The reactions of [MCl2(cod)](M = Pd or Pt, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) with RN[P(OPh)2]2[R = Me (L1) or Ph (L2)] afford the chelate complexes [MCl2L1] and [MCl2L2]. The dinuclear palladium(O) complex, [Pd2L13] has been synthesized by starting from [Pd2(dba)3](dba = dibenzylideneacetone). Redox condensation of [Pd2(dba)3] and [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in the presence of the diphosphazane ligands gives the dinuclear palladium(I) complexes [Pd2Cl2L12] and [Pd2Cl2L22]. The structures of the complexes have been deduced from 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopic data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm the structures of [Pd2L13] and [Pd2Cl2L22].

The preparation of five different copper(I) complexes [CuSC(=NPh)(OAr)}L(n)]m (1-5) formed by the insertion of PhNCS into the Cu-OAr bond and the crystal structure analyses of three of them have been carried out. A monomeric species 1 (OAr = 2,6-dimethylphenoxide) is formed in the presence of excess PPh3 (n = 2, m = 1) and crystallizes as triclinic crystals with a = 12.419(4) angstrom, b = 13.298(7) angstrom, c = 15.936(3) angstrom, alpha = 67.09(3)-degrees, beta = 81.63(2)-degrees, gamma = 66.54(3)-degrees, V = 2224(2) angstrom3, and Z = 2. The structure was refined by the least-squares method to final R and R(w) values of 0.038 and 0.044, respectively, for 7186 unique reflections. Copper(I) 2,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of a dimeric species 2 in the presence of P(OMe)3 (n = 1, m = 2), where the coordination around Cu is trigonal. Crystals of 2 were found to be orthorhombic with a = 15.691(2) angstrom, b = 18.216(3) angstrom, c = 39.198(5) angstrom, v = 11204(3) angstrom3, and Z = 8. Least-squares refinement gave final residuals of R = 0.05 and R(w) = 0.057 with 6866 unique reflections. A tetrameric species 3 results when PPh3 is replaced by P(OMe)3 in the coordination sphere of copper(I) 2,6-dimethylphenoxide. It crystallizes in the space group P1BAR with a = 11.681 (1) angstrom, b = 13.373(2) angstrom, c = 20.127(1) angstrom, a = 88.55(l)-degrees, beta = 89.65(l)-degrees, gamma = 69.28(1)-degrees, V = 2940(l) angstrom3, and Z = 2. Least-squares refinement of the structure gave final values of 0.043 and 0.05 for R and R(w) respectively using 12214 unique reflections. In addition, a dimeric species 4 is formed when 1 equiv of PPh3 is added to the copper(I) 4-methylphenoxide, while with an excess of PPh3 a monomeric species 5 is isolated. Some interconversions among these complexes are also reported.

Cobalt(II) complexes of terpyridine bases Co(L)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1-3), where L is 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (ph-tpy in 1), 4'-(9-anthracenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (an-tpy in 2) and 4'-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (py-tpy in 3), are prepared and their photo-induced DNA and protein cleavage activity and photocytotoxic property in HeLa cells studied. The 1 : 2 electrolytic and three-electron paramagnetic complexes show a visible band near 550 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes 1-3 show emission spectral bands at 355, 421 and 454 nm, respectively, when excited at 287, 368 and 335 nm. The quantum yield values for 1-3 in DMF-H2O (2 : 1 v/v) are 0.025, 0.060 and 0.28, respectively. The complexes are redox active in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The Co(III)-Co(II) and Co(II)-Co(I) couples appear as quasi-reversible cyclic voltammetric responses near 0.2 and -0.7 V vs. SCE, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b value of similar to 10(6) M-1. The complexes show chemical nuclease activity. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit oxidative cleavage of pUC19 DNA in UV-A and visible light. The DNA photocleavage reaction of 3 at 365 nm shows formation of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical species, while only hydroxyl radical formation is evidenced in visible light. Complexes 2 and 3 show non-specific photo-induced bovine serum albumin protein cleavage activity at 365 nm. The an-tpy and py-tpy complexes exhibit significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells on exposure to visible light giving IC50 values of 24.2 and 7.6 mu M, respectively. Live cell imaging study shows accumulation of the complexes in the cytosol of HeLa cancer cells.

The Cu atoms in aquabis(tert-butyl acetoacetato)copper(II),[Cu(C8H13O3)(2)(H2O)], and bis(dipivaloylmethanido)copper(II), [Cu(C11H19O2)(2)], adopt square-pyramidal and planar conformations, respectively, with average Cu--O distances of 1.933 Angstrom in the former (not including the water ligand) and 1.892 Angstrom in the latter. It is interesting to note that the lability of the tert-butyl and methyl groups in both structures, which renders even the location of the terminal C atoms difficult, is reduced at T = 130 K, enabling location of all the protons in the difference Fourier map.

