Using the density-matrix renormalization-group technique, we study the ground-state phase diagram and other low-energy properties of an isotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain with both dimerization and frustration, i.e., an alternation delta of the nearest-neighbor exchanges and a next-nearest-neighbor exchange J(2). For delta = 0, the system is gapless for J(2) < J(2c) and has a gap for J(2) > J(2c) where J(2c) is about 0.241. For J(2) = J(2c) the gap above the ground state grows as delta to the power 0.667 +/- 0.001. In the J(2)-delta plane, there is a disorder line 2J(2) + delta = 1. To the left of this line, the peak in the static structure factor S(q) is at q(max) = pi (Neel phase), while to the right of the line, q(max) decreases from pi to pi/2 as J(2) is increased to large values (spiral phase). For delta = 1, the system is equivalent to two coupled chains as on a ladder and it is gapped for all values of the interchain coupling.

Anomalous changes in the infrared intensity of the cobalt-oxygen stretching modes in the infrared spectrum of lanthanum cobaltate (LaCoO3) suggest vibronic coupling. This phenomenon has been studied by infrared vibrational spectroscopy both by temperature-induced changes of spin-state occupation and pressure-induced changes of the crystal field splitting 10Dq.

The experimental realization of various spin ladder systems has prompted their detailed theoretical investigations. Hen we study the evolution of ground-state magnetization with an external magnetic field for two different antiferromagnetic systems: a three-legged spin-1/2 ladder, and a two-legged spin-1/2 ladder with an additional diagonal interaction. The finite system density-matrix renormalization-group method is employed for numerical studies of the three-chain system, and an effective low-energy Hamiltonian is used in the limit of strong interchain coupling to study the two- and three-chain systems. The three-chain system has a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. The two-chain system has a plateau at zero magnetization due to a gap above the singlet ground state. It also has a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization for a certain range of values of the couplings. We study the regions of transitions between plateaus numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong-coupling expansion, by an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the XXZ model, We also study numerically some low-temperature properties of the three-chain system, such as the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. We present a comparative study of the spin states and electronic properties of La1-xSrxCoO3 and La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy at both the O-K and Co-L-2.3 thresholds. In the La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 system the CoO6 octahedra are isolated, the holes induced by Sr doping are trapped in the isolated Co(IV)O-6 octahedra, and a low-spin state is found for the Co ions, which does not change upon Sr doping. In the La1-xSrxCoO3 system, the interconnected CoO6 octahedra, with a 180degrees Co-O-Co bond angle, give rise to a transition from low-spin to intermediate-spin state with a ferromagnetic alignment of the Co spins. The double-exchange, ferromagnetic coupling between Co ions mediated by the 180degrees bond angle is responsible for suppressing the low spin-state. We find that the branching ratio of spectral intensities at the L-2 and L-3 thresholds in the Co-L-2.3 X-ray absorption spectra is sensitive to the spin state of the Co ions allowing its direct spectroscopic determination. Inspired by the exact solution of the Majumdar-Ghosh model, a family of one-dimensional, translationally invariant spin Hamiltonians is constructed. The exchange coupling in these models is antiferromagnetic, and decreases linearly with the separation between the spins. The coupling becomes identically zero beyond a certain distance. It is rigorously proved that the dimer configuration is an exact, superstable ground-state configuration of all the members of the family on a periodic chain. The ground state is twofold degenerate, and there exists an energy gap above the ground state. The Majumdar-Ghosh Hamiltonian with a twofold degenerate dimer ground state is just the first member of the family. The scheme of construction is generalized to two and three dimensions, and illustrated with the help of some concrete examples. The first member in two dimensions is the Shastry-Sutherland model. Many of these models have exponentially degenerate, exact dimer ground states.

We investigate the effect of static electron-phonon coupling on real-time dynamics of spin and charge transport in pi-conjugated polyene chains. The polyene chain is modeled by the Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian with dimerized nearest-neighbor parameter t(0)(1 + delta) for short bonds and t(0)(1 - delta) for long bonds, and long-range electron-electron interactions. We follow the time evolution of the spin and charge using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique when a hole is injected at one end of the chain in its ground state. We find that spin and charge dynamics followed through spin and charge velocities depend both on chain length and extent of dimerization delta. Analysis of the results requires focusing on physical quantities such as average spin and charge polarizations, particularly in the large dimerization limit. In the dimerization range 0.0 <= delta <= 0.15, spin-charge dynamics is found to have a well-defined behavior, with spin-charge separation (measured as the ratio of charge velocity to spin velocity) as well as the total amount of charge and spin transported in a given time along the chain decreasing as dimerization increases. However, in the range 0.3 <= delta <= 0.5, it is observed that the dynamics of spin and charge transport becomes complicated. It is observed that, for large delta values, spin-charge separation is suppressed and the injected hole fails to travel the entire length of the chain.

Anomalous temperature dependence of Raman phonon wavenumbers attributed to phononphonon anharmonic interactions has been studied in two different families of pyrochlore titanates. We bring out the role of the ionic size of titanium and the inherent vacancies of pyrochlore in these anomalies by studying the effect of replacement of Ti4?+ by Zr4?+ in Sm2Ti2O7 and by stuffing Ho3?+ in place of Ti4?+ in Ho2Ti2O7 with appropriate oxygen stoichiometry. Our results show that an increase in the concentration of the larger ion, i.e. Zr4?+ or Ho3?+, reduces the phonon anomalies, thus implying a decrease in the phononphonon anharmonic interactions. In addition, we find signatures of coupling between a phonon and crystal field transition in Sm2Ti2O7, manifested as an unusual increase in the phonon intensity with increasing temperature. We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe2As2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature T-SDW similar to 165K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T-SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like temperature dependent charge gap with its zero-temperature value of similar to(1.6 perpendicular to 0.2)k(B)T(SDW), whereas, much above T-SDW, an electron-phonon coupling constant of similar to 0.13 has been estimated from the linear temperature-dependence of the QP relaxation time. The long-wavelength coherent acoustic phonons with typical time-period of similar to 100 ps have been analyzed in the light of propagating strain pulse model providing important results for the optical constants, sounds velocity and the elastic modulus of the crystal in the whole temperature range of 3 to 300 K.

