We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Nanoparticle deposition behavior observed at the Darcy scale represents an average of the processes occurring at the pore scale. Hence, the effect of various pore-scale parameters on nanoparticle deposition can be understood by studying nanoparticle transport at pore scale and upscaling the results to the Darcy scale. In this work, correlation equations for the deposition rate coefficients of nanoparticles in a cylindrical pore are developed as a function of nine pore-scale parameters: the pore radius, nanoparticle radius, mean flow velocity, solution ionic strength, viscosity, temperature, solution dielectric constant, and nanoparticle and collector surface potentials. Based on dominant processes, the pore space is divided into three different regions, namely, bulk, diffusion, and potential regions. Advection-diffusion equations for nanoparticle transport are prescribed for the bulk and diffusion regions, while the interaction between the diffusion and potential regions is included as a boundary condition. This interaction is modeled as a first-order reversible kinetic adsorption. The expressions for the mass transfer rate coefficients between the diffusion and the potential regions are derived in terms of the interaction energy profile. Among other effects, we account for nanoparticle-collector interaction forces on nanoparticle deposition. The resulting equations are solved numerically for a range of values of pore-scale parameters. The nanoparticle concentration profile obtained for the cylindrical pore is averaged over a moving averaging volume within the pore in order to get the 1-D concentration field. The latter is fitted to the 1-D advection-dispersion equation with an equilibrium or kinetic adsorption model to determine the values of the average deposition rate coefficients. In this study, pore-scale simulations are performed for three values of Peclet number, Pe = 0.05, 5, and 50. We find that under unfavorable conditions, the nanoparticle deposition at pore scale is best described by an equilibrium model at low Peclet numbers (Pe = 0.05) and by a kinetic model at high Peclet numbers (Pe = 50). But, at an intermediate Pe (e.g., near Pe = 5), both equilibrium and kinetic models fit the 1-D concentration field. Correlation equations for the pore-averaged nanoparticle deposition rate coefficients under unfavorable conditions are derived by performing a multiple-linear regression analysis between the estimated deposition rate coefficients for a single pore and various pore-scale parameters. The correlation equations, which follow a power law relation with nine pore-scale parameters, are found to be consistent with the column-scale and pore-scale experimental results, and qualitatively agree with the colloid filtration theory. These equations can be incorporated into pore network models to study the effect of pore-scale parameters on nanoparticle deposition at larger length scales such as Darcy scale.

The effect of the La3+ and Gd3+ co-doping on the structure, electric and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramics are investigated. For the compositions (x=0 and 0 <= y <= 0.15) in the perovskite structured LaxGdyBi1-xFeO3 system, a tiny residual phase of Bi2Fe4O9 is noticed. Such a secondary phase is suppressed with the incorporation of `La' content (x). The magnitude of dielectric constant (epsilon(r) increases progressively by increasing the `La' content from x=0 to 0.15 with a remarkable decrease of dielectric loss. For x=0.15, the system LaxGdyBi1-x(x+y)FeO3 exhibits highest remanent magnetization (M-r) of 0.18 emu/g and coercive magnetic field (H-c) of similar to 1 Tin the presence of external magnetic field of 9 T at 300 K. The origin of enhanced dielectric and magnetic properties of LaxGdyBil (x+y)Fe03 and the role of doping elements, La3+, Gd3+ has been discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. We have carried out dielectric and transport measurements in NdFe1-xMnxO3 (0 <= x <= 1) series of compounds and studied the variation of activation energy due to a change in Mn concentration. Despite similar ionic radii in Mn3+ and Fe3+, large variation is observed in the lattice parameters and a crossover from dynamic to static Jahn-Teller distortion is discernible. The Fe/Mn-O-Fe/Mn bond angle on the ab plane shows an anomalous change with doping. With an increase in the Mn content, the bond angle decreases until x = 0.6; beyond this, it starts rising until x = 0.8 and again falls after that. A similar trend is observed in activation energies estimated from both transport and dielectric relaxation by assuming a small polaron hopping (SPH) model. Impedance spectroscopy measurements delineate grain and grain boundary contributions separately both of which follow the SPH model. Frequency variation of the dielectric constant is in agreement with the modified Debye law from which relaxation dispersion is estimated.

