Infrared spectra of trichloroacetates of Cu, Ca, Sr and Ba were studied in order to investigate the effect of coordination on the vibration spectra of the ligand. The shifts of the antisymmetric and symmetric COO- stretching frequencies are explained on the basis of the type of co-ordination of the COO- group to the metal ion. From the spectra it is established that the coordination of the COO- group to metal is different for trichloroacetates and monochloroacetates.

The Raman spectrum of strontium titanate has been recorded using λ 4358 of mercury as exciter. The observed spectrum consists of 7 Raman lines, one of which is of low frequency, as expected from the recent theory of Cochran. 6 of these Raman lines have been interpreted as the first order spectrum arising from a small deviation of the cubic strontium titanate from its idealized symmetry. It has been shown that one normal mode of SrTiO3 neglected by J.T. Last, will be really active in infrared absorption in the region of 440 cm-1 and that it has to be taken into account in the interpretation of the infrared spectra of titanates. The four vibrational modes of the unit cell of SrTiO3 correspond to frequencies of 90, 335, 441 and 620 cm-1 observed in Raman effect. The large width of the Raman lines and the additional lines at 256 cm-1 and 726 cm-1 have been attributed to a splitting of the longitudinal and transverse optical modes. With the observed frequencies it has been found possible to account for in a satisfactory manner the specific heat of SrTiO3 in the range 54·84° K to 1800° K.

Observations at a series of temperatures of the changes in viscosities and depolarization factors of 1% and 18% solutions of calcium stearate in cetane to which varying amounts of water have been added can be interpreted in terms of the existence of anisometric micelles. In general, changes in the size of the micelles inferred from values of ρh agree with those deduced from the viscosity data. The correlation between anisometry of micelles from rheological and optical observations is much poorer in the case of ρν, presumably because of the difficulty in differentiating the contribution of anisometry and anisotropy to ρν.

Using the pulse method in the range of 2 to 26Mc's the ultrasonic absorption, velocity and the adiabatic compressibility have been studied in eleven aqueous acetate solutions up to a concentration of 1 mole/litre. The substances studied are the acetates of lithium, sodium, potassium, ammonium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, cadmium and lead. Absorption in mercuric acetate has been studied only at 2 and 6 Mc/s. Two regions of relaxation are noticed, one below 10 Mc/s and the other between 10 and 26 Mc/s. The first relaxation is ascribed to the dissociation reaction of the salt and the second one to the monomerdimer reaction of the acetic acid formed by the hydrolysis of the salt in water.

Crystalline Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles have been achieved through a modified sol–gel process using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry (DSC/TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that well-dispersed 5–60 nm Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were prepared through heat-treating the precursor at 650 °C and the high density pellets were obtained at temperatures lower than those commonly employed. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the Bi5NbO10 solid solutions were investigated in the 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range. Two distinct relaxation mechanisms were observed in the plots of dielectric loss and the imaginary part of impedance (Z″) versus frequency in the temperature range of 200–350 °C. The dielectric constant and the loss in the low frequency regime were electrode dependent. The ionic conductivity of Bi5NbO10 solid solutions at 700 °C is 2.86 Ω−1 m−1 which is in same order of magnitude for Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 ceramics at same temperature. These results suggest that Bi5NbO10 is a promising material for an oxygen ion conductor.

Nanocrystalline perovskite barium titanate with an average particle size less than similar to 10 nm is produced using sol-gel route involving ligand-assisted templating. BaTiO3 is obtained by the controlled hydrolysis and condensation reaction of barium acetate (Ba(CH3COO)(2)) with titanium tetra chloride (TiCl4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine (DDA) which is used as the template. Our attempts to produce mesoporous BaTiO3 have resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline BaTiO3. The synthesis of nanostructured BaTiO3 is carried out using the ligand-assisted templating approach which proceeds through the sol-gel route. Dodecylamine is used as the template. The sol-gel process in general presents inherent advantages because the nanostructure of the desired materials can be controlled together with their porous structure. Ligand-assisted templating approach involves the formation of covalent bond between the inorganic analogue and the template. Ba(CH3COO)(2) and TiCl4 are used as barium-source and titanium-source respectively. The reaction between Ba(CH3COO)(2) and TiCl4 is found to take place deliberately on the pre-assembled species which acts as the template or occurring with in them which in turn will lead to the generation of the desired nanoscale structure (nanopores or nanoparticles).

