In this paper analytical expressions for optimal Vdd and Vth to minimize energy for a given speed constraint are derived. These expressions are based on the EKV model for transistors and are valid in both strong inversion and sub threshold regions. The effect of gate leakage on the optimal Vdd and Vth is analyzed. A new gradient based algorithm for controlling Vdd and Vth based on delay and power monitoring results is proposed. A Vdd-Vth controller which uses the algorithm to dynamically control the supply and threshold voltage of a representative logic block (sum of absolute difference computation of an MPEG decoder) is designed. Simulation results using 65 nm predictive technology models are given.

Many optimal control problems are characterized by their multiple performance measures that are often noncommensurable and competing with each other. The presence of multiple objectives in a problem usually give rise to a set of optimal solutions, largely known as Pareto-optimal solutions. Evolutionary algorithms have been recognized to be well suited for multi-objective optimization because of their capability to evolve a set of nondominated solutions distributed along the Pareto front. This has led to the development of many evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms among which Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA and its enhanced version NSGA-II) has been found effective in solving a wide variety of problems. Recently, we reported a genetic algorithm based technique for solving dynamic single-objective optimization problems, with single as well as multiple control variables, that appear in fed-batch bioreactor applications. The purpose of this study is to extend this methodology for solution of multi-objective optimal control problems under the framework of NSGA-II. The applicability of the technique is illustrated by solving two optimal control problems, taken from literature, which have usually been solved by several methods as single-objective dynamic optimization problems. This paper presents the capability of the neural networks as a computational tool for solving constrained optimization problem, arising in routing algorithms for the present day communication networks. The application of neural networks in the optimum routing problem, in case of packet switched computer networks, where the goal is to minimize the average delays in the communication have been addressed. The effectiveness of neural network is shown by the results of simulation of a neural design to solve the shortest path problem. Simulation model of neural network is shown to be utilized in an optimum routing algorithm known as flow deviation algorithm. It is also shown that the model will enable the routing algorithm to be implemented in real time and also to be adaptive to changes in link costs and network topology. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Alopex is a correlation-based gradient-free optimization technique useful in many learning problems. However, there are no analytical results on the asymptotic behavior of this algorithm. This article presents a new version of Alopex that can be analyzed using techniques of two timescale stochastic approximation method. It is shown that the algorithm asymptotically behaves like a gradient-descent method, though it does not need (or estimate) any gradient information. It is also shown, through simulations, that the algorithm is quite effective.

Frequent accesses to the register file make it one of the major sources of energy consumption in ILP architectures. The large number of functional units connected to a large unified register file in VLIW architectures make power dissipation in the register file even worse because of the need for a large number of ports. High power dissipation in a relatively smaller area occupied by a register file leads to a high power density in the register file and makes it one of the prime hot-spots. This makes it highly susceptible to the possibility of a catastrophic heatstroke. This in turn impacts the performance and cost because of the need for periodic cool down and sophisticated packaging and cooling techniques respectively. Clustered VLIW architectures partition the register file among clusters of functional units and reduce the number of ports required thereby reducing the power dissipation. However, we observe that the aggregate accesses to register files in clustered VLIW architectures (and associated energy consumption) become very high compared to the centralized VLIW architectures and this can be attributed to a large number of explicit inter-cluster communications. Snooping based clustered VLIW architectures provide very limited but very fast way of inter-cluster communication by allowing some of the functional units to directly read some of the operands from the register file of some of the other clusters. In this paper, we propose instruction scheduling algorithms that exploit the limited snooping capability to reduce the register file energy consumption on an average by 12% and 18% and improve the overall performance by 5% and 11% for a 2-clustered and a 4-clustered machine respectively, over an earlier state-of-the-art clustered scheduling algorithm when evaluated in the context of snooping based clustered VLIW architectures.

