Structural, optical and electrical characteristics of transparent bismuth vanadate films deposited on indium tin oxide coated glass substrates

Bismuth vanadate (BVO) thin films were fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates using pulsed laser ablation technique and investigated their structural, optical and electrical properties. The use of the indium tin oxide coated glass substrate resulted in reducing the leakage current characteristics of crystalline BVO thin films. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the monophasic nature of the post annealed (500 A degrees C/1 h) films. The atomic force microscopy indicated the homogeneous distribution of crystallites in the as-deposited films. The as-deposited and the post annealed films were almost 90% transparent (380-900 nm) as confirmed by optical transmission studies. Dielectric constant of around 52 was attained accompanied by the low dielectric loss of 0.002 at 10 kHz for post annealed films. The leakage current of the post annealed BVO films on ITO coated glass substrates measured at room temperature was 8.1 x 10(-8) A at an applied electric field of 33 kV/cm, which was lower than that of the films with platinum and SrRuO3 as the bottom electrodes.

Proteomic Identification of Haptoglobin alpha 2 as a Glioblastoma Serum Biomarker: Implications in Cancer Cell Migration and Tumor Growth

Glioblastoma (GBM; grade IV astrocytoma) is the most malignant and common primary brain tumor in adults. Using combination of 2-DE and MALDI-TOF MS, we analyzed 14 GBM and 6 normal control sera and identified haptoglobin alpha 2 chain as an up-regulated serum protein in GBM patients. GBM-specific up-regulation was confirmed by ELISA based quantitation of haptoglobin (Hp) in the serum of 99 GBM patients as against lower grades (49 grade III/AA; 26 grade II/DA) and 26 normal individuals (p = 0.0001). Further validation using RT-qPCR on an independent set (n = 78) of tumor and normal brain (n = 4) samples and immunohistochemcial staining on a subset (n = 42) of above samples showed increasing levels of transcript and protein with tumor grade and were highest in GBM (p = < 0.0001 and < 0.0001, respectively). Overexpression of Hp either by stable integration of Hp cDNA or exogenous addition of purified Hp to immortalized astrocytes resulted in increased cell migration. RNAi-mediated silencing of Hp in glioma cells decreased cell migration. Further, we demonstrate that both human glioma and mouse melanoma cells overexpressing Hp showed increased tumor growth. Thus, we have identified haptoglobin as a GBM-specific serum marker with a role on glioma tumor growth and migration.

Non-Boussinesq conjugate natural convection in a vertical annulus

Non-Boussinesq conjugate natural convection in a vertical annulus with a centrally located vertical heat generating rod is studied numerically, taking into account variable transport properties. Results are presented for maximum solid temperatures, average Nusselt numbers and average pressure. Total synthesis of substituted (±)-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ols and their 9?-isomers

Total syntheses of (±)-1,4-dimethoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ol(11a), (±)-2,3-dimethoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ol (11b), and (±)-3-methoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)trien-17?-ol (11c), have been carried out starting from 4,7-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindan-1-one (1), 5,6-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindan-1-one (2), and 4?-methoxy-3-methylbut-2-enophenone (4), respectively. Generally, it is found that the intermediate 6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10),8-tetraen-17?-ols (10), on lithium�liquid ammonia reduction, yield a mixture of 8?,9?- and 8?,9?-trienols, (11) and (12) respectively, in the ratio 1 : 1. This is due to the comparable stabilities of these two isomers. However, the reduction carried out in presence of aniline affords a higher percentage of the 8?,9?-trienol (11). The assignment of configurations is made by chemical and 1H n.m.r. analysis. Catalytic hydrogenation of the tetraenols (10) is shown to proceed via initial isomerisation to the corresponding 6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10),9(11)-tetraen-17?-ols (26), followed by hydrogenation from the ?-side to give, exclusively, the 8?,9?-trienols (12).

