The title compound, C18H25FO9, exhibits a similar unit cell and packing to the alpha polymorph of axial 4a,8a-dihydroxyperhydronaphthalene-2,3,6,7-tetrayl tetraacetate. The carbonyl O atoms of two of the four acetate groups in the molecule are disordered over two sites with occupancy ratios of 0.59 (4):0.41 (4) and 0.57 (6):0.43 (6). Crystal packing is effected via intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, which link the tetraacetate molecules into tapes along the c axis.

he solvation of (2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)zinc(II)[Zn(obtpp)], in twelve different solvents results in large red shifts of the B and Q bands of the porphyrin accompanied by enhanced absorbance ratios of the Q bands. These observations are ascribed to the destabilisation of the highest occupied molecular orbital a2u of the porphyrin arising from a flow of charge from the axial ligand to the porphyrin ring through the zinc(II) ion. The binding constants of adducts of [Zn(obtpp)] with neutral bases have been found to be an order of magnitude greater than those observed for the corresponding adducts of (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)-zinc and vary in the order piperidine > imidazole > pyridine > 3-methylpyridine > pyridine-3-carbaldehyde. The enhanced binding constants and large spectral shifts are interpreted in terms of the electrophilicity of [Zn(obtpp)] induced by the electron-withdrawing bromine substituents in the porphyrin core. The structure of [Zn(obtpp)(PrCN)2] has been determined; it reveals six-co-ordinated zinc(II) with two long Zn–N distance [2.51(4), 2.59(3)Å]. The porphyrin is non-planar and displays a saddle-shaped conformation.

The presence of two (4n+2)-electron conjugated systems in perpendicular planes results in considerable aromatic stabilization. Despite having two fewer hydrogens, the 6 pi e-2 sigma e 3,5-dehydrophenyl cation (C6H3+, 1) is 32.7 (CCSD(T)/6-31G**) and 35.2 kcal/mol (RMP4sdtq/6-3iG*//RMP2(fu)/6-31G*) more stable than the phenyl cation (evaluated by an isodesmic reaction involving benzene and m-dehydrobenzene (4)). Cation 1, the global C6H3+ minimum, is 11.7,24.2, 11.8, and 30.4 kcal/mol lower in energy than the 2,6- (11) and 3,4-dehydrophenyl (12) cations as well as the open-chain isomers 13 and 14 (RMP4sdtq/6-31G*//RMP2(fu)/6-31G* + ZPE(RMP2(fu)/6-31G*)). The stability of 1 is increased hyperconjugatively by 2,4,6-trisilyl substitution. The double aromaticity of 1 is indicated by the computed magnetic susceptibility exaltations (IGLO/II//RMP2(fu)/6-31G*) of -5.2, -6.8, -15, and -23.2 relative to 11, 12, 13, and 14, respectively. Thus, 1 fulfills the geometric, energetic, and magnetic criteria of aromaticity. The double aromaticity of the D-6h cyclo[6]carbon is apparent from the same criteria

Pseudomonas cepacia CSV90 is able to utilize 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4-D) and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetate as sole sources of carbon and energy. Mutants of the strain CSV90 which had lost this ability appeared spontaneously on a nonselective medium. The wild-type strain harbored a 90-kb plasmid, pMAB1, whereas 2,4-D-negative mutants either lost the plasmid or had a 70-kb plasmid, pMAB2. The plasmid pMAB2 was found to have undergone a deletion Of a 20-kb fragment of pMAB1. The plasmid-free mutants regained the ability to degrade 2,4-D after introduction of purified pMAB1 by electroporation. Cloning in Escherichia coli of a 10-kb BamHI fragment from pMAB1, the region absent in pMAB2, resulted in the expression of the gene tfdC encoding 3,5-dichlorocatechol 1,2-dioxygenase. After subcloning, the tfdC gene was located in a 1.6-kb HindIII fragment. The nucleotide sequence of the tfdC gene and the restriction map of its contiguous region are identical to those of the well-characterized 2,4-D-degradative plasmid pJP4 of Alcaligenes eutrophus, whereas the overall restriction maps of the two plasmids are different. The N-terminal 44-amino-acid sequence of the enzyme purified from the strain CSV90 confirmed the reading frame in the DNA sequence for tfdC and indicated that the initiation codon GUG is read as methionine instead of valine.

Reaction of SbPh(2)Cl(3) (1 mol) with the silver salt of dicyclohexylphosphinic acid (2 mol) afforded {SbPh(2)Cl[O2P(C6H11)(2)]}O-2 1, a similar reaction with AgO2P(C8H15)(2) gave a product formulated as {SbPh(2)Cl[O2P(C8H15)(2)]}O-2 2. Similar reactions with silver carboxylates (1:3 stoichiometry) led to the crystalline derivatives [SbPh(2)(O(2)CR)(2)]O-2 (R = Ph 3, CHPh(2) 4, 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) 5, 2-MeC(6)H(4) 6 or 4-MeC(6)H(4) 7), whereas the 1:2 reaction afforded crystalline SbPh(2)Cl(O(2)CR)(2) (R = Ph 8, 2-MeC(6)H(4) 9 or 4-MeC(6)H(4) 10). Interconversion of the previously known compounds [SbPh(2)(O(2)CMe)(2)]O and Sb(4)Ph(8)O(6) . 3MeCO(2)H was achieved and established by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Compounds 1 and 3 were further characterized by X-ray diffraction; the antimony in 1 is six-co-ordinated with bridging phosphinates whereas in 3 it is seven-co-ordinated with chelating benzoates. Short Sb-O (oxo) distances (1.923 Angstrom) and near linearity at the bridging ox

