We present a simplified theory of carrier backscattering coefficient in a twofold degenerate asymmetric bilayer graphene nanoribbon (BGN) under the application of a low static electric field. We show that for a highly asymmetric BGN(Delta = gamma), the density of states in the lower subband increases more that of the upper, in which Delta and gamma are the gap and the interlayer coupling constant, respectively. We also demonstrate that under the acoustic phonon scattering regime, the formation of two distinct sets of energy subbands signatures a quantized transmission coefficient as a function of ribbon width and provides an extremely low carrier reflection coefficient for a better Landauer conductance even at room temperature. The well-known result for the ballistic condition has been obtained as a special case of the present analysis under certain limiting conditions which forms an indirect validation of our theoretical formalism.

We report unipolar resistive switching in ultrathin films of chemically produced graphene (reduced graphene oxide) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The two-terminal devices with yield >99% are made at room temperature by forming continuous films of graphene of thickness similar to 20 nm on indium tin oxide coated glass electrode, followed by metal (Au or Al) deposition on the film. These memory devices are nonvolatile, rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 10(5) and switching times up to 10 mu s. The devices made of MWNT films are rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 400. The resistive switching mechanism is proposed to be nanogap formation and filamentary conduction paths. We formulate a low energy effective Hamiltonian to study superlattices in bilayer graphene (BLG) using a minimal model which supports quadratic band touching points. We show that a one dimensional (1D) periodic modulation of the chemical potential or the electric field perpendicular to the layers leads to the generation of zero-energy anisotropic massless Dirac fermions and finite energy Dirac points with tunable velocities. The electric field superlattice maps onto a coupled chain model comprised of ``topological'' edge modes. 2D superlattice modulations are shown to lead to gaps on the mini-Brillouin zone boundary but do not, for certain symmetries, gap out the quadratic band touching point. Such potential variations, induced by impurities and rippling in biased BLG, could lead to subgap modes which are argued to be relevant to understanding transport measurements.

We report a full self-consistent ab initio calculation of the conductance of a diarylethene-based molecular switch with two graphene electrodes. Our results show the contributions of the resonant states of the molecule, of the electrode density of states, and of graphene unique features, such as edge states. The conductivities are found to be significantly different for the two photochromic isomers at zero and finite applied bias. Further we point out the possibility of causing the switching by the application of a large potential difference between the two electrodes.

Electronic properties of graphene have been studied more extensively than its photonic applications, in spite of its exciting optical properties. Recent results on solar cells, light emitting diodes and photodetectors show its true potential in photonics and optoelectronics. Here, we have explored the use of reduced graphene oxide as a candidate for solution processed ultraviolet photodetectors. UV detection is demonstrated by reduced graphene oxide in terms of time resolved photocurrent as well as photoresponse. The responsivity of the detectors is found to be 0.12 A/W with an external quantum efficiency of 40%. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3640222]

The focus of this work is the evaluation and analysis of the state of dispersion of functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs), within different morphologies formed, in a model LCST blend (poly[(alpha-methylstyrene)-co-(acrylonitrile)]/poly(methyl-methacryla te), P alpha MSAN/PMMA). Blend compositions that are expected to yield droplet-matrix (85/15 P alpha MSAN/PMMA and 15/85 P alpha MSAN/PMMA, wt/wt) and co-continuous morphologies (60/40 P alpha MSAN/PMMA, wt/wt) upon phase separation have been combined with two types of CNTs; carboxylic acid functionalized (CNTCOOH) and polyethylene modified (CNTPE) up to 2 wt%. Thermally induced phase separation in the blends has been studied in-situ by rheology and dielectric (conductivity) spectroscopy in terms of morphological evolution and CNT percolation. The state of dispersion of CNTs has been evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results indicate that the final blend morphology and the surface functionalization of CNT are the main factors that govern percolation. In presence of either of the CNTs, 60/40 P alpha MSAN/PMMA blends yield a droplet-matrix morphology rather than co-continuous and do not show any percolation. On the other hand, both 85/15 P alpha MSAN/PMMA and 15/85 P alpha MSAN/PMMA blends containing CNTPEs show percolation in the rheological and electrical properties. Interestingly, the conductivity spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the 15/85 P alpha MSAN/PMMA blends with CNTPEs that show insulating properties at room temperature for the miscible blends reveal highly conducting properties in the phase separated blends (melt state) as a result of phase separation. By quenching this morphology, the conductivity can be retained in the blends even in the solid state. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The study of the curing behavior of an encapsulation material is very important and critical in terms of understanding the properties of the material. Differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry are two important tools that have been utilized to study curing reactions in polymeric systems. The present work deals with the curing of a mixture of hydride terminated polydimethylsiloxane, allyl functionalized alumina nanoparticles and Karstedt's catalyst. The real time curing behavior of the typical system was monitored non-isothermally by differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. The results obtained from the respective techniques reveal that there is a good correlation between these two techniques. A mechanism is proposed for the curing reaction of the polymer system based on the curing curves obtained by the above two studies. In addition, the swelling study and contact angle measurement of the two composites was performed to evaluate the extent of cross-linking and hydrophobicity. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Polyaniline functionalized with imidazole as strategically designed receptor group in its backbone was synthesized for copper binding. The synthesized polymer has been characterized using FTIR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The addition of copper (II) to the polymer distinctly changes the properties such as crystallinity, molecular weight, aggregation, and electronic properties. XRD, DLS, SEM, and four-point probe techniques have been used for study of these changes. It is observed that the secondary ion generated as a result of copper coordination results in the doping of the polyaniline backbone, which enhances the conductivity by one order of magnitude. Condensation of water droplets during rapid evaporation of a polymer solution, under humid conditions, has been known to generate uniformly porous polymer films. Similar porous films are also formed when a solution of the polymer in THF containing small amounts of water, is allowed to evaporate rapidly under air flow; this suggests that water droplets may be formed during the final stages of film formation. In the presence of added surfactants, the interface of water droplets could become lined with the surfactants and consequently the internal walls of the pores generated, upon removal of the water, could become decorated with the hydrophilic head groups of the surfactant molecules. In a series of carefully designed experiments, we have examined the effect of added surfactants, both anionic and cationic, on the formation of porous PMMA films; the films were prepared by evaporating a solution of the polymer in THF containing controlled amounts of aqueous surfactant solutions. We observed that the average size of the pores decreases with increasing surfactant concentration, while it increases with increasing amounts of added water. The size of the pores and their distribution were examined using AFM and IR imaging methods. Although IR imaging possessed inadequate resolution to confirm the presence of surfactants at the pore surface, exchange of the inorganic counterion, such as the sodium-ion of SDS, with suitable ionic organic dyes permitted the unequivocal demonstration of the presence of the surfactants at the interface by the use of confocal fluorescence microscopy.

