Seizure resistance of several cast aluminium base alloys has been examined using a standard Hohman Wear Tester. Disks of aluminium base alloys were run against a standard aluminium 12% silicon base alloy. The seizure resistance of the alloys (as measured by the lowest bearing parameter reached before seizure) increased with hardness, yield and tensile strength. In Al-Si-Ni alloys where silicon and nickel have little solid solubility in α-aluminium and Si and Ni Al3 hard phases are formed, the minimum bearing parameter decreased with the parameter V (The product of vol. % of hard phases in the disk and the shoe). Apparently the silicon and NiAl3 particles provided discontinuities in the matrix and reduced the probability (1 − V) of the α-aluminium phase in the disk coming into contact with the α-aluminium phase in the shoe. The copper and magnesium containing Al-Si-Ni alloys with lesser volumes of hard phases exhibit considerably better seizure resistance indicating that a slight increase in the solute content or the hardness of the primary α-phase leads to a considerable increase in seizure resistance. Deformation during wear and seizure leads to fragmentation of the original hard particles into considerably smaller particles uniformly dispersed in the deformed α-aluminium matrix.

The crystalline mung bean nucleotide pyrophosphatase was inhibited nonlinearly by AMP, one of the products of the reaction. The partially inactive enzyme was specifically reactivated by ADP, and V at maximal activation was the same as that of the native enzyme. ATP was a linear, noncompetitive inhibitor. The kinetic evidence suggested that ADP and ATP might not be reacting at the same site as AMP. The electrophoretic mobility of the enzyme was increased by AMP, whereas ADP and ATP were without effect. The enzyme was denatured on treatment with urea or guanidine hydrochloride. The renatured and the native enzyme had the same pH (9.4) and temperature (49 °C) optimum. The Km (0.2 m ) and V (3.2) of the native enzyme increased on renaturation to 1.8 m and 8.0, respectively. In addition, renaturation resulted in desensitization of the enzyme to inhibition by low concentrations of AMP. Renaturation did not affect the reactivation of the apoenzyme by Zn2+.

The antifungal drug, miconazole nitrate, inhibits the growth of several species of Candida. Candida albicans, one of the pathogenic species, was totally inhibited at a concentration of approximately 10 μg/ml. Endogenous respiration was unaffected by the drug at a concentration as high as 100 μg/ml, whereas exogenous respiration was markedly sensitive and inhibited to an extent of 85%. The permeability of the cell membrane was changed as evidenced by the leakage of 260-nm absorbing materials, amino acids, proteins, and inorganic cations. The results we present clearly show that the drug alters the cellular permeability, and thus the exogenous respiration becomes sensitive to the drug.

Administration of rabbit antiserum to ovine luteinizing hormone to immature hamsters and guinea-pigs resulted in a significant decrease in the weights of testes, seminal vesicle and ventral prostate. The small signal ac response is measured across the source-drain terminals of poly(2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) field-effect transistor under dc bias to obtain the equivalent circuit parameters in the dark, and under a monochromatic light (540 nm) of various intensities. The numerically simulated response based on these parameters shows deviation at low frequency which is related to the charge accumulation at the interface and the contact resistance at the electrodes. This method can be used to differentiate the photophysical phenomena occurring in the bulk from that at the metal-semiconductor interface for polymer field-effect transistors. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

The effect of age of the larvae on the manifestation of the "Sappe" disease of the silkworm by oral inoculation of different pathogens, viz., Aerobacter cloacae, Pseudomonas boreopolis, Escherichia freundii, Achromobacter delmarvae, A. Superficialis, Pseudomonas ovalis, and Staphylococcus albus was tested. It was found that the reaction of the larva to the pathogen was influenced by its age. Some, e.g., Escherichia freundii, were more lethal when introduced at early stages whereas certain others, e.g., Aerobacter cloacae and Staphylococcus albus, caused maximum damage when invading older larvae. Irrespective of the age of infection, death of the worms mainly occurred during molting and before spinning. The studies also indicated that growth and mortality of the larvae were affected differentially by the pathogens.

Experimental results on the effect of energy deposition using an electric arc discharge, upstream of a 60° half angle blunt cone configuration in a hypersonic flow is reported.Investigations involving drag measurements and high speed schlieren flow visualization have been carried out in hypersonic shock tunnel using air and argon as the test gases; and an unsteady drag reduction of about 50% (maximum reduction) has been observed in the energy deposition experiments done in argon environment. These studies also show that the effect of discharge on the flow field is more pronounced in argon environment as compared to air, which confirms that thermal effects are mainly responsible for flow alteration in presence of the discharge.

We present low-frequency electrical resistance fluctuations, or noise, in graphene-based field-effect devices with varying number of layers. In single-layer devices, the noise magnitude decreases with increasing carrier density, which behaved oppositely in the devices with two or larger number of layers accompanied by a suppression in noise magnitude by more than two orders in the latter case. This behavior can be explained from the influence of external electric field on graphene band structure, and provides a simple transport-based route to isolate single-layer graphene devices from those with multiple layers. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

Administration of human chorionic gonadotropin to pregnant bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) at 55-60 days and 130-140 days of pregnancy resulted in a significant increase in serum progesterone levels. This effect could be observed even in lutectomized monkeys.However, no significant change in the serum estrogen level was noticed. These results suggest that although no chorionic gonadotropin is detectable in the serum after 35 days of pregnancy, the foetoplacental steroidogenic system is still responsive to exogenous gonadotropic stimulation.

Chromomycin A3 (250 mug/kg) suppressed the humoral immune response in rats against sheep erythrocytes when administered 48 h or later after antigenic stimulus. The antibiotic at this dose enhanced immunity when given along with or before antigen administration. The natural heterohemagglutinin levels in rabbits and guinea pigs were not affected by the antibiotic (10 mug/kg per day x 7).

"Strong" excitants of central neurones such as β N-oxalyl L α,β-diaminopropionic acid (ODAP), N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and kainic acid (KA) were found to inhibit the high affinity uptake of glutamate and aspartate in synaptosomes isolated from young rat brain. The potency of these "strong" excitants as convulsants appear to parallel their ability to inhibit glutamate uptake by synaptosomes. The data suggest the possibility that the convulsive effect of these "strong" excitants could be mediated by glutamate/aspartate.
