High-temperature superconductivity in oxides of the type(La, Ln)2?xBax(Sr)xCuO4, Y(Ln)Ba2Cu3O7??, La3?xBa3+xCu6O14, and related systems is discussed with emphasis on aspects related to experimental solid-state chemistry. All of these oxides possess perovskite-related structures. Oxygen-excess and La-deficient La2CuO4 also exhibit superconductivity in the 2040 K just as La2?xBax(Srx)CuO4; these oxides are orthorhombic in the superconductivity phase. The crucial role of oxygen stoichiometry in the superconductivity ofYBa2Cu3O7?? (Tc = 95 ± 5K) is examined; this oxide remains orthorhombic up to ? ? 0.6 and becomes tetragonal and nonsuperconducting beyond this value of ?. Oxygen stoichiometry in this and related oxides has to be understood in terms of structure and disorder. The structure of La3?xBa3+xCu6O14 is related to that of YBa2Cu3O7, the orthorhombic structure manifesting itself when the population of O1 oxygens (along the Cusingle bondOsingle bondCu chains) is preponderant compared to that of O5 oxygens (along thea-axis); nearly equal populations of O1 and O5 sites give rise to the tetragonal structure. A transition from a high-Tc (95 K) superconductivity regime to a low-Tc (not, vert, similar60 K) regime occurs in YBa2Cu3O7?? accompanying a change in ?. There is no evidence for Cu3+ in these nominally mixed valent copper oxides. Instead, holes are present on oxygens giving rise to O? or O2?2 species, the concentration of these species increasing with the lowering of temperature. Certain interesting aspects of the superconducting oxides such as domain or twin boundaries, Raman spectra, microwave absorption, and anomalous high-temperature resistivity drops are presented along with the important material parameters. Preparative aspects of the superconducting oxides are briefly discussed. Phase transitions seem to occur atTc as well as at not, vert, similar240 K in YBa2Cu3O7.

Body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) ZnS nanocrystals have been synthesized, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, by using the chemical coprecipitation method at higher synthesis temperatures of 65 and 95 degrees C. It is confirmed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies that in the high-temperature-synthesized samples, cubic and BCT phases coexist, in contrast to the room-temperature-synthesized sample, which consists of only cubic phase with sizes of the particles lying between 2 and 3 nm. The sizes of BCT phase nanocrystals are bigger than those of cubic phase of ZnS. The presence of BCT phase of ZnS in the samples is increased from 40 to 90% when the temperature of synthesis is increased from 65 to 95 degrees C. The nanocrystalline nature and UV-Vis absorption characteristics of the prepared samples have been studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a UV-Visible pectrophotometer, respectively. The room-temperature-synthesized ZnS sample shows photoluminescence (PL) emission in the blue region with multiple peaks, whereas the high-temperature-synthesized samples show PL emissions in the visible region. The Gaussian fittings of the measured PL spectra shows that three PL peaks at 429, 477, and 525 nm are appeared in the 65 degrees C sample and two peaks at 491 and 540 nm appear in the 95 degrees C sample with the enhanced PL intensity of the green peak at 540 nm. Pb0.76Ca0.24TiO3 (PCT24) nanoparticles were synthesized by modified sal gel method and characterized by a number of experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction, TGA-DTA, FTIR and transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations demonstrated that the postannealed (650 degrees C for 1 h) PCT24 nanoparticles have tetragonal perovskite crystal structure. TEM have been employed to characterize the morphology, structure and composition of the as prepared nanoparticles. Dielectric results indicates the evidence for relaxor type behavior while observed leaky ferroelectric loops may be because of the defects such as grain boundaries and the pores in the sample as the sample was not heated at higher temperature, to retain the nanosize dimension of the particles.

Introduction Dicalcium strontium propionate (DCSP) undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition at about 28 1.5 K, with the spontaneous polarization occurring along the tetragonal C-axis.1 Takashige et al.2,3 have recently reported ferroelectricity in annealed samples of dicalcium lead propionate (DCLP) in the range 191 K to 331 K. The removal of the inner biasing field by annealing has been known in the case of DCLP3 and DCSP.4 Because of the possible dependence of the inner biasing field on the particle size, a study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric behaviour of the powdered samples of these compounds was undertaken.

Laser sintering was carried out using a high power continuous-wave CO2 laser to prepare pellets of zirconia (ZrO2), hafnia (HfO2) and yttria (Y2O3) mixed oxides as starting materials in the deposition of optical coatings. Hardened recrystallized pellets appeared to have been formed during laser treatment. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transformation in the binary system while the ternary system was found to have a mixture of two crystalline phases. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy showed two isothermal crystalline regions in the ternary system. The optical inhomogeneity was low in the films deposited from the laser-fused pellets, but the absorption at a wavelength of 351 nm increased with increasing HfO2 content. The films deposited from laser-fused pellets were analysed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis and found to be stoichiometric and homogeneous.

