In this study, the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission based Microwave Imager estimates (2A12) have been used to compare and contrast the characteristics of cloud liquid water and ice over the Indian land region and the ocean surrounding it, during the premonsoon (May) and monsoon (June-September) seasons. Based on the spatial homogeneity of rainfall, we have selected five regions for our study (three over ocean, two over land). Comparison across three ocean regions suggests that the cloud liquid water (CLW) over the orographically influenced Arabian Sea (close to the Indian west coast) behaves differently from the CLW over a trapped ocean (Bay of Bengal) or an open ocean (equatorial Indian Ocean). Specifically, the Arabian Sea region shows higher liquid water for a lower range of rainfall, whereas the Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean show higher liquid water for a higher range of rainfall. Apart from geographic differences, we also documented seasonal differences by comparing CLW profiles between monsoon and premonsoon periods, as well as between early and peak phases of the monsoon. We find that the CLW during the lean periods of rainfall (May or June) is higher than during the peak and late monsoon season (July-September) for raining clouds. As active and break phases are important signatures of the monsoon progression, we also analysed the differences in CLW during various phases of the monsoon, namely, active, break, active-to-break and break-to-active transition phases. We find that the cloud liquid water content during the break-to-active transition phase is significantly higher than during the active-to-break transition phase over central India. We speculate that this could be attributed to higher amount of aerosol loading over this region during the break phase. We lend credence to this aerosol-CLW/rain association by comparing the central Indian CLW with that over southeast Asia (where the aerosol loading is significantly smaller) and find that in the latter region, there are no significant differences in CLW during the different phases of the monsoon. While our hypothesis needs to be further investigated with numerical models, the results presented in this study can potentially serve as a good benchmark in evaluating the performance of cloud resolving models over the Indian region.

Novel crystalline tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by a facile and efficient low temperature solution combustion method at 400 +/- 10 degrees C using oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as fuel. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld confinement of as formed ZrO2: Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) confirmed the presence of body centered tetragonal phase. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots was found to be in the range of 7-17 nm. These results were in good agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The calculated microstrain in most of the planes indicated the presence of tensile stress along various planes of the particles. The observed space group (P4(2)/nmc) revealed the presence of cations in the 2b positions (0.75, 0.25, 0.25) and the anions in the 4d positions (0.25, 0.25, 0.45). The optical band gap energies estimated from Wood and Tauc's relation was found to be in the range 4.3-4.7 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) emission was recorded under 394 and 464 nm excitation shows an intense emission peak at 605 nm along with other emission peaks at 537, 592, 605 and 713 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. The high ratio of Intensity of (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) and (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) infers that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. CIE color coordinates indicated the red regions which could meet the needs of illumination devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Significant progress in understanding the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses (MGs) was made over the past decade, particularly on mechanisms of plastic deformation. However, recent research thrust has been on exploring the mechanics and physics of fracture. MGs can be very brittle with K-Ic values similar to silicate glasses and ceramics or very tough with K-Ic akin to high toughness crystalline metals. Even the tough MGs can become brittle with structural relaxation following annealing at temperatures close to glass transition temperature (T-g). Detailed experimental studies coupled with complementary numerical simulations of the recent past have provided insights on the micromechanisms of failure as well as nature of crack tip fields, and established the governing fracture criteria for ductile and brittle glasses. In this paper, the above advances are reviewed and outstanding issues in the context of fracture of amorphous alloys that need to be resolved are identified.