The unusual magnetoresistance (MR) behavior in Sr2FeMoO6, recently termed as spin-valve-type MR (SVMR), presents several anomalies that are little understood so far. The difficulty in probing the origin of this phenomenon, arising from the magnetic property of only a small volume fraction of the ferromagnetic bulk, is circumvented in the present study by the use of ac susceptibility measurements that are sensitive to the slope rather than the magnitude of the magnetization. The present study unravels a spin-glass (SG) like surface layer around each soft ferromagnetic (FM) grain of Sr2FeMoO6. It is also observed that there is a very strong exchange coupling between the two, generating ``exchange bias'' effect, which consequently creates the ``valve'', responsible for the unusual MR effects. The facile method of solution combustion was used to synthesize gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6). The material was crystallized in a purely crystalline orthorhombic phase with sizes varying from 300 to 500 nm. Because the band gap was 2.51 eV, the degradation of wide variety of cationic and anionic dyes was investigated under solar radiation. Despite the low surface area (< 1 m(2)/g) of the synthesized material, gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6) showed high photocatalytic activity under solar radiation due to its electronic and morphological properties. Backbone alkylation has been shown to result in a dramatic reduction in the conformational space that is sterically accessible to a-amino acid residues in peptides. By extension, the presence of geminal dialkyl substituents at backbone atoms also restricts available conformational space for beta and ? residues. Five peptides containing the achiral beta 2,2-disubstituted beta-amino acid residue, 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (beta 2,2Ac6c), have been structurally characterized in crystals by X-ray diffraction. The tripeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-Aib-OMe (1) adopts a novel fold stabilized by two intramolecular H-bonds (C11 and C9) of opposite directionality. The tetrapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-OMe (2) and pentapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-Aib-OMe (3) form short stretches of a hybrid a beta C11 helix stabilized by two and three intramolecular H-bonds, respectively. The structure of the dipeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-OMe (5) does not reveal any intramolecular H-bond. The aggregation pattern in the crystal provides an example of an extended conformation of the beta 2,2Ac6c residue, forming a polar sheet like H-bond. The protected derivative Ac-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (4) adopts a locally folded gauche conformation about the C beta?Ca bonds (?=-55.7 degrees). Of the seven examples of beta 2,2Ac6c residues reported here, six adopt gauche conformations, a feature which promotes local folding when incorporated into peptides. A comparison between the conformational properties of beta 2,2Ac6c and beta 3,3Ac6c residues, in peptides, is presented. Backbone torsional parameters of H-bonded a beta/beta a turns are derived from the structures presented in this study and earlier reports.

A comprehensive analysis of the crystal packing and the energetic features of a series of four biologically active molecules belonging to the family of substituted 4-(benzylideneamino)-3-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-(4 H)-thione derivatives have been performed based on the molecular conformation and the supramolecular packing. This involves the formation of a short centrosymmetric R-2(2)(8) NH...S supramolecular synthon in the solid state, including the presence of CH...S, CH...O, CH...N, CH...F, CH...Cl, CF...FC, CCl...ClC, and CH...pi intermolecular interactions along with pp stacking to evaluate the role of noncovalent interactions in the crystal. The presence of such synthons has a substantial contribution toward the interaction energy (-18 to -20 kcal/mol) as obtained from the PIXEL calculation, wherein the Coulombic and polarization contribution are more significant than the dispersion contribution. The geometrical characteristics of such synthons favor short distance, and the population of related molecules having these geometries is rare as has been obtained from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Furthermore, their interaction energies have been compared with those present in our molecules in the solid state. The topological characteristics of the NH...S supramolecular synthon, in addition to related weak interactions, CH...N, CH...Cl, CF...FC, and CCl...ClC, have been estimated using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). In addition, an analysis of the Hirshfeld surface and associated fingerprint plots of these four molecules also have provided a platform for the evaluation of the contribution of different atom...atom contacts, which contribute toward the packing of the molecules in solids.

We report ab initio calculations for the band dispersions and total as well as partial densities of states for vacancy ordered, clustered spinels, GaMo4S8 and GaV4S8. Results are presented for the high temperature cubic phase for both compounds. Additionally, we discuss results of similar calculations for GaMo4S8 in an idealized cubic structure, as well as the nonmagnetic and the ferromagnetic states of the low temperature rhombohedral structure. Comparison of these results allows us to discuss the unusual aspects of the electronic structure of this interesting class of compounds, and provide estimates of the crystal-field and exchange splitting strengths.

The title molecule, C21H18O8, crystallizes in two crystal polymorphs, see also Nallasivam, Nethaji, Vembu & Jaswant [Acta Cryst. (2009), E65, o314-o315]. The molecules of both polymorphs differ by the conformation of the oxomethylacetate groups. The title molecules are rather planar compared to the molecules of the other polymorph. In the title molecule, one of the oxomethylacetate groups is disordered (occupancies of 0.6058/0.3942). The structures of both polymorphs are stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Due to the planarity of the title molecules and similar intermolecular interactions, the title molecules are more densely packed than those of the other polymorph.
