Niobium pentoxide thin films have been deposited on silicon and platinum-coated silicon substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering. The as-deposited films were amorphous and showed good electrical properties in terms of a dielectric permittivity of about 30, and leakage current density of 10(-6) A cm(-2) al a field of 120 kV cm(-1). A rapid thermal annealing process at 800 degrees C further increased the dielectric constant to 90 and increased the leakage current density to 5 x 10(-6) A cm(-2). The current-voltage characteristics observed at low and high fields suggested a combination of phenomena at different regimes of applied electric field. The capacitance-voltage characteristics performed in the metal-insulator-semiconductor configuration indicated good electronic interfaces with a nominal trap density of 4.5 x 10(12) cm(-2) eV(-1), which is consistent with the behavior observed with conventional dielectrics such as SiO2 on silicon surfaces.

Using the d=infinity or local-approximation approach to the half-filled Hubbard model on a compressible lattice, we present a detailed study of the transport and structural properties near the paramagnetic metal-insulator transition. The results describe qualitatively most of the observed data in V2O3, including the metal-insulator-metal crossover [Kuwamoto et al., Phys. Rev. B 22, 2626 (1980)]. In addition, we discuss an interesting and intrinsic reentrance feature in the resistivity of the half-filled Hubbard model at high temperatures.

A steel ball was slid on aluminium-silicon alloys at different temperatures. After the coefficient of friction had been measured, the surface shear stress was deconvoluted using a two-term model of friction. The ratio of surface shear stress to bulk hardness was calculated as a function of temperature, silicon content and alloying additions. These results are qualitatively similar to those recorded for pre-seizure specimens slid against an En24 disc in a pin-on-disc machine. This similarity, when viewed in the context of the phenomenon of bulk shear, provides a model for seizure of these alloys.

In this paper we have investigated the composition-driven metal-insulator (MI) transitions in two ABO3 classes of perovskite oxides (LaNixCo1-xO3 and NaxTayW1-yO3) in the composition range close to the critical region by using the tunneling technique. Two types of junctions (point-contact and planar) have been used for the investigation covering the temperature range 0.4 K

Two topical subjects related with the effect of magnetic field on electrical conduction and the metal-insulator transition are discussed. The first topic is an electronic phase transition in graphite, which is interpreted as a manifestation of a nestingtype instability inherent to a one-dimensional narrow Landau sub-band. The second topic is spin-dependent tranport in III-V based diluted magnetic semiconductors; in particular, a large negative magnetoresistance observed in the vicinity of metal-nonmetal transition.

All ‘undoped’ cuprates are antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. We argue that with doping they remain to be insulators including the ‘overdoped’ samples. Hence, there is no clear dividing line between non–metallic cuprates and high–temperature superconductors. Based on the generic Hamiltonian including the electron–phonon interaction and the direct Coulomb repulsion the ground state of doped cuprates is shown to be a charged 2e Bose liquid of small bipolarons. A theory of the normal state transport of copper oxides is developed. The temperature dependence of the resistivity and of the Hall effect agrees remarkably well with the experimental data in La2–xSrxCuO4 for the entire temperature regime including unusual ‘logarithmic’ low–temperature region. The violation of Kohler's rule in magnetoresistivity is explained. The resistive and thermodynamic superconducting transitions in a magnetic field are quantitatively described.

We have studied the metal-insulator transition at integer fillings in a triply degenerate Hubbard model using the Lanczos method. The critical Coulomb interaction strength U-c, is found to depend strongly on the band filling, with U-c similar to root 3 W (W is the bandwidth) at half filling for this case with threefold degeneracy. We discuss the implications of our results on metal-insulator transitions in strongly correlated systems in general, and on the unusual electronic ground state of the alkali-metal-doped fullerenes, in particular. This paper is aimed at investigating the acoustic emission activities during indentation toughness tests on an alumina based wear resistant ceramic and 25 wt% silicon carbide whisker (SIC,) reinforced alumina composite. It has been shown that the emitted acoustic emission signals characterize the crack growth during loading. and unloading cycles in an indentation test. The acoustic emission results indicate that in the case of the composite the amount of crack growth during unloading is higher than that of loading, while the reverse is true in case of the wear resistant ceramics. Acoustic emission activity observed in wear resistant ceramic is less than that in the case of composite. An attempt has been made to correlate the acoustic emission signals with crack growth during indentation test.