Three new complexes of Cu(I) have been synthesized using ancillary ligands like thiopyrimidine (tp) a modified nucleobase, and nicotinamide (nie) or vitamin B3, and characterized by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. In vitro cytotoxicity studies of the complexes on various human cancer cell lines such as Colo295, H226, HOP62, K562, MCF7 and T24 show that Cu(PPh3)(2)(tp)Cl] and Cu(PPh3)(2)(tp)ClO4 (2) have in vitro cytotoxicity comparable to cisplatin. Complex Cu(nic)(3)PPh3]ClO4 (3) is non-toxic and increases the life span by about 55 % in spontaneous breast tumor model. DNA binding and cleavage studies show that complex (3) binds to calf thymus DNA with an apparent binding constant of 5.9 x 10(5)M and completely cleaves super-coiled DNA at a concentration of 400 mu M, whereas complexes (1) and (2) do not bind DNA and do not show any cleavage even at 1200 mu M. Thus, complex (3) may exhibit cytotoxicity Via DNA cleavage whereas the mechanism of cytotoxicity of (1) and (2) probably involves a different pathway.

The linear quadridentate ligand N,N'-bis(benzimidazoI-2-ylethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine (L') and its 1 - methylbenzimidazole analogue (L2) and homologues form 1 : 1 complexes with Cu(CIO,),; L' also forms complexes of the types CuL'X, where X = NO,, PF,, Br or CI and CuL'(X)Y where X = CI or Br and Y = CIO, or Br. Deep blue CuL1Br,*2H20 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4, a = 9.91 9(2), b = 16.626(3), c = 14.1 02(3) le\ and p = 94.39(2)". The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier difference methods and refined by the least-squares technique to R = 0.064 for 2195 independent reflections with / > 1.50(/). The molecule lies on a two-fold axis symmetrically around Cu". The co-ordination around Cu" is found to be square planar with two amino nitrogens and two benzimidazole nitrogens forming the equatorial plane [CU-N 1.983(3) and 2.037(4) A]. The bromides are at longer distances [3.349(1) A] in axial sites. Ligand field and EPR spectra indicate that one bromide or chloride ion is axially co-ordinated to Cu" in [CuL1l2+. This ion exhibits quasi-reversible redox behaviour. Electrochemical studies of the dihalides in methanol have established the presence of [CuL'X,], [CuL'(X)]+ and [CuL'I2+ in equilibrium. In complexes with 565 [CuL4I2+ [L4 = N,Nbis( benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine] and 555 [CuL3] [L3 = N,N'-bis(1 -methylbenzimidazol- 2-ylmethyl)propane-l,3-diamine] chelate rings, Cull does not seem to lie in the N, square plane, as revealed by their low A values and irreversible electrochemical behaviour. The Cu"-Cu' redox potentials in methanol are in the order [CuL1I2+ < [CuL3I2+ < [CuL4I2+; this illustrates that sixmembered chelate rings are suitable to stabilize Cu", when CU-N 0 interactions are favourable.

The ternary metal deoxyribonucleotide complex [Cu(bzim)(5?-dGMP)(H2O)3](bzim = benzimidazole, 5?-dGMP = 2?-deoxyguanosine 5?-monophosphate) has been prepared and the structure analysed by X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the space group P1 with a= 7.069(6), b= 13.959(10), c= 14.204(12)Å, ?= 75.12(6), ?= 94.15(6), ?= 97.98(6)° and Z= 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures on the basis of 2813 observed [I[gt-or-equal] 3?(I)] reflections to final R and R? values of 0.050 and 0.052 respectively. There are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit and both copper(II) centres have square-pyramidal co-ordination geometry. An unusual feature of the structure is the co-ordination of the metal by N(7) of the base, in the presence of a ?-aromatic amine, bzim. The structure is stabilized by intermolecular basebzim stacking. The nucleotides of both the molecules have an anti conformation about the glycosyl bond, and a gauche-gauche conformation about the C(4?)C(5?) bond. A feature of particular interest is the unusual sugar conformation. The base furanose rings of the two nucleotide molecules adopt C(3?)-exo/C(2?)-endo pucker and C(3?)-exo pucker respectively.

