudes ratios are insensitive to pressure variation in nickel, a Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Purification and characterization of endo-1,4-β-xylanase from Paecilomyces varioti Bainier

An endo-xylanase (1,4-β-d-xylanxylanohydrolase EC 3.2.1.8) was isolated from the culture filtrate of Paecilomyces varioti Bainier. The enzyme was purified 3.2 fold with a 60% yield by gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography. The purified enzyme had a molecular weight of 25,000 with a sedimentation coefficient of 2.2 S. The isoelectric point of the enzyme was 3.9. The enzyme was obtained in crystalline form. The optimum pH range was 5.5–7.0 and the temperature, 65°C. The Michaelis constant was 2.5 mg larchwood xylan/ml. The enzyme was found to degrade xylan by an endo mechanism producing arabinose, xylobiose, xylo- and arabinosylxylo-oligosaccharides, during the initial stages of hydrolysis. On prolonged incubation, xylotriose, arabinosylxylotriose and xylobiose were the major products with traces of xylotetraose, xylose and arabinose.

Amido binding to ReO3+ core: Synthesis, structure and intermolecular interactions

The light green coloured complexes of general formula [(ReO)-O-V(L)CI(OH2)]Cl have been synthesised in good yields by reacting [RcvOCl(3)(AsPh3)21 with HL in dichloromethane in dinitrogen atmosphere. Here, L- is the deprotonated form of N',N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (HL1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (HL2) and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N-diethylethylenediamine (HL3). Single crystal X-ray structure determination of [(ReO)-O-V(L-1)Cl(OH2)Cl confirms the amido binding of ReO3+ species. In the solid state of [(ReO)-O-V(L-1)Cl(OH2)]Cl, the coordinated and counter chloride ions are engaged in Re-Cl... H-C(ring), Cl...H-C(ring) and Re(OH2)...Cl hydrogen bonding and forming of a supramolecular network in the solid state. The subunit of the supramolecular network consists of one eight-membered and two nine-membered hydrogen bonded rings. The average diameters of eight-membered and nine-membered rings are similar to 3.70 and similar to 5.26 angstrom, respectively.

Improved synthesis of carbon nanotubes with junctions and of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Pyrolysis of thiophene over nickel nanoparticles dispersed on silica is shown to yield Y-junction carbon nanotubes with smaller diameters than those obtained by the pyrolysis of organometallic-thiophene mixtures. In the presence of water vapour, the pyrolysis of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures yields single-walled nanotubes, as well as relatively narrow-diameter carbon nanotubes with Y-junctions. Pyrolysis-of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures, in the absence of water vapour, only gives nanotubes with T- and Y-junctions.

A Novel Synthetic Route For The Preparation Of Ammonium And Alkali-Metal Tetrafluoroborates And Alkyl Substituted Ammonium Tetrafluoroborates Using Pyridinium Tetrafluoroborate As The Precursor

Ammonium and alkali metal tetrafluoroborates have been prepared by the cation exchange reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with the corresponding hydroxides/halides. The reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl amines at room temperature gives rise to mono-, di- and tri-alkylammonium tetrafluoroborates, respectively. The yields are good and the samples are of high purity. The products have been characterised by elemental analysis, IR and PMR spectroscopy. The spectral data for most of the compounds are reported for the first time.
