The ultrasonic degradation of two dyes, Rhodamine B (C28H31ClN2O3) and Rhodamine Blue (C28H32N2O3), were studied in the absence of catalyst and in the presence of two catalysts (combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2. The rate of degradation of catalyzed reaction was higher than that obtained with in the absence of the catalysts. Among the catalysts, combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 degraded the dyes faster when compared to the degradation with commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was developed and the kinetic rate parameters were determined. The effect of other operating parameters, such as initial concentration, pH, temperature, and power intensity, was also investigated. The degradation rate increased with decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and higher intensity.

The reaction of cadmium sulfate in the presence of polyazaheterocyclic organic molecules gave rise to a variety of new cadmium sulfate phases in water containing solvothermal reaction. The compounds have two- (I) and three-dimensionally (II-VI) extended structures. All the compounds have structures built up by the connectivity involving the cadmium octahedra and the sulfate tetrahedra in which the heterocyclic organic molecules act as the ligand. The linkages between the Cd2+ and (SO4)2- ions form one- (II), two- (I, III, and IV), and three- (V and VI) dimensionally extended cadmium sulfate phases. The connectivity between Cd2+ ion and the heterocyclic ligand also gives rise to one- and two-dimensional structures. The inter-connectivity between the two units gives rise to the observed structures. The presence of Cd-O-Cd chains and Cd-O-Cd layers in some of the structures is noteworthy. The adsorption/desorption studies suggest that the cadmium sulfate phases adsorb/desorb anionic dyes selectively in the presence of water/ethanol, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation studies on cationic dyes under UV-irradiation indicate modest activity. The cyanosilylation of imines using the present compounds as heterogeneous catalyst indicate good catalytic behavior. The various properties exhibited by the cadmium sulfate phases suggest that these compounds are versatile. All the compounds were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared (IR) and UV-visible studies.

Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) provides valuable information on the ionization energies of atoms and molecules. The ionization energy (IE) is given by the relation.hv = IE + T where hv is t h e energy of the radiation and T i s the kinetic energy of the electron. The IEs are directly related to the orbital energies (Koopmans' theorem). By employing UV radiation (HeI. 21.2 eV. or HeII. 40.8 eV). extensive data on the ionization of valence electrons in organic molecules have been obtained in recent years. These studies of UV photoelectron spectroscopy. originated by Turner, have provided a direct probe into the energy levels of organic molecules. Molecular orbital calculations of various degrees of sophistication are generally employed to make assignments of the PES bands. Analysis of the vibrational structure of PES bands has not only provided structural information on the molecular ions, but has also been of value in band assignments. Dewar and co-workers [1, 2) presented summaries of available PES data on organic molecules in 1969 and 1970. Turner et al. [3] published a handbook of Hel spectra of organic molecules in 1970. Since then, a few books [4-7] discussing the principles and applications of UV photoelectron spectroscopy have appeared of which special mention should be made of the recent article by Heilbronner and Maier [7]. There has, however, been no comprehensive review of the vast amount of data on the UV-PES of organic molecules published in the literature since 1970.

Photocatalytic degradation of municipal wastewater was investigated using reagent grade TiO2 and modified neodymium doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles. For the first time, surface modification of Nd3+ doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were carried out with n-butylamine as surface modifier under mild hydrothermal conditions. The modified nanoparticles obtained were characterized by Powder XRD, FTIR, DLS, TEM, BET surface area, zeta potential and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated better morphology, particle size distribution and low agglomeration of the nanoparticles synthesized. It was found that photodegradation of wastewater using surface modified neodymium doped TiO2 nanoparticles was more compared to pure TiO2, which can be attributed to the doping and modification with n-butylamine.

