We report the synthesis of Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors by the facile nitrate-citrate gel combustion method. Powder XRD and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that these phosphors have a monophasic scheelite-type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). FESEM micrographs indicate the agglomerated spherical particles. FTIR spectra showed four stretching and bending vibrational modes (2A(u) and 2E(u)). UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy illustrated that the optical band gap energy (E-g) values increase with increase in Eu3+ concentration. The host SrMoO4 phosphor exhibited an intense blue emission under UV excitation (368 nm). The Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors revealed characteristic luminescence due to Eu3+ ion corresponding to D-5(1) -> F-7(J) (J = 1,2) and D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 1,2,3,4) transitions upon 465 nm excitation. The electric dipole transition located at 615 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 592 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and radiative properties such as transition probabilities (A(T)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)) and branching ratio (beta) of Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. Based on the CIE chromaticity diagram, these phosphors can be promising materials for the development of blue and orange-red component in white LEDs. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Studies on the optical properties of InGaN alloy of relatively higher indium content are of potential interest to understand the effect of indium content on the optical band gap of epitaxial InGaN. We report the growth of self assembled non-polar high indium clusters of In0.55Ga0.45N over non-polar (11-20) a-plane In0.17Ga0.83N epilayer grown on a-plane (11-20) GaN/(1-102) r-plane sapphire substrate using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Such structures are potential candidates for high brightness LEDs emitting in longer wavelengths. The high resolution X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of two distinct compositions of InxGa1-xN alloys, which were further confirmed by photoluminescence studies. A possible mechanism for the formation of such structure was postulated which was supported with the results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The structure hence grown when investigated for photo-detecting properties, showed sensitivity to both infrared and ultraviolet radiations due to the different composition of InGaN region. The thermally evaporated As20Sb20S60 amorphous film of 800 nm thickness was subjected to light exposure for photo induced studies. The as-prepared and illuminated thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The optical band gap was reduced due to photo induced effects along with the increase in disorder. These optical properties changes are due to the change of homopolar bond densities. The core level peak shifting in XPS spectra and Raman shift supports the optical changes happening in the film due to light exposure.

Ho3+ (0.25-7 mol%) doped Sr2CeO4 nanophosphors were synthesized by solution combustion method using urea as fuel. The structural properties of the nanophosphors were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction studies (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. UV-Visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic techniques were used for analysing the optical properties of the nanoparticles. PXRD and TEM results revealed the formation of Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanocrystalline particles with orthorhombic crystal structure. From the UV-Vis studies the optical band gap energy found to decrease from 5.9 to 5.74 eV with increase in dopant concentration. The PL spectra exhibit the broad excitation band from 200 to 400 nm which concurs well with the commercial near UV LED. The PL spectra vary with the dopant content due to energy transfer from the host to the activator. In this present work we demonstrate that color tuning of phosphor can be achieved by merely varying the Ho3+ ions concentration. The CIE and CCT chromaticity coordinates suggests Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanophosphors may be potentially applicable as promising single - phased phosphors for lighting applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy growth of (10-10) m-InN/(10-10) m-GaN was carried out on bare (10-10) m-sapphire substrate. The high resolution X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the orientation of the as-grown films. Nonpolar InN layer was grown at different growth temperatures ranging from 390 degrees C to 440 degrees C and the FWHM of rocking curve revealed good quality film at low temperatures. An in-plane relationship was established for the hetrostructures using phi-scan and a perfect alignment was found for the epilayers. Change of morphology of the films grown at different temperatures was observed using an atomic force microscopy technique showing the smoothest film grown at 400 degrees C. InN optical band gap was found to be vary from 0.79-0.83 eV from absorption spectra. The blue-shift of absorption edge was found to be induced by excess background electron concentration. The influence of substitution of Bi atom instead of S atoms on the structural and optical properties of thin films of As40S60 are reported. The density is found to be increased with the addition Bi heavy metal into As2S3. The amorphous to polycrystalline structure of the bulk sample is observed for Bi more than 7%. The glass transition temperature is found to be decreased with addition of Bi. The absorption edge shifts to shorter wavelength, thereby decreasing optical band gap of BixAs(40)S(60-x) (x= 0,2 and 4% here) film. The optical parameter change is discussed from the stand point of chemical bonds formed in the films and related to the defect states produced due to incorporation of Bi atoms in place of chalcogenide S atoms.

Exciton-phonon coupling and nonradiative relaxation processes have been investigated in near-infrared (NIR) emitting ternary alloyed mercury cadmium telluride (CdHgTe) quantum dots. Organically capped CdHgTe nanocrystals of sizes varying from 2.5-4.2 nm have been synthesized where emission is in the NIR region of 650-855 nm. Temperature-dependent (15-300 K) photoluminescence (PL) and the decay dynamics of PL at 300 K have been studied to understand the photophysical properties. The PL decay kinetics shows the transition from triexponential to biexponential on increasing the size of the quantom dots (QDs), informing the change in the distribution of the emitting states. The energy gap is found to be following the Varshni relation with a temperature coefficient of 2.1-2.8 x 10(-4) eV K-1. The strength of the electron-phonon coupling, which is reflected in the Huang and Rhys factor S, is found in the range of 1.17-1.68 for QDs with a size of 2.5-4.2 nm. The integrated PL intensity is nearly constant until 50 K, and slowly decreases up to 140 K, beyond which it decreases at a faster rate. The mechanism for PL quenching with temperature is attributed to the presence of nonradiative relaxation channels, where the excited carriers are thermally stimulated to the surface defect/trap states. At temperatures of different region (<140 K and 140-300 K), traps of low (13-25 meV) and high (65-140 meV) activation energies seem to be controlling the quenching of the PL emission. The broadening of emission linewidth is found to due to exciton-acoustic phonon scattering and exciton-longitudinal optical (LO) phonon coupling. The exciton-acoustic phonon scattering coefficient is found to be enhanced up to 55 MU eV K-1 due to a stronger confinement effect. These findings give insight into understanding the photophysical properties of CdHgTe QDs and pave the way for their possible applications in the fields of NIR photodetectors and other optoelectronic devices.

