1. 1. An enzyme catalysing the conversion of α,β-dihydroxyisovalerate and α,β-dihydroxy-β-methylvalerate to α-ketoisovalerate and α-keto-β-methylvalerate has been partially purified from green gram (Phaseolus radiatus), and its characteristics studied. 2. 2. A natural inhibitor, heat stable and inorganic in nature, was observed in the crude extracts. 3. 3. The observed Km values for α-β-dihydroxyisovalerate and α,β-dihydroxy-β-methylvalerate were 2.4 · 10-3 M and 9 · 10-4 M, respectively. 4. 4. The enzyme required the presence of a divalent metal ion (Mg2+, Mn2+ or Fe2+) for maximal activity. Heavy metals like Ag+ and Hg2+ were inhibitory. 5. 5. The optimal activity was around pH 8.0 and the optimum temperature at 52°. The activation energy is found to be 12 600 cal/mole. 6. 6. The enzyme was inhibited by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, N-ethylmaleimide and sulphydryl compounds like cysteine, glutathione, 2-mercaptoethanol and 2,3-dimercaptopropanol. The inhibition by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate could not be reversed by any of the sulfhydryl compounds tested.

Following growth doping technique highly luminescent (quantum yield >50%) Mn-doped ZnS nanocrystals are synthesized via colloidal synthetictechnique. The dopant emission has been optimized with varying reaction parameters and found the ratio of Zn and S as well as the percentage of introduced dopant in the reaction mixture are key factors for controlling the intensity. The method is simple, hassle free, and can be scalable to gram level without hindering the quality of nanocrystals. These nanocrystals retain their emission during various ligand exchange processes and aqueous dispersion.

1. 1. The presence of an enzyme system in plants catalyzing the formation of α-acetolactate from pyruvate has been demonstrated; the system in green gram (Phaseolus radiatus) has been partially purified and its characteristics have been studied.2. Free acetaldehyde is formed as a product of the reaction and so the reaction is mainly diverted towards the formation of acetoin. 3. The system requires thiamine pyrophosphate and a divalent metal ion (Mn2+ or Mg2+) for maximum activity. The optimum pH is around 6.0 and the optimum temperature is 60°. 4. The system is very labile in absence of pyruvate, Mn2+ and DPT. 5. The Km values for pyruvate, Mn2+, Mg2+ and DPT are 3·10−2 M. 5·10−5 M, 2·10−5 M, and e·10−6 M respectively. The activation energy is 3540 cal/mole. 6. The enzyme is strongly inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate and the inhibition can be reversed partially by 2-mercaptoethanol, BAL or cysteine. Heavy metals, such as Hg2+ and Ag+, are inhibitory but l-valine does not inhibit the reaction.

The preparation of the enzyme hydrolysing FMN whose partial purification from green-gram extracts is described in the preceding paper, has been shown to possess phosphotransferase activity. The enzyme could transfer the phosphate group cleaved from FMN to acceptors like thiamine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine and nucleosides resulting in the formation of their corresponding phosphate esters and nucleotides. The properties of the enzyme hydrolysing FMN and the phosphotransferase activity of the preparation are compared.

For p x n complex orthogonal designs in k variables, where p is the number of channels uses and n is the number of transmit antennas, the maximal rate L of the design is asymptotically half as n increases. But, for such maximal rate codes, the decoding delay p increases exponentially. To control the delay, if we put the restriction that p = n, i.e., consider only the square designs, then, the rate decreases exponentially as n increases. This necessitates the study of the maximal rate of the designs with restrictions of the form p = n+1, p = n+2, p = n+3 etc. In this paper, we study the maximal rate of complex orthogonal designs with the restrictions p = n+1 and p = n+2. We derive upper and lower bounds for the maximal rate for p = n+1 and p = n+2. Also for the case of p = n+1, we show that if the orthogonal design admit only the variables, their negatives and multiples of these by root-1 and zeros as the entries of the matrix (other complex linear combinations are not allowed), then the maximal rate always equals the lower bound.