Five coordination compounds Zn(mbmpbi)(2)Cl-2 (1), Zn(mbmpbi)(2)Br-2 (2), Cd(mbmpbi)(2)Cl-2 (3), Hg(mbmpbi)(2)Cl-2 (4) and Hg(mbmpbi)(2)Br-2 (5) were synthesized by the reaction of 1-(p-methoxybenzyl)-2-(p-methoxyphenyl)benzimidazole (mbmpbi) with the corresponding metal halides. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, conductance measurements, FT-IR, H-1 NMR and photoluminescence spectral studies. The ligand mbmpbi exhibits the N-benzimidazole coordination. The structures of 3-5 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. These three complexes are isostructural, crystallizing in the monoclinic system. P2/n space group with a distorted tetrahedral geometry around the metal ion. Metallo-beta-lactamases (m beta l) and phosphotriesterase (PTE) are zinc(II) enzymes, which hydrolyze the beta-lactam antibiotics and toxic organophosphotriesters, respectively. In the present work, we have synthesized a few asymmetric phenolate-based ligands by sequential Mannich reaction and their corresponding zinc(II) complexes. These zinc(II) complexes were studied for their m beta l and PTE activities. It is shown that the zinc(II) complexes can hydrolyze oxacillin, the beta-lactam antibiotic, at much higher rates as compared to the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl diphenylphosphate (PNPDPP), the phosphotriester. Among the complexes studied, the binuclear asymmetric complex 1 having a water molecule coordinated to one of the zinc(II) ions exhibits much better mbl activity than the mononuclear complexes. However, the mononuclear zinc(II) complexes having labile chloride ions exhibit significant PTE activity, which can be ascribed to the replacement of chloride ions by hydroxide ions during hydrolysis reactions. A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

A series of binuclear Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were synthesized by the template condensation of glyoxal, biacetyl or benzil bis-hydrazide, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and Co(11), Ni(II) or Cu(II) chloride in a 2:2:2 M ratio in ethanol. These 22-membered macrocyclic complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic, molar conductance, spectral, thermal and fluorescence studies. Elemental analyses suggest the complexes have a 2:1 stoichiometry of the type (M2LX2]center dot nH(2)O and Ni(2)LX(2)2H(2)O]center dot nH(2)O (where M = Co(II) and Cu(II); L = H2L1, H2L2 and H2L3; X = Cl; n = 2). From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies, it has been concluded that the Co(11) and Cu(11) complexes display a five coordinated square pyramidal geometry and the Ni(II) complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff bases and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the MIC method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Oligomeric copper(I) clusters are formed by the insertion reaction of copper(I) aryloxides into heterocumulenes. The effect of varying the steric demands of the heterocumulene and the aryloxy group on the nuclearity of the oligomers formed has been probed. Reactions with copper(I)2-methoxyphenoxide and copper(I)2-methylphenoxide with PhNCS result in the formation of hexameric complexes hexakis[N-phenylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato copper(I)] 3 and 4 respectively. Single crystal X-ray data confirmed the structure of 3. Similar insertion reactions of CS2 with the copper(I) aryloxides formed by 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and 2,6-dimethylphenol result in oligomeric copper(I) complexes 7 and 8 having the (aryloxy)thioxanthate ligand. Complex 7 was confirmed to be a tetramer from single crystal X-ray crystallography. Reactions carried out with 2-mercaptopyrimidine, which has ligating properties similar to N-alkylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolate, result in the formation of an insoluble polymeric complex 11. The fluorescence spectra of oligomeric complexes are helpful in determining their nuclearity. Ir has been shown that a decrease in the steric requirements of either the heterocumulene or aryloxy parts of the ligand can compensate for steric constraints acid facilitate oligomerization. The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.

This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and studies of dendrimers possessing an amino acid-metal complex as the core. Using Frechet-type polyaryl ether dendrons, L-tyrosine-metal (Zn-II and Co-II) complex cored dendrimers of 0-4 generations were synthesized. The metal complexation of the tyrosine unit at the focal point of these dendrons took place smoothly, in excellent yields, even though the sizes of the dendrons increase as the generations advance. Spectrophotometric titrations with CoII metal ion confirmed the formation of a 2 : 1 dendritic ligand to metal complex and the existence of a pseudotetrahedral geometry at the metal centre is also inferred. Cyclic voltammetric studies of dendrimer-Co-II complexes showed that while the electron transfer of Co-II to Co-I was facile for generations 0-2, such a process was difficult with generations 3 and 4, indicating a rigid encapsulation of the metal ion centre by proximal dendron groups. Further reduction of Co-I to Co-0 and the corresponding oxidation processes appear to be limited by adsorption at the surfaces of the electrodes.

A copper(II) complex containing a NSO-donor Schiff base and NN-donor 2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared and structurally characterized. The square pyramidal complex with an axial sulfur ligation is a structural model for the CUB site of dopamine-hydroxylase in its oxidized form. The copper(II) complex is catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid by dioxygen mediated by a copper(I) species which is proposed to have a four-coordinate structure with a N3S coordination geometry.