Miniaturization of devices and the ensuing decrease in the threshold voltage has led to a substantial increase in the leakage component of the total processor energy consumption. Relatively simpler issue logic and the presence of a large number of function units in the VLIW and the clustered VLIW architectures attribute a large fraction of this leakage energy consumption in the functional units. However, functional units are not fully utilized in the VLIW architectures because of the inherent variations in the ILP of the programs. This underutilization is even more pronounced in the context of clustered VLIW architectures because of the contentions for the limited number of slow intercluster communication channels which lead to many short idle cycles. In the past, some architectural schemes have been proposed to obtain leakage energy bene .ts by aggressively exploiting the idleness of functional units. However, presence of many short idle cycles cause frequent transitions from the active mode to the sleep mode and vice-versa and adversely a ffects the energy benefits of a purely hardware based scheme. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a compiler instruction scheduling algorithm that assist such a hardware based scheme in the context of VLIW and clustered VLIW architectures. The proposed scheme exploits the scheduling slacks of instructions to orchestrate the functional unit mapping with the objective of reducing the number of transitions in functional units thereby keeping them off for a longer duration. The proposed compiler-assisted scheme obtains a further 12% reduction of energy consumption of functional units with negligible performance degradation over a hardware-only scheme for a VLIW architecture. The benefits are 15% and 17% in the context of a 2-clustered and a 4-clustered VLIW architecture respectively. Our test bed uses the Trimaran compiler infrastructure.

Accurate estimation of mass transport parameters is necessary for overall design and evaluation processes of the waste disposal facilities. The mass transport parameters, such as effective diffusion coefficient, retardation factor and diffusion accessible porosity, are estimated from observed diffusion data by inverse analysis. Recently, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been used to develop inverse model for estimating these parameters that alleviated existing limitations in the inverse analysis. However, PSO solver yields different solutions in successive runs because of the stochastic nature of the algorithm and also because of the presence of multiple optimum solutions. Thus the estimated mean solution from independent runs is significantly different from the best solution. In this paper, two variants of the PSO algorithms are proposed to improve the performance of the inverse analysis. The proposed algorithms use perturbation equation for the gbest particle to gain information around gbest region on the search space and catfish particles in alternative iterations to improve exploration capabilities. Performance comparison of developed solvers on synthetic test data for two different diffusion problems reveals that one of the proposed solvers, CPPSO, significantly improves overall performance with improved best, worst and mean fitness values. The developed solver is further used to estimate transport parameters from 12 sets of experimentally observed diffusion data obtained from three diffusion problems and compared with published values from the literature. The proposed solver is quick, simple and robust on different diffusion problems. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a decentralized/peer-to-peer architecture-based parallel version of the vector evaluated particle swarm optimization (VEPSO) algorithm for multi-objective design optimization of laminated composite plates using message passing interface (MPI). The design optimization of laminated composite plates being a combinatorially explosive constrained non-linear optimization problem (CNOP), with many design variables and a vast solution space, warrants the use of non-parametric and heuristic optimization algorithms like PSO. Optimization requires minimizing both the weight and cost of these composite plates, simultaneously, which renders the problem multi-objective. Hence VEPSO, a multi-objective variant of the PSO algorithm, is used. Despite the use of such a heuristic, the application problem, being computationally intensive, suffers from long execution times due to sequential computation. Hence, a parallel version of the PSO algorithm for the problem has been developed to run on several nodes of an IBM P720 cluster. The proposed parallel algorithm, using MPI's collective communication directives, establishes a peer-to-peer relationship between the constituent parallel processes, deviating from the more common master-slave approach, in achieving reduction of computation time by factor of up to 10. Finally we show the effectiveness of the proposed parallel algorithm by comparing it with a serial implementation of VEPSO and a parallel implementation of the vector evaluated genetic algorithm (VEGA) for the same design problem. The q-Gaussian distribution results from maximizing certain generalizations of Shannon entropy under some constraints. The importance of q-Gaussian distributions stems from the fact that they exhibit power-law behavior, and also generalize Gaussian distributions. In this paper, we propose a Smoothed Functional (SF) scheme for gradient estimation using q-Gaussian distribution, and also propose an algorithm for optimization based on the above scheme. Convergence results of the algorithm are presented. Performance of the proposed algorithm is shown by simulation results on a queuing model.

In this paper, we propose a cooperative particle swarm optimization (CPSO) based channel estimation/equalization scheme for multiple-input multiple-output zero-padded single-carrier (MIMO-ZPSC) systems with large dimensions in frequency selective channels. We estimate the channel state information at the receiver in time domain using a PSO based algorithm during training phase. Using the estimated channel, we perform information symbol detection in the frequency domain using FFT based processing. For this detection, we use a low complexity OLA (OverLap Add) likelihood ascent search equalizer which uses minimum mean square (MMSE) equalizer solution as the initial solution. Multiple iterations between channel estimation and data detection are carried out which significantly improves the mean square error and bit error rate performance of the receiver.