Nanoindentation tests were carried out at different locations in a Ti rich NiTi film deposited on a 3 `' silicon wafer by dc magnetron sputtering. The purpose of doing nanoindentation at different locations was to check the uniformity of the sample with respect to its mechanical behaviour and shape memory effect. The results showed that elastic modulus and hardness measured by nanoindentation was similar at different locations in the 3 `' wafer. Nanoindcntation coupled with depth profiling of residual indents using AFM also showed that the extent of shape memory recovery obtained by heating the film above its martensite to austcnite phase transformation temperature was also similar at different locations in the 3 `' wafer. However, the measured recovery ratio was lower than that predicted from theoretical calculations for indents made using Berkovich indenter. The results showed that the deposition process resulted in a NiTi film with uniform composition, mechanical properties and shape memory behaviour.

We have performed density functional calculations on tetragonal SnO and PbO (litharge) in the space group P4/nmm with the specific intention of examining the role played by Sn 5s and Pb 6s lone pairs in stabilizing the structure, and in giving rise to semi-metallic behavior (of SnO at ambient pressure and of PbO in the gamma phase). Use of the electron localization function has permitted real-space visualization of the lone pair in these structures. We also discuss the electronic structure of the orthorhombic PbO (massicot, space group Pbma) which again has localized lone pairs, contrary to some earlier expectation. A microchip thermocycler, fabricated from silicon and Pyrex #7740 glass, is described. Usual resistive heating has been replaced by induction heating, leading to much simpler fabrication steps. Heating and cooling rates of 6.5 and 4.2 degreesC/s, respectively have been achieved, by optimising the heater dimensions and heating frequency (similar to200 kHz). Four devices are mounted on a heater, resulting in low power consumption (similar to 1.4 W per device on the average). Using simple on-off electronic temperature control, a temperature stability within -0.2 degreesC is achieved. Features such as induction heating, good temperature control, battery operation, and low power consumption make the device suitable for portable applications, particularly in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) systems. Tracer diffusion coefficients are calculated in different phases in the Mo-Si system from diffusion couple experiments using the data available on thermodynamic parameters. Following, possible atomic diffusion mechanism of the species is discussed based on the crystal structure. Unusual diffusion behaviour is found in the Mo(5)Si(3) and Mo(3)Si phases, which indicate the nature of defects present on different sublattices. Further the growth mechanism of the phases is discussed and morphological evolution during interdiffusion is explained. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The oxygen content of La0.5Ca0.5MnOy was tuned by annealing the samples at high temperatures in flowing nitrogen with graphite powder nearby. The reduction of oxygen content has dramatic effect on the electrical transport and magnetic properties. The samples with y=2.983, 2.83, and 2.803 show an insulator-metal transition, and an unusual temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetoresistance. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition also shifts to lower temperatures and the antiferromagnetic transition at lower temperature is suppressed. The results are discussed in terms of the effect of oxygen vacancies on the various properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnOy. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

We have investigated the microstructure of thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition using a beta-diketonate complex of cobalt, namely cobalt (11) acetylacetonate. Films were deposited on three different substrates: Si(100), thermally oxidised silicon [SiO2/Si(100)] and glass at the same time. As-grown films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, atomic force microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Electrical resistivity was measured for all the films as a function of temperature. We found that films have very fine grains, resulting in high electrical resistivity Further, film microstructure has a strong dependence on the nature of the substrate and there is diffusion of silicon and oxygen into cobalt from the substrate. Formation of silicon carbide in the Acheson process was studied using a mass transfer model which has been developed in this study. The century old Acheson process is still used for the mass production of silicon carbide. A heat resistance furnace is used in the Acheson process which uses sand and petroleum coke as major raw materials.: It is a highly energy intensive process. No mass transfer model is available for this process. Therefore, a mass transfer model has been developed to study the mass transfer aspects of the process along with heat transfer. The reaction kinetics of silicon carbide formation has been taken from the literature. It has been shown that reaction kinetics has a reasonable influence on the process efficiency. The effect of various parameters on the process such as total gas pressure, presence of silicon carbide in the initial charge, etc. has been studied. A graphical user interface has also been developed for the Acheson process to make the computer code user friendly.