This work reports a detailed temperature dependent Raman study on the mixed crystals of K-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 (KADA) from 5K to 300K in the spectral range of 60-1200cm(-1), covering tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition accompanied by paraelectric to ferroelectric transition at T-c* similar to 60K. Multiple phase transitions below transition temperature (Tc* similar to 60K) are marked by the appearance of new modes, splitting of existing ones as well as anomalies in the self-energy parameters (i.e. mode frequencies and damping coefficient) of the phonon modes. Temperature independent behaviour of damping coefficient and abrupt jump in the mode frequency of some of the internal vibrations of AsO4 tetrahedra as well as external vibrations clearly signal long range ferroelectric ordering and proton ordering below T-c*. In addition, we observed that temperature dependence of many prominent phonon modes diverges significantly from their normal anharmonic behaviour below T-c* suggesting potential coupling between pseudospins and phonons. Mechanical properties of thin films such as residual stress and hardness are of paramount importance from the device fabrication point of view. Intrinsic stress in sputtered films can be tensile or compressive as decided by the number density and the energy of the plasma species striking the growing film. In the presence of hydrogen we analyzed the applicability of idealized stress reversal curve for amorphous silicon thin films deposited by DC, pulsed DC (PDC) and RF sputtering. We are successfully able to correlate the microstructure with the stress reversal and hardness. We observed a stress reversal from compressive to tensile with hydrogen incorporation. It was found that unlike in idealized stress reversal curve case, though the energy of plasma species is less in DC plasma, DC deposited films exhibit more compressive stress, followed by PDC and RF deposited films. A tendency towards tensile stress from compressive stress was observed at similar to 13, 18 and 23 at%H for DC, PDC and RF deposited films respectively, which is in exact agreement with the vacancy to void transition in the films. Regardless of the sputtering power mode, the hardness of a-Si:H films is found to be maximum at C-H similar to 10 at%H. Enhancement in hardness with C-H (up to C-H similar to 10 at%H) is attributed to increase of Si-H bonds. Beyond C-H similar to 10 at%H, hardness starts falling. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The variation in the electrical resistivity of the chalcogenide glasses Ge15Te85-x has been studied as a function of high pressure for pressures up to 8.5GPa. All the samples studied undergo a semi-conductor to metallic transition in a continuous manner at pressures between 1.5-2.5GPa. The transition pressure at which the samples turn metallic increases with increase in percentage of Indium. This increase is a direct consequence of the increase in network rigidity with the addition of Indium. At a constant pressure of 0.5GPa, the normalized resistivity shows some signature of the existence of the intermediate phase. Samples recovered after a pressure cycle remain amorphous suggesting that the semi-conductor to metallic transition arises from a reduction of the band gap due to pressure or the movement of the Fermi level into the conduction or valence band.

The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO3 studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at T-N(Fe/Mn) approximate to 295K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and T-N(R) approximate to 2K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295 K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 belongs to the irreducible representation Gamma(4) (G(x)A(y)F(z) or Pb'n'm). A mixed-domain structure of (Gamma(1) + Gamma(4)) is found at 250K which remains stable down to the spin re-orientation transition at T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K. Below 26K and above 250 K, the majority phase (>80%) is that of Gamma(4). Below 10K the high-temperature phase Gamma(4) remains stable till 2K. At 2 K, Tb develops a magnetic moment value of 0.6(2) mu(B)/f.u. and orders long-range in F-z compatible with the Gamma(4) representation. Our study confirms the magnetic phase transitions reported already in a single crystal of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 and, in addition, reveals the presence of mixed magnetic domains. The ratio of these magnetic domains as a function of temperature is estimated from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data. Indications of short-range magnetic correlations are present in the low-Q region of the neutron diffraction patterns at T < T-SR(Fe/Mn). These results should motivate further experimental work devoted to measure electric polarization and magnetocapacitance of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

We begin by providing observational evidence that the probability of encountering very high and very low annual tropical rainfall has increased significantly in the most recent decade (1998-present) compared with the preceding warming era (1979-1997). These changes over land and ocean are spatially coherent and comprise a rearrangement of very wet regions and a systematic expansion of dry zones. While the increased likelihood of extremes is consistent with a higher average temperature during the pause (compared with 1979-1997), it is important to note that the periods considered are also characterized by a transition from a relatively warm to a cold phase of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). To probe the relation between contrasting phases of ENSO and extremes in accumulation further, a similar comparison is performed between 1960 and 1978 (another extended cold phase of ENSO) and the aforementioned warming era. Though limited by land-only observations, in this cold-to-warm transition, remarkably, a near-exact reversal of extremes is noted both statistically and geographically. This is despite the average temperature being higher in 1979-1997 compared with 1960-1978. Taking this evidence together, we propose that there is a fundamental mode of natural variability, involving the waxing and waning of extremes in accumulation of global tropical rainfall with different phases of ENSO.

