Gd2O3:Eu3+ (4 mol%) co-doped with Bi3+ (Bi = 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 mol%) ions were synthesized by a low-temperature solution combustion method. The powders were calcined at 800A degrees C and were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The PXRD profiles confirm that the calcined products were in monoclinic with little cubic phases. The particle sizes were estimated using Scherrer's method and Williamson-Hall plots and are found to be in the ranges 40-60 nm and 30-80 nm, respectively. The results are in good agreement with TEM results. The photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized phosphors excited with 230 nm show emission peaks at similar to 590, 612 and 625 nm, which are due to the transitions D-5(0)-> F-7(0), D-5(0)-> F-7(2) and D-5(0)-> F-7(3) of Eu3+, respectively. It is observed that a significant quenching of Eu3+ emission was observed under 230 nm excitation when Bi3+ was co-doped. On the other hand, upon 350 nm excitation, the luminescent intensity of Eu3+ ions was enhanced by incorporation of Bi3+ (5 mol%) ions. The introduction of Bi3+ ions broadened the excitation band of Eu3+ of which a new strong band occurred ranging from 320 to 380 nm. This has been attributed to the 6s(2)-> 6s6p transition of Bi3+ ions, implying a very efficient energy transfer from Bi3+ ions to Eu3+ ions. The gamma radiation response of Gd2O3:Eu3+ exhibited a dosimetrically useful glow peak at 380A degrees C. Using thermoluminescence glow peaks, the trap parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The observed emission characteristics and energy transfer indicate that Gd2O3:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphors have promising applications in solid-state lighting.

Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements were carried out on undoped and Mn2+ doped (0.1 mol%) yttrium aluminate (YAlO3) nanopowders using gamma irradiation in the dose range 1-5 kGy. These phosphors have been prepared at furnace temperatures as low as 400 degrees C by using the combustion route. Powder X-ray diffraction confirms the orthorhombic phase. SEM micrographs show that the powders are spherical in shape, porous with fused state and the size of the particles appeared to be in the range 50-150 nm. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies reveal that Mn ions occupy the yttrium site and the valency of manganese remains as Mn2+. The photoluminescence spectrum shows a typical orange-to-red emission at 595 nm and suggests that Mn2+ ions are in strong crystalline environment. It is observed that TL intensity increases with gamma dose in both undoped and Mn doped samples. Four shouldered TL peaks at 126, 240, 288 and 350 degrees C along with relatively resolved glow peak at 180 degrees C were observed in undoped sample. However, the Mn doped samples show a shouldered peak at 115 degrees C along with two well defined peaks at similar to 215 and 275 degrees C. It is observed that TL glow peaks were shifted in Mn doped samples. The kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b), frequency factor (s) of undoped, and Mn doped samples were determined at different gamma doses using the Chens glow peak shape method and the results are discussed in detail. Sr1-xMnxTiO3 (where x=0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09) was synthesized via different routes that include solid-state, oxalate precipitation and freeze drying. In oxalate precipitation technique, compositions corresponding to 3 and 5 mol% doping of Mn were monophasic whereas the higher compositions revealed the presence of the secondary phases such as MnO, Mn3O4 etc., as confirmed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The decomposition behavior of the precursors prepared using oxalate precipitation method corresponding to the above mentioned compositions was studied. Nanopowders of compositions pertaining to 5 to 9 mol% of Mn doping were obtained using freeze-drying technique. The average crystallite size of these nanopowders was found to be in the 35 to 65 nm range. The microstructural studies carried out on the sintered ceramics, fabricated using powders synthesized by different routes established the fine grained nature ( < 1 mu m) of the one obtained by freeze drying method. Raman scattering studies were carried out in order to complement the observations made from XRD regarding the phase purity. The dielectric properties of the ceramics obtained by different synthesis routes were studied in the 80-300 K temperature range at 100 kHz and the effect of grain size has been discussed. Sr2SbMnO6 (SSMO) ceramics were, fabricated using the nanocrystalline powders obtained via molten salt synthesis (MSS) method. High temperature X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the structural phase transition (room temperature tetragonal (I4/mcm) to the cubic phase (Pm-3m)) temperature to be around 736K. The discontinuity in the phase transition indicated its first order nature reflecting the presence of ferroelectric-like distortions in SSMO prepared from MSS which seemed to be unique as it was not observed so far in the case of SSMO prepared using solid-state reaction method. The dielectric behavior of SSMO was studied in the 300-950 K temperature range at high frequencies (MHz range) in order to suppress the of space charge and related effects that dominate at such higher temperatures and mask the real phase transition.
Photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene by using immobilized titania/silica on aluminum sheets
Resumo:
The aim of this study was to prepare a highly active immobilized titania/silica photocatalyst and to test its performance in situ toward degradation of toluene as one of the major toxic indoor contaminants. In this work, two different titania layers immobilized on Al sheets were synthesized via low temperature sol-gel method employing presynthesized highly active titania powders (Degussa P25 and Millennium PC500, mass ratio 1:1): (a) with a silica/titania binder and a protective layer and (b) without the binder. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The in situ photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene was selected as a probe reaction to test photocatalytic activity and to verify the potential application of these materials for air remediation. Results show that nontransparent highly photocatalytically active coatings based on the silica/titania binder and homogeneously dispersed TiO2 powders were obtained on the Al sheets. The crystalline structure of titania was not altered upon addition of the binder, which also prevented inhomogeneous agglomeration of particles on the photocatalyst surface. The photoactivity results indicate that the adsorption properties and photocatalytic activity of immobilized photocatalysts with the silica/titania binder and an underlying protective layer were very effective and additionally, they exhibited considerably improved adhesion and uniformity. We present a new highly photocatalytically active immobilized catalyst on a convenient metallic support, which has a potential application in an air cleaning device.