Background & objectives: The multiple drug resistance (MDR) is a serious health problem and major challenge to the global drug discovery programmes. Most of the genetic determinants that confer resistance to antibiotics are located on R-plasmids in bacteria. The present investigation was undertaken to investigate the ability of organic extract of the fruits of Helicteres isora to cure R-plasmids from certain clinical isolates. mMethods: Active fractions demonstrating antibacterial and antiplasmid activities were isolated from the acetone extracts of shade dried fruits of H. isora by bioassay guided fractionation. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotics and organic extracts was determined by agar dilution method. Plasmid curing activity of organic fractions was determined by evaluating the ability of bacterial colonies (pre treated with organic fraction for 18 h) to grow in the presence of antibiotics. The physical loss of plasmid DNA in the cured derivatives was further confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Results: The active fraction did not inhibit the growth of either the clinical isolates or the strains harbouring reference plasmids even at a concentration of 400 mu g/ml. However, the same fraction could cure plasmids from Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and E. coli (RP4) at curing efficiencies of 14, 26, 22 and 2 per cent respectively. The active fraction mediated plasmid curing resulted in the subsequent loss of antibiotic resistance encoded in the plasmids as revealed by antibiotic resistance profile of cured strains. The physical loss of plasmid was also confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Interpretation & conclusions: The active fraction of acetone extract of H. isora fruits cured R-plasmids from Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical isolates as well as reference strains. Such plasmid loss reversed the multiple antibiotic resistance in cured derivatives making them sensitive to low concentrations of antibiotics. Acetone fractions of H. isora may be a source to develop antiplasmid agents of natural origin to contain the development and spread of plasmid borne multiple antibiotic resistance.

Iron is a major pollutant released as a by-product during several industrial operations especially during acid mining of metal ores. In this paper, the use of Bengal gram husk (husk of channa dal, Cicer arientinum) in the biosorption of Fe(III) from aqueous solutions is discussed. Parameters like agitation time, adsorbent dosage and pH were studied at different Fe(Ill) concentrations. The adsorption data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity (q(max)) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 72.16 mg of Fe(III)/g of the biosorbent at an initial pH of 2.5. Desorption Studies were performed at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid showing that quantitative recovery of the metal ion is possible. The infrared spectra of the biomass before and after treatment with Fe(III), revealed that hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide bonds are involved in the uptake of Fe(III) ions.

Modern wireline and wireless communication devices are multimode and multifunctional communication devices. In order to support multiple standards on a single platform, it is necessary to develop a reconfigurable architecture that can provide the required flexibility and performance. The Channel decoder is one of the most compute intensive and essential elements of any communication system. Most of the standards require a reconfigurable Channel decoder that is capable of performing Viterbi decoding and Turbo decoding. Furthermore, the Channel decoder needs to support different configurations of Viterbi and Turbo decoders. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable Channel decoder that can be reconfigured for standards such as WCDMA, CDMA2000, IEEE802.11, DAB, DVB and GSM. Different parameters like code rate, constraint length, polynomials and truncation length can be configured to map any of the above mentioned standards. A multiprocessor approach has been followed to provide higher throughput and scalable power consumption in various configurations of the reconfigurable Viterbi decoder and Turbo decoder. We have proposed A Hybrid register exchange approach for multiprocessor architecture to minimize power consumption.

Stability analysis is carried out considering free lateral vibrations of simply supported composite skew plates that are subjected to both direct and shear in-plane forces. An oblique stress component representation is used, consistent with the skew-geometry of the plate. A double series, expressed in Chebyshev polynomials, is used here as the assumed deflection surface and Ritz method of solution is employed. Numerical results for different combinations of side ratios, skew angle, and in-plane loadings that act individually or in combination are obtained. In this method, the in-plane load parameter is varied until the fundamental frequency goes to zero. The value of the in-plane load then corresponds to a critical buckling load. Plots of frequency parameter versus in-plane loading are given for a few typical cases. Details of crossings and quasi degeneracies of these curves are presented.

Objective : The main objective of this work was to study the antipyretic and antibacterial activity of C. erectus (Buch.-Ham.) Verdcourt leaf extract in an experimental albino rat model. Materials and Methods : The methanol extract of C. erectus leaf (MECEL) was evaluated for its antipyretic potential on normal body temperature and Brewers yeast-induced pyrexia in albino rats model. While the antibacterial activity of MECEL against five Gram (-) and three Gram () bacterial strains and antimycotic activity was investigated against four fungi using agar disk diffusion and microdilution methods. Result : Yeast suspension (10 mL/kg b.w.) elevated rectal temperature after 19 h of subcutaneous injection. Oral administration of MECEL at 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w. showed significant reduction of normal rectal body temperature and yeast-provoked elevated temperature (38.8 0.2 and 37.6 0.4, respectively, at 2-3 h) in a dose-dependent manner, and the effect was comparable to that of the standard antipyretic drug-paracetamol (150 mg/kg b.w.). MECEL at 2 mg/disk showed broad spectrum of growth inhibition activity against both groups of bacteria. However, MECEL was not effective against the yeast strains tested in this study. Conclusion : This study revealed that the methanol extract of C. erectus exhibited significant antipyretic activity in the tested models and antibacterial activity as well, and may provide the scientific rationale for its popular use as antipyretic agent in Khamptiss folk medicines.

