Poly(methacrylonitrile peroxide) (PMNP) has been synthesized from methacrylonitrile by free radical initiated oxidative polymerization and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the alternating copolymer structure with labile peroxy bonds in the main chain. The extreme instability of PMNP was noted from FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal degradation studies by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry have revealed that PMNP degrades highly exothermically and the heat of degradation, 42.5 kcal mol−1, is of the same order as that reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. Mass spectral fragmentation pattern under electron impact (EI) condition has also been investigated. The mechanism of the primary exothermic degradation has been substantiated by thermochemical calculations. The chain dynamics of the polyperoxide chain has been studied by means of 13C spin–lattice relaxation times (T1) of the main chain as well as the side chain carbons. The temperature dependence of the spin–lattice relaxation times shows that the PMNP is more flexible compared to the analogous poly(styrene peroxide).

Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed. An elementary combinatorial Tanner graph construction for a family of near-regular low density parity check (LDPC) codes achieving high girth is presented. These codes are near regular in the sense that the degree of a left/right vertex is allowed to differ by at most one from the average. The construction yields in quadratic time complexity an asymptotic code family with provable lower bounds on the rate and the girth for a given choice of block length and average degree. The construction gives flexibility in the choice of design parameters of the code like rate, girth and average degree. Performance simulations of iterative decoding algorithm for the AWGN channel on codes designed using the method demonstrate that these codes perform better than regular PEG codes and MacKay codes of similar length for all values of Signal to noise ratio.

This work presents an electrochemical technique for the polymerization and copolymerization of thiophene derivatives like 7,9-dithiophene-2yl-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthalene-8-one and 3-hexylthiophene. The structural characterization of chemically synthesized monomers and electro-chemically synthesized polymers was carried out by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal characterizations indicate that copolymer has increased thermal stability than that of homopolymer. Morphological studies of the polymerized films carried out by scanning electron microscopy shows network structure of copolymer. Optical properties of the homopolymers and copolymer were studied by UV-visible spectrometer and it was observed that band gap of copolymer is less than the homopolymers. HOMO and LUMO levels, band gap values of the respective polymers were also calculated from the cyclic voltammetry technique with various scan rates. By the peak current obtained from various scan rates shows that all polymerization reactions are diffusion controlled process. Charge transfer resistances of polymers were determined using Nyquist plots. Conductivity of synthesized polymers shows higher conductivity for copolymer than homopolymers. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Janus structures have attracted a great deal of interest because of their fascinating properties and potential for applications. In this study, we demonstrate that hyperbranched polymers, bearing randomly placed docosyl (C22 alkyl segment) and PEG segments on their periphery, can readily reconfigure so as to segregate the alkyl and PEG segments, thereby generating Janus-type structures that we have termed Janus hybramers. DSC studies clearly reveal an endothermic transition that corresponds to the melting of the docosyl domains, while Langmuir isotherms demonstrate that these polymers form stable monolayers that appear to undergo a slight densification beyond a critical surface pressure; this suggested possible crystallization of the docosyl segments at the air-water interface. AFM studies of the transferred monolayers reveal various interesting aggregate morphologies at different surface pressures suggestive of island formation at the air-water interface; at the same time they also provided an estimate of the monolayer thickness. These Janus HBPs also form vesicles as evident from TEM and AFM studies; the AFM height of the deposited vesicles, as expected, was roughly 4 times that of the monolayer. SAXS studies revealed the formation of lamellar structures; the interlamellar spacing was largest when the relative mole fractions of docosyl and PEG segments were similar, but the spacing decreased when the mole fraction of either of these peripheral segments is substantially smaller; this suggested the possible presence of interdigitation within the domains of the minor component.

