We report interesting anomalies in the temperature dependent Raman spectra of FeSe0.82 measured from 3 K to 300 K in the spectral range from 60 to 1800 cm(-1) and determine their origin using complementary first-principles density functional calculations. A phonon mode near 100 cm-1 exhibits a sharp increase by similar to 5% in the frequency below a temperature T-s (similar to 100 K) attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling and onset of short-range antiferromagnetic order. In addition, two high frequency modes are observed at 1350 cm-1 and 1600 cm-1, attributed to electronic Raman scattering from (x(2)-y(2)) to xz/yz d-orbitals of Fe. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, an attempt is made to study the influence of external light waves on the thermoelectric power under strong magnetic field (TPSM) in ultrathin films (UFs), quantum wires (QWs) and quantum dots (QDs) of optoelectronic materials whose unperturbed dispersion relation of the conduction electrons are defined by three and two band models of Kane together with parabolic energy bands on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion laws in each case. We have plotted the TPSM as functions of film thickness, electron concentration, light intensity and wavelength for UFs, QWs and ODs of InSb, GaAs, Hg1-xCdxTe and In1-xGaxAsyP1-y respectively. It appears from the figures that for UFs, the TPSM increases with increasing thickness in quantum steps, decreases with increasing electron degeneracy exhibiting entirely different types of oscillations and changes with both light intensity and wavelength and these two latter types of plots are the direct signature of light waves on opto-TPSM. For QWs, the opto-TPSM exhibits rectangular oscillations with increasing thickness and shows enhanced spiky oscillations with electron concentration per unit length. For QDs, the opto-TPSM increases with increasing film thickness exhibiting trapezoidal variations which occurs during quantum jumps and the length and breadth of the trapezoids are totally dependent on energy band constants. Under the condition of non-degeneracy, the results of opto-TPSM gets simplified into the well-known form of classical TPSM equation which the function of three constants only and being invariant of the signature of band structure.

A correlation of the infrared spectra of thiocarbonyl derivatives based on the literature data has been carried out. Assignments have also been made in some new systems. Since simple alkyl thioketones are unstable, we have prepared thiofenchone in order to obtain a reference C=S stretching frequency. The C=S stretching frequency in thiofenchone has been found around 1180 cm−1 which is in fair agreement with the value calculated for thioformaldehyde. In the case of the thiocarbonyl derivatives where the C=S group is linked to elements other than nitrogen, the stretching frequency is generally found in the region 1025–1225 cm−1. Strong vibrational coupling is operative in the case of the nitrogen containing thiocarbonyl derivatives and three bands seem to consistently appear in the regions 1395–1570 cm−1, 1260–1420 cm−1, 940–1140 cm−1 due to the mixed vibrations. These bands, which may be tentatively designated as the “-N-C=S I, II and III bands”, could be useful in qualitative analysis.

The propagation of a shock wave, originating in a stellar interior, is considered when it approaches the surface of the star and assumes a self-similar character, "forgetting" its initial conditions. The flow behind the shock is assumed to be spatially isothermal rather than adiabatic to simulate the conditions of large radiative transfer near the stellar surface. The adiabatic and isothermal flows behind such a shock are compared. The exact shock-propagation laws, obtained by solving the equations in similarity variables, for different values of the parameter δ in the undisturbed density law, ρ0 ∝ xδ, and γ, the ratio of specific heats, are compared with the approximate values calculated by Whitham's characteristic rule and the two show a generally good agreement.