Polycrystalline powders of Ba1-xCaxBi4Ti4O15 (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering techniques have been employed to probe into the structural changes on changing x. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of monophasic bismuth layered structure of all the above compositions with an increase in orthorhombic distortion with increase in x. Raman spectra revealed a redshift in A(1g) peak and an increase in the B-2g/B-3g splitting with increasing Ca content. The average grain size was found to increase with increasing x. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T-m) increased linearly with increasing Ca-content whereas the diffuseness of the phase transition was found to decrease with the end member CaBi4Ti4O15 showing a frequency independent sharp phase transition around 1048 K. Ca doping resulted in a decrease in the remnant polarization and an increase in the coercive field. Ba0.75Ca0.25Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics showed an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of 15 pC N-1 at room temperature. Low values of dielectric losses and tunability of temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (tau(epsilon)) in the present solid-solution suggest that these compounds can be of potential use in microwave dielectrics at high temperatures. In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Electrodeposition of nickel/barium hexa-aluminate (Ni/BHA) composite coatings has been carried out from a Watt's bath on mild steel substrate. BHA powders with plate habit were synthesized by solution combustion synthesis followed by heat treatment to ensure complete conversion to the hexa-aluminate phase. Heat treated material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with X-ray analysis. The dispersion behaviour and stability of BHA suspensions with cationic and anionic surfactants at room temperature were studied by dynamic light scattering under different pH. The influence of BHA concentration in the electrolytic bath, deposition temperature, pH, current density and duty cycle on particle incorporation in the coatings were studied and conditions for maximum particle incorporation were established. Coatings with a roughness of about 0 center dot 4 mu m were produced by using this technique. Effect of BHA content on microhardness was also investigated. A reasonably good thickness of the coatings was achieved in a given set of conditions.

