Conducting and semiconducting polymers are important materials in the development of printed, flexible, large-area electronics such as flat-panel displays and photovoltaic cells. There has been rapid progress in developing conjugated polymers with high transport mobility required for high-performance field-effect transistors (FETs), beginning(1) with mobilities around 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) to a recent report(2) of 1 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) for poly(2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno[3,2-b] thiophene) (PBTTT). Here, the electrical properties of PBTTT are studied at high charge densities both as the semiconductor layer in FETs and in electrochemically doped films to determine the transport mechanism. We show that data obtained using a wide range of parameters (temperature, gate-induced carrier density, source-drain voltage and doping level) scale onto the universal curve predicted for transport in the Luttinger liquid description of the one-dimensional `metal'.

Doping dependent current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were carried out on polypyrrole devices in metal-polymer-metal sandwich structure. Temperature dependent I-V measurements infer that space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) with exponential trap distribution is appropriate for the moderately doped samples, whereas trap-free SCLC is observed in lightly doped samples. Trap densities and energies are estimated, the effective mobility is calculated using the Poole-Frenkel model, and the mobility exhibits thermally activated behavior. Frequency dependent capacitance-voltage characteristics show a peak near zero bias voltage, which implies that these devices are symmetric with a negligible barrier height at the metal-polymer interface. Low frequency capacitance measurements have revealed a negative capacitance at higher voltages due to the processes associated with the injection and redistribution of space-charges. Oxygen storage/release (OSC) capacity is an important feature common to all three-way catalysts to combat harmful exhaust emissions. To understand the mechanism of improved OSC for doped CeO2, we undertook the structural investigation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2-TPR (temperature-programmed hydrogen reduction) and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations of transition-metal-, noble-metal-, and rare-earth (RE)-ion-substituted ceria. In this report, we present the relationship between the OSC and structural changes induced by the dopant ion in CeO2. Transition metal and noble metal ion substitution in ceria greatly enhances the reducibility of Ce1-xMxO2-delta (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ru), whereas rare-earth-ion-substituted Ce(1-x)A(x)O(2-delta) (A = La, Y) have very little effect in improving the OSC. Our simulated optimized structure shows deviation in cation oxygen bond length from ideal bond length of 2.34 angstrom (for CeO2). For example, our theoretical calculation for Ce28Mn4O62 structure shows that Mn-O bonds are in 4 + 2 coordination with average bond lengths of 2.0 and 3.06 angstrom respectively. Although the four short Mn-O bond lengths spans the bond distance region of Mn2O3, the other two Mn-O bonds are moved to longer distances. The dopant transition and noble metal ions also affects Ce coordination shell and results in the formation of longer Ce-O bonds as well. Thus longer cation oxygen bonds for both dopant and host ions results in enhanced synergistic reduction of the solid solution. With Pd ion substitution in Ce1-xMxO2-delta (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) further enhancement in OSC is observed in H-2-TPR. This effect is reflected in our model calculations by the presence of still longer bonds compared to the model without Pd ion doping. The synergistic effect is therefore due to enhanced reducibility of both dopant and host ion induced due to structural distortion of fluorite lattice in presence of dopant ion. For RE ions (RE = Y, La), our calculations show very little deviation of bonds lengths from ideal fluorite structure. The absence of longer Y-O/La-O and Ce-O bonds make the structure much less susceptible to reduction.

Ga1-xMnxSb crystals are grown with different Mn doping concentrations by the horizontal Bridgman method (x = 0 - 0.04). Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies are carried out in the temperature range 3-300 K. Optical absorption studies reveal that the inter-valence band transition from the spin-orbit split-off band to the light/heavy hole bands is dominant over the fundamental valence band to conduction band absorption. In higher doped crystals, the fundamental absorption peak is merged with the inter-valence band transition and could not be resolved. Photoluminescence measurements in heavily doped crystals reveal the band gap narrowing and band filling effects due to the Fermi level shifting into the valence band.

Anisotropic properties of the Bridgman grown layered semiconductor p-InTe were studied by analyzing the temperature dependence of electrical conductivity and Hall mobility parallel and perpendicular to the layer planes. The mobilities were μamalgamation or coproduct = 50–60 cm2V−1 sec−1 and μperpendicular = 10–15 cm2V−1sec−1 and varied as μ ≈ Tn where n = 1.43 due to impurity scattering. Pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition occurred at about 50 kbar. The pressure coefficient of resistance was 3 times larger in the direction perpendicular to the layer plane due to the difference between inter and intra-planar bonding.

We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. We report the soft-X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K-edge of La1-xSrxCoO3-δ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) series with experimentally determined δ values. We show that the doping of holes by replacing La3+ with Sr2+ induces states within the band gap of the insulating undoped compound for small x and these doped states have a very substantial oxygen 2p character. This indicates that the insulating compounds belong to the charge transfer insulator regime. With increasing Sr content, the doped states broaden into a band overlapping the top of the primarily oxygen p-derived band, leading to an insulator-metal transition at x ≥ 0.2.

