Sulphuryl chlorofluoride has no observable reaction with metals and metal oxides at room temperature. Metals like copper, silver, iron, and zinc react with the chlorofluoride in the temperature range 200400C. Metal chlorides, metal fluorides and sulphur dioxide are the main products of these reactions. With the corresponding metal oxides, on the other hand, the respective metal sulphates are formed in addition to the metal chlorides and fluorides. In the case of lead and lead oxide, lead chlorofluoride is formed instead of lead chloride and lead fluoride. Sulphuryl fluoride is formed in small quantities in all these reactions by the decomposition of the chlorofluoride. Glass is not attacked by sulphuryl chlorofluoride below 500C.

Silicon tetrahalides, SiX4 (X=F, Cl, Br) and the fluorosilicates of sodium and potassium react with phosphorus pentoxide above 300C. The tetrahalides give rise to the corresponding phosphoryl halides and silica, while the fluorosilicates form the corresponding metal fluorophosphates and silicon tetrafluoride. The reaction of the fluorosilicates of sodium and potassium with sulphur trioxide occurs at room temperature to give rise to the corresponding metal fluorosulphates and silicon tetrafluoride.

Creeping flow hydrodynamics combined with diffusion boundary layer equation are solved in conjunction with free-surface cell model to obtain a solution of the problem of convective transfer with surface reaction for flow parallel to an array of cylindrical pellets at high Peclet numbers and under fast and intermediate kinetics regimes. Expressions are derived for surface concentration, boundary layer thickness, mass flux and Sherwood number in terms of Damkoehler number, Peclet number and void fraction of the array. The theoretical results are evaluated numerically.

In higher primates, increased circulating follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels seen during late menstrual cycle and during menstruation has been suggested to be necessary for initiation of follicular growth, recruitment of follicles and eventually culminating in ovulation of a single follicle. With a view to establish the dynamics of circulating FSH secretion with that of inhibin A (INH A) and progesterone (P-4)secretions during the menstrual cycle, blood was collected daily from bonnet monkeys beginning day 1 of the menstrual cycle up to 35 days. Serum INH A levels were low during early follicular phase, increased significantly coinciding with the mid cycle luteinizing hormone (LH) surge to reach maximal levels during the mid luteal phase before declining at the late luteal phase, essentially paralleling the pattern Of P-4 secretion seen throughout the luteal phase. Circulating FSH levels were low during early and mid luteal phases, but progressively increased during the late luteal phase and remained high for few days after the onset of menses. In another experiment, lutectomy performed during the mid luteal phase resulted in significant decrease in INH A concentration within 2 hr (58.3 +/- 2 vs. 27.3 +/- 3 pg/mL), and a 2- to 3-fold rise in circulating FSH levels by 24 hr (0.20 +/- 0.02 vs. 0.53 +/- 0.14 ng/mL) that remained high until 48 hr postlutectomy. Systemic administration of Cetrorelix (150 mu g/kg body weight), a gonadotropin releasing hormone receptor antagonist, at mid luteal phase in monkeys led to suppression of serum INH A and P-4 concentrations 24 hr post treatment, but circulating FSH levels did not change. Administration of exogenous LH, but not FSH, significantly increased INH A concentration. The results taken together suggest a tight coupling between LH and INH A secretion and that INH A is largely responsible for maintenance of low FSH concentration seen during the luteal phase. Am. J. A mathematical model for doped-oxide-source diffusion is proposed. In this model the concept of segregation of impurity at the silicon-silicon dioxide is used and also a constant of rate limitation is introduced through a chemical reaction at the interface.

In this study, a series of seeondary- and tertiary-amino-substituted diaryl diselenides were synthesized and studied for their glutathione peroxidase (GPx) like antioxidant activities with H2O2, cumene hydroperoxide, or tBuOOH as substrates and with PhSH or glutathione (GSH) as thiol cosubstrates. This study reveals that replacement of the tert-amino groups in benzylamine-based diselenides by sec-amino moieties drastically enhances the catalytic activities in both the aromatic thiol (PhSH) and GSH assay systems. Particularly, the N-propyl- and N-isopropylamino-substituted diselenides are 8-18 times more active than the corresponding N,N-dipropyl- and N,N-diisopropylamine-based compounds in all three peroxide systems when GSH is used as the thiol cosubstrate. Although the catalytic mechanism of sec-amino-substituted disclenides is similar to that of the tert-amine-based compounds, differences in the stability and reactivity of some of the key intermediates account for the differences in the GPx-like activities. it is observed that the sec-amino groups are better than the tert-amino moieties for generating the catalytically active selenols. This is due to the absence of any significant thiol-exchange reactions in the selenenyl sulfides derived from sec-amine-based diselenides. Furthermore, the seleninic acids (RSeO2H) derived from the sec-amine-based compounds are more stable toward further reactions with peroxides than their tert-amine-based analogues.

