The transient response of non-linear spring mass systems with Coulomb damping, when subjected to a step function is investigated. For a restricted class of non-linear spring characteristics, exact expressions are developed for (i) the first peak of the response curves, and (ii) the time taken to reach it. A simple, yet accurate linearization procedure is developed for obtaining the approximate time required to reach the first peak, when the spring characteristic is a general function of the displacement. The results are presented graphically in non-dimensional form.

An exact solution for the free vibration problem of non-linear cubic spring mass system with Coulomb damping is obtained during each half cycle, in terms of elliptic functions. An expression for the half cycle duration as a function of the mean amplitude during the half cycle is derived in terms of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. An approximate solution based on a direct linearization method is developed alongside this method, and excellent agreement is obtained between the results gained by this method and the exact results. © 1970 Academic Press Inc. Mass transfer coefficients have been determined for transfer into a highly viscous phase in a stirred tank involving high Schmidt numbers. The results have been used to compute mass transfer coefficients in the extraction of free fatty acids from oils using alcohol and show good agreement with experimental results

We propose in experimental method to study the instability of thin unsteady separation bubbles, i.e. of unsteady boundary layers with reverse flow. The unsteady boundary layer is created by controlled temporal and spatial variations of the velocity external to the boundary layer. We present results of the evolution of instability in different temporally varying flows in a shallow angle diffuser. Depending on the extent of reverse flow in the boundary we observe that instability can be spatially localised.

Accurate mass flow measurement is very important in various monitoring and control applications. This paper proposes a novel method of fluid flow measurement by compensating the pressure drop across the ends of measuring unit using a compensating pump. The pressure drop due to the flow is balanced by a feedback control loop. This is a null-deflection type of measurement. As the insertion of such a measuring unit does not affect the functioning of the systems, this is also a non-disruptive flow measurement method. The implementation and design of such a unit are discussed. The system is modeled and simulated using the bond graph technique and it is experimentally validated. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The unsteady laminar free convection boundary layer flows around two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies placed in an ambient fluid of infinite extent have been studied when the flow is driven by thermal buoyancy forces and buoyancy forces from species diffusion. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by both temperature and concentration at the wall which vary arbitrarily with time. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been performed for a circular cylinder and a sphere. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are strongly dependent on the variation of the wall temperature and concentration with time. Also the skin friction and heat transfer increase or decrease as the buoyancy forces from species diffusion assist and oppose, respectively, the thermal buoyancy force, whereas the mass transfer rate is higher for small values of the ratio of the buoyancy parameters than for large values. The local heat and mass transfer rates are maximum at the stagnation point and they decrease progressively with increase of the angular position from the stagnation point.

Traditionally, laminar separation bubbles have been characterised as being 'long' or 'short' on the basis of a two parameter 'bursting' criterion involving a pressure gradient parameter and Reynolds Number at separation. In the present work we suggest a refined bursting criterion, which takes into account not just the length of the bubble but also the maximum height of the bubble, thereby shedding some light on the less understood phenomenon of 'bursting' in laminar separation bubbles.

MNDO geometry optimizations have been carried out on a series of acyclic and cyclic unsymmetrically disubstituted carbonyl and thiocarbonyl compounds. The C=X unit shows a consistent and often sizeable tilt towards one of the substituents, following the order O > Snot, vert, similarN > C > B. Reference ab initio calculations and available experimental results support the MNDO results. The effect, which is particularly dramatic in small rings, is attributed primarily to favorable negative hyperconjugative interaction between the lone pair on X and a low lying adjacent σ* orbital. Such an interaction can lead to highly distorted structures, including perhaps to a planar molecule with an inverted sp2 carbon center.

A numerical solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations under similarity assumptions is obtained. The solution represents the three-dimensional unsteady fluid motion caused by the time-dependent stretching of a flat boundary. It has been shown that a self-similar solution exists when either the rate of stretching is decreasing with time or it is constant. Three different numerical techniques are applied and a comparison is made among them as well as with earlier results. Analysis is made for various situations like deceleration in stretching of the boundary, mass transfer at the surface, saddle and nodal point flows, and the effect of a magnetic field. Both the constant temperature and constant heat flux conditions at the wall have been studied.

This paper presents the results of a computational study of laminar axisymmetric plumes generated by the simultaneous diffusion of thermal energy and chemical species. Species concentrations are assumed small. The plume is treated as a boundary layer. Boussinesq approximations are incorporated and the governing conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and species are suitably non-dimensionalised. These equations are solved using one time-step-forward explicit finite-difference method. Upwind differencing is employed for convective terms. The results thus obtained are explained in terms of the basic physical mechanisms that govern these flows. They show many interesting aspects of the complex interaction of the two buoyant mechanisms.
