A simple new series, using an expansion of the velocity profile in parabolic cylinder functions, has been developed to describe the nonlinear evolution of a steady, laminar, incompressible wake from a given arbitrary initial profile. The first term in this series is itself found to provide a very satisfactory prediction of the decay of the maximum velocity defect in the wake behind a flat plate or aft of the recirculation zone behind a symmetric blunt body. A detailed analysis, including higher order terms, has been made of the flat plate wake with a Blasius profile at the trailing edge. The same method yields, as a special case, complete results for the development of linearized wakes with arbitrary initial profile under the influence of arbitrary pressure gradients. Finally, for purposes of comparison, a simple approximate solution is obtained using momentum integral methods, and found to predict satisfactorily the decay of the maximum velocity defect. © 1970 Wolters-Noordhoff Publishing.

Different seismic hazard components pertaining to Bangalore city, namely soil overburden thickness, effective shear-wave velocity, factor of safety against liquefaction potential, peak ground acceleration at the seismic bedrock, site response in terms of amplification factor, and the predominant frequency, has been individually evaluated. The overburden thickness distribution, predominantly in the range of 5-10 m in the city, has been estimated through a sub-surface model from geotechnical bore-log data. The effective shear-wave velocity distribution, established through Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) survey and subsequent data interpretation through dispersion analysis, exhibits site class D (180-360 m/s), site class C (360-760 m/s), and site class B (760-1500 m/s) in compliance to the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) nomenclature. The peak ground acceleration has been estimated through deterministic approach, based on the maximum credible earthquake of M-W = 5.1 assumed to be nucleating from the closest active seismic source (Mandya-Channapatna-Bangalore Lineament). The 1-D site response factor, computed at each borehole through geotechnical analysis across the study region, is seen to be ranging from around amplification of one to as high as four times. Correspondingly, the predominant frequency estimated from the Fourier spectrum is found to be predominantly in range of 3.5-5.0 Hz. The soil liquefaction hazard assessment has been estimated in terms of factor of safety against liquefaction potential using standard penetration test data and the underlying soil properties that indicates 90% of the study region to be non-liquefiable. The spatial distributions of the different hazard entities are placed on a GIS platform and subsequently, integrated through analytical hierarchal process. The accomplished deterministic hazard map shows high hazard coverage in the western areas. The microzonation, thus, achieved is envisaged as a first-cut assessment of the site specific hazard in laying out a framework for higher order seismic microzonation as well as a useful decision support tool in overall land-use planning, and hazard management. Some new concepts characterizing the response of nonlinear systems are developed. These new concepts are denoted by the terms, the transient system equivalent, the response vector, and the space-phase components. This third concept is analyzed in comparison with the well-known technique of symmetrical components. The performance of a multiplicative feedback control system is represented by a nonlinear integro-differential equation; its solution is obtained by the principle of variation of parameters. The system response is treated as a vector and is resolved into its space-phase components. The individual effects of these components on the performance of the system are discussed. The suitability of the technique for the transient analysis of higher order nonlinear control systems is discussed.

Bacillus subtilis BacB is an oxidase that is involved in the production of the antibiotic bacilysin. This protein contains two double-stranded beta-helix (cupin) domains fused in a compact arrangement. BacB crystallizes in three crystal forms under similar crystallization conditions. An interesting observation was that a slight perturbation of the crystallization droplet resulted in the nucleation of a different crystal form. An X-ray absorption scan of BacB suggested the presence of cobalt and iron in the crystal. Here, a comparative analysis of the different crystal forms of BacB is presented in an effort to identify the basis for the different lattices. It is noted that metal ions mediating interactions across the asymmetric unit dominate the different packing arrangements. Furthermore, a normalized B-factor analysis of all the crystal structures suggests that the solvent-exposed metal ions decrease the flexibility of a loop segment, perhaps influencing the choice of crystal form. The residues coordinating the surface metal ion are similar in the triclinic and monoclinic crystal forms. The coordinating ligands for the corresponding metal ion in the tetragonal crystal form are different, leading to a tighter packing arrangement. Although BacB is a monomer in solution, a dimer of BacB serves as a template on which higher order symmetrical arrangements are formed. The different crystal forms of BacB thus provide experimental evidence for metal-ion-mediated lattice formation and crystal packing.

