Pn this perspective on the increasingly important field of soft condensed matter science, I make the case for a concentrated multidisciplinary effort to develop the area in India. I base my arguments on its demonstrated potential for new 'emergent' phenomena, interesting table-top experiments, and applications.

Rigorous elastic-plastic finite element analysis of joints subjected to cyclic loading is carried out. An incremental-iterative algorithm is developed in a modular form combining elasto-plastic material behaviour and contact stress analysis. For the case of the interference fit, the analysis sequentially carries out insertion of the pin and application of the load on the joint, covering possible initiation of separation (and/or yielding) and progressively the receding/advancing contact at the pin-plate interface. Deformations of both the plate and the pin are considered in the analysis. Numerical examples are presented for the case of an interference fit pin in a large plate under remote cyclic tension, and for an interference fit pin lug joint subjected to cyclic loading. A detailed study is carried out for the latter problem considering the effect of change in contact/separation at the pin-plate interface on local stresses, strains and redistribution of these stresses with the spread of a plastic zone. The results of the study are a useful input for the estimation of the fatigue life of joints. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Electron transfer reactions between donor-acceptor pairs in solution and in organized media exhibit diverse behaviour. Recent experiments have indicated an interesting breakdown of the Marcus parabolic energy gap dependence in the normal regime for back electron transfer from contact ion pairs. A novel explanation of this breakdown has recently been proposed (M. Tachiya and S. Murata, J. Am. Chem. Sec., 116(1994) 2434) which attributes the breakdown to the interplay between the relaxation in the reactant well and the reaction. A particularly interesting aspect of the model is that it envisages the electron transfer in the normal regime to take place from a completely non-equilibrium condition. In this article a time dependent solution of the model is presented for the first time, after generalizing it to include a realistic initial population distribution. The decay of the contact ion pair population is completely non-exponential. This can be used to check the validity of the Tachiya-Murata model. The dynamics of electron transfer from the solvent separated ion pair, which seem to obey the Marcus relation, is exponential.

Mechanical fasteners introduce structural weakness, still they are an essential constituent of most structures as they permit interchangeability of parts and flexible construction programs; Variable temperature operations of Aerospace and Nuclear structures make it imperative to investigate the thermoelastic behaviour of joints. This paper explores analytically similar mechanical and thermal parameters to generalise the thermomechanical behaviour of a pin joint in an isotropic Sheet for a class of configurations. This generalization enables virtually direct application of existing information regarding joints under pure mechanical loading to joints subjected to combined thermomechanical loading, thus reducing the efforts of both the analyst and the designer by an order of magnitude. Epitaxial LaNiO3 metallic oxide thin films have been grown on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films on LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique and the interface formed between the two films has been examined by measuring the contact conductance of the same. The specific contact conductance of the interface measured using a modified four probe method was found to be 1.4 to 6 x 10(4) ohm(-1) cm(-2) at 77 K, There are indications that contact conductance can be brought closer to that obtained for noble metal-YBCO interface.

The consistency of very soft sediments prevents the conventional oedometer test from being applied to study their compressibility and permeability characteristics. The hydraulic consolidation test in existence requires sophisticated instrumentation and testing procedures. The present paper proposes a seepage-force-induced consolidation testing procedure for studying the compressibility and permeability behavior of soft sediments at low effective stress levels. The good agreement that has been observed between the results obtained from the proposed method and the conventional oedometer test at overlapping effective stress levels indicates that the proposed method can be used to study the compressibility and permeability characteristics of soft sediments at low effective stress levels satisfactorily.

Full-scale test embankments, with and without geotextile reinforcement, were constructed on soft Bangkok clay. The performances of these embankments are evaluated and compared with each other on the basis of field measurements and FEM analysis. The analyses of failure mechanisms and the investigations on the embankment stability using undrained conditions were also done to determine the critical embankment height and the corresponding geotextile strain. The high-strength geotextile can reduce the plastic deformation in the underlying foundation soil, increase the collapse height of the embankment on soft ground, and produce a two-step failure mechanism. In this case study, the critical strain in the geotextile corresponding to the primary failure of foundation soils may be taken as 2.5-3% irrespective of the geotextile reinforcement stiffness. Scattering of coherent light from scattering particles causes phase shift to the scattered light. The interference of unscattered and scattered light causes the formation of speckles. When the scattering particles, under the influence of an ultrasound (US) pressure wave, vibrate, the phase shift fluctuates, thereby causing fluctuation in speckle intensity. We use the laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) to reconstruct a map of the elastic property (Young's modulus) of soft tissue-mimicking phantom. The displacement of the scatters is inversely related to the Young's modulus of the medium. The elastic properties of soft biological tissues vary, many fold with malignancy. The experimental results show that laser speckle contrast (LSC) is very sensitive to the pathological changes in a soft tissue medium. The experiments are carried out on a phantom with two cylindrical inclusions of sizes 6 mm in diameter, separated by 8 mm between them. Three samples are made. One inclusion has Young's modulus E of 40 kPa. The second inclusion has either a Young's modulus E of 20 kPa, or scattering coefficient of mu'(s), = 3.00 mm(-1) or absorption coefficient of mu(a) = 0.03 mm(-1). The optical absorption (mu(a)), reduced scattering (mu'(s)) coefficient, and the Young's modulus of the background are mu(a) = 0.01 mm(-1), mu'(s) = 1.00 mm(-1) and 12kPa, respectively. The experiments are carried out on all three phantoms. On a phantom with two inclusions of Young's modulus of 20 and 40 kPa, the measured relative speckle image contrasts are 36.55% and 63.72%, respectively. Experiments are repeated on phantoms with inclusions of mu(a) = 0.03 mm-1, E = 40 kPa and mu'(s) = 3.00 mm(-1). The results show that it is possible to detect inclusions with contrasts in optical absorption, optical scattering, and Young's modulus. Studies of the variation of laser speckle contrast with ultrasound driving force for various values of mu(a), mu'(s), and Young's modulus of the tissue mimicking medium are also carried out. Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.

MoSi2 and its composite with TiB2 (10 and 20 wt.%) particulates were synthesized by the hot pressing technique. Dry sliding wear experiments were done on these samples by pin-on-disc method on an EN-24 steel disc. It was observed that the densification and the reinforcement of the matrix are beneficial in reducing the friction and wear Of MoSi2. The tribofilm that was formed during sliding contained both the disc and the pin material. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The surface properties of coal-pyrite play a major role in determining its separation from coal in processes such as flotation. The solution pH is an important parameter in determining the surface properties of both coal and coal-pyrite such as surface free energy and zeta-potential. In the present investigation, the effect of pH on the surface free energy of pyrites from different sources was studied. The surface free energy of solids is made up of two components, i.e. the dispersive surface free energy and the acid-base interaction energy. Various methods have been used by previous researchers to evaluate these two components for different solids. In the present study, a new approach was developed and used to study the surface free energy of pyrite surfaces. Results indicate that the dispersion surface free energy of various pyrites is independent of pH while the acid-base interaction energy is strongly dependent on the pH. The acid-base interaction energy is different for each pyrite sample and also the change with pH varies with the type of pyrite. Coal-pyrite was found to be more hydrophobic than ore-pyrite which may be attributed to the presence of carbon in coal-pyrites. The acid-base interaction energy varied little with pH for coal pyrites than ore-pyrite. Comparison of acid-base interaction energy with zeta-potential measurements shows a good correlation between the minimum in acid-base interaction energy and the pHpzc.