Salmonella, a Gram-negative facultative intracellular pathogen is capable of infecting vast array of hosts. The striking ability of Salmonella to overcome every hurdle encountered in the host proves that they are true survivors. In the host, Salmonella infects various cell types and needs to survive and replicate by countering the defense mechanism of the specific cell. In this review, we will summarize the recent insights into the cell biology of Salmonella infection. Here, we will focus on the findings that deal with the specific mechanism of various cell types to control Salmonella infection. Further, the survival strategies of the pathogen in response to the host immunity will also be discussed in detail. Better understanding of the mechanisms by which Salmonella evade the host defense system and establish pathogenesis will be critical in disease management. (C) 2010 Institut Pasteur. We compute the entropy and transport properties of water in the hydration layer of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine bilayer by using a recently developed theoretical scheme two-phase thermodynamic model, termed as 2PT method; S.-T. Lin et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 11792 (2003)] based on the translational and rotational velocity autocorrelation functions and their power spectra. The weights of translational and rotational power spectra shift from higher to lower frequency as one goes from the bilayer interface to the bulk. Water molecules near the bilayer head groups have substantially lower entropy (48.36 J/mol/K) than water molecules in the intermediate region (51.36 J/mol/K), which have again lower entropy than the molecules (60.52 J/mol/K) in bulk. Thus, the entropic contribution to the free energy change (T Delta S) of transferring an interface water molecule to the bulk is 3.65 kJ/mol and of transferring intermediate water to the bulk is 2.75 kJ/mol at 300 K, which is to be compared with 6.03 kJ/mol for melting of ice at 273 K. The translational diffusion of water in the vicinity of the head groups is found to be in a subdiffusive regime and the rotational diffusion constant increases going away from the interface. This behavior is supported by the slower reorientational relaxation of the dipole vector and OH bond vector of interfacial water. The ratio of reorientational relaxation time for Legendre polynomials of order 1 and 2 is approximately 2 for interface, intermediate, and bulk water, indicating the presence of jump dynamics in these water molecules. In voiced speech analysis epochal information is useful in accurate estimation of pitch periods and the frequency response of the vocal tract system. Ideally, linear prediction (LP) residual should give impulses at epochs. However, there are often ambiguities in the direct use of LP residual since samples of either polarity occur around epochs. Further, since the digital inverse filter does not compensate the phase response of the vocal tract system exactly, there is an uncertainty in the estimated epoch position. In this paper we present an interpretation of LP residual by considering the effect of the following factors: 1) the shape of glottal pulses, 2) inaccurate estimation of formants and bandwidths, 3) phase angles of formants at the instants of excitation, and 4) zeros in the vocal tract system. A method for the unambiguous identification of epochs from LP residual is then presented. The accuracy of the method is tested by comparing the results with the epochs obtained from the estimated glottal pulse shapes for several vowel segments. The method is used to identify the closed glottis interval for the estimation of the true frequency response of the vocal tract system.

In 1984 Jutila [5] obtained a transformation formula for certain exponential sums involving the Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form for the full modular group SL(2, Z). With the help of the transformation formula he obtained good estimates for the distance between consecutive zeros on the critical line of the Dirichlet series associated with the cusp form and for the order of the Dirichlet series on the critical line, [7]. In this paper we follow Jutila to obtain a transformation formula for exponential sums involving the Fourier coefficients of either holomorphic cusp forms or certain Maass forms for congruence subgroups of SL(2, Z) and prove similar estimates for the corresponding Dirichlet series.

In this article, we use some spectral properties of polynomials presented in 1] and map an auto-correlation sequence to a set of Line Spectral Frequencies(LSFs) and reflection coefficients. This novel characterization of an auto-correlation sequence is used to obtain a lattice structure of a Linear-Phase(LP) FIR filter.