A thermally stable and flexible composite has been synthesized by following a consecutive `two-step', solvent free route. Silicone polymer containing internal hydrides was used as a polymer matrix and mesoporous silica functionalized with allytrimethoxysiloxane was used as a filler material. In the second step, the composite preparation was carried out using the hydrosilylation reaction mediated by `Karastedt' platinum catalyst. The results of the studies suggest that the composites are thermally stable, hydrophobic and flexible and can be potentially used for encapsulating flexible electronic devices.

Nanocomposites of few-layer graphene with nanoparticles of CdSe and CdS have been synthesized by two different methods, one involving ultrasonication of a mixture of graphene and the chalcogenide nanoparticles, and another involving assembly at the organic-aqueous interface. The nanocomposites have been examined by electron microscopy, electronic absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies as well as Raman spectroscopy. Electron microscopy reveals that the nanoparticles are dispersed on the graphene surface. Raman spectra show the presence of definitive electronic interaction between the nanoparticles and graphene depending on the capping agent. Photoluminescence spectra are markedly influenced by the interaction of the nanoparticles with the graphene surface, depending on the capping agent.

The interaction of halogen molecules of varying electron affinity, such as iodine monochloride (ICl), bromine (Br(2)), iodine monobromide (IBr) and iodine (I(2)) with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene has been investigated in detail. Halogen doping of the two nanocarbons has been examined using Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with electronic absorption spectroscopy and extensive theoretical calculations. The halogen molecules, being electron withdrawing in nature, induce distinct changes in the electronic states of both the SWNTs and graphene, which manifests with a change in the spectroscopic signatures. Stiffening of the Raman G-bands of the nanocarbons upon treatment with the different halogen molecules and the emergence of new bands in the electronic absorption spectra, both point to the fact that the halogen molecules are involved in molecular charge-transfer with the nanocarbons. The experimental findings have been explained through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which suggest that the extent of charge-transfer depends on the electron affinities of the different halogens, which determines the overall spectroscopic properties. The magnitude of the molecular charge-transfer between the halogens and the nanocarbons generally varies in the order ICl > Br(2) > IBr > I(2), which is consistent with the expected order of electron affinities.

Reduced graphene oxide-lead dioxide composite is formed when EGO coated surface is electrochemically reduced along with lead ions in the solution. This composite has been shown to be an excellent material for low level detection of arsenic. Various functional groups present on EGO, in a wide pH range of 2-11, are responsible for the favorable interaction between metal ion and the modified electrode surface and subsequent trace level detection. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopic techniques confirm the formation of composite and its composition. Thin layer of lead dioxide along with reduced exfoliated graphene oxide has been shown to be responsible for the enhanced activity of the surface. The detection limit of arsenic is found to be 10 nM. This study opens up the possibility of using the composites for sensing applications and possibly simultaneous detection of arsenic and lead. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A cationic amphiphile, cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl pyridinium bromide (PY(+)-Chol), is able to efficiently disperse exfoliated graphene (GR) in water by the physical adsorption of PY(+)-Chol on the surface of GR to form stable, dark aqueous suspensions at room temperature. The GRPY(+)-Chol suspension can then be used to solubilize Tamoxifen Citrate (TmC), a breast cancer drug, in water. The resulting TmCGRPY(+)-Chol is stable for a long time without any precipitation. Fluorescence emission and UV absorption spectra indicate the existence of noncovalent interactions between TmC, GR, and PY(+)-Chol in these suspensions. Electron microscopy shows the existence of segregated GR sheets and TmC ribbons in the composite suspensions. Atomic force microscopy indicates the presence of extended structures of GRPY(+)-Chol, which grows wider in the presence of TmC. The slow time-dependent release of TmC is noticed in a reconstituted cell culture medium, a property useful as a drug carrier. TmCGRPY(+)-Chol selectively enhanced the cell death (apoptosis) of the transformed cancer cells compared to normal cells. This potency is found to be true for a wide range of transformed cancer cells viz. HeLa, A549, ras oncogene-transformed NIH3T3, HepG2, MDA-MB231, MCF-7, and HEK293T compared to the normal cell HEK293 in vitro. Confocal microscopy confirmed the high efficiency of TmCGRPY(+)-Chol in delivering the drug to the cells, compared to the suspensions devoid of GR.
