Li-doped ZnO thin films (Zn1-xLixO, x=0.05-0.15) were grown by pulsed-laser ablation technique. Highly c-axis-oriented films were obtained at a growth temperature of 500 degrees C. Ferroelectricity in Zn1-xLixO was found from the temperature-dependent dielectric constant and from the polarization hysteresis loop. The transition temperature (T-c) varied from 290 to 330 K as the Li concentration increased from 0.05 to 0.15. It was found that the maximum value of the dielectric constant at T-c is a function of Li concentration. A symmetric increase in memory window with the applied gate voltage is observed for the ferroelectric thin films on a p-type Si substrate. A ferroelectric P-E hysteresis loop was observed for all the compositions. The spontaneous polarization (P-s) and coercive field (E-c) of 0.6 mu C/cm(2) and 45 kV/cm were obtained for Zn0.85Li0.15O thin films. These observations reveal that partial replacement of host Zn by Li ions induces a ferroelectric phase in the wurtzite-ZnO semiconductor. The dc transport studies revealed an Ohmic behavior in the lower-voltage region and space-charge-limited conduction prevailed at higher voltages. The optical constants were evaluated from the transmission spectrum and it was found that Li substitution in ZnO enhances the dielectric constant.

Monophasic Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O15 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies carried out on the as synthesized powdered samples confirmed the phase to be a four-layer Aurivillius that crystallizes in an orthorhombic A2(1)am space group. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the sintered sample were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 27-700 degrees C temperature range at various frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz). A sharp dielectric anomaly was observed at 580 degrees C for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at 200 degrees C and the associated remnant polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were found to be 7.4 mu C/cm(2) and 34.8 kV/cm, respectively. AC conductivity analysis confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms in the ferroelectric region. Activation energies calculated from the Arrhenius plots were similar to 0.24 eV and similar to 0.84 eV in the 300-450 degrees C and 450-580 degrees C temperature ranges, respectively. Gd2O3:Eu3+ (0.5-8.0 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared by low temperature solution combustion method using metal nitrates as oxidizers and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as a fuel. The phosphors are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. PXRD patterns of as-formed and calcined (800 degrees C, 3 h) Gd2O3 powders exhibit monoclinic phase with mean crystallite sizes ranging from 20 to 50 nm. Eu3+ doping changes the structure from monoclinic to mixed phase of monoclinic and cubic. SEM micrographs shows the products are foamy, agglomerated and fluffy in nature due to the large amount of gases liberated during combustion reaction. Upon 254 nm excitation the photoluminescence of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ particles show red emission at 611 nm corresponding to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition. It is observed that PL intensity increases with calcination temperature. This might be attributed to better crystallization and eliminates the defects, which serve as centers of non-radiative relaxation for nanomaterials. It is observed that the optical energy gap (E-g) is widened with increase Eu3+ content. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Core-shell CoFe2O4@BaTiO3 nanoparticles and nanotubes have been prepared using a combination of solution processing and high temperature calcination. Both the core-shell nanostructures exhibit magnetic and dielectric hysteresis at room temperature and magnetoelectric effect. The dielectric constant of both the nanocomposites decreases upon application of magnetic field. The core-shell nanoparticles exhibit 1.7% change in magnetocapacitance around 134 K at 1 T, while the core-shell nanotubes show a remarkable 4.5% change in magnetocapacitance around 310 K at 2 T.(C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. We offer a technique, motivated by feedback control and specifically sliding mode control, for the simulation of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) that describe common engineering systems such as constrained multibody mechanical structures and electric networks. Our algorithm exploits the basic results from sliding mode control theory to establish a simulation environment that then requires only the most primitive of numerical solvers. We circumvent the most important requisite for the conventionalsimulation of DAEs: the calculation of a set of consistent initial conditions. Our algorithm, which relies on the enforcement and occurrence of sliding mode, will ensure that the algebraic equation is satisfied by the dynamic system even for inconsistent initial conditions and for all time thereafter. A hydrothermal reaction of a mixture of ZnCl2, V2O5, ethylenediamine and water gave rise to a layered poly oxovanadate material. clusters. These clusters, with all the vanadium ions in the +4 state, are connected together through Zn(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(2) linkers forming a two-dimensional structure. The layers are also separated by distorted trigonal bipyramidal [Zn-2(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(5)] complexes. The Structure, thus, presents a dual role for the Zn-ethylenediamine complex. The magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that the interactions between the V centres in I are predominantly antiferromagnetic in nature and the compound shows highly frustrated behaviour. The magnetic properties are compared to the theoretical calculations based oil the Heisenberg model, in addition to correlating to the structure. Crystal data for the complexes are presented.