Water-mediated transformations provide a useful handle for exploring the flexibility in protein molecules and the invariant features in their hydration shells. Low-humidity monoclinic hen egg white lysozyme, resulting from such a transformation, has perhaps the lowest solvent content observed in any protein crystal so far and has a well-ordered structure. A detailed comparison involving this structure, low-humidity tetragonal lysozyme, and the other available refined crystal structures of the enzyme permits the delineation of the relatively rigid, moderately flexible and highly flexible regions of the molecule. The relatively rigid region forms a contiguous structural unit close to the molecular centroid and encompasses parts of of the main beta-structure and three alpha-helices. The hydration shell of the protein contains 30 invariant water molecules. Many of them are involved in holding different parts of the molecule together or in stabilizing local structure. Five of the six invariant water molecules attached to the substrate-binding region form part of a water cluster contiguous with the side-chains of the catalytic residues Glu-35 and Asp-52.

Studies of ZrO2 films prepared by d.c. reactive magnetron sputtering are described. The effects of substrate temperature on the packing density, refractive index, extinction coefficient and crystallinity phase have been investigated in the temperature range 25–450 °C. The refractive index varied from 1.84 to 1.95 and extinction coefficient from 2 × 10−3 to 9.6 × 10−3. This was explained on the basis of an increase in packing density from 0.686 to 0.813. The change in packing density has been attributed to a decrease in the oxygen condensation at higher temperatures. Annealing results in a decrease in refractive index and increase in extinction coefficient. The films deposited at 150 °C showed a monoclinic phase which transforms to a tetragonal phase at higher substrate temperatures.

Hydroxyapatite(OHAp)-based ceramic composites with added ZrO2 have been prepared both by sintering at 1400 °C and by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 1450 °C and 140 MPa pressure (argon atmosphere). The development of the crystalline phases and the microstructure of the composites have been examined using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, infrared and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) spectroscopic techniques. The fracture toughness and biocompatibility of the composites have also been studied. The effect of the addition of CeO2- and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 and of simple monoclinic ZrO2 to the initial physical mixture, on the structure and properties of the resulting composites has been investigated. In most of the sintered or HIP samples, the OHAp decomposes into tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). CaO, which forms as a product of decomposition, dissolves completely in ZrO2 and stabilizes the latter in its cubic/tetragonal phase. Presence of the β-TCP phase in the product seems to be the result of a structural synergistic effect of hexagonal OHAp. Two structurally distinct orthophosphate groups have been identified in the composites by MASNMR of 31P and attributed to decomposition products of OHAp at higher temperatures. The composites possess high KIC values (2–3 times higher than that of pure OHAp). Decomposition of hydroxyapatite gives rise to differences in microstructure between HIP and simply sintered composites although fracture toughness values are similar in magnitude indicating the presence of several toughening mechanisms. The in vitro SP2-O cell test suggests that these composites possess good biocompatibility. The combination of good biocompatibility, desirable microstructure and easy availability of initial reactants indicates that the simply sintered composite of OHAp and monoclinic ZrO2(ZAP-30) appears to be the most suitable for prosthetic applications.

A hydrothermal reaction of Mn(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, Co(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and 1,2,4 benzenetricarboxylic acid at 220 degrees C for 24 h gives rise to a mixed metal MOF compound, CoMn2(C6H3(COO)(3))(2)], I. The structure is formed by the connectivity between octahedral CoO6 and trigonal prism MnO6 units connected through their vertices forming a Kagome layer, which are pillared by the trimellitate. Magnetic susceptibility studies on the MOF compound indicate a canted anti-ferromagnetic behavior, due to the large antisymmetric DM interaction between the M2+ ions (M = Mn, Co). Thermal decomposition studies indicate that the MOF compound forms a tetragonal mixed-metal spinel phase, CoMn2O4, with particle sizes in the nano regime at 400 degrees C. The particle size of the CoMn2O4 can be controlled by varying the decomposition temperature of the parent MOF compound. Magnetic studies of the CoMn2O4 compound suggests that the coercivity and the ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures are dependent on the particle size.

We report a large decrease in tetragonal to cubic phase transformation temperature when grain size of bulk CuFe2O4 is reduced by mechanical ball milling. The change in phase transformation temperature was inferred from in situ high temperature conductivity and x-ray diffraction measurements. The decrease in conductivity with grain size suggests that ball milling has not induced any oxygen vacancy while the role of cation distribution in the observed decrease in phase transformation temperature is ruled out from in-field Fe-57 Mossbauer and extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The reduction in the phase transformation temperature is attributed to the stability of structures with higher crystal symmetry at lower grain sizes due to negative pressure effect. We present a first-principles theory of the equilibrium b.c.c.-f.c.c. interface at coexistence using the density functional method. We assume that the interfacial region has local body-centred tetragonal (b.c.t.) symmetry and predict typical interfacial widths to be of order 2 to 3 lattice spacings with typical energies close to 0.05 J/m2. These quantities are in good agreement with laboratory measurements on coherent interfaces.

We have carried out fluorination on La2NiO4 and La2CuO4+?. Only a small fraction of fluorine enters the bulk; the rest resides on the surface. The cuprate after fluorination exhibits greater departures from tetragonal symmetry than the parent material and transforms at not, vert, similar40 K to the superconducting state. By contrast, the nickelate deviates less from tetragonal symmetry upon fluorination; no superconductivity was observed down to 4.2 K.
