A novel high sensitive fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensing technique using lasers locked to relative frequency reference is proposed and analyzed theoretically. Static strain on FBG independent of temperature can be measured by locking frequency of diode laser to the mid reflection frequency of matched reference FBG, which responds to temperature similar to that of the sensor FBG, but is immune to strain applied to the same. Difference between light intensities reflected from the sensor and reference FBGs (proportional to the difference between respective pass band gains at the diode laser frequency) is not only proportional to the relative strain between the sensor and reference FBGs but also independent of servo residual frequency errors. Usage of relative frequency reference avoids all complexities involved in the usage of absolute frequency reference, hence, making the system simple and economical. Theoretical limit for dynamic and static strain sensitivities considering all major noise contributions are of the order of 25 (p epsilon) / root Hz and 1.2 n epsilon / root Hz respectively.

Fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been widely used for number of sensing applications like temperature, pressure, acousto-ultrasonic, static and dynamic strain, refractive index change measurements and so on. Present work demonstrates the use of FBG sensors in in-situ measurement of vacuum process with simultaneous leak detection capability. Experiments were conducted in a bell jar vacuum chamber facilitated with conventional Pirani gauge for vacuum measurement. Three different experiments have been conducted to validate the performance of FBG sensor in monitoring vacuum creating process and air bleeding. The preliminary results of FBG sensors in vacuum monitoring have been compared with that of commercial Pirani gauge sensor. This novel technique offers a simple alternative to conventional method for real time monitoring of evacuation process. Proposed FBG based vacuum sensor has potential applications in vacuum systems involving hazardous environment such as chemical and gas plants, automobile industries, aeronautical establishments and leak monitoring in process industries, where the electrical or MEMS based sensors are prone to explosion and corrosion.
Diastereospecific Coupling of Imines by Low-Valent Titanium: An Experimental and Computational Study
Resumo:
The reaction of phenylsilane (PhSiH3) and titanium(IV) isopropoxide Ti(OiPr)(4)] generates low-valent titanium alkoxides that reduce and reductively couple imines. The C-C coupling reaction is diastereospecific, with exclusive formation of the (+/-)-isomer. The yield is dependent on the concentration of titanium(IV) isopropoxide used. Using imines with varying electronic demand revealed that the coupling is most efficient for unsubstituted imines. The involvement of a trimeric titanium biradical species is invoked to explain the observed concentration dependence and diastereospecificity in the reaction. Multilayer ONIOM (''our own n-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics'') calculations were carried out on the plausible intermediates involved by using the Guassian 09 suite of programs. Formation of the trimeric biradical species leading to the formation of the (+/-)-isomer is more favored than formation of the trimeric biradical species, which leads to the meso-isomer. Similar calculations with dimeric intermediates do not predict the (+/-)-selectivity. Mass spectral analysis of the reaction mixture indicates the presence of a trimeric titanium alkoxide species.

The paper is based on a study to develop carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites with desirable thermal properties for applications at cryogenic temperatures. It analyzes the coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy composite materials and compares it with the properties of carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites in the temperature range 300 K to 125K. Urethane modified epoxy matrix system is used to make the composite specimens suitable for use even for temperatures as low as 20K. It is noted that the lay-up with 80% of carbon fibers in the total volume fraction of fibers oriented at 30 degrees and 20% of glass fibers oriented at 0 degrees yields near to zero coefficient of thermal expansion as the temperature is lowered from ambient to 125 K. Parkin (1978) suggested the velocity method based on the observation that the theoretical rate of consolidation and time factor plot on a log-log scale yields an initial slope of 1:2 up to 50% consolidation. A new method is proposed that is an improvement over Parkin's velocity method because it minimizes the problems encountered in using that method. The results obtained agree with the other methods in use.

This article addresses uncertainty effect on the health monitoring of a smart structure using control gain shifts as damage indicators. A finite element model of the smart composite plate with surface-bonded piezoelectric sensors and actuators is formulated using first-order shear deformation theory and a matrix crack model is integrated into the finite element model. A constant gain velocity/position feedback control algorithm is used to provide active damping to the structure. Numerical results show that the response of the structure is changed due to matrix cracks and this change can be compensated by actively tuning the feedback controller. This change in control gain can be used as a damage indicator for structural health monitoring. Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to study the effect of material uncertainty on the damage indicator by considering composite material properties and piezoelectric coefficients as independent random variables. It is found that the change in position feedback control gain is a robust damage indicator.

An angle invariance property based on Hertz's principle of particle dynamics is employed to facilitate the surface-ray tracing on nondevelopable hybrid quadric surfaces of revolution (h-QUASOR's). This property, when used in conjunction with a Geodesic Constant Method, yields analytical expressions for all the ray-parameters required in the UTD formulation. Differential geometrical considerations require that some of the ray-parameters (defined heuristically in the UTD for the canonical convex surfaces) be modified before the UTD can be applied to such hybrid surfaces. Mutual coupling results for finite-dimensional slots have been presented as an example on a satellite launch vehicle modeled by general paraboloid of revolution and right circular cylinder.