GPR is widely used for ballast fouling identification, however, there are no robust guidelines to find the degree and type of fouling quantitatively. In this study, GPR studies were carried out on model and actual railway tracks using three ground coupled antennas and considering three fouling materials. Three ground coupled antennas viz., 100 MHz, 500 MHz and 800 MHz antennas were used for the initial survey and it was found that the 800 MHz ground coupled antenna is an optimum one to get quality results. Three major fouling materials viz., screened/broken ballast, coal and iron ore were used to construct prototype model sections, which were 1/2 of the actual Indian broad-gauge railway track. A separate model section has been created for each degree and type of fouling and GPR surveys were carried out. GPR study shows that increasing the fouling content results in a decrease in the Electromagnetic Wave (EMW) velocity and an increase in the dielectric constant. EMW velocity of ballast fouled with screened ballast was found to be more than coal fouled ballast and iron ore fouled ballast at any degree of fouling and EMW velocity of iron ore fouled ballast was found to be less than coal and screen ballast fouled ballast. Dielectric constant of iron ore fouled ballast was found to be higher than coal and screen ballast fouled ballast for all degrees of fouling. Average slope of the trend line of screen ballast fouled section is low (25.6 degrees), coal fouled ballast is medium (27.8 degrees) and iron ore fouled ballast is high (47.6 degrees). Polycrystalline films of SrBi2Nb2O9 were grown using pulsed-laser ablation. The ferroelectric properties were achieved by low-temperature deposition followed by a subsequent annealing process. The lower switching voltage was obtained by lowering the thickness, which did not affect the insulating nature of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (P-r=6 mu C/cm(2), E-c=100 kV/cm) in good agreement with earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 250 and a dissipation factor of 0.02. The transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge.

Antiferroelectric lead zirconate (PZ) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on platinum-coated silicon substrates. Films showed a polycrystalline pervoskite structure upon annealing at 650 degrees C for 5-10 min. Dielectric properties were investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The dielectric constant of PZ films was 220 at 100 kHz with a dissipation factor of 0.03. The electric field induced transformation from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase was observed through the polarization change, using a Sawyer-Tower circuit. The maximum polarization value obtained was 40 mu C/cm(2). The average fields to excite the ferroelectric state, and to reverse to the antiferroelectric state were 71 and 140 kV/cm, respectively. The field induced switching was also observed through double maxima in capacitance-voltage characteristics. Leakage current was studied in terms of current versus time and current versus voltage measurements. A leakage current density of 5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at 3 V, for a film of 0.7 mu m thickness, was noted at room temperature. The trap mechanism was investigated in detail in lead zirconate thin films based upon a space charge limited conduction mechanism. The films showed a backward switching time of less than 90 ns at room temperature.

Both diglycine sulphate (DGS) and diglycine sulphate monohydrate (DGS.H2O) are reported to crystallize from solution with pH < 1(1,2). DGS.H2O (point group 2/m; Z = 4) shows a dielectric anomaly at 72°C suggestive of antiferroelectric transition(1). The crystals obtained by us from solution with pH < 0.5 at 20-25°C were always DGS (point group mmm; Z = 8) as confirmed by X-ray studies. The measurement of its dielectric constant along [100], [010] and [001] did not indicate any phase transition in the range 5-400°K. Thus DGS is a normal dielectric unlike TGS. The polarized Raman spectra and the infrared spectra were recorded to examine the configuration of glycine in DGS(3). The vibration spectra reveals that both the glycines in DGS exist as NH3+CH2COOH, thus precluding the hydrogen bond of the type N+-H…O- which exists between two glycine units in TGS. This seems to be a good reason for the difference in the dielectric behaviour of these two glycine sulphates.

Magnetoplasmon-type surface polaritons are studied at the interfaces of sandwich structures in the configuration with a magnetic field oriented parallel to the interface but perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. It is shown that the propagation window for the surface polaritons is shifted to higher frequencies in the presence of the magnetic field directed positively. On reversal of the magnetic field an additional low frequency propagation band appears. Irrespective of the direction and strength of the magnetic field there exists a certain frequency range in which interface polaritons cannot propagate. For sandwich structures for which the dielectric constant and the plasma frequency of one medium are simultaneously greater or less than those of the second medium gaps and multiple branches can appear in the propagation window either for n > 0 or n <; 0 waves. A graphical method for the estimation of critical ranges of B0 and dielectric constant ratios for different sandwich structures, within which gaps and multiple branches appear, is given

Measurements of magnetic and dielectric properties of single crystalline ErMnO3 establish the Neel and ferroelectric transition temperatures to be 77 K and 588 K respectively. The dielectric constant of ErMnO3 shows an anomalous jump at T-N. At higher temperatures, the dielectric constant undergoes a significant decrease on application of magnetic fields. The study clearly exhibits multiferroic and magnetoelectric nature of ErMnO3.