Several samples of poly(vinyl formal) having the same vinyl alcohol content (8–9%) but varying contents of vinyl acetate (6–22%) and vinyl formol (70–85%) were prepared and subjected to thermogravimetric analysis, in air and nitrogen atmospheres, employing both isothermal and dynamic methods. Kinetic parameters determined from both the isothermal and dynamic TGA data are compared. The activation energy is seen to be largely dependent on the degree of conversion, implying a complex degradation reaction. The activation energy is also much less for degradation in air than in nitrogen, which can be explained by a reaction with oxygen-producing structures favoring degradation. The activation energy is less sensitive to variation in polymer composition for degradation in air than in nitrogen. Thus, in the dynamic process, the activation energy value decreases (from 36 to 23 kcal/mole) with increasing acetate content (from 6 to 22%) in nitrogen atmosphere, while in air the activation energy value increases only moderately (from 21 to 27 kcal/mole) with increasing acetate content (from 6 to 22%). The order of reaction is nearly unity, irrespective of the composition of the polymer, both in air and nitrogen.

An oxidative pathway hitherto unknown for tile degradation of a sesquiterpene alcohol, nerolidol (I) by Alcaligenes eutrophus is presented. Fermentation of nerolidol (I) by this organism in a mineral salts medium resulted in the formation of geranylacetone (II) and an optically active alcohol (S)-(+)-geranylacetol (III), as major metabolites. Nerolidol (I) induced cells readily transformed 1,2-epoxynerolidol (IV) and 1,2-dihydroxynerolidol (V) into geranylacetone (II). These cells also exhibited their ability to carry out stereospecific reduction of II into (S)-(+)-geranylacetol (III). Oxygen uptake studies clearly indicated that nerolidol induced cells oxidized compounds II, III, IV, V and ethyleneglycol. Based on these observations a new oxidative pathway for the degradation of I is suggested which envisages the epoxidation of the terminal double bond, opening of the epoxide and cleavage between C-2 and C-3 in a manner similar to the periodate oxidation of diol.

The sharp increase in microwave power loss (the reverse of what has previously been reported) at the transition temperature in high-Tc superconducting systems such as YBaCu oxide (polycrystalline bulk and thin films obtained by the laser ablation technique) and BiPbSrCaCu oxide is reported. The differences between DC resistivity ( rho ) and the microwave power loss (related to microwave surface resistance) are analysed from the data obtained by a simultaneous measurement set-up. The influence of various parameters, such as preparation conditions, thickness and aging of the sample and the probing frequency (6-18 GHz), on the variation of microwave power loss with temperature is outlined.

A new delafossite oxide, AgLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2, synthesized by ion-exchanging interlayer-Li+ with Ag+ in layered Li2RuO3, is reported. The transformation of layered Li2RuO3 (monoclinic, space group C2/c) to AgLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2 possessing a delafossite structure (space group R (3) over barm) has been established with powder X-ray diffraction. The successful conversion of LiLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2 to AgLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2 is further confirmed by EDAX analysis. The diffuse reflectance spectrum of AgLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2 shows broad absorption in the UV-visible region suggesting its use as a photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of AgLi1/3Ru2/3]O-2 has been investigated by degrading various dyes. It showed significant photocatalytic activity for dye degradation both under UV and solar radiation. The present research work reports the eosin Y (EY) and fluorescein (FL) sensitized visible light degradation of phenol, 4-chlorophenol (CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) using combustion synthesized nano-TiO2 (CS TiO2). The rate of degradation of the phenolic compounds was higher in the presence of EY/CS TiO2 compared to FL/CS TiO2 system. A detailed mechanism of sensitized degradation was proposed and a mechanistic model for the rate of degradation of the phenolic compound was derived using the pyramidal network reduction technique. It was found that at low initial dye concentrations, the rate of degradation of the phenolic compound is first order in the concentration of the dye, while at high initial dye concentrations, the rate is first order in the concentration of the phenolic compound. The order of degradation of the different phenolic compounds follows: CP > TCP > DCP > phenol. The different phenolic and dye intermediates that were formed during the degradation were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and the most probable pathway of degradation is proposed.