Pentoxifylline (PF) is used to enhance motility of spermatozoa from infertile human subjects. We have previously shown that 0.45 mM PF improved capacitation of spermatozoa and fertilization of oocytes in vitro in hamsters. The present study was carried out to assess PF- induced changes in motility kinematics of hamster spermatozoa by a computer-aided sperm analyser (CASA) and determine the timing of onset of hyperactivation (HA) and acrosome reaction (AR) in PF-treated spermatozoa. Motility kinematics were analysed by CASA for 0-8 h in the absence or presence of 0.45 mM PF in Tyrode's medium supplemented with lactate, pyruvate and polyvinyl alcohol (TLP-PVA) or in TLP-PVA with bovine serum albumin (TALP-PVA). Conventional assessment was also made on the percentage of motility and quality of motility of spermatozoa; values were expressed as sperm motility index (SMI). Both in TALP-PVA and TLP-PVA, PF markedly increased SMI, especially the quality of motility (P < 0.02) by 2-3 h which was sustained up to 6 h. The motility kinematic data of PF-treated spermatozoa in TALP-PVA showed that average path velocity, curvilinear velocity and amplitude of lateral head displacement significantly (P < 0.05) increased as early as 2 h, with the expected decrease in straightness (STR) and linearity (LIN). Similar changes were also observed with PF-treated spermatozoa in TLP-PVA. Moreover, the percentage of hyperactivated spermatozoa in PF-treated samples was significantly (P < 0.001) higher than the untreated control at 2 h. To determine whether PF could induce AR, independent of bovine serum albumin, quantitative AR was assessed by observing the presence or absence of acrosomal cap on viable spermatozoa. PF significantly (P < 0.001) increased the percentage of AR as early as 2 h, reaching maximum at 4 h both in TALP-PVA (P < 0.05) and in TLP-PVA (P < 0.001). These results show that, in hamsters, PF induces early onset (by 2 h) of HA and AR and increases the proportion of spermatozoa undergoing physiological maturation.

DNA intercalators are one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents. Novel intercalating compounds of pyrimido[4',5':4,5]selenolo(2,3-b)quinoline series having a butylamino or piperazino group at fourth position (BPSQ and PPSQ, respectively) are studied. Our results showed that BPSQ induced cytotoxicity whereas PPSQ was cytostatic. The cytotoxicity induced by BPSQ was concentration- and time-dependent. Cell cycle analysis and tritiated thymidine assay revealed that BPSQ affects the cell cycle progression by arresting at S phase. The absence of p-histone H3 and reduction in the levels of PCNA in the cells treated with BPSQ further confirmed the cell cycle arrest. Further, annexin V staining, DNA fragmentation, nuclear condensation and changes in the expression levels of BCL2/BAD confirmed the activation of apoptosis. Activation of caspase 8 and lack of cleavage of caspase 9, caspase 3 and PARP suggest the possibility of BPSQ triggering extrinsic pathway for induction of apoptosis, which is discussed. Hence, we have identified a novel compound which would have clinical relevance in cancer chemotherapeutics.

We show that data from recent experiments carried out on the kinetics of DNA escape from alpha-hemolysin nanopores [M. Wiggin, C. Tropini, C. T. Cossa, N. N. Jetha, and A. Marziali, Biophys. J. 95, 5317 (2008)] may be rationalized by a model of chain dynamics based on the anomalous diffusion of a particle moving in a harmonic well in the presence of a delta function sink. The experiments of Wiggin found, among other things, that the occasional occurrence of unusually long escape times in the distribution of chain trapping events led to nonexponential decays in the survival probability, S(t), of the DNA molecules within the nanopore. Wiggin ascribed this nonexponentiality to the existence of a distribution of trapping potentials, which they suggested was theresult of stochastic interactions between the bases of the DNA and the amino acids located on the surface of the nanopore. Based on this idea, they showed that the experimentally determined S(t) could be well fit in both the short and long time regimes by a function of the form (1+t/tau)(-alpha) (the so called Becquerel function). In our model, S(t) is found to be given by a Mittag-Leffler function at short times and by a generalized Mittag-Leffler function at long times. By suitable choice of certain parameter values, these functions are found to fit the experimental S(t) even better than the Becquerel function. Anomalous diffusion of DNA within the trap prior to escape over a barrier of fixed height may therefore provide a second, plausible explanation of the data, and may offer fresh perspectives on similar trapping and escape problems.

Growth of human promonocytic leukaemic U937 cells was found arrested within 24 h upon exposure to interferon gamma (IFN-gamma). Removal of the interferon did not result in the resumption of growth, as is evident from the absence of doubling of viable cell count and(3)H-thymidine incorporation. 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-based flow cytometric analysis of the growth-arrested cells, 24 h subsequent to the removal of IFN-gamma, showed absence of DNA synthesis, confirming the irreversible nature of the growth inhibition. Propidium iodide-based flow cytometric analysis of the growth-arrested cells showed a distribution which is typical of a growth inhibition without resulting in the accumulation of cells in any specific phase of the cell cycle. These results indicated that IFN-gamma arrested growth of U937 cells in an irreversible and cell cycle phase-independent manner. These observations were in contrast to our earlier report on the reversible and cell cycle phase-specific growth inhibition of human amniotic (fetal epithelial) WISH cells by the interferon.
