Synthesis of Isoquinolines from Indanones-Total Synthesis of Illudinine

Schmidt reaction of 5-methoxy or 7-methoxyindan-1-ones or their derivatives results exclusively in isocarbostyrils which are converted into 6-methoxy or 8-methoxyisoquinolines in good yields. This strategy has been extended to the total synthesis of illudinine methyl ester (1b) starting from methyl 8-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-7-oxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-s-indacene-4-carboxylate (4).

Formal total synthesis of (+)-didemniserinolipid B

The formal total synthesis of (+)-didemniserinolipid B, a marine tunicate possessing a 6,8-dioxabicyclo3.2.1]octane framework, was accomplished starting from L-(+)-tartaric acid. The key transformations in the synthesis include the elaboration of a gamma-hydroxy-amide readily obtained by desymmetrization of tartaric acid bis-amide via the controlled addition of a Grignard reagent followed by stereoselective reduction of the resulting ketone. Stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-synargentolide A

Absorption, translocation and metabolism of fluchloralin in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and pigweed (Amaranthus viridis)

Root absorption and translocation of [C-14]fluchloralin were determined in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cv. TMV-2 and pigweed (Amaranthus viridis L.) grown in nutrient solution culture under greenhouse conditions. Root-applied fluchloralin toxicity to groundnut and pigweed was also examined. A growth reduction of 50% occurred in groundnut that received fluchloralin at a concentration of 9.0 mum. Root absorption was similar for both groundnut and pigweed at one day after application (DAA), but groundnut absorbed about twice the amount of fluchloralin during 4 and 8 days of continuous application, compared with pigweed. Groundnut absorbed 25% of the total applied fluchloralin after 8 days. Translocation to leaves from treated roots was low and roots of groundnut contained 80% of the total absorbed C-14, 8 DAA. Contrary to the observations in groundnut, transport from the roots and leaves following root application in pigweed was rapid: 1 and 8 DAA, leaves of pigweed contained 45 and 70% of the total absorbed C-14, respectively. Different patterns of fluchloralin metabolism were observed in pigweed and groundnut. Pigweed metabolized most of the fluchloralin absorbed by roots. The fluchloralin tolerance of pigweed could partially be accounted for by absorption, translocation and metabolism.

First total synthesis of (±)-myltayl-4(12)-ene and single-crystal X-ray structure of exo-12-normyltaylan-4-yl 4-nitrobenzoate

The total synthesis of the unusual sesquiterpene (+/-)-myltayl-4(12)-ene 3 starting from the readily available cyclogeraniol 5 and the single-crystal X-ray structure of the 4-nitrobenzoate 12 of the noralcohol 11 are described.

Synthesis based on cyclohexadienes. Part 15. Total synthesis of (±)-prezizaene, (±)-prezizanol and (±)-jinkohol II

A new methodology for the synthesis of the complex ring system tricyclo[6.2.1.0(1.5)]undecane. present in the zizaene group of sesquiterpenes, is described. Acid-catalysed rearrangement of the endo alcohol 20 afforded the enone 12, which was transformed stereoselectively into the key intermediate. (+/-)-norprezizanone 10. The features of the synthesis are the transformation of a bicycle[2.2.2] octane framework into a bicycle[3.2.1] octane system by an acid-catalysed rearrangement and a stereoselective conjugate addition of a methyl group on an alpha,beta-unsaturated keto ester at -100 degrees C. Norprezizanone was converted into the sesquiterpenes (+/-)-prezizanol 5 and(+/-)-prezizaene 4. The first total synthesis of (+/-)-jinkohol II 6 is also presented.

Total synthesis of (±)-allo-cedrol [Khusiol]

The first total synthesis of (+/-)-allo cedrol 1 is described from the ketone 11 which involves the Lewis acid catalysed rearrangement of the prezizaene analogue 8 as the key step.

Total synthesis of the novel sesquiterpenes of Eremophila georgei Diels

The first stereoselective total synthesis of the natural sesquiterpenes 4 and 5, having the tricyclo[6.2.1.0(1,5)]undecane skeleton with a bridgehead methyl group, is reported via the intermediate 9, which was obtained by the acid catalysed rearrangement of the alcohols 7 and 8.

Protection of adult but not newborn mice against lethal intracerebral challenge with Japanese encephalitis virus by adoptively transferred virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes: Requirement for L3T4(+) T cells

The protective ability of cytotoxic T cells (CTL) raised in vitro against Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was examined by adoptive transfer experiments. Adoptive transfer of anti-JEV effecters by intracerebral (i.c.) but not by intraperitoneal (i.p.) or intravenous (i.v.) routes protected adult BALB/c mice against lethal i.c. JEV challenge. In contrast to adult mice, adoptive transfer of anti-JEV effecters into newborn (4-day-old) and suckling (8-14-day-old) mice did not confer protection. However, virus-induced death was delayed in suckling mice compared to newborn mice upon adoptive transfer. The specific reasons for lack of protection in newborn mice are not clear but virus load was found to be higher in newborn mice brains compared to those of adults and virus clearance was observed only in adult mice brains but not in newborn mice brains upon adoptive transfer. Specific depletion of Lyt 2.2(+), L3T4(+) or Thy-1(+) T cell populations before adoptive transfer abrogated the protective ability of transferred effecters. However, when Lyt 2.2(+) cell-depleted and L3T4(+) cell-depleted effecters were mixed and transferred into adult mice the protective activity was retained, demonstrating that both Lyt 2.2(+) and L3T4(+) T cells are necessary to confer protection. Although the presence of L3T4(+) T cells in adoptively transferred effector populations enhanced virus-specific serum neutralizing antibodies, the presence of neutralizing antibodies alone without Lyt 2.2(+) cells was not sufficient to confer protection.