Mesoporous MnO2 samples with average pore-size in the range of 2-20 nm are synthesized in sonochemical method from KMnO4 by using a tri-block copolymer, namely, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (P123) as a soft template as well as a reducing agent. The MnO2 samples are found to be poorly crystalline. On increasing the amplitude of sonication, a change in the morphology of MnO2 from nanoparticles to nanorods and also change in porosity are observed. A high BET surface area of 245 m(2) g(-1) is achieved for MnO2 sample. The MnO2 samples are subjected to electrochemical capacitance studies by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling in 0.1 M aqueous Ca(NO3)(2) electrolyte. A maximum specific capacitance (SC) of 265 Fg(-1) is obtained for the MnO2 sample synthesized in sonochemical method using an amplitude of 30 mu m. The MnO2 samples also possess good electrochemical stability due to their favourable porous structure and high surface area. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Poorly crystalline mesoporous MnO2, which is suitable for supercapacitor studies, is synthesized from neutral KMnO4 aqueous solution by hydrothermal route. But it requires a high temperature (180 A degrees C) and also a long reaction time (24 h). Addition of a tri-block copolymer, namely, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (P123), which is generally used as a soft template for the synthesis of nano-structured porous materials, reduces the hydrothermal temperature to 140 A degrees C and also reaction time to 2 h. When the reaction time is increased, the product morphology changes from nanoparticles to nanorods with a concomitant decrease in BET surface area. Also, the product tends to attain crystallinity. The electrochemical capacitance properties of MnO2 synthesized under varied hydrothermal conditions are studied in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. A specific capacitance of 193 F g(-1) is obtained for the mesoporous MnO2 sample consisting of nanoparticle and nanorod mixed morphology synthesized in 6 h using P123 at 140 A degrees C.

Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA) and 1,6-hexane diol diacrylate (HDDA) at different weight ratios were synthesized. Temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) was used to determine whether the formation resulted in a copolymer or interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). These polymers are used as binders for microstereolithography (MSL) based ceramic microfabrication. The kinetics of thermal degradation of these polymers are important to optimize the debinding process for fabricating 3D shaped ceramic objects by MSL based rapid prototyping technique. Therefore, thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation of these IPNs have been studied by dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetry (TGA). Non-isothermal model-free kinetic methods have been adopted (isoconversional differential and KAS) to calculate the apparent activation energy (E a) as a function of conversion (α) in N 2 and air. The degradation of these polymers in N 2 atmosphere occurs via two mechanisms. Chain end scission plays a dominant role at lower temperature while the kinetics is governed by random chain scission at higher temperature. Oxidative degradation shows multiple degradation steps having higher activation energy than in N 2. Isothermal degradation was also carried out to predict the reaction model which is found to be decelerating. It was shown that the degradation of PTMPTA follows a contracting sphere reaction model in N 2. However, as the HDDA content increases in the IPNs, the degradation reaction follows Avrami-Erofeev model and diffusion governed mechanisms. The intermediate IPN compositions show both type of mechanism. Based on the above study, debinding strategy for MSL based microfabricated ceramic structure has been proposed. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Novel random copolymers containing dithienylcyclopentadienone, thiophene and benzothiadiazole were synthesized and photovoltaic properties of these materials were evaluated. Thermal, structural, optical and electrochemical characterization of the synthesized copolymers was carried out. These thermally stable copolymers are solution processable unlike the homopolymer. The absorption spectra indicated that with the incorporation of alkyl chains in the thiophene moiety, the onset of absorption increases and hence band gap decreases (1.47 eV to 1.41 eV). Bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated with the blend of copolymer and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the active material and device parameters were extracted. The copolymer consists of alkyl thiophene exhibit higher open circuit voltage than the copolymer consisting of thiophene moiety. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work demonstrates a novel strategy to synthesize orthogonally bio-engineered magnetonanohybrids (MNPs) through the design of versatile, biocompatible linkers whose structure includes: (i) a robust anchor to bind with metal-oxide surfaces; (ii) tailored surface groups to act as spacers and (iii) a general method to implement orthogonal functionalizations of the substrate via ``click chemistry''. Ligands that possess the synthetic generality of features (i)-(iii) are categorized as ``universal ligands''. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel, azido-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) silane that can easily self-assemble on MNPs through hetero-condensation between surface hydroxyl groups and the silane end of the ligand, and simultaneously provide multiple clickable sites for high density, chemoselective bio-conjugation. To establish the universal-ligand-strategy, we clicked alkyl-functionalized folate onto the surface of PEGylated MNPs. By further integrating a near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) marker (Alexa-Fluor 647) with MNPs, we demonstrated their folate-receptor mediated internalization inside cancer cells and subsequent translocation into lysosomes and mitochondria. Ex vivo NIRF imaging established that the azido-PEG-silane developed in course of the study can effectively reduce the sequestration of MNPs by macrophage organs (viz. liver and spleen). These folate-PEG-MNPs were not only stealth and noncytotoxic but their dual optical and magnetic properties aided in tracking their whereabouts through combined magnetic resonance and optical imaging. Together, these results provided a strong motivation for the future use of the ``universal ligand'' strategy towards development of ``smart'' nanohybrids for theragnostic applications.