Driven nonequilibrium structural phase transformation has been probed using time-varying resistance fluctuations or noise. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian component (NGC) of noise obtained by evaluating the higher-order statistics of fluctuations, serves as a simple kinetic detector of these phase transitions. Using the Martensite transformation in free-standing wires of nickel-titanium binary alloys as a prototype, we observe clear deviations from the Gaussian background in the transformation zone, indicative of the long-range correlations in the system as the phase transforms. The viability of non-Gaussian statistics as a robust probe to structural phase transition was also confirmed by comparing the results from differential scanning calorimetry measurements. We further studied the response of the NGC to the modifications in the microstructure on repeated thermal cycling, as well as the variations in the temperature-drive rate, and explained the results using established simplistic models based on the different competing time scales. Our experiments (i) suggest an alternative method to estimate the transformation temperature scales with high accuracy and (ii) establish a connection between the material-specific evolution of microstructure to the statistics of its linear response. Since the method depends on an in-built long-range correlation during transformation, it could be portable to other structural transitions, as well as to materials of different physical origin and size.

We investigate the scalar K pi form factor at low energies by the method of unitarity bounds adapted so as to include information on the phase and modulus along the elastic region of the unitarity cut. Using at input the values of the form factor at t = 0 and the Callan-Treiman point, we obtain stringent constraints on the slope and curvature parameters of the Taylor expansion at the origin. Also, we predict a quite narrow range for the higher-order ChPT corrections at the second Callan-Treiman point.

A ternary thermodynamic function has been developed based on statistico-thermodynamic considerations, with a particular emphasis on the higher-order terms indicating the effects of truncation at the various stages of the treatment. Although the truncation of a series involved in the equation introduces inconsistency, the latter may be removed by imposing various thermodynamic boundary conditions. These conditions are discussed in the paper. The present equation with higher-order terms shows that the α function of a component reduces to a quadratic function of composition at constant compositional paths involving the other two components in the system. The form of the function has been found to be representative of various experimental observations.

A molecular theory of collective orientational relaxation of dipolar molecules in a dense liquid is presented. Our work is based on a generalized, nonlinear, Smoluchowski equation (GSE) that includes the effects of intermolecular interactions through a mean‐field force term. The effects of translational motion of the liquid molecules on the orientational relaxation is also included self‐consistently in the GSE. Analytic expressions for the wave‐vector‐dependent orientational correlation functions are obtained for one component, pure liquid and also for binary mixtures. We find that for a dipolar liquid of spherical molecules, the correlation function ϕ(k,t) for l=1, where l is the rank of the spherical harmonics, is biexponential. At zero wave‐vector, one time constant becomes identical with the dielectric relaxation time of the polar liquid. The second time constant is the longitudinal relaxation time, but the contribution of this second component is small. We find that polar forces do not affect the higher order correlation functions (l>1) of spherical dipolar molecules in a linearized theory. The expression of ϕ(k,t) for a binary liquid is a sum of four exponential terms. We also find that the wave‐vector‐dependent relaxation times depend strongly on the microscopic structure of the dense liquid. At intermediate wave vectors, the translational diffusion greatly accelerates the rate of orientational relaxation. The present study indicates that one must pay proper attention to the microscopic structure of the liquid while treating the translational effects. An analysis of the nonlinear terms of the GSE is also presented. An interesting coupling between the number density fluctuation and the orientational fluctuation is uncovered.

The existence of an icosahedral phase in Mg−Al−Ag is better understood on a crystallographic basis rather than on a quantum structural diagram basis. The quasicrystalline structure is delineated in terms of quasiperiodic arrangement of Pauling triacontahedra, which can be identified in the equilibrium structure. Subtle differences in the electron diffraction patterns have been recorded compared to the ideal quasicrystalline pattern. The misalignment of spots and distortions are better attributed to higher order rational approximate structure than anisotropic phason strain. Ares of diffuse intensity have been related to the ordering among the atoms in the clusters.