The magneto-dielectric coupling in (l00) oriented LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 single crystals has been investigated using temperature, frequency, and magnetic field dependent dielectric response. Electronic transport data divulges that polaronic hopping arises due to Emin-Holstein adiabatic small polarons. Spin realignment through external magnetic field favors faster polaronic hopping by lowering activation energy for dielectric relaxation. Finally, positive magneto-dielectricity and magnetoloss under increasing magnetic field at high frequency of the exciting ac field confirms intrinsic magneto-dielectric effect in disordered ferromagnetic-insulator LaMn0.5Co0.5O3. This study also emphasizes the need to use single crystals as well as the frequencies higher than the corresponding inverse relaxation time. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The electron spin resonance absorption in the synthetic metal polyaniline (PANI) doped with PTSA and its blend with poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) is investigated in the temperature range between 4.2 and 300 K. The observed line shape follows Dyson's theory for a thick metallic plate with slowly diffusing magnetic dipoles. At low temperatures the line shape become symmetric and Lorentzian when the sample dimensions are small in comparison with the skin depth. The temperature dependence of electron spin relaxation time is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spin-density maps, deduced from polarized neutron diffraction experiments, for both the pair and chain compounds of the system Mn2+Cu2+ have been reported recently. These results have motivated us to investigate theoretically the spin populations in such alternant mixed-spin systems. In this paper, we report our studies on the one-dimensional ferrimagnetic systems (S-A,S-B)(N) where hi is the number of AB pairs. We have considered all cases in which the spin Sri takes on allowed values in the range I to 7/2 while the spin S-B is held fixed at 1/2. The theoretical studies have been carried out on the isotropic Heisenberg model, using the density matrix renormalization group method. The effect of the magnitude of the larger spin SA On the quantum fluctuations in both A and B sublattices has been studied as a function of the system size N. We have investigated systems with both periodic and open boundary conditions, the latter with a view to understanding end-of-chain effects. The spin populations have been followed as a function of temperature as well as an applied magnetic field. High-magnetic fields are found to lead to interesting re-entrant behavior. The ratio of spin populations P-A-P-B is not sensitive to temperature at low temperatures.

The characterisation of cracks is usually done using the well known three basic fracture modes, namely opening, shearing and tearing modes. In isotropic materials these modes are uncoupled and provide a convenient way to define the fracture parameters. It is well known that these fracture modes are coupled in anisotropic materials. In the case of orthotropic materials also, coupling exists between the fracture modes, unless the crack plane coincides with one of the axes of orthotropy. The strength of coupling depends upon the orientation of the axes of orthotropy with respect to the crack plane and so the energy release rate components associated with each of the modes vary with crack orientation. The variation, of these energy release rate components with the crack orientation with respect to orthotropic axes, is analyzed in this paper. Results indicate that in addition to the orthotropic planes there exists other planes with reference to which fracture modes are uncoupled.

A rare example of a two-dimensional Heisenberg model with an exact dimerized ground state is presented. This model, which can be regarded as a variation on the kagome' lattice, has several features of interest: it has a highly (but not macroscopically) degenerate ground state; it is closely related to spin chains studied by earlier authors; in particular, it exhibits domain-wall-like "kink" excitations normally associated only with one-dimensional systems. In some limits it decouples into noninteracting chains; unusually, this happens in the limit of strong, rather than weak, interchain coupling. [S0163-1829(99)50338-X].

The cobalt(II) tris(bipyridyl) complex ion encapsulated in zeolite-Y supercages exhibits a thermally driven interconversion between a low-spin and a high-spin state-a phenomenon not observed for this ion either in solid state or in solution. From a comparative study of the magnetism and optical spectroscopy of the encapsulated and unencapsulated complex ion, supported by molecular modeling, such spin behavior is shown to be intramolecular in origin. In the unencapsulated or free state, the [Co(bipy)(3)](2+) ion exhibits a marked trigonal prismatic distortion, but on encapsulation, the topology of the supercage forces it to adopt a near-octahedral geometry. An analysis using the angular overlap ligand field model with spectroscopically derived parameters shows that the geometry does indeed give rise to a low-spin ground state, and suggests a possible scenario for the spin state interconversion.

Magnetic atoms at surfaces are a rich model system for solid-state magnetic bits exhibiting either classical(1,2) or quantum(3,4) behaviour. Individual atoms, however, are difficult to arrange in regular patterns(1-5). Moreover, their magnetic properties are dominated by interaction with the substrate, which, as in the case of Kondo systems, often leads to a decrease or quench of their local magnetic moment(6,7). Here, we show that the supramolecular assembly of Fe and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid molecules on a Cu surface results in ordered arrays of high-spin mononuclear Fe centres on a 1.5nm square grid. Lateral coordination with the molecular ligands yields unsaturated yet stable coordination bonds, which enable chemical modification of the electronic and magnetic properties of the Fe atoms independently from the substrate. The easy magnetization direction of the Fe centres can be switched by oxygen adsorption, thus opening a way to control the magnetic anisotropy in supramolecular layers akin to that used in metallic thin films.