Multilayers of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN)-PbTiO3 (PT) were deposited through pulsed laser ablation deposition with different periodicities (d=10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 nm) for a constant total thickness of the film. The presence of superlattice reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern clearly showed the superlattice behavior of the fabricated structures over a periodicity range of 20-50 nm. Polarization hysteresis and the capacitance-voltage characteristics of these films show clear size dependent ferroelectric and antiferroelectric (AFE) characteristics. Presence of long-range coupling and strain in multilayers with lower periodicity (similar to 10 nm) exhibited a clear ferroelectric behavior similar to a solid solution of PMN and PT. Multilayers with higher periodicities (20-50 nm) exhibited antiferroelectric behavior, which could be understood from the energy arguments. On further increase of periodicity, they again exhibit ferroelectric behavior. The polarization studies were carried out beyond the Curie temperature T-c of PMN to understand the interlayer interaction. The interaction is changed to a ferroelectric-paraelectric interlayer and tends to lose its antiferroelectric behavior. The behavior of remnant polarization P-r and dP(r)/dT with temperature clearly proves that the AFE coupling of these superlattices is due to the extrinsic interfacial coupling and not an intrinsic interaction as in a homogeneous conventional AFE material. The evidence of an averaged behavior at a periodicity of similar to 10 nm, and the behavior of individual materials at larger periodicities were further confirmed through dielectric phase transition studies. The presence of AFE interfacial coupling was insignificant over the dielectric phase transition of the multilayers.

A new dicationic dihydrogen complex of the type trans-[(dppe)(2)Ru(eta (2)-H-2)(PF(OMe)(2))]BF4](2) has been prepared and characterized. A large coupling of about 50 Hz between the H-2 and trans-phosphorus ligand in this complex has been observed.

The anomalous behaviour of conductivity below 4 K in polypyrrole can be attributed to the possibility of tunnel transport in disordered polaronic systems. The deviation from T-1/3 and T-1/4, depending on disorder, can be due to the onset of tunnel transport between localised states, apart from the hopping contribution to the conductivity. In intermediately and lightly doped polypyrrole films, the tunnel contribution to conductivity increases with decreasing temperature in a narrow temperature range, which is a feature of the presence of polarons taking part in the conduction mechanisms of disordered systems with strong electron-phonon coupling. The transition from hopping to tunneling dominated process can be observed either by the increase in conductivity in some cases or by the saturation of conductivity, depending crucially on the extent of disorder in the sample. In both cases the transition temperature is seen to increase with the reduction in the number of localised states.

We report the results of our non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) studies on single crystals of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl 2212) which reflect the occurrence of intrinsic Josephson coupling in these crystals. We have studied the magnetic field induced microwave absorption at various temperatures from 4.2K to T-c (similar to 104K) using a standard CW EPR spectrometer (H-dc parallel to c). We observe the appearance of a characteristic feature in the NRMA signals similar to the ones observed earlier by us in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi 2212) starting a few degrees below T-c, which on cooling passes through a maximum in intensity before disappearing at a further low temperature. This behaviour is attributed to the appearance, strengthening and disappearance of Josephson response consequent to the temperature dependence of the viscosity of the Josephson medium between the CuO2 superconducting sheets.

Partition of unity methods, such as the extended finite element method, allows discontinuities to be simulated independently of the mesh (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng. 1999; 45:601-620). This eliminates the need for the mesh to be aligned with the discontinuity or cumbersome re-meshing, as the discontinuity evolves. However, to compute the stiffness matrix of the elements intersected by the discontinuity, a subdivision of the elements into quadrature subcells aligned with the discontinuity is commonly adopted. In this paper, we use a simple integration technique, proposed for polygonal domains (Int. J. Nuttier Meth. Engng 2009; 80(1):103-134. DOI: 10.1002/nme.2589) to suppress the need for element subdivision. Numerical results presented for a few benchmark problems in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics and a multi-material problem show that the proposed method yields accurate results. Owing to its simplicity, the proposed integration technique can be easily integrated in any existing code. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Polymer nanocomposites containing different concentrations of Au nanoparticles have been investigated by small angle X-ray scattering and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The variation in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of Au nanoparticles with concentration is described by a scaling law. The variation in the plasmon band of ReO3 nanoparticles embedded in polymers also follows a similar scaling law. Sistance dependence of plasmon coupling in polymer composites f metal nanoparticles. A commercial acrylic fiber with 92% (w/w) acrylonitrile content was partially hydrolyzed converting a fraction of the nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups, to coat the fiber with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin, which was then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and further quaternized with ethyl chloroacetate to produce a novel strong-base anionic exchanger in the form of fiber. Designated as PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-), the fibrous sorbent was compared with a commercial bead-form resin Amberlite IRA-458(Cl-) in respect of sorption capacity, selectivity, and kinetics for removal of silver thiosulfate complexes from aqueous solutions. Though the saturation level of [Ag(S2O3)(2)](3-) on PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-) is considerably less than that on IRA-458(Cl-), the gel-coated fibrous sorbent exhibits, as compared to the bead-form sorbent, a significantly higher sorption selectivity for the silver thiosulfate complex in the presence of excess of other anions Such as S2O32-, SO42-, and Cl-, and a remarkably faster rate of both sorption and stripping. The initial uptake of the sorbate by the fibrous sorbent is nearly instantaneous, reaching up to similar to 80% of the saturation capacity within 10 s, as compared to only similar to 12% on the bead-form sorbent. The high initial rate of uptake fits a shell-core kinetic model for sorption on fiber of cylindrical geometry. With 4M HCl, the stripping of the sorbed silver complex from the fibrous sorbent is clean and nearly instantaneous, while, in contrast, a much slower rate of stripping on the bead-form sorbent leads to its fouling due to a slow decomposition of the silver thiosulfate complex in the acidic medium.