The reversible chemical reaction of Ca(OH)2/CaO appears to be attractive for storage of solar thermal energy, in view of the nonpolluting and nontoxic nature of the reactants. This paper presents some data on thermal decomposition of calcium hydroxide pellets along with its additives of aluminum, aluminum hydroxide, zinc, and copper. The addition of aluminum and zinc powder enhanced the rate of decomposition considerably at 450°C, but copper had no effect. Considerations on the effect of additives are also discussed in some detail, though their effects are not established with certainty. There is some evidence that heat transfer into the pellet, and the number of potential nucleation sites due to thermal stresses, influence the kinetics and mechanism of decomposition.

Antiferroelectric lead zirconate thin films were deposited using KrF (248 nm) excimer laser ablation technique. Utilization of antiferroelectric materials is proposed in high charge storage capacitors and microelectromechanical (MEMs) devices. The antiferroelectric nature of lead zirconate thin films was confirmed by the presence of double hysteresis behavior in polarization versus applied field response. By controlling the processing parameters, two types of microstructures evolved, namely columnar (or in-situ) and multi-grained (or ex-situ) in PZ thin films. The dielectric and electrical properties of the lead zirconate thin films were studied with respect to the processing parameters. Analysis on charge transport mechanism, using space charge limited conduction phenomenon, showed the presence of both shallow and deep trap sites in the PZ thin films. The estimated shallow trap energies were 0.448 and 0.491 eV for in-situ and ex-situ films, with respective concentrations of approximate to 7.9 x 10(18)/cc and approximate to 2.97 x 10(18)/cc. The deep trap energies with concentrations were 1.83 eV with 1.4 x 10(16)/cc for ex-situ and 1.76 eV with 3.8 x 10(16)/cc for in-situ PZ thin films, respectively. These activation energies were found to be consistent with the analysis from Arrhenius plots of de current densities. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The deterioration of the mechanical properties of bone with age is related to several factors including the structure, organization and chemistry of the constituent phases; however, the relative contribution of each of these factors is not well understood. In this study, we have investigated the effect of chemistry (calcium deficiency) on the mechanical properties of single crystals of hydroxyapatite. Single crystals of stoichiometric crystals grown by the flux method and calcium-deficient platelet crystals grown using wet chemical methods were used as model systems. Using nanoindentation, we show that calcium deficiency leads to an 80% reduction in the hardness and elastic modulus and at least a 75% reduction in toughness in plate-shaped hydroxyapatite crystals. Measurement of local mechanical properties using nanoindentation and nanoscale chemistry through elemental mapping in a transmission electron microscope points to a direct correlation between the observed spatial variation in composition and the large scatter in the measured hardness and modulus values. Mitochondria isolated from the livers of rats administered with sodium meta-, ortho-, or polyvanadate, but not vanadyl sulphate, exhibited enhanced Ca2+ — stimulated respiration and uptake of calcium. These effects were shown also by mitochondria isolated from livers perfused with polyvanadate. The concentration of acid-soluble calcium decreased significantly in the mitochondrial fraction on vanadate treatment, while that in the cytosol showed a corresponding increase. Phenoxybenzamine, an antagonist to a-adrenergic receptors, effectively inhibited vanadate-induced Ca2+ mobilization, but surgical sympathectomy was without effect. This is the first demonstration of vanadate mimicking agr-adrenergic agonists in vivo.