RecA plays a central role in bacterial DNA repair, homologous recombination, and restoration of stalled replication forks by virtue of its active extended nucleoprotein filament. Binding of ATP and its subsequent recognition by the carboxamide group of a highly conserved glutamine (GIn196 in MsRecA) have been implicated in the formation of active RecA nucleoprotein filaments. Although the mechanism of ATP-dependent structural transitions in RecA has been proposed on the basis of low-resolution electron microscopic reconstructions, the precise sequence of events that constitute these transitions is poorly understood. On the basis of biochemical and crystallographic analyses of MsRecA variants carrying mutations in highly conserved Gln196 and Arg198 residues, we propose that the disposition of the interprotomer interface is the structural basis of allosteric activation of RecA. Furthermore, this study accounts, for the contributions of several conserved amino acids to ATP hydrolysis and to the transition from collapsed to extended filament forms in Mycobacterium smegmatis RecA (MsRecA). In addition to their role in the inactive compressed state, the study reveals a role for GIn196 and Arg198 along with Phe219 in ATP hydrolysis in the active extended nucleoprotein filament. Finally, our data suggest that the primary, but not secondary, nucleotide binding site in MsRecA isomerizes into the ATP binding site present in the extended nucleoprotein filament.

Vanadium Oxide has been a frontrunner in the field of oxide electronics because of its metal-insulator transition (MIT). The interplay of different structures of VO2 has played a crucial role in deciding the magnitude of the first order MIT. Substitution doping has been found to introduce different polymorphs of VO2. Hence the role of substitution doping in stabilizing the competing phases of VO2 in the thin film form remains underexplored. Consequently there have been reports both discounting and approving such a stabilization of competing phases in VO2. It is reported in the literature that the bandwidth of the hysteresis and transition temperature of VO2 can be tuned by substitutional doping of VO2 with W. In this work, we have adopted a novel technique called, Ultrasonic Nebulized Spray Pyrolysis of Aqueous Combustion Mixture (UNSPACM) to deposit VO2 and W- doped VO2 as thin films. XRD and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the role of tungsten on the structure of VO2 thin films. Morphology of the thin films was found to be consisting of globular and porous nanoparticles of size similar to 20nm. Transition temperature decreased with the addition of W. We found that for 2.0 at % W doping in VO2, the transition temperature has reduced from 68 degrees C to 25 degrees C. It is noted that W-doping in the process of reducing the transition temperature, alters the local structure and also increases room temperature carrier concentration. (c) 2016 Author(s).

Controlled variation of the electronic properties of. two-dimensional (2D) materials by applying strain has emerged as a promising way to design materials for customized applications. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that while the electronic structure and indirect band gap of SnS2 do not change significantly with the number of layers, they can be reversibly tuned by applying biaxial tensile (BT), biaxial compressive (BC), and normal compressive (NC) strains. Mono to multilayered SnS2 exhibit a reversible semiconductor to metal (S-M) transition with applied strain. For bilayer (2L) SnS2, the S-Mtransition occurs at the strain values of 17%,-26%, and -24% under BT, BC, and NC strains, respectively. Due to weaker interlayer coupling, the critical strain value required to achieve the S-Mtransition in SnS2 under NC strain is much higher than for MoS2. From a stability viewpoint, SnS2 becomes unstable at very low strain values on applying BC (-6.5%) and BT strains (4.9%), while it is stable even up to the transition point (-24%) in the case of NC strain. In addition to the reversible tuning of the electronic properties of SnS2, we also show tunability in the phononic band gap of SnS2, which increases with applied NC strain. This gap increases three times faster than for MoS2. This simultaneous tunability of SnS2 at the electronic and phononic levels with strain, makes it a potential candidate in field effect transistors (FETs) and sensors as well as frequency filter applications.

The TCP transcription factors control important aspects of plant development. Members of class I TCP proteins promote cell cycle by regulating genes directly involved in cell proliferation. In contrast, members of class II TCP proteins repress cell division. While it has been postulated that class II proteins induce differentiation signal, their exact role on cell cycle has not been studied. Here, we report that TCP4, a class II TCP protein from Arabidopsis that repress cell proliferation in developing leaves, inhibits cell division by blocking G1 -> S transition in budding yeast. Cells expressing TCP4 protein with increased transcriptional activity fail to progress beyond G1 phase. By analyzing global transcriptional status of these cells, we show that expression of a number of cell cycle genes is altered. The possible mechanism of G1 -> S arrest is discussed.