DNA adopts different conformations not only based on novel base pairs, but also with different chain polarities. Besides several duplex structures (A, B, Z, parallel stranded (ps)-DNA, etc.), DNA also forms higher-order structures like triplex, tetraplex, and i-motif. Each of these structures has its own biological significance. The ps-duplexes have been found to be resistant to certain nucleases and endonucleases. Molecules that promote triple-helix formation have significant potential. These investigations have many therapeutic advantages which may be useful in the regulation of the expression of genes responsible for certain diseases by locking either their transcription (antigene) or translation (antisense). Each DNA minor groove binding ligand (MGBL) interacts with DNA through helical minor groove recognition in a sequence-specific manner, and this interferes with several DNA-associated processes. Incidentally, these ligands interact with some non-B-DNA and with higher-order DNA structures including ps-DNA and triplexes. While the design and recognition of minor grooves of duplex DNA by specific MGBLs have been a topic of many reports, limited information is available on the binding behavior of MGBLs with nonduplex DNA. In this review, we summarize various attempts of the interaction of MGBLs with ps-DNA and DNA triplexes.

High-speed evaluation of a large number of linear, quadratic, and cubic expressions is very important for the modeling and real-time display of objects in computer graphics. Using VLSI techniques, chips called pixel planes have actually been built by H. Fuchs and his group to evaluate linear expressions. In this paper, we describe a topological variant of Fuchs' pixel planes which can evaluate linear, quadratic, cubic, and higher-order polynomials. In our design, we make use of local interconnections only, i.e., interconnections between neighboring processing cells. This leads to the concept of tiling the processing cells for VLSI implementation.

A procedure has been given for minimizing the total output noise of a Generalized Impedance Converter (GIC), subject to constraints dictated by signal handling capability of the Operational Amplifiers and ease of microcircuit fabrication. The noise reduction is achieved only by the adjustment of RC elements of the GIC, and the total output noise after optimization in the example cited is close to the theoretical lower limit. The output noise of a higher-order filter can be reduced by RC-optimizing the individual GIC's of the active realization. Experimental results on a 20–24 kHz channel bank band-pass filter demonstrate the effectiveness of the above procedure.

The Gibbs' energy change for the reaction, 3CoO (r.s.)+1/2O2(g)→Co3O4(sp), has been measured between 730 and 1250 K using a solid state galvanic cell: Pt, CuO+Cu2O|(CaO)ZrO2|CoO+Co3O4,Pt. The emf of this cell varies nonlinearly with temperature between 1075 and 1150 K, indicating a second or higher order phase transition in Co3O4around 1120 (±20) K, associated with an entropy change of ∼43 Jmol-1K-1. The phase transition is accompanied by an anomalous increase in lattice parameter and electrical conductivity. The cubic spinel structure is retained during the transition, which is caused by the change in CO+3 ions from low spin to high spin state. The octahedral site preference energy of CO+3 ion in the high spin state has been evaluated as -24.8 kJ mol-1. This is more positive than the value for CO+2 ion (-32.9 kJ mol-1). The cation distribution therefore changes from normal to inverse side during the phase transition. The transformation is unique, coupling spin unpairing in CO+3 ion with cation rearrangement on the spinel lattice, DTA in pure oxygen revealed a small peak corresponding to the transition, which could be differentiated from the large peak due to decomposition. TGA showed that the stoichiometry of oxide is not significantly altered during the transition. The Gibbs' energy of formation of Co3O4 from CoO and O2 below and above phase transition can be represented by the equations:ΔG0=-205,685+170.79T(±200) J mol-1(730-1080 K) and ΔG0=-157,235+127.53T(±200) J mol-1(1150-1250 K).

A higher-order theory of laminated composites under in-plane loads is developed. The displacement field is expanded in terms of the thickness co-ordinate, satisfying the zero shear stress condition at the surfaces of the laminate. Using the principle of virtual displacement, the governing equations and boundary conditions are established. Numerical results for interlaminar stresses arising in the case of symmetric laminates under uniform extension have been obtained and are compared with similar results available in the literature.

In computational mechanics, finite rotations are often represented by rotation vectors. Rotation vector increments corresponding to different tangent: spaces are generally related by a linear operator, known as the tangential transformation T. In this note, we derive the higher order terms that are usually left out in linear relation. The exact nonlinear relation is also presented. Errors via the linearized T are numerically estimated. While the concept of T arises out of the nonlinear characteristics of the rotation manifold, it has been derived via tensor analysis in the context of computational mechanics (Cardona and Geradin, 1988). We investigate the operator T from a Lie group perspective, which provides a better insight and a 1-1 correspondence between approaches based on tensor analysis and the standard matrix Lie group theory.
