This paper deals with the reactive sputtering of titanium in an argon and oxygen mixture. The variation in cathode potential as a function of oxygen partial pressure has been explained in terms of cathode poisoning effects. The titania films deposited during this process have been studied for their structural and optical characteristics. The effect of substrate temperature (from 25 to 400 °C) and annealing (from 250 to 700 °C) on the packing density, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and crystallinity has been investigated. The refractive index varied from 2.24 to 2.46 and extinction coefficient from 2.6 × 10-3 to 10.4× 10-3 at 500 nm as the substrate temperature increased from 25 to 400 °C. The refractive index increased from 2.19 to 2.35 and extinction coefficient changed from 3.2× 10-3 to 11.6 × 10-3 at 500 nm as the annealing temperature was increased from 250 to 700 °C. Anatase and rutile phases have been observed in the films deposited at 400 °C substrate temperature and annealed at 300 °C. The changes in the optical constants at higher substrate temperature have been attributed to an increase in packing density, oxygen content, and crystallinity of the films.

The performance parameters e.g. non-linear coefficient (α) and breakdown electric field (Eb1mA/cm2) of ZnO based ceramic varistors were found to improve after the addition of 10 mol% MgO. The improvement in the varistor properties is examined by ac impedance spectroscopy technique in the frequency range (1 Hz–10 MHz) between temperature 25–250°C and understood in terms of differing contributions from the equivalent electrical circuit elements.

The sharp increase in microwave power loss (the reverse of what has previously been reported) at the transition temperature in high-Tc superconducting systems such as YBaCu oxide (polycrystalline bulk and thin films obtained by the laser ablation technique) and BiPbSrCaCu oxide is reported. The differences between DC resistivity ( rho ) and the microwave power loss (related to microwave surface resistance) are analysed from the data obtained by a simultaneous measurement set-up. The influence of various parameters, such as preparation conditions, thickness and aging of the sample and the probing frequency (6-18 GHz), on the variation of microwave power loss with temperature is outlined.

Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of poly2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) with varying conjugation, and polyethylene dioxythiophene complexed with polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT-PSS) in different solvents have shown the importance of the role of pi-electron conjugation and solvent-chain interactions in controlling the chain conformation and assembly. In MEH-PPV, by increasing the extent of conjugation from 30 to 100%, the persistence length (l(p)) increases from 20 to 66 angstrom. Moreover, a pronounced second peak in the pair distribution function has been observed in the fully conjugated chain, at larger length scales. This feature indicates that the chain segments tend to self-assemble as the conjugation along the chain increases. In the case of PEDOT-PSS, the chains undergo solvent induced expansion and enhanced chain organization. The clusters formed by chains are better correlated in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution than water, as observed in the scattered intensity profiles. The values of radius of gyration and the exponent (water: 2.6, DMSO: 2.31) of power-law decay, obtained from the unified scattering function (Beaucage) analysis, give evidence for chain expansion from compact (in water) to an extended coil in DMSO solutions, which is consistent with the Kratky plot analysis. The mechanism of this transition and the increase in dc conductivity of PEDOT-PSS in DMSO solution are discussed. The onset frequency for the increase in ac conduction, as well as its temperature dependence, probes the extent of the connectivity in the PEDOT-PSS system. The enhanced charge transport in PEDOT-PSS in DMSO is attributed to the extended chain conformation, as observed in the SAXS results.

High power converters are used in variable speed induction motor drive applications. Riding through a short term power supply glitch is becoming an important requirement in these power converters. The power converter uses a large number of control circuit boards for its operation. The control power supply need to ensure that any glitch in the grid side does not affect any of these control circuit boards. A power supply failure of these control cards results in shut down of the entire system. The paper discusses the ride through system developed to overcome voltage sags and short duration outages at the power supply terminals of the control cards in these converters. A 240VA non-isolated, bi-directional buck-boost converter has been designed to be used along with a stack of ultracapacitors to achieve the same. A micro-controller based digital control platform made use of to achieve the control objective. The design of the ultracapacitor stack and the bidirectional converter is described the performance of the experimental set-up is evaluated.

The equivalent circuit parameters for a pentacene organic field-effect transistor are determined from low frequency impedance measurements in the dark as well as under light illumination. The source-drain channel impedance parameters are obtained from Bode plot analysis and the deviations at low frequency are mainly due to the contact impedance. The charge accumulation at organic semiconductor-metal interface and dielectric-semiconductor interface is monitored from the response to light as an additional parameter to find out the contributions arising from photovoltaic and photoconductive effects. The shift in threshold voltage is due to the accumulation of photogenerated carriers under source-drain electrodes and at dielectric-semiconductor interface, and also this dominates the carrier transport. The charge carrier trapping at various interfaces and in the semiconductor is estimated from the dc and ac impedance measurements under illumination. The variation in the exponent s in σa.c. agr ωs as a function of temperature is reported for lithium thioborate glasses. The origin of the observed minimum in s is discussed using the diffusion-controlled relaxation (DCR) model. An entirely new model for the a.c. conductivity of highly modified ionic glasses has been proposed and expressions for relaxation identical with those of the DCR model have been obtained, providing a new explanation for the temperature behaviour of s. The origin of two activation barriers generally observed in a.c. conductivity studies is examined in the light of the new model.

