The nature and extent of the influence of chloromycetin on larval digestion and utilization of the principal dietary constituents-the proteins, fats, and minerals-was studied. The antibiotic was shown to influence favourably the utilization of all the constituents studied. The results have been discussed in the light of these and other findings.

Detailed high-temperature compression creep experiments on a pure 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3YTZ) and 3YTZ doped with 4.8 wt% TiO2 revealed that both materials exhibit a similar transition in stress exponents from n similar to 1 to n similar to 2 with a decrease in stress. The stress exponent of 1 and the inverse grain size dependence p of similar to 3 are consistent with the Coble diffusion creep at high stresses; the increase in stress exponent at low stresses is attributed to an interface-controlled diffusion creep process. Measurements revealed that grain-boundary sliding contributes to >similar to 50% of the total strain in both regions with n similar to 1 and n similar to 2, indicating the operation of the same fundamental deformation process in both regions. The creep data indicate that doping with TiO2 leads to an increase in the grain-boundary diffusion coefficients. The increase observed in the dihedral angle with doping is also consistent with the increase in grain boundary diffusion coefficient and the reported enhanced ductility in such materials.

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependent structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. We observe that these films undergo a reduction in Curie temperature (T-c) with a decrease in film thickness, and it is found to be primarily caused by the finite size effect since the finite scaling law [T-c(infinity) T-c(t)/T-c(infinity) = (c/t)lambda holds good over the studied thickness range. We rule out the contribution from the strain induced suppression of Curie temperature with decreasing film thickness since all the films exhibit a constant out of plane tensile strain (0.5%) irrespective of their varying thickness. However, we observe that the coercivity of the films is an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk due to the tensile strain. In addition, we also observe an increase in the magneto resistance peak and a decrease in coercivity and electrical resistivity with an increase in film thickness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The possible mechanisms of particle aggregation and reduction in liquid limit of the Cochin marine clay on drying are investigated. Mineralogical analysis showed the absence of halloysite in the marine specimen. Experimental results also ruled out the possibility of cementitious material being responsible for particle aggregation and reduction in clay plasticity on drying. The presence of calcium and magnesium as the predominant exchangeable ions and of a high pore salt concentration facilitates strong interparticle attraction and small particle separations; the latter leads to development of significant capillary stresses that permits an intimate contact of particles and growth of strong van der Waals' and Coulombic bonds.

Reaction of sodium 2-formylbenzenesulphonate (1) with thionyl chloride or phosphorous pentachloride gives a mixture of pseudo (2) and normal (3) sulphonyl chlorides. Whereas ammonium 2-carboxybenzenesulphonate (6) gives only the normal sulphonyl chloride (7) on reaction with thionyl chloride, a mixture of normal (7) and pseudo (8) isomers are formed on reaction with phosphorous pentachloride. Sodium 2-benzoylbenzenesulphonate (15), on the other hand, gives the corresponding normal sulphonyl chloride (16) on reaction with both of the reagents mentioned above. Based on these observations it is concluded that γ-keto sulphonic acids are amenable to the influence of γ-carbonyl group as in the case of γ-keto carboxylic acids but to a lesser extent. © 1989 Indian Academy of Sciences.

The radial current density on an MPD arcjet cathode surface is theoretically investigated for five propellants. It is found that excessive current concentration at the upstream end of the cathode occurs in the case of hydrogen. This undesirable effect is traced to the higher electrical conductivity of hydrogen plasma.

We present observations of radio recombination lines (RRL) from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 8.1 GHz (H92 alpha) and 1.4 GHz (H167 alpha and H165 alpha) and at 84 GHz (H42 alpha), 96 GHz (H40 alpha) and 207 GHz (H31 alpha) using the Very Large Array and the IRAM 30 m telescope, respectively. RRLs were detected at all the frequencies except 1.4 GHz, where a sensitive upper limit was obtained. We also present continuum flux measurements at these frequencies as well as at 327 MHz made with the VLA. The continuum spectrum, which has a spectral index alpha similar to -0.6 (S-nu proportional to nu(alpha)) between 5 and 10 GHz, shows a break near 1.5 GHz, a prominent turnover below 500 MHz, and a flatter spectral index above 50 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3.2 x 10(7) M., requiring 3 x 10(5) O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate N-Lyc similar to 1.3 x 10(55) photons s(-1). The ratio of the expected to observed Br alpha and Br gamma fluxes implies a dust extinction A(V) similar to 45 mag. The derived Lyman continuum photon production rate implies a continuous star formation rate (SFR) averaged over the lifetime of OB stars of similar to 240 M yr(-1). The Lyman continuum photon Production rate of similar to 3% associated with the high-density H II regions implies a similar SFR at recent epochs (t < 10(5) yr). An alternative model of high-density gas, which cannot be excluded on the basis of the available data, predicts 10 times higher SFR at recent epochs. If confirmed, this model implies that star formation in Arp 220 consists of multiple starbursts of very high SFR (few times 10(3) M. yr(-1)) and short duration (similar to 10(5) yr). The similarity of IR excess, L-IR/L-Ly alpha similar to 24, in Arp 220 to values observed in starburst galaxies shows that most of the high luminosity of Arp 220 is due to the ongoing starburst rather than to a hidden active galactic nucleus (AGN). A comparison of the IR excesses in Arp 220, the Galaxy, and M33 indicates that the starburst in Arp 220 has an initial mass function that is similar to that in normal galaxies and has a duration longer than 107 yr. If there was no infall of gas during this period, then the star formation efficiency (SFE) in Arp 220 is similar to 50%. The high SFR and SFE in Arp 220 is consistent with their known dependences on mass and density of gas in star-forming regions of normal galaxies.