We elucidate the relationship between effective mass and carrier concentration in an oxide semiconductor controlled by a double-doping mechanism. In this model oxide system, Sr1-xLaxTiO3-delta, we can tune the effective mass ranging from 6 to 20m(e) as a function of filling (carrier concentration) and the scattering mechanism, which are dependent on the chosen lanthanum-and oxygen-vacancy concentrations. The effective mass values were calculated from the Boltzmann transport equation using the measured transport properties of thin films of Sr1-xLaxTiO3-delta. We show that the effective mass decreases with carrier concentration in this large-band-gap, low-mobility oxide, and this behavior is contrary to the traditional high-mobility, small-effective-mass semiconductors.

The first fabrication of self-doped La1-xMnO3-delta films which are unique among the other La(1-x)M(x)MnO(3) (M = Ca, Ba and Pb) thin films showing giant magnetoresistance is reported. Ag-doped La0.7MnO3-delta films were grown on LaAlO3[100] substrates. These films show ferromagnetic and metal-insulator transition at 220 K and exhibit giant magnetoresistance (GMR) with Delta R/R(o) = 85% and Delta R/R(H) > 550%. Without silver addition these self-doped films are non-magnetic, Enhancement in GMR up to 8% has been observed in superlattices having alternate magnetic and non-magnetic La1-xMnO3-delta layers.

Red, blue and green emitting lamp phosphors such as EU(3+) doped Y2O3 (red phosphor), EU(2+) doped Ba0.64Al12O18.64, BaMgAl10O17 and BaMg2Al16O27 (blue phosphors) and Ce0.67Tb0.33MgAl11O19 and Eu2+, Mn2+ doped BaMgAl10O17 (green phosphors) have been prepared by the combustion of the corresponding metal nitrates (oxidizer) and oxalyl dihydrazide/urea/carbohydrazide (fuel) mixtures at 400 degrees-500 degrees C within 5 min. The formation of these phosphors has been confirmed by their characteristic powder X-ray diffraction patterns and fluorescence spectra. The phosphors showed characteristic emission bands at 611 nm (red emission), 430-450 nm (blue emission) and 515-540 nm (green emission). The fine-particle nature of the combustion derived phosphors has been investigated using powder density, particle size and BET surface area measurements.

A wide range of condensed matter systems traverse the metal-nonmetal transition. These include doped semiconductors, metal-ammonia solutions, metal clusters, metal alloys, transition metal oxides, and superconducting cuprates. Certain simple criteria, such as those due to Herzfeld and Mott, have been highly successful in explaining the metallicity of materials. In this article, we demonstrate the amazing effectiveness of these criteria and examine them in the light of recent experimental findings. We then discuss the Limitations in our understanding of the phenomenon of the metal-nonmetal transition.

Ca-doped manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 samples with x=0.2 and 0.4 were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) as a function of temperature and preparation method. The samples exhibit characteristic resistivity change across the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature whose shape and position depend on Ca-doping concentration and sample thermal treatment. EXAFS results evidenced an increase of nonthermal disorder at the MI transition temperature which is significantly correlated with the resistivity behavior.

The results of an X-ray reflectivity study of thick AlAs-AlGaAs and thin GeSi-Ge multilayers grown using metal-organic vapour-phase epitaxy and ion-beam sputtering deposition techniques, respectively, are presented. Asymmetry in interfaces is observed in both of these semiconductor multilayers. It is also observed that although the Si-on-Ge interface is sharp, an Si0.4Ge0.6 alloy is formed at the Ge-on-Si interface. In the case of the III-V semiconductor, the AlAs-on-AlGaAs interface shows much greater roughness than that observed in the AlGaAs-on-AlAs interface. For thin multilayers it is demonstrated that the compositional profile as a function of depth can be obtained directly from the X-ray reflectivity data.

Molecular wires of charge transfer molecules were formed by co-evaporating the 7 7 8 8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane [TCNQ] (acceptor) and Tetrathiafulvalene [TTF] (donor) molecules across prefabricated metal electrodes. Molecular wires of TTF TCNQ were also formed by evaporating single complex of TTF:TCNQ across prefabricated metal electrodes The prefabricated metal electrodes were made using electron beam lithography on SiO2 and glass cover slip substrates. Even though TTF: TCNQ wires grown from both co-evaporation and evaporation techniques show semiconductor like behavior in temperature dependence of resistance they show different activation energies due the difference in stoichiometry of TTF and TCNQ.

Ambient-condition Raman spectra were collected in the strongly correlated NiS(1-x)Se(x) pyrite (0 <= x <= 1.2). Two samples (x = 0 and x = 0.55) were studied as a function of pressure up to 10 GPa, and for the x = 0.55 sample the pressure dependence of the infrared reflectivity was also measured (0-10 GPa). This gave a complete picture of the optical response of that system on approaching the metallic state both by application of pressure and/or by Se alloying, which corresponds to a volume expansion. A peculiar nonmonotonic (V-shaped) volume dependence was found for the quasiparticle spectral weight of both pure and Se-doped compounds. In the x = 0.55 sample the vibrational frequencies of the chalcogen dimer show an anomalous volume dependence on entering the metallic phase. The abrupt softening observed, particularly significant for the Se-Se pair, indicates the relevant role of the softness of the Se-Se bond as previously suggested by theoretical calculations.