Yaw rate of a vehicle is highly influenced by the lateral forces generated at the tire contact patch to attain the desired lateral acceleration, and/or by external disturbances resulting from factors such as crosswinds, flat tire or, split-μ braking. The presence of the latter and the insufficiency of the former may lead to undesired yaw motion of a vehicle. This paper proposes a steer-by-wire system based on fuzzy logic as yaw-stability controller for a four-wheeled road vehicle with active front steering. The dynamics governing the yaw behavior of the vehicle has been modeled in MATLAB/Simulink. The fuzzy controller receives the yaw rate error of the vehicle and the steering signal given by the driver as inputs and generates an additional steering angle as output which provides the corrective yaw moment. The results of simulations with various drive input signals show that the yaw stability controller using fuzzy logic proposed in the current study has a good performance in situations involving unexpected yaw motion. The yaw rate errors of a vehicle having the proposed controller are notably smaller than an uncontrolled vehicle's, and the vehicle having the yaw stability controller recovers lateral distance and desired yaw rate more quickly than the uncontrolled vehicle.

This paper investigates a novel approach for point matching of multi-sensor satellite imagery. The feature (corner) points extracted using an improved version of the Harris Corner Detector (HCD) is matched using multi-objective optimization based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA). An objective switching approach to optimization that incorporates an angle criterion, distance condition and point matching condition in the multi-objective fitness function is applied to match corresponding corner-points between the reference image and the sensed image. The matched points obtained in this way are used to align the sensed image with a reference image by applying an affine transformation. From the results obtained, the performance of the image registration is evaluated and compared with existing methods, namely Nearest Neighbor-Random SAmple Consensus (NN-Ran-SAC) and multi-objective Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO). From the performed experiments it can be concluded that the proposed approach is an accurate method for registration of multi-sensor satellite imagery. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Among the multiple advantages and applications of remote sensing, one of the most important uses is to solve the problem of crop classification, i.e., differentiating between various crop types. Satellite images are a reliable source for investigating the temporal changes in crop cultivated areas. In this letter, we propose a novel bat algorithm (BA)-based clustering approach for solving crop type classification problems using a multispectral satellite image. The proposed partitional clustering algorithm is used to extract information in the form of optimal cluster centers from training samples. The extracted cluster centers are then validated on test samples. A real-time multispectral satellite image and one benchmark data set from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) repository are used to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the BA is compared with two other nature-inspired metaheuristic techniques, namely, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. The performance is also compared with the existing hybrid approach such as the BA with K-means. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the BA can be successfully applied to solve crop type classification problems.

Algorithms for planning quasistatic attitude maneuvers based on the Jacobian of the forward kinematic mapping of fully-reversed (FR) sequences of rotations are proposed in this paper. An FR sequence of rotations is a series of finite rotations that consists of initial rotations about the axes of a body-fixed coordinate frame and subsequent rotations that undo these initial rotations. Unlike the Jacobian of conventional systems such as a robot manipulator, the Jacobian of the system manipulated through FR rotations is a null matrix at the identity, which leads to a total breakdown of the traditional Jacobian formulation. Therefore, the Jacobian algorithm is reformulated and implemented so as to synthesize an FR sequence for a desired rotational displacement. The Jacobian-based algorithm presented in this paper identifies particular six-rotation FR sequences that synthesize desired orientations. We developed the single-step and the multiple-step Jacobian methods to accomplish a given task using six-rotation FR sequences. The single-step Jacobian method identifies a specific FR sequence for a given desired orientation and the multiple-step Jacobian algorithm synthesizes physically feasible FR rotations on an optimal path. A comparison with existing algorithms verifies the fast convergence ability of the Jacobian-based algorithm. Unlike closed-form solutions to the inverse kinematics problem, the Jacobian-based algorithm determines the most efficient FR sequence that yields a desired rotational displacement through a simple and inexpensive numerical calculation. The procedure presented here is useful for those motion planning problems wherein the Jacobian is singular or null.