It has been possible to identify two critical compositions in the IV-VI chalcogenide glassy system GexSe100-x by the anomalous variations of the high-pressure electrical resistivity behavior. The first critical composition, the chemical threshold, refers to the stoichiometric composition. The second critical composition, identified recently as the mechanical percolation threshold, is connected with the structural rigidity of the material.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates via sol-gel technique using zinc acetate dihydrate as precursor by spin coating of the sol at 2000 rpm. Effects of annealing temperature on optical, structural and photo luminescence properties of the deposited ZnO films have been investigated. The phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure was observed at an annealing temperature of 400 degrees C. An average transmittance of 87% in the visible region has been obtained at room temperature. The optical transmittance has slightly increased with increase of annealing temperature. The band gap energy was estimated by Tauc's method and found to be 3.22 eV at room temperature. The optical band gap energy has decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity increased with annealing temperature up to 200 degrees C and decreased at 300 degrees C. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The significance of two interface arginine residues on the structural integrity of an obligatory dimeric enzyme thymidylate synthase (TS) from Lactobacillus casei was investigated by thermal and chemical denaturation. While the R178F mutant showed apparent stability to thermal denaturation by its decreased tendency to aggregate, the Tm of the R218K mutant was lowered by 5 degrees C. Equilibrium denaturation studies in guanidinium chloride (GdmCl) and urea indicate that in both the mutants, replacement of Arg residues results in more labile quaternary and tertiary interactions. Circular dichroism studies in aqueous buffer suggest that the protein interior in R218K may be less well-packed as compared to the wild type protein. The results emphasize that quaternary interactions may influence the stability of the tertiary fold of TS. The amino acid replacements also lead to notable alteration in the ability of the unfolding intermediate of TS to aggregate. The aggregated state of partially unfolded intermediate in the R178F mutant is stable over a narrower range of denaturant concentrations. In contrast, there is an exaggerated tendency on the part of R218K to aggregate in intermediate concentrations of the denaturant. The 3 A crystal structure of the R178F mutant reveals no major structural change as a consequence of amino acid substitution. The results may be rationalized in terms of mutational effects on both the folded and unfolded state of the protein. Site specific amino acid substitutions are useful in identifying specific regions of TS involved in association of non-native protein structures.

Nucleotide pyrophosphatase of mung bean seedlings has earlier been isolated in our laboratory in a dimeric form (Mr 65,000) and has been shown to be converted to a tetramer by AMP and to a monomer by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate. All the molecular forms were enzymatically active with different kinetic properties. By a modified procedure using blue-Sepharose affinity chromatography, we have now obtained a dimeric form of the enzyme which is desensitized to AMP interaction. The molecular weight of the desensitized form of the enzyme was found to be the same as that of the native dimeric enzyme. However, the desensitized enzyme functioned with a linear time course, contrary to the biphasic time course exhibited by the native enzyme. In addition, it was not converted to a tetramer on the addition of AMP, had only one binding site for adenine nucleotides, and p-hydroxy-mercuribenzoate had no effect on the time course of the reaction or on the molecular weight of the enzyme. The temperature optimum of the desensitized enzyme was found to be 67 °C in contrast to the optimum of 49 °C for the native dimer. Fifty percent of the tryptophan residues of the desensitized enzyme were not accessible for quenching by iodide. Fluorescence studies gave Kd values of 0.34, 2.2, and 0.8 mImage for AMP, ADP, and ATP, which were close to the Ki values of 0.12, 2.2, and 0.9 mImage , respectively, for these nucleotides. The binding and inhibition studies with AMP and its analogs showed that the 6-amino group and the 5′-phosphate group were essential for the inhibition of the enzyme activity.