The variation of the viscosity as a function of the sequence distribution in an A-B random copolymer melt is determined. The parameters that characterize the random copolymer are the fraction of A monomers f, the parameter lambda which determines the correlation in the monomer identities along a chain and the Flory chi parameter chi(F) which determines the strength of the enthalpic repulsion between monomers of type A and B. For lambda>0, there is a greater probability of finding like monomers at adjacent positions along the chain, and for lambda<0 unlike monomers are more likely to be adjacent to each other. The traditional Markov model for the random copolymer melt is altered to remove ultraviolet divergences in the equations for the renormalized viscosity, and the phase diagram for the modified model has a binary fluid type transition for lambda>0 and does not exhibit a phase transition for lambda<0. A mode coupling analysis is used to determine the renormalization of the viscosity due to the dependence of the bare viscosity on the local concentration field. Due to the dissipative nature of the coupling. there are nonlinearities both in the transport equation and in the noise correlation. The concentration dependence of the transport coefficient presents additional difficulties in the formulation due to the Ito-Stratonovich dilemma, and there is some ambiguity about the choice of the concentration to be used while calculating the noise correlation. In the Appendix, it is shown using a diagrammatic perturbation analysis that the Ito prescription for the calculation of the transport coefficient, when coupled with a causal discretization scheme, provides a consistent formulation that satisfies stationarity and the fluctuation dissipation theorem. This functional integral formalism is used in the present analysis, and consistency is verified for the present problem as well. The upper critical dimension for this type of renormaliaation is 2, and so there is no divergence in the viscosity in the vicinity of a critical point. The results indicate that there is a systematic dependence of the viscosity on lambda and chi(F). The fluctuations tend to increase the viscosity for lambda<0, and decrease the viscosity for lambda>0, and an increase in chi(F) tends to decrease the viscosity. A powder neutron diffraction study was carried out on 0.8BiFeO(3)-0.2PbTiO(3) in the temperature range 27-1000 degrees C. The system exhibits magnetic transition at similar to 300 degrees C and a rhombohedral (R3c)-cubic (Pm3m) ferroelectric phase transition at similar to 650 degrees C. Anomalous variation in the lattice parameters and the octahedral tilt angle is observed across the magnetic transition temperature. In the magnetic phase, the c parameter is contracted and the octahedral tilt angle is slightly increased. The results suggest coupling between the spin, lattice and structural degrees of freedom. A study of the linear electro?optic effect in single crystals of the organic compound, 4?nitro4??methylbenzylidene aniline is reported. The reduced half?wave voltages have been found to have values 2.8, 1.3, and 1.1 kV at 632.8, 514.5, and 488.0 nm, respectively and the corresponding values of the largest linear electro?optic coefficient have been calculated. The thermal variation of the birefringence has also been investigated and the temperature variation of the refractive index difference is found to have the value, d?n/dT = 15.8 × 10?5 K?1.

It has been noted that at high energy the Ricci scalar is manifested in two different ways, as a matter field as well as a geometrical field (which is its usual nature even at low energy). Here, using the material aspect of the Ricci scalar, its interaction with Dirac spinors is considered in four-dimensional curved spacetime. We find that a large number of fermion-antifermion pairs can be produced by the exponential expansion of the early universe.

We combine multiple scattering and renormalization group methods to calculate the leading order dimensionless virial coefficient k(s) for the friction coefficient of dilute polymer solutions under conditions where the osmotic second virial coefficient vanishes (i.e., at the theta point T-theta). Our calculations are formulated in terms of coupled kinetic equations for the polymer and solvent, in which the polymers are modeled as continuous chains whose configurations evolve under the action of random forces in, the velocity field of the solvent. To lowest order in epsilon=4-d, we find that k(s) = 1.06. This result compares satisfactorily with existing experimental estimates of k(s), which are in the range 0.7-0.8. It is also in good agreement with other theoretical results on chains and suspensions at T-theta. Our calculated k(s) is also found to be identical to the leading order virial coefficient of the tracer friction coefficient at the theta point. We discuss possible reasons for the difficulties encountered when attempting to evaluate k(s) by extrapolating prior renormalization group calculations from semidilute concentrations to the infinitely dilute limit. We present a simplified and quantitative analysis of the Seebeck coefficient in degenerate bulk and quantum well materials whose conduction band electrons obey Kane's non-parabolic energy dispersion relation. We use k.p formalism to include the effect of the overlap function due to the band non-parabolicity in the Seebeck coefficient. We also address the key issues and the conditions in which the Seebeck coefficient in quantum wells should exhibit oscillatory dependency with the film thickness under the acoustic phonon and ionized impurity scattering. The effect of screening length in degenerate bulk and quantum wells has also been generalized for the determination of ionization scattering. The well-known expressions of the Seebeck coefficient in non-degenerate wide band gap materials for both bulk and quantum wells has been obtained as a special case and this provides an indirect proof of our generalized theoretical analysis.

An analytical surface-ray tracing has been carried out for the prolate ellipsoid of revolution using a novel geodesic constant method. This method yields closed form expressions for all the ray-geometric parameters required for the UTD mutual coupling calculations for the antennas located arbitrarily in three dimensions, on the ellipsoid of revolution.

Anomalous changes in the infrared intensity of the cobalt-oxygen stretching modes in the infrared spectrum of lanthanum cobaltate (LaCoO3) suggest vibronic coupling. This phenomenon has been studied by infrared vibrational spectroscopy both by temperature-induced changes of spin-state occupation and pressure-induced changes of the crystal field splitting 10Dq.