This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. An automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using flyback topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from a DC supply for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

This paper proposes a method of sharing power/energy between multiple sources and multiple loads using an integrated magnetic circuit as a junction between sources and sinks. It also presents a particular use of the magnetic circuit as an ac power supply, delivering sinusoidal voltage to load irrespective of the presence of the grid, taking only active power from the grid. The proposed magnetic circuit is a three-energy-port unit, viz.: 1) power/energy from grid; 2) power energy from battery-inverter unit; and 3) power/energy delivery to the load in its particular application as quality ac power supply (QPS). The product provides sinusoidal regulated output voltage, input power-factor correction, electrical isolation between the sources and loads, low battery voltage, and control simplicity. Unlike conventional series-shunt-compensated uninterruptible power supply topologies with low battery voltage, the isolation is provided using a single magnetic circuit that results in a smaller size and lower cost. The circuit operating principles and analysis, as well as simulation and experimental results, are presented for this QPS.

Prohibitive test time, nonuniformity of excitation, and signal nonlinearity are major concerns associated with employing dc, sine, and triangular/ramp signals, respectively, while determining static nonlinearity of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with high resolution (i.e., ten or more bits). Attempts to overcome these issues have been examined with some degree of success. This paper describes a novel method of estimating the ``true'' static nonlinearity of an ADC using a low-frequency sine signal (for example, less than 10 Hz) by employing the histogram-based approach. It is based on the well-known fact that the variation of a sine signal is ``reasonably linear'' when the angle is small, for example, in the range of +/- 5 degrees to +/- 7 degrees. In the proposed method, the ADC under test has to be ``fed'' with this ``linear'' portion of the sinewave. The presence of any harmonics and offset in input excitation makes this linear part of the sine signal marginally different compared with that of an ideal ramp signal of equal amplitude. However, since it is a sinusoid, this difference can be accurately determined and later compensated from the measured ADC output. Thus, the corrected ADC output will correspond to the true ADC static nonlinearity. The implementation of the proposed method is discussed along with experimental results for two 8-b ADCs and one 10-b ADC which are then compared with the static characteristics estimated by the conventional DC method.

We have synthesised and determined the solution conformation and X-ray crystal structure of the octapeptide Ac-Delta Phe(1)-Val(2)-Delta Phe(3)-Phe(4)-Ala(5)-Val(6)-Delta Phe(7)-Gly(8)-OCH3 (Delta Phe = alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) containing three Delta Phe residues as conformation constraining residues. In the solid state, the peptide folds into (i) an N-terminal (3)10(R)-helical pentapeptide segment, (ii) a middle non-helical segment, and (iii) a C-terminal incipient (3)10(L)-helical segment. The results of H-1 NMR data also suggest that a similar multiple-turn conformation for the peptide is largely maintained in solution. Though the C-terminal helix is incipient, the overall conformation of the octapeptide matches well with the conformation of the hairpins reported. Comparison of the pi-turn seen in the octapeptide molecule with those observed in proteins at the C-terminal end of helixes shows the structural similarity among them. A water molecule mediates the 5 --> 2 hydrogen bond in the pi-turn region. This is the first example of a water-inserted pi-turn in oligopeptides reported so far. Comparison between the present octapeptide and another (3)10(R)-helical dehydro nonapeptide Boc-Val-Delta Phe-Phe-Ala-Phe-Delta Phe-Val-Delta Phe-Gly-OCH3 solved by us recently, demonstrates the possible sequence-dependent conformational variations in alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine-containing oligopeptides.

We investigate the influence of the ferromagnetic layer on the magnetic and transport properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO)/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) bilayers. The temperature dependent dc magnetization study reveals the presence of magnetic anisotropy in YBCO/LSMO bilayer as compared to the pure YBCO layer. The ac susceptibility study on YBCO/LSMO bilayers reveals stronger pinning and the temperature dependent critical current is found to be less prone to temperature. Besides, the current (I) dependent electrical transport studies on YBCO/LSMO exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting T-c with increase in I and it follows I-2/3 dependence in accord with the pair breaking effect. The higher reduction of superconducting T-c in YBCO/LSMO is believed to be due to the enhanced pair-breaking induced by the spin polarized carriers being injected into the superconductor. Electrical conductivity and dielectric relaxation studies with a wide range of compositions of lithium ion conducting glasses belonging to the ternary glass system Li2SO4-Li2O-B2-O3- have been carried out over the temperature range 150-450 K and between 10 - 10(7) Hz. DC conductivities exhibit two different activation regions. This seems to suggest the presence of a cluster tissue texture in these glasses with weakly ordered clusters of Li2SO4 and lithium berates being held together by a truly amorphous tissue of the same average composition as clusters. AC conductivity behaviour of these glasses has been analysed using both power law and stretched exponential relaxation functions. The variation of the power law exponent s and the stretched exponent beta with temperature seems to be consistent with the presence of a cluster tissue texture in these glasses.

Glasses in the system CaO-Bi2O3-B2O3 (in molar ratio) have been prepared using melt-quenching route. Ion transport characteristics were investigated for this glass using electric modulus, ac conductivity and impedance measurements. The ac conductivity was rationalized using Almond-West power law. Dielectric relaxation has been analyzed based on the behavior of electric modulus behavior. The activation energy associated with the electrical relaxation determined from the electric modulus spectra was found to be 1.76 eV, close to that the activation energy for dc conductivity (1.71 eV) indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. The stretched exponent beta (0.5-0.6) is invariant with temperature for the present glasses.