Low density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a class of linear block codes that are decoded by running belief propagation (BP) algorithm or log-likelihood ratio belief propagation (LLR-BP) over the factor graph of the code. One of the disadvantages of LDPC codes is the onset of an error floor at high values of signal to noise ratio caused by trapping sets. In this paper, we propose a two stage decoder to deal with different types of trapping sets. Oscillating trapping sets are taken care by the first stage of the decoder and the elementary trapping sets are handled by the second stage of the decoder. Simulation results on the regular PEG (504,252,3,6) code and the irregular PEG (1024,518,15,8) code shows that the proposed two stage decoder performs significantly better than the standard decoder.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

A peripherally clickable hyperbranched polyester carrying numerous propargyl terminal groups was prepared by a simple melt transesterification polycondensation of a suitably designed AB(2) monomer; this clickable hyperscaffold was then transformed into a variety of different derivatives by using the Cu-catalyzed azide-yne click reaction. Functionalization of the periphery with equimolar quantities of mutually immiscible segments, such as hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon, and PEG, yielded frustrated molecular systems that readapt and form structures wherein the immiscible segments appear to self-segregate to generate either Janus structures (when two immiscible segments are present) or tripodal structures (when three immiscible segments are present). Evidence for such self-segregation was obtained from a variety of studies, such as differential scanning calorimetry, Langmuir isotherms, AFM imaging, and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements. Crystallization of one or more of the peripheral segments reinforced this self-segregation; the weight-fraction-normalized enthalpies of melting associated with the different domains revealed a competition between the segments to optimize their crystalline organization. When one or more of the segments are amorphous, the remaining segments crystallize more effectively and consequently exhibit a higher melting enthalpy. AFM images of monolayers, transferred from the Langmuir trough, revealed that the thickness matches the expected values; furthermore, contact angle measurements clearly demonstrated that the monolayer films are fairly hydrophobic, and in the case of the tripodal hybramers, the presence of domains of hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon appears to impart nanoscale chemical heterogeneity that is reflected in the strong hysteresis in the advancing and receding contact angles.

Nanoparticles are used for a number of biomedical applications. In this work we report the synthesis of folic acid (FA) modified polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles. The anticancer drug, paclitaxel, is attached to the folic acid modified polyethylene glycol functionalized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and the in vitro drug release is analyzed. The surface modification and functionalization is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV spectroscopy. The importance of the paper is the investigation of the release behavior of paclitaxel conjugated folic acid modified polyethylene glycol functionalized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. The results show an initial rapid release and then a sustained release. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermal transitions in the copolymer of 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated to understand its use in microstereolithography. The glass transition temperature and the effect of interaction on this transition process was investigated by means of temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). The heat capacities were determined and PHDDA rich phases showed lower heat capacity than PMMA rich phases. The frequency dependence of glass transitions were studied by varying the modulation period of TMDSC and confirmed by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Vogel Fulcher Tammann Hesse (VFTH) parameters of homo and copolymers have also been reported.