The diruthenium(III) complex [Ru2O(O2CAr)2(MeCN)4(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (1), on reaction with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in MeOH at 25-degrees-C, undergoes nucleophilic attacks at the carbon of two facial MeCN ligands to form [(Ru2O)-O-III(O2CAr)2-{NH2CH2CH2NHC(Me)NH}2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (2) (Ar = C6H4-p-X, X = H, Me, OMe, Cl) containing two seven-membered amino-amidine chelating ligands. The molecular structure of 2 with Ar = C6H4-p-OMe was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data are as follows: triclinic, P1BAR, a = 13.942 (5) angstrom, b = 14.528 (2) angstrom, c = 21.758 (6) angstrom, alpha = 109.50 (2)-degrees, beta = 92.52 (3)-degrees, gamma = 112.61 (2)-degrees, V = 3759 (2) angstrom 3, and Z = 2. The complex has an {Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CAr2)2(2+)} core. The Ru-Ru and average Ru-O(oxo) distances and the Ru-O-Ru angle are 3.280 (2) angstrom, 1.887 [8] angstrom, and 120.7 (4)-degrees, respectively. The amino group of the chelating ligand is trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The nucleophilic attacks take place on the MeCN ligands cis to the mu-oxo ligand. The visible spectra of 2 in CHCl3 display an absorption band at 565 nm. The H-1 NMR spectra of 2 in CDCl3 are indicative of the formation of an amino-amidine ligand. Complex 2 exhibits metal-centered quasireversible one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in the potential ranges +0.9 to +1.0 V and -0.3 to -0.5 V (vs SCE), respectively, involving the Ru(III)2/Ru(III)Ru(IV) and Ru(III)2/Ru(II)Ru(III) redox couples in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M TBAP. The mechanistic aspects of the nucleophilic reaction are discussed.

The free-base octabromotetraphenylporphyrin (H2OBP) has been prepared by a novel bromination reaction of (meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato)copper(II). The metal [V(IV)O, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), Ag(II), Pt(II)] derivatives exhibit interesting electronic spectral features and electrochemical redox properties. The electron-withdrawing bromine substituents at the pyrrole carbons in H2OBP and M(OBP) derivatives produce remarkable red shifts in the Soret (50 nm) and visible bands (100 nm) of the porphyrin. The low magnitude of protonation constants (pK3 = 2.6 and pK4 = 1.75) and the large red-shifted Soret and visible absorption bands make the octabromoporphyrin unique. The effect of electronegative bromine substituents at the peripheral positions of the porphyrin has been quantitatively analyzed by using the four-orbital approach of Gouterman. A comparison of MO parameters of MOBP derivatives with those of the meso-substituted tetraphenylporphyrin (M(TPP)) and unsubstituted porphine (M(P)) derivatives provides an explanation for the unusual spectral features. The configuration interaction matrix element of the M(OBP) derivatives is found to be the lowest among the known substituted porphyrins, indicating delocalization of ring charge caused by the increase in conjugation of p orbitals of the bromine onto the ring orbitals. The electron-transfer reactivities of the porphyrins have been dramatically altered by the peripheral bromine substituents, producing large anodic shifts in the ring and metal-centered redox potentials. The increase in anodic shift in the reduction potential of M(OBP)s relative to M(TPP)s is found to be large (550 mV) compared to the shift in the oxidation potential (300 mV). These shifts are interpreted in terms of the resonance and inductive interactions of the bromine substituents.

The low-lying singlets and triplets of biphenyl are obtained exactly within the PPP model using the diagrammatic valence bond method. The energy gaps within the singlet manifold as well as the lowest singlet-triplet gap are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The two weak absorptions between 4·1 and 4·2 eV reported experimentally are attributed to the two states lying below the optical gap that become weakly allowed on breaking electron-hole and inversion symmetries. The observed blue shift of the spectral lines, attributed to a change in dihedral angle, on going from crystalline to solution to vapour phase is also well reproduced within the PPP model. The bond orders show that the ground singlet state is benzenoidal while the dipole excited state as well as the lowest triplet state are quinonoidal and planar. Comparison with the experimental spin densities and the fine structure constants D and E in the triplet state point to slightly weaker correlations than assumed by the PPP model. The introduction of a 1-8 bond to mimic poly(paraphenylene)s gives an optical gap that is in good agreement with experiment.