Nanocrystalline powders of Ba1-xMgxZr0.1Ti0.9O3 (x = 0.025-0.1) were synthesized via citrate assisted sol-gel method. Interestingly, the one with x = 0.05 in the system Ba1-xMgxZr0.1Ti0.9O3 exhibited fairly good piezoelectric response aside from the other physical properties. The phase and structural confirmation of synthesized powder was established by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopic techniques. Two distinct Raman bands i.e., 303 and 723 cm(-1) characteristic of tetragonal phase were observed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to evaluate the phase decomposition of the as-synthesized Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 sample as a function of temperature. The average crystallite size associated with Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 was calculated using Scherrer formula based on the XRD data and was found to be 25 nm. However, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy studies revealed the average crystallite size to be in the range of 30-40 nm, respectively. Kubelka-Munk function was employed to determine the optical band gap of these nanocrystallites. A piezoelectric response of 26 pm/V was observed for Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 nanocrystal by Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) technique. Photoluminescence (PL) study carried out on these nanocrystals exhibited a blue emission (470 nm) at room temperature.

1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) studies have been carried out in the temperature range 100 K to 4 K, at two Larmor frequencies 11.4 and 23.3 MHz, in the mixed system of betaine phosphate and glycine phosphite (BPxGPI(1-x)), to study the effects of disorder on the proton group dynamics. Analysis of T1 data indicates the presence of a number of inequivalent methyl groups and a gradual transition from classical reorientations to quantum tunneling rotations. At lower temperatures, microstructural disorder in the local environments of the methyl groups, result in a distribution in the activation energy (Ea) and the torsional energy gap (E01). For certain values of x, the magnetisation recovery shows biexponential behaviour at lower temperatures.

Copper aluminum oxide films were prepared by direct current (dc) reactive magnetron sputtering under various substrate temperatures in the range of 303–648 K and systematically studied their physical properties. The physical properties of the films were strongly affected by the substrate temperature. The films formed at substrate temperatures <373 K were amorphous while those deposited at higher substrate temperatures (≥373 K) were polycrystalline in nature. The electrical properties of the films enhanced with substrate temperature due to the improved crystallinity. The Hall mobility of 9.4 cm2/V s and carrier concentration of 3.5 × 1017 cm−3 were obtained at the substrate temperature of 573 K. The optical band gap of the films decreased from 3.87 to 3.46 eV with the increase of substrate temperature from 373 to 573 K.

We show simultaneous p- and n-type carrier injection in a bilayer graphene channel by varying the longitudinal bias across the channel and the top-gate voltage. The top gate is applied electrochemically using solid polymer electrolyte and the gate capacitance is measured to be 1.5 microF cm(-2), a value about 125 times higher than the conventional SiO(2) back-gate capacitance. Unlike the single-layer graphene, the drain-source current does not saturate on varying the drain-source bias voltage. The energy gap opened between the valence and conduction bands using top- and back-gate geometry is estimated.

The light and heat induced changes in the optical band gap of Sb/As2S3 nanomultilayered chalcogenide film has been studied. Even though the changes in optical bandgap are attributed to the light and heat induced interdiffusion, the diffusional intermixing between the layers is rather different with light and heat. The observed difference in the light and heat induced interdiffusion is due to unequal diffusion coefficients of light and heat predicted by thermal spike model.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

We present here a theoretical approach to compute the molecular magnetic anisotropy parameters, D (M) and E (M) for single molecule magnets in any given spin eigenstate of exchange spin Hamiltonian. We first describe a hybrid constant M (S) valence bond (VB) technique of solving spin Hamiltonians employing full spatial and spin symmetry adaptation and we illustrate this technique by solving the exchange Hamiltonian of the Cu6Fe8 system. Treating the anisotropy Hamiltonian as perturbation, we compute the D (M)and E(M) values for various eigenstates of the exchange Hamiltonian. Since, the dipolar contribution to the magnetic anisotropy is negligibly small, we calculate the molecular anisotropy from the single-ion anisotropies of the metal centers. We have studied the variation of D (M) and E(M) by rotating the single-ion anisotropies in the case of Mn12Ac and Fe-8 SMMs in ground and few low-lying excited states of the exchange Hamiltonian. In both the systems, we find that the molecular anisotropy changes drastically when the single-ion anisotropies are rotated. While in Mn12Ac SMM D (M) values depend strongly on the spin of the eigenstate, it is almost independent of the spin of the eigenstate in Fe-8 SMM. We also find that the D (M)value is almost insensitive to the orientation of the anisotropy of the core Mn(IV) ions. The dependence of D (M) on the energy gap between the ground and the excited states in both the systems has also been studied by using different sets of exchange constants.
