In this study we present approximate analytical expressions for estimating the variation in multipole expansion coefficients as a function of the size of the apertures in the electrodes in axially symmetric (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) ion trap ion traps. Following the approach adopted in our earlier studies which focused on the role of apertures to fields within the traps, here too, the analytical expression we develop is a sum of two terms, A(n,noAperiure), the multipole expansion coefficient for a trap with no apertures and A(n,dueToAperture), the multipole expansion coefficient contributed by the aperture. A(n,noAperture) has been obtained numerically and A(n,dueToAperture) is obtained from the n th derivative of the potential within the trap. The expressions derived have been tested on two 3D geometries and two 2D geometries. These include the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the cylindrical ion trap (CIT) for 3D geometries and the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT) for the 2D geometries. Multipole expansion coefficients A(2) to A(12), estimated by our analytical expressions, were compared with the values obtained numerically (using the boundary element method) for aperture sizes varying up to 50% of the trap dimension. In all the plots presented, it is observed that our analytical expression for the variation of multipole expansion coefficients versus aperture size closely follows the trend of the numerical evaluations for the range of aperture sizes considered. The maximum relative percentage errors, which provide an estimate of the deviation of our values from those obtained numerically for each multipole expansion coefficient, are seen to be largely in the range of 10-15%. The leading multipole expansion coefficient, A(2), however, is seen to be estimated very well by our expressions, with most values being within 1% of the numerically determined values, with larger deviations seen for the QIT and the LIT for large aperture sizes. Ga1-xMnxSb crystals are grown with different Mn doping concentrations by the horizontal Bridgman method (x = 0 - 0.04). Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies are carried out in the temperature range 3-300 K. Optical absorption studies reveal that the inter-valence band transition from the spin-orbit split-off band to the light/heavy hole bands is dominant over the fundamental valence band to conduction band absorption. In higher doped crystals, the fundamental absorption peak is merged with the inter-valence band transition and could not be resolved. Photoluminescence measurements in heavily doped crystals reveal the band gap narrowing and band filling effects due to the Fermi level shifting into the valence band.

Third-order nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients of a few-layer boron carbon nitride (BCN) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspensions have been measured at 3.2 eV in the femtosecond regime. Optical limiting behavior is exhibited by BCN as compared to saturable absorption in RGO. Nondegenerate time-resolved differential transmissions from BCN and RGO show different relaxation times. These differences in the optical nonlinearity and carrier dynamics are discussed in the light of semiconducting electronic band structure of BCN vis-a-vis the Dirac linear band structure of graphene. We report a precise measurement of the hyperfine interval in the 2P(1/2) state of Li-7. The transition from the ground state (D-1 line) is accessed using a diode laser and the technique of saturated-absorption spectroscopy in hot Li vapor. The interval is measured by locking an acousto-optic modulator to the frequency difference between the two hyperfine peaks. The measured interval of 92.040(6) MHz is consistent with an earlier measurement reported by us using an atomic-beam spectrometer Das and Natarajan, J. Phys. B 41, 035001 (2008)]. The interval yields the magnetic dipole constant in the P-1/2 state as A = 46.047(3), which is discrepant from theoretical calculations by > 80 kHz.

XANES in the K-edge of copper in the systems CuO, Cu(OH)2, La2CuO4, Cu3AsO4 and CuOHF have been investigated and transitions have been assigned to the observed structures. The measurements have been used for calculating the first coordination bond distance in the above systems. It is observed that the values so determined agree fairly well with crystallographic values.

In the present work the integral diffusion coefficients are estimated by using the diaphragm cell technique. The diffusion coefficients are measured at various compositions for two sets binary systems: one of cyclohexane and n-paraffinic alcohols and the other of methylcyclohexane and n-paraffinic alcohols. The alcohols used are seven members of homologous series of n-paraffinic alcohols from ethanol to octanol. The maximum possible error in the experimental diffusion coefficient could be 8% for both the cyclohexane-n-alkyl alcohol system and methylcyclohexane-n-alkyl alcohol system. A correlation for each of the two sets of binary systems is given. The maximum deviation in the correlations was less than 6.5 and 3.5% for cyclohexane-n-alkyl alcohols and methylcyclohexane-n-alkyl alcohols, respectively.

X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy as well as x-ray absorption spectroscopy have been employed to investigate transition metal oxide perovskites of the general formula ABOs (A=La or rare-earth ion, B=trivalent transition metalion). Systematics in the core levels and in the valence bands in the series of LaBOa compounds have been discussed. Lanthanum chemical shifts in the x-ray absorption spectra in this series show interesting trends. Photoelectron spectra of the solid solutions, LaNil_x Coxes, LaNix_x FexO8 and LaFel_x Coxes show that the rigid band model is applicable to these systems. It is shown that x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy can be employed to identify multiple oxidation states of transition metal ions in oxide perovskites.

The X-ray LIII absorption-edge structure of rhenium in Cs2[ReCl6] has been measured with a bent-crystal X-ray spectrograph. An analysis in terms of molecular-orbital (m.o.) theory has been attempted. The energies of the m.o. levels, crystal-field splitting parameter, effective magnetic moment, magnetic susceptibility, and Landég parameter have been determined from this analysis. An estimate of the Re–Cl bond length has also been made.

The mutual diffusion coefficients for binary liquid systems of benzene-n-alkyl alcohol at various compositions have been determined by the diaphragm cell method at 28-degrees-C. The alcohols used were the members of n-paraffinic alcohols ranging from C1 to C8. The maximum possible experimental error is 14%. The data were fitted with a generalized correlation, giving the deviation from the experimental data to within 2.75%, on average.

We present the x-ray absorption data at the oxygen K-edge using total yield technique for Gd1−xPrxba2Cu3O7 (x= 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0). The data clearly to oxygen that the holes doped in the GdBa2Cu3O7 due to oxygen composition are not removed by Pr doping even for the x = 1.0 sample, suggesting that Pr is predominantly in the formally trivalent state. However, the data also clearly indicate the evidence of hybridization effects between the Pr3+ and the adjacent CuO2 layers. This is suggested to be responsible for the progressive suppression of Tc and the metallicity with Pr doping in these systems.

Chemical shifts of K absorption discontinuities, Delta E, of several manganese, iron and cobalt oxides with the metal in the formal oxidation states between +2 and +4, have been measured. These data, together with data in the literature on other compounds of these metals, can be fitted into the expression Delta E=aq+bq2, where q is the effective atomic charge on the metal. Theoretical considerations also support this functional relationship between Delta E and q.

We report the absorption spectra, oscillator strengths, ground state and excited state dipole moments, and molecular second order polarizability coefficients (βCT) due to donor—acceptor charge transfer in four trisubstituted ethylenes, namely 1,1-bisdimethylamino-2-nitroethylene, 1,1-bispyrolidino-2-nitroethylene, 1,1-bispiperidino-2-nitroethylene and 1,1-bismorpholino-2-nitroethylene. The results are compared with that of trans-N,N-dimethylamino-nitroethylene, which has a large βCT. The powder second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of all these molecules is also measured and only 1,1-bispiperidino-2-nitroethylene is found to possess an efficiency of 20% of that of urea under the same conditions. The SHG efficiency of this compound and deficiency in the other molecules in the powdered state is discussed in terms of their arrangements in the unit cell. The crystal structure of the active molecule is also presented and the structure—property relationship is critically examined in all these molecules.