The effect of solvent on chemical reactivity has generally been explained on the basis of the dielectric constant and viscosity. However a number of spectroscopic studies, including UV-VIS, IR and Raman, has led to numerous empirical parameters to define solvent effect based on either solvating ability or polarity scale. These parameters include solvent polarizability, dipolarity, Lewis acidity and Lewis basicity, E-T(30), pi*, alpha, beta etc. However, from a structural point of view, we can separate solvation as static and dynamic processes. The static solvation basically relates to stabilization of the molecular structure by the solvent to attain the equilibrium structure, both in the intermediate and ground state. Dynamic solvation relates to solvent reorganization-induced dynamics prior to the structural reorganization to reach the equilibrium state. In this paper, we present (a) structural distortions induced by the solvent due to preferential solvation of the triplet excited state, and (b) the importance of dynamic solvation induced by vibronic coupling (pseudo-Jahn-Teller coupling). The examples include the effect of solvent on structure and reactivity of excited states of 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone (TFA). Based on the comparison of time resolved resonance Raman (TR3) data of TFA and other substituted acetophenone systems, it was found that change in solvent polarity indeed results in electronic state switching and structural changes in the excited state, which explains the trend in reactivity. Further, a TR3 study of fluoranil (FA) in the triplet excited state in solvents of varying polarities indicates that the structure of FA in the triplet excited state is determined by vibronic coupling effects and thus distorted structure. These experimental results have been well supported by density functional theoretical computational studies.

Micromachined antennas are recieving great interest as carrier frequencies move higher into the frequency spectrum due to their superior performance and amenability for integration with active devices. However their design is cumbersome owing to the complexity of the structure. To overcome this, in this paper, an iterative procedure is suggested to facilitate fast design of micromachined patch antennas based on a simulation study. A microstrip line on a micromachined Silicon substrate is simulated in a full wave simulator by solving for the ports only. From the obtained propagation constant, the effective dilectric constant for the micromachined substrate is estimated. The process is repeated for a number of values of the width of the microstrip and a plot is made for the variation of the effective dielectric constant with the microstrip width. Then an iterative method in combination with the extrapolated permittivity which includes the effect of cavity extensions in all the directions, is used to obtain the width and the corresponding effective dielectric constant. This method has been verified to be quite accurate by comparison with full wave simulations and hence it can function as a good starting point for designers to design micromachined antennas.

Artificial superlattices of SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 were grown epitaxially with different periodicities on SrRuO3 coated (00 1) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed excimer laser ablation. Superlattices were structurally characterized by X-Ray theta-2 theta diffraction data. Electrical characterization was done in metal-insulation-metal configuration. Capacitance-voltage measurements showed limited amount of tunability. The DC field induced tunability has been observed to be sensitive to the periodicity of the superlattices, hence the effective strain present in the layers. Hysteretic behaviour in capacitance-voltage (C-V) and polarization versus electric field (P-E) results from the superlattices also indicate the sensitivity of the interfaces. Interfacial strain is supposed to be the most probable cause for such a behaviour which is also manifested in the variation of dielectric constant with individual layer thicknesses. The variations in the activities of the alkaline and acid phosphatases of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, were studied in all stages of the life cycle. From hatching until the spinning stage a steady increase was recorded in the activity of both the enzymes followed with a conspicuous decrease at each moult. During the pupal stage the alkaline phosphatase was almost absent, whereas the acid phosphatase maintained a high and constant value. Increase or decrease of the activity of the enzymes during larval development was reflected in a decrease or increase in the acid-soluble phosphorus content. Acid phosphatase activity slowly increased from laying of the eggs to hatching of the larvae with a concomitant decrease in the acid-soluble phosphorus. Tissue analysis showed a high concentration of the alkaline enzyme in the intestines, but the haemolymph was almost free of both enzymes. Feeding of inorganic phosphate increased the alkaline enzyme in the intestines, whereas glucose had no effect on either of the enzymes in the intestines.

The electronic absorption peak at around 2 eV of polyaniline (in the emeraldine base form) solution is found to be highly sensitive to the dielectric constant of the solvent, showing a bathochromic shift. An increase in electron density on the imine nitrogen of the polymer, on ‘2 eV’ excitation, has been concluded.
