The phosphate-inhibitable neutral protease activity of the heavy mitochondrial fraction of rat liver is of lysosomal origin. The activity is essentially due to the thiol proteinases of the lysosomes. Digitonin treatment of the mitochondrial fraction results in the release of about 85 per cent of the neutral protease activity and the residual activity has an alkaline pH optimum and is not inhibited by phosphate. Clofibrate feeding at 0.5 per cent level in the diet results in enhanced levels of lysosomal enzymes. The increase is however restricted to the lysosome-rich fraction such that the activities associated with the heavy mitochondrial fraction show a significant decrease. It is suggested that clofibrate inhibits engulfment of mitochondria by lysosomes and this results in enhanced mitochondrial protein content.

First, the non-linear response of a gyrostabilized platform to a small constant input torque is analyzed in respect to the effect of the time delay (inherent or deliberately introduced) in the correction torque supplied by the servomotor, which itself may be non-linear to a certain extent. The equation of motion of the platform system is a third order nonlinear non-homogeneous differential equation. An approximate analytical method of solution of this equation is utilized. The value of the delay at which the platform response becomes unstable has been calculated by using this approximate analytical method. The procedure is illustrated by means of a numerical example. Second, the non-linear response of the platform to a random input has been obtained. The effects of several types of non-linearity on reducing the level of the mean square response have been investigated, by applying the technique of equivalent linearization and solving the resulting integral equations by using laguerre or Gaussian integration techniques. The mean square responses to white noise and band limited white noise, for various values of the non-linear parameter and for different types of non-linearity function, have been obtained. For positive values of the non-linear parameter the levels of the non-linear mean square responses to both white noise and band-limited white noise are low as compared to the linear mean square response. For negative values of the non-linear parameter the level of the non-linear mean square response at first increases slowly with increasing values of the non-linear parameter and then suddenly jumps to a high level, at a certain value of the non-linearity parameter.

Experiments and computer simulation studies have revealed existence of rich dynamics in the orientational relaxation of molecules in confined systems such as water in reverse micelles, cyclodextrin cavities, and nanotubes. Here we introduce a novel finite length one dimensional Ising model to investigate the propagation and the annihilation of dynamical correlations in finite systems and to understand the intriguing shortening of the orientational relaxation time that has been reported for small sized reverse micelles. In our finite sized model, the two spins at the two end cells are oriented in the opposite directions to mimic the effects of surface that in real system fixes water orientation in the opposite directions. This produces opposite polarizations to propagate inside from the surface and to produce bulklike condition at the center. This model can be solved analytically for short chains. For long chains, we solve the model numerically with Glauber spin flip dynamics (and also with Metropolis single-spin flip Monte Carlo algorithm). We show that model nicely reproduces many of the features observed in experiments. Due to the destructive interference among correlations that propagate from the surface to the core, one of the rotational relaxation time components decays faster than the bulk. In general, the relaxation of spins is nonexponential due to the interplay between various interactions. In the limit of strong coupling between the spins or in the limit of low temperature, the nature of relaxation of the spins undergoes a qualitative change with the emergence of a homogeneous dynamics where decay is predominantly exponential, again in agreement with experiments. Avoiding the loss of coherence of quantum mechanical states is an important prerequisite for quantum information processing. Dynamical decoupling (DD) is one of the most effective experimental methods for maintaining coherence, especially when one can access only the qubit system and not its environment (bath). It involves the application of pulses to the system whose net effect is a reversal of the system-environment interaction. In any real system, however, the environment is not static, and therefore the reversal of the system-environment interaction becomes imperfect if the spacing between refocusing pulses becomes comparable to or longer than the correlation time of the environment. The efficiency of the refocusing improves therefore if the spacing between the pulses is reduced. Here, we quantify the efficiency of different DD sequences in preserving different quantum states. We use C-13 nuclear spins as qubits and an environment of H-1 nuclear spins as the environment, which couples to the qubit via magnetic dipole-dipole couplings. Strong dipole-dipole couplings between the proton spins result in a rapidly fluctuating environment with a correlation time of the order of 100 mu s. Our experimental results show that short delays between the pulses yield better performance if they are compared with the bath correlation time. However, as the pulse spacing becomes shorter than the bath correlation time, an optimum is reached. For even shorter delays, the pulse imperfections dominate over the decoherence losses and cause the quantum state to decay.