Analysis of co-current hydraircooling of food products in bulk

A mathematical model is developed to describe the hydraircooling process when the water and air are flowing in the same direction. The governing equations for the simultaneous heat and mass transfer are solved using finite-difference numerical methods. The half cooling time of the food products is correlated as a function of the dimensionless process parameters. It is observed that a process time of approximately double the half cooling time will result in the food products attaining almost a steady state. The process times of the bulk hydraircooling process and the bulk air precooling process are compared.

2(4)-SEMA as a sensitive and offset compensated SLF sequence

Separated Local Field (SLF) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the determination of structure and dynamics of oriented systems such as membrane proteins oriented in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals. Of many SLF techniques available, Polarization Inversion Spin Exchange at Magic Angle (PISEMA) has found wide application due to its many favorable characteristics. However the pulse sequence suffers from its sensitivity to proton resonance frequency offset. Recently we have proposed a new sequence named 2(4)-SEMA (J. Chem. Phys. 132 (2010) 134301) that overcomes this problem of PISEMA. The present work demonstrates the advantage of 2(4)-SEMA as a highly sensitive SLF technique even for very large proton offset. 2(4)-SEMA has been designed for obtaining reliable dipolar couplings by switching the magic-angle spin-lock for protons over four quadrants as against the use of only two quadrants in PISEMA. It is observed that for on-resonance condition, 2(4)-SEMA gives rise to signal intensity comparable to or slightly higher than that from PISEMA. But under off-resonance conditions, intensities from 2(4)-SEMA are several fold higher than those from PISEMA. Comparison with another offset compensated pulse sequence, SAMPI4, also indicates a better intensity profile for 2(4)-SEMA. Experiments carried out on a single crystal of N-15 labeled N-acetyl-DL-valine and simulations have been used to study the relative performance of the pulse sequences considered. An automated thermal relaxation calorimeter for operation at low temperature (0.5 K10 K)

We describe an automated calorimeter for measurement of specific heat in the temperature range 10 K>T>0.5 K. It uses sample of moderate size (100–1000 mg), has a moderate precision and accuracy (2%–5%), is easy to operate and the measurements can be done quickly with He4 economy. The accuracy of this calorimeter was checked by measurement of specific heat of copper and that of aluminium near its superconducting transition temperature.

Conformational studies on beta-bend containing a cis peptide unit

Conformational studies have been carried out on the X-cis-Pro tripeptide system (a system of three linked peptide units, in the trans-cis-trans configuration) using energy minimization techniques. For X, residues Gly, L-Ala, D-Ala and L-Pro have been used. The energy minima have been classified into different groups based upon the conformational similarity. There are 15, 20, 18 and 6 minima that are possible for the four cases respectively and these fall into 11 different groups. A study of these minima shows that, (i) some minima contain hydrogen bonds - either 4-->1 or 1-->2 type, (ii) the low energy minima qualify themselves as bend conformations, (iii) cis' and trans' conformations are possible for the prolyl residue as also the C(gamma)-endo and C(gamma)-exo puckerings, and (iv) for Pro-cis-Pro, cis' at the first prolyl residue is ruled out, due to the high energy. The available crystal structure data on proteins and peptides, containing cis-Pro segment have been examined with a view to find the minima that occur in solid state. The data from protein show that they fall under two groups. The conformation at X in X-cis-Pro is near extended when it is a non-glycyl residue. In both peptides and proteins there exists a preference for trans' conformation at prolyl residue over cis' when X is a non-glycyl residue. The minima obtained can be useful in modelling studies.

Determination of the sign of the order parameter from MAS spectra of oriented molecules

The use of the intensities of the spinning sidebands in the magic-angle spinning spectra of oriented molecules is proposed for the determination of the signs of the order parameters. The method is demonstrated for benzene and chloroform oriented in nematic phases of liquid crystals. On the basis of the theoretical expressions derived for the various order sidebands, the applicability of the method for different experimental conditions is discussed.
