A generalized analysis, using the Vander Lugt operational notation, of the building block optical system comprising a single holographic optical element (HOE) for achieving simultaneous display of the spectrum and the image of an object in a single plane, has been carried out. The salient features of this analysis are: (1) it allows comprehensive characterization of the HOE, (2) it provides insights into the many possible configurations for the system, and (3) it explains the existing results in a consistent manner.

Abstract. NHn+.C2H3NzO4, Mr= 137.1, triclinic, Pi, a=3-952(1), b=6.772(1), c=9.993(1)A, a= 98.06 (1), fl= 89.96 (1), ~= 106.96 (1) °. V=253.06 A 3, z = 2, 2(Cu Ka) = 1.5418 A, g =15.29 cm -~, D m = 1.805, D x = 1.798 g cm -3, F(000)= 144, T= 293 K, R = 0.048 for 795 observed reflections. The unit cell contains two independent centrosymmetric molecules, one centred at (0,0,0) and the other at (0.5, 0.0, 0.5). The presence of experimentally determined~N-H groups and the -C=O bond lengths of 1.248 (4) and 1.247 (4)A indicate that the compound exists in the oxamic rather than the oximic form. Only one hydroxyl hydrogen is associated with each molecule. They are located at centres of inversion (0,0.5,0 and 0,0.5,0.5) and are shared between symmetry-related molecules via short symmetric H bonds with O...O=2.454(4), 2.457(4) and all O-H = 1.23 A

An expression for the spectrum and cross spectrum of an acoustic field measured at two vertically separated sensors in shallow water has been obtained for any correlated noise sources distributed over the surface. Numerical results are presented for the case where the noise sources, white noise and wind-induced colored noise, are contained within a circular disk centered over the sensors. The acoustic field is generally inhomogeneous except when the channel is deep. The coherence function becomes real for a large disk, for a radius greater than 25 times the depth of the channel, decreases with further increase of the size of the disk, and finally tapers off after certain limiting size, approximately given by 1/alpha, where alpha is the attenuation coefficient.

An ammonia loop heat pipe (LHP) with a flat plate evaporator is developed and tested. The device uses a nickel wick encased in an aluminum-stainless steel casing. The loop is tested for various heat loads and different sink temperatures, and it demonstrated reliable startup characteristics. Results with the analysis of the experimental observation indicate that the conductance between the compensation chamber and the heater plate can significantly influence the operating temperatures of the LHP. A mathematical model is also presented which is validated against the experimental observations.

A user friendly interactive computer program, CIRDIC, is developed which calculates the molar ellipticity and molar circular dichroic absorption coefficients from the CD spectrum. This, in combination with LOTUS 1-2-3 spread sheet, will give the spectra of above parameters vs wavelength. The code is implemented in MicroSoft FORTRAN 77 which runs on any IBM compatible PC under MSDOS environment.

The vacuum ultraviolet circular dichroism spectrum of an isolated 4 → 1 hydrogen bonded β-turn is reported. The observed spectrum of N-acetyl-Pro-Gly-Leu-OH at − 40°C in trifluoroethanol is in good agreement with the theoretically calculated CD spectrum of the β-turn conformation. This spectrum, particularly the presence of a strong negative band around 180 nm and a large ratio [θ]201/[θ]225, can be taken as a characteristic feature of the isolated β-turn conformation. These CD spectral features can thus be used to distinguish the β-turn conformation from the β-structure in solution.

This paper presents an optimization algorithm for an ammonia reactor based on a regression model relating the yield to several parameters, control inputs and disturbances. This model is derived from the data generated by hybrid simulation of the steady-state equations describing the reactor behaviour. The simplicity of the optimization program along with its ability to take into account constraints on flow variables make it best suited in supervisory control applications.

Dehydrogenation of ammonia borane was carried out in fluor alcohol solvent in order to obtain compounds that are more likely candidates suitable for regeneration. Even though ammonia borane undergoes self-dissociation in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol to liberate H-2, decent hydrogen release rates were obtained by using Co-Co2B, Ni-Ni3B, and Co-Ni-B nanocomposites as catalysts. These catalysts are magnetic in nature and hence can be separated from the reaction mixture using a magnet for re-use. The final by-product NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) obtained after the catalytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane was thoroughly characterized using H-1, B-11, and C-13 NMR and IR spectroscopies. The FTIR data showed that the B-O bond in NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) is slightly weaker compared to boric acid. Preliminary investigations on the regenerative routes for ammonia borane from the by-product NH4+ B(OCH2CF3)(4)(-) showed indications of the formation of BNHx species. (C) 2010 Professor T. In this paper a new method is presented for generating earthquake accelerograms which have pre-established response spectra. The non-stationary random nature and other salient features of the accelerograms can be taken care of by the procedure developed. The method leads to a sample spectrum which lies above the given spectrum. The generation of records to suit several spectra simultaneously can also be handled by this approach. The method is detailed first. This is followed by several numerical examples.

The simple two dimensional C-13-satellite J/D-resolved experiments have been proposed for the visualization of enantiomers, extraction of homo- and hetero-nuclear residual dipolar couplings and also H-1 chemical shift differences between the enantiomers in the anisotropic medium. The significant advantages of the techniques are in the determination of scalar couplings of bigger organic molecules. The scalar couplings specific to a second abundant spin such as F-19 can be selectively extracted from the severely overlapped spectrum. The methodologies are demonstrated on a chiral molecule aligned in the chiral liquid crystal medium and two different organic molecules in the isotropic solutions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. ß-arylhydrazone-imine ligand complexes of nickel(II), namely, 4,10-dimethyl-5,9-diazatrideca-4,9-diene-2,12-dione-3,11-diphenylhydrazonato nickel(II), Ni(acacpn)(N2Ph-R)2 and 1,11-diphenyl-3,9-dimethyl-4,8-diazaun-deca-3,8-diene,1,11-dione-2,10-diphenyl hydrazonato nickel(II), Ni (beacpn) (N2Ph-R)2, [R = H, o-CH3p-CH3] have been prepared by metal template reactions and characterized. Both the azomethine nitrogens and α-nitrogens of bis-hydrazone form the coordination sites of the square-planar geometry around the nickel(II) ion. Loss of CO from the molecule and subsequently an interesting methyl group migration to the nucleus of the chelate ring have been observed in the mass spectrum. Structures are proposed based on the spectral and magnetic properties.

This paper deals with the application of artificial commutation for a normally rated inverter connecting a weak AC system in a multiterminal HVDC (MTDC) system. Artificial commutation is achieved using series capacitors. A modular digital simulation technique is developed to study the dynamic performance of the system. It is shown that by a proper selection of the value of the capacitor it is possible to limit the valve stresses and the DC harmonics to acceptable levels and achieve an improved performance during severe transient conditions. The determination of the value of the series capacitor is based on a parametric study.