Cubic pyrochlore Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7 thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on Pt(200)/SiO2/Si at 500, 550, 600, and 650 degrees C. The thin films with (222) preferred orientation were found to grow at 650 degrees C with better crystallinity which was established by the lowest full-width half maxima of similar to 0.38. The dielectric response of the thin films grown at 650 degrees C have been characterized within a temperature range of 270-650 K and a frequency window of 0.1-100 kHz. The dielectric dispersion in the thin films shows a Maxwell-Wagner type relaxation with two different kinds of response confirmed by temperature dependent Nyquist plots. The ac conduction of the films showed a varied behavior in two different frequency regions. The power law exponent values of more than 1 at high frequency are explained by a jump-relaxation-model. The possibility of grain boundary related large polaronic hopping, due to two different power law exponents and transformation of double to single response in Nyquist plots at high temperature, has been excluded. The ``attempt jump frequency'' obtained from temperature dependent tangent loss and real part of dielectric constants, has been found to lie in the range of their lattice vibronic frequencies (10(12)-10(13) Hz). The activation energy arising from a large polaronic hopping due to trapped charge at low frequency region has been calculated from the ac conduction behavior. The range of activation energies (0.26-0.59. eV) suggests that the polaronic hopping at low frequency is mostly due to oxygen vacancies. Purpose - This paper aims to validate a comprehensive aeroelastic analysis for a helicopter rotor with the higher harmonic control aeroacoustic rotor test (HART-II) wind tunnel test data. Design/methodology/approach - Aeroelastic analysis of helicopter rotor with elastic blades based on finite element method in space and time and capable of considering higher harmonic control inputs is carried out. Moderate deflection and coriolis nonlinearities are included in the analysis. The rotor aerodynamics are represented using free wake and unsteady aerodynamic models. Findings - Good correlation between analysis and HART-II wind tunnel test data is obtained for blade natural frequencies across a range of rotating speeds. The basic physics of the blade mode shapes are also well captured. In particular, the fundamental flap, lag and torsion modes compare very well. The blade response compares well with HART-II result and other high-fidelity aeroelastic code predictions for flap and torsion mode. For the lead-lag response, the present analysis prediction is somewhat better than other aeroelastic analyses. Research limitations/implications - Predicted blade response trend with higher harmonic pitch control agreed well with the wind tunnel test data, but usually contained a constant offset in the mean values of lead-lag and elastic torsion response. Improvements in the modeling of the aerodynamic environment around the rotor can help reduce this gap between the experimental and numerical results. Practical implications - Correlation of predicted aeroelastic response with wind tunnel test data is a vital step towards validating any helicopter aeroelastic analysis. Such efforts lend confidence in using the numerical analysis to understand the actual physical behavior of the helicopter system. Also, validated numerical analyses can take the place of time-consuming and expensive wind tunnel tests during the initial stage of the design process. Originality/value - While the basic physics appears to be well captured by the aeroelastic analysis, there is need for improvement in the aerodynamic modeling which appears to be the source of the gap between numerical predictions and HART-II wind tunnel experiments.

Results are reported of comparative measurements made in 14 HV (high-voltage) laboratories in ten different countries. The theory of the proposed methods of characterizing the dynamic behavior is given, and the parameters to be used are discussed. Comparative measurements made using 95 systems based on 53 dividers are analyzed. This analysis shows that many of the system now in use, even though they fulfil the basic response requirements of the standards, do not meet the accuracy requirements. Because no transfer measurements were made between laboratories, there is no way to detect similar errors in both the system under test and the reference system. Hence, the situation may be worse than reported. This has led to the recommendation that comparative measurements should be the main route for quantifying industrial impulse measuring systems

The purified trehalases of the mesophilic fungus, Neurospora crassa, and the thermophilic fungus, Thermomyces lanuginosus, had similar temperature and pH optima for activity, but differed in molecular weight, electrophoretic mobility and Michaelis constant. At lower concentration, trehalases from both fungi were inactivated to similar extent at 60°C. While purified trehalase of T. lanuginosus was afforded protection against heat-inactivation by proteinaceous protective factor(s) present in mycelial extracts, by bovine serum albumin and by casein, these did not afford protection to N. crassa trehalase against heat inactivation. Both trehalases exhibited discontinuous Arrhenius plots with temperature of discontinuity at 40°C. The activation energy calculated from the slope of the Arrhenius plot was higher for the T. lanuginosus enzyme. The plots of apparent K m versus 1/T for trehalases of N. crassa and T. lanuginosus were linear from 30° to 60°C. The results show that purified trehalases of the mesophilic and the thermophilic fungus are distinct. Although, these exhibit similar thermostability of their catalytic function at low concentration, distinctive thermal stability characteristics of thermophilic enzyme become apparent at high protein concentration. This could be brought about in the cell by the enzyme itself, or by other proteins.

Zr doping in ceria (CeO2) results in enhanced static dielectric response compared to pure ceria. On the other hand, Ti doping in ceria keeps its dielectric constant unchanged. We use first-principles density functional theory calculations based on pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis to determine electronic properties and dielectric response of Zr/Ti-doped and oxygen-vacancy-introduced ceria. Softening of phonon modes is responsible for the enhancement in dielectric response of Zr-doped ceria compared to that of pure ceria. The ceria-zirconia mixed oxides should have potential use as high-k materials in the semiconductor industry. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present results for the QCD spectrum and the matrix elements of scalar and axial-vector densities at β=6/g2=5.4, 5.5, 5.6. The lattice update was done using the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to include two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions. We have explored quark masses in the range ms≤mq≤3ms. The results for the spectrum are similar to quenched simulations and mass ratios are consistent with phenomenological heavy-quark models. The results for matrix elements of the scalar density show that the contribution of sea quarks is comparable to that of the valence quarks. This has important implications for the pion-nucleon σ term.
