p-aminobenzoate could be intercalated into the anionic clay, Ni3Zn2(OH)(8)(OAc)(2)center dot 2H(2)O at a high pH (similar to 10). When the pH was reduced to similar to 7 while washing colloidal dispersion due to delamination was observed. The development of partial positive charge on the amine end of the intercalated anion causes repulsion between the layers leading to delamination and colloidal dispersion of monolayers in water. The layers could be restacked from the colloid to form the parent solid either by increasing the pH or by evaporation.

The reactivity of Grignard reagents towards imines in the presence of catalytic and stoichiometric amounts of titanium alkoxides is reported.Alkylation, reduction, and coupling of imines take place. Whereas reductive coupling is the major reaction in stoichiometric reactions, alkylation is favored in catalytic reactions. Mechanistic studies clearly indicate that intermediates involved in the two reactions are different. Catalytic reactions involve a metal alkyl complex. This has been confirmed by reactions of deuterium-labeled substrates and different alkylating agents. Under the stoichiometric conditions, however, titanium olefin complexes are formed through reductive elimination, probably through a multinuclear intermediate.

Complexes of cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) with novel bidentate bibenzimidazoles, [M(L-L)Cl2], where L-L are methylenebis(1, 1prime-benzimidazole), methylenebis(2, 2prime-benzimidazole) and dimethylenebis(2, 2prime-benzimidazole) are described and characterized by different physical measurements. The four coordinate complexes have distorted tetrahedral or square coplanar structures. The bridging entity between the two donor groups apparently influences the ligand field strength and the ligands occupy a higher position than that of benzimidazole in the spectrochemical series.

An electron-beam melting and centrifugal splat-quenching technique for the production of microflakes of Ti-6A1-4V (wt%) alloy quenched at an average cooling rate of about 105 K sec–1 is described. The effect of substrate angle on the shape, size, microstructure and average cooling rate of the flakes of major sieve fractions is discussed. Morphologies of particles of minor sieve fractions are dealt with briefly.

This paper describes a theoretical model for the growth of titanium oxide by thermal oxidation of titanium. It is shown that this model can explain the formation of layers of different oxides of titanium and the changes in these layers with variations in the conditions of oxidation. Some experimental X-ray diffraction results which support the model are also given.

A novel chelate exchange reaction, leading to the formation of a series of N-alkyl substituent dependent mixed ligand isomeric complexes of the type Ni(R-AB)(AC') and Ni(R-AC)(AB') (Figure 1) are discussed. Here, AB and AC denote two different N-bonded isonitroso-β-keto-imino ligand moieties, while AB' and AC' are the corresponding O-bonded ligand moieties and R is an N-alkyl substituent. The isomeric complexes are suggested to be monomeric, neutral and diamagnetic with an asymmetric square planar geometry. The bonding isomerism of the isonitroso group in these complexes is discussed on the basis of the infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectral studies. A probable mechanism for the preparative route is also proposed.

The ternary metal nucleotide complexes [Ni(en)1.3(H2O)1.4(H2O)2][Ni(5?-dGMP)2(en)0.7-(H2O)0.6(H2O)2]·7H2O (1) and [Ni(en)2(H2O)2][Ni(5?-GMP)2(H2O)4]·6H2O (2)(en = ethylenediamine, 5?-dGMP = 2?-deoxyguanosine 5?-monophosphate, 5?-GMP = guanosine 5?-monophosphate) have been prepared and their structures analyzed by X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystallise in the space group C2221 with a= 8.810(1), b= 25.090(4), c= 21.084(1)Å, and Z= 4 for (1) and a= 8.730(1), b= 25.691(4), c= 21.313(5)Å, and Z= 4 for (2). The structures were deduced from the analogous CoIII complexes and refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to final R values of 0.087 and 0.131 for 1 211 and 954 reflections for (1) and (2) respectively. An interesting feature of the deoxyribonucleotide complex (1) is that en is not totally labilized from the metal centre on nucleotide co-ordination, as observed in corresponding ribonucleotide complexes. Apart from extensive intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding, the structures are stabilized by significant intracomplex basebase and basesugar interactions. The nucleotides in both complexes have an anti base, C(2?)-endo sugar pucker, and gauchegauche conformation about the C(4?)C(5?) bond.

EXAFS studies of Ni/Nb20, and Ni/Ti02 catalysts reduced at 773 K show evidence for the presence of a short Ni-Nb (Ti) and a long Ni-Nb (Ti) bond. The results provide evidence for considerable structural reorganization of the support in the vicinity of the Ni particles.

The C-nitrosation of bivalent quadridentate β-imino ketone complexes of nickel(II), copper(II), and palladium(II), with nitrosating reagents has been investigated. The chemical analysis and spectroscopic results reveal that one of the α-CH groups of the coordinated lignad undergoes selective nitrosation forming mono(hydroxyimino) derivative. The hydroxyimino group introduced coordinates through either N- or O- atom to metal(II) by dislodging the carbonyl group already coordinated. This gives rise to two linkage isomers, one with N-bonded and the other with O-bonded hydroxyimino group in the case of nickel(II) (except for 1d) and palladium(II), and a single isomer with O-bonded hydroxyimino group in copper(II) complexes. The isomers obtained from 1b and 1i have been separated by column chromatography. In chloroform each of the isomers of nickel(II) isomerizes to give an equilibrium mixture of two isomers, but not those of copper(II) and palladium(II).

Nickel zinc ferrites have been very widely used in the high‐frequency applications. In our present study we have prepared Ni1−x Znx Fe2O4 (0≤x≤1) using novel hydrazinium metal hydrazinecarboxylate precursors. High densities (∼99%) have been obtained for all the ferrites sintered at relatively low temperatures, 1100 °C, in comparison with the conventional method (≥1200 °C). The variation of magnetic properties like magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and permeability with zinc concentration have been studied.

Electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni films were processed with different levels of S, to evaluate the role of S on superplasticity. All the materials exhibited high strain rate superplasticity at a relatively low temperature of 777 K. Microstructural characterization revealed that the S was converted to a Ni3S2 phase which melts at 908 K; no S could be detected at grain boundaries. There was no consistent variation in ductility with S content. Superplasticity was associated with a strain rate sensitivity of similar to 0.8 and an inverse grain size exponent of similar to 1 both of which are unusual observations in superplastic flow of metals. Based on the detailed experiments and analysis, it is concluded that superplasticity in nano-Ni is related to an interface controlled diffusion creep process, and it is not related to the presence of S at grain boundaries or a liquid phase at grain boundaries. The excellent metal support interaction between palladium (Pd) and titanium nitride (TiN) is exploited in designing an efficient anode material. Pd-TN, that could be useful for direct ethanol fuel cell in alkaline media. The physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of the Pd-TiN/electrolyte interface reveals an efficient oxidation of ethanol coupled with excellent stability of the catalyst under electrochemical conditions. Characterization of the interface using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ FITR) shows the production CO2 at low overvoltages revealing an efficient cleaving of the C-C bond. The performance comparison of Pd supported on TiN (Pd-TiN) with that supported on carbon (Pd-C) clearly demonstrates the advantages of TiN support over carbon. A positive chemical shift of Pd (3d) binding energy confirms the existence of metal support interaction between pd and TiN, which in turn helps weaken the Pd-CO synergetic bonding interaction. The remarkable ability of TiN to accumulate -OH species on its surface coupled with the strong adhesion of Pd makes TiN an active support material for electrocatalysts.