Undoped and co-doped (Ag, Co) ZnO powders were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method without using any capping agent. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the undoped and co-doped ZnO powders have pure hexagonal structure and are consisting of nanosized single-crystalline particles. The size of the nanoparticles increases with increasing Ag concentration from 1 to 5 mol% as compared to that of undoped ZnO. The presence of substitution dopants of Ag and Co in the ZnO host material was confirmed by the Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Optical absorption measurements indicate blue shift and red-shift in the absorption band edge upon doping concentration of Ag and blue emission was observed by photoluminescence (PL) studies.

In the present investigation, various kinds of textures were attained on the steel surfaces. Roughness of the textures was varied using different grits of emery papers or polishing powders. Pins made of pure Al, Al-4Mg alloy and pure Mg were then slid against prepared steel plate surfaces at various numbers of cycles using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. Tests were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2mms(-1) in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. Normal loads were increased up to 110N during the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness parameters of the plate were measured using an optical profilometer. In the experiments, it was observed that the coefficient of friction and formation of a transfer layer (under dry and lubricated conditions) only depended on surface texture during the first few sliding cycles. The steady-state variation in the coefficient of friction under both dry and lubrication conditions was attributed to the self-organisation of texture of the surfaces at the interface during sliding. The substrate effect on InN nanostructures grown by droplet epitaxy has been studied. InN nanostructures were fabricated on Si(111), silicon nitride/Si(111), AlN/Si(111) and Ge(100) substrates by droplet epitaxy using an RF plasma nitrogen source. The morphologies of InN nanostructures were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The chemical bonding configurations of InN nanostructures were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photoluminescence spectrum slightly blue shifted compared to the bulk InN, indicating a strong Burstein-Moss effect due to the presence of high electron concentration in the InN dots.

Fine powders of beta-Ga2O3 nanostructures were prepared via low temperature reflux condensation method by varying the pH value without using any surfactant. The pH value of reaction mixture had great influence on the morphology of final products. High crystalline single phase beta-Ga2O3 nanostructures were obtained by thermal treatment at 900 degrees C which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The morphological analysis revealed rod like nanostructures at lower and higher pH values of 6 and 10, while spindle like structures were obtained at pH = 8. The phase purity and presence of vibrational bands were identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optical absorbance spectrum showed intense absorption features in the UV spectral region. A broad blue emission peak centered at 441 nm due to donor-acceptor gallium-oxygen vacancy pair recombination appeared. The photocatalytic activity toward Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation was higher for nanorods at pH 10.

The nanocomposites of xTiO(2)+(1-x)Ni0.53Cu0.12Zn0.35Fe2O4 (where 0 <= x >= 1) were prepared using microwave hydrothermal (M H) method at 165 degrees C/45 min. The as-synthesized powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The particle size of the powder varies from 18 to 35 nm. The as prepared powders were densified at 500 degrees C/30 min using microwave sintering method. The sintered composites were characterized by XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bulk densities of the present composites were increasing with the addition of TiO2. The grain sizes of all the composite vary between 65 nm and 90 nm. The addition of TiO2 to ferrite increased the dielectric properties (epsilon' and epsilon `') also the resonant frequency of all the composites was found to be greater than 1 GHz. The imaginary part of permeability mu `' was found to increase with an increase of TiO2.

CrSi and Cr1-x Fe (x) Si particles embedded in a CrSi2 matrix have been prepared by hot pressing from CrSi1.9, CrSi2, and CrSi2.1 powders produced by ball milling using either WC or stainless steel milling media. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. The final crystallite size of CrSi2 obtained from the XRD patterns is about 40 and 80 nm for SS- and WC-milled powders, respectively, whereas the size of the second phase inclusions in the hot pressed samples is about 1-5 mu m. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and figure of merit (ZT) were analyzed in the temperature range from 300 to 800 K. While the ball-milling process results in a lower electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity due to the presence of the inclusions and the refinement of the matrix microstructure, respectively, the Seebeck coefficient is negatively affected by the formation of the inclusions which leads to a modest improvement of ZT.