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 having monoclinic structure with distinct physical properties have been studied. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature T-c is found to be different for both the phases. The origin of such contrasting characteristics is assigned to the changes in the distance(s) and angle(s) between Mn-O-Co resulting from distortions observed from neutron diffraction studies. Investigations on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for such structural characteristics, which affects the exchange interaction. The difference in B-site ordering which is evident from the neutron diffraction is also responsible for the difference in T-c. Raman scattering suggests the presence of spin-phonon coupling for both the phases around the T-c. Electrical transport properties of both the phases have been investigated based on the lattice distortion.

Analytical expressions are found for the coupled wavenumbers in an infinite fluid-filled cylindrical shell using the asymptotic methods. These expressions are valid for any general circumferential order (n).The shallow shell theory (which is more accurate at higher frequencies)is used to model the cylinder. Initially, the in vacua shell is dealt with and asymptotic expressions are derived for the shell wavenumbers in the high-and the low-frequency regimes. Next, the fluid-filled shell is considered. Defining a relevant fluid-loading parameter p, we find solutions for the limiting cases of small and large p. Wherever relevant, a frequency scaling parameter along with some ingenuity is used to arrive at an elegant asymptotic expression. In all cases.Poisson's ratio v is used as an expansion variable. The asymptotic results are compared with numerical solutions of the dispersion equation and the dispersion relation obtained by using the more general Donnell-Mushtari shell theory (in vacuo and fluid-filled). A good match is obtained. Hence, the contribution of this work lies in the extension of the existing literature to include arbitrary circumferential orders(n). (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Considering the method of broad-band coupling a series resonant RLC load to a resistive source using a uniform quarter-wave transmission-line inverter, it is shown that the 3-dB bandwidth of the network insertion loss reckoned with respect to a 0-dB loss attains a maximum for a particular value of the center frequency insertion loss in the range 0-3 dB. The center frequency Ioss and the corresponding value of the maximum 3-dB bandwidth are calculated for various loads and the results graphically presented.

We present first-principles density-functional-theory-based calculations to determine the effects of the strength of on-site electron correlation, magnetic ordering, pressure and Se vacancies on phonon frequencies and electronic structure of FeSe1-x. The theoretical equilibrium structure (lattice parameters) of FeSe depends sensitively on the value of the Hubbard parameter U of on-site correlation and magnetic ordering. Our results suggest that there is a competition between different antiferromagnetic states due to comparable magnetic exchange couplings between first- and second-neighbor Fe sites. As a result, a short range order of stripe antiferromagnetic type is shown to be relevant to the normal state of FeSe at low temperature. We show that there is a strong spin-phonon coupling in FeSe (comparable to its superconducting transition temperature) as reflected in large changes in the frequencies of certain phonons with different magnetic ordering, which is used to explain the observed hardening of a Raman-active phonon at temperatures (similar to 100 K) where magnetic ordering sets in. The symmetry of the stripe antiferromagnetic phase permits an induced stress with orthorhombic symmetry, leading to orthorhombic strain as a secondary order parameter at the temperature of magnetic ordering. The presence of Se vacancies in FeSe gives rise to a large peak in the density of states near the Fermi energy, which could enhance the superconducting transition temperature within the BCS-like picture.