We investigate the influence of viscoelastic nature of the adhesive on the intermittent peel front dynamics by extending a recently introduced model for peeling of an adhesive tape. As time and rate-dependent deformation of the adhesives are measured in stationary conditions, a crucial step in incorporating the viscoelastic effects applicable to unstable intermittent peel dynamics is the introduction of a dynamization scheme that eliminates the explicit time dependence in terms of dynamical variables. We find contrasting influences of viscoelastic contribution in different regions of tape mass, roller inertia, and pull velocity. As the model acoustic energy dissipated depends on the nature of the peel front and its dynamical evolution, the combined effect of the roller inertia and pull velocity makes the acoustic energy noisier for small tape mass and low-pull velocity while it is burstlike for low-tape mass, intermediate values of the roller inertia and high-pull velocity. The changes are quantified by calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent and analyzing the statistical distributions of the amplitudes and durations of the model acoustic energy signals. Both single and two stage power-law distributions are observed. Scaling relations between the exponents are derived which show that the exponents corresponding to large values of event sizes and durations are completely determined by those for small values. Th scaling relations are found to be satisfied in all cases studied. Interestingly, we find only five types of model acoustic emission signals among multitude of possibilities of the peel front configurations.

In this study, we investigated measures of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory in regards to heart rate variability in 27 normal control subjects in supine and standing postures, and 14 subjects in spontaneous and controlled breathing conditions. We examined minimum embedding dimension (MED), largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) and measures of nonlinearity (NL) of heart rate time series. MED quantifies the system's complexity, LLE predictability and NL, a measure of deviation from linear processes. There was a significant decrease in complexity (P<0.00001), a decrease in predictability (P<0.00001) and an increase in nonlinearity (P=0.00001) during the change from supine to standing posture. Decrease in MED, and increases in NL score and LLE in standing posture appear to be partly due to an increase in sympathetic activity of the autonomous nervous system in standing posture. An improvement in predictability during controlled breathing appears to be due to the introduction of a periodic component. (C) 2000 published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Silicon dioxide films are extensively used as protective, barrier and also low index films in multilayer optical devices. In this paper, the optical properties of electron beam evaporated SiO2 films, including absorption in the UV, visible and IR regions, are reported as a function of substrate temperature and post-deposition heat treatment. A comparative study of the optical properties of SiO2 films deposited in neutral and ionized oxygen is also made.

A link between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and multidecadal variability of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall is unraveled and a long sought physical mechanism linking Atlantic climate and monsoon has been identified. The AMO produces persistent weakening (strengthening) of the meridional gradient of tropospheric temperature (TT) by setting up negative (positive) TT anomaly over Eurasia during northern late summer/autumn resulting in early (late) withdrawal of the south west monsoon and persistent decrease (increase) of seasonal monsoon rainfall. On inter-annual time scales, strong North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) or North Annular mode (NAM) influences the monsoon by producing similar TT anomaly over Eurasia. The AMO achieves the interdecadal modulation of the monsoon by modulating the frequency of occurrence of strong NAO/NAM events. This mechanism also provides a basis for explaining the observed teleconnection between North Atlantic temperature and the Asian monsoon in paleoclimatic proxies. Citation: Goswami, B. N., M. S. Two distinct ferromagnetic phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 having monoclinic structure with distinct physical properties have been studied. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature T-c is found to be different for both the phases. The origin of such contrasting characteristics is assigned to the changes in the distance(s) and angle(s) between Mn-O-Co resulting from distortions observed from neutron diffraction studies. Investigations on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for such structural characteristics, which affects the exchange interaction. The difference in B-site ordering which is evident from the neutron diffraction is also responsible for the difference in T-c. Raman scattering suggests the presence of spin-phonon coupling for both the phases around the T-c. Electrical transport properties of both the phases have been investigated based on the lattice distortion.

An attempt is made to study the Einstein relation for the diffusivity-to-mobility ratio (DMR) under crossed fields' configuration in nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law by incorporating the crystal field in the Hamiltonian and including the anisotropies of the effective electron mass and the spin-orbit splitting constants within the framework of kp formalisms. The corresponding results for III-V, ternary and quaternary compounds form a special case of our generalized analysis. The DMR has also been investigated for II-VI and stressed materials on the basis of various appropriate dispersion relations. We have considered n-CdGeAs2, n-Hg1-xCdxTe, n-In1-xGaxAsyP1-y lattice matched to InP, p-CdS and stressed n-InSb materials as examples. The DMR also increases with increasing electric field and the natures of oscillations are totally band structure dependent with different numerical values. It has been observed that the DMR exhibits oscillatory dependences with inverse quantizing magnetic field and carrier degeneracy due to the Subhnikov-de Haas effect. An experimental method of determining the DMR for degenerate materials in the present case has been suggested. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
