In contrast to earlier observations on various solitary wave propagations, especially those bifurcated by the compressive and rarefactive solitary waves, the existence of spiky and explosive solitary waves is here believed to arise because of the presence of free and trapped electrons. So far, very few studies have been carried out to satisfactorily explain the presence of the solitary waves in space as observed by satellites. It is also attempted to highlight the probable impact on the various solitary wave propagations in a generalized multi-component, inhomogeneous plasma upon consideration of a relativistic treatment. It is expected that such a treatment will prove the existence of the solitary waves most expeditiously and exhibit the presence of chaos therein, thus giving a suitable explanation to the observations of various forms of spiky and explosive solitary waves in space-plasma. Optical UBVRI photometry and medium-resolution spectroscopy of the Type Ib supernova SN 2009jf, during the period from similar to -15 to +250 d, with respect to the B maximum are reported. The light curves are broad, with an extremely slow decline. The early post-maximum decline rate in the V band is similar to SN 2008D; however, the late-phase decline rate is slower than other Type Ib supernovae studied. With an absolute magnitude of M-V = -17.96 +/- 0.19 at peak, SN 2009jf is a normally bright supernova. The peak bolometric luminosity and the energy deposition rate via the 56Ni -> 56Co chain indicate that similar to 0.17+0.03(-0.03) M-circle dot of 56Ni was ejected during the explosion. The He i 5876 A line is clearly identified in the first spectrum of day similar to -15, at a velocity of similar to 16 000 km s-1. The O i] 6300-6364 A line seen in the nebular spectrum has a multipeaked and asymmetric emission profile, with the blue peak being stronger. The estimated flux in this line implies that greater than or similar to 1.34 M-circle dot oxygen was ejected. The slow evolution of the light curves of SN 2009jf indicates the presence of a massive ejecta. The high expansion velocity in the early phase and broader emission lines during the nebular phase suggest it to be an explosion with a large kinetic energy. A simple qualitative estimate leads to the ejecta mass of M-ej = 4-9 M-circle dot and kinetic energy E-K = 3-8 x 1051 erg. The ejected mass estimate is indicative of an initial main-sequence mass of greater than or similar to 20-25 M-circle dot.

a-Si:H/InSb structures have been fabricated by glow discharge deposition of a-Si on bulk InSb substrates in hydrogen atmosphere. The structure shows interesting switching properties, toggling between a high resistance and a conducting state with OFF to ON resistance ratio of 10(6) at remarkably low threshold voltages of 0.3 V at room temperature. The low threshold voltage for this structure, as compared to the higher switching threshold of about 30 V for other a-Si based structures, has been achieved by the use of InSb as a substrate, capable of high carrier injection. Simple and rapid HPLC, GC, and TLC procedures have been developed for detection and determination of nimesulide, a non-pharmacopeial drug, in preformulation and dosage form. Use of these techniques has enabled separation of impurities and the precursor in the bulk material and in formulations. Isocratic reversed-phase HPLC was performed on a C-18 column with methanol-water-acetic acid, 67:32:1 (v/v), as mobile phase and UV detection at 230 nm. Calibration curves were linear over the concentration range 100-1000 mug mL(-1) with a good correlation coefficient (0.9993) and a coefficient of variation of 1.5%. Gas chromatography was performed on an OV-17 packed column with temperature programming and flame-ionization detection. The lower limit of determination by HPLC and GC was 4 ppm. Thin-layer chromatography of nimesulide was performed on silica gel G with toluene-ethyl acetate, 8:2, as mobile phase. Stability testing of the drug was performed under different temperature, humidity, and UV-radiation conditions.

Guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C) is a membrane-associated form of guanylyl cyclase and serves as the receptor for the heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) peptide and endogenous ligands guanylin, uroguanylin, and lymphoguanylin. The major site of expression of GC-C is the intestinal epithelial cell, although GC-C is also expressed in extraintestinal tissue such as the kidney, airway epithelium, perinatal liver, stomach, brain, and adrenal glands. Binding of ligands to GC-C leads to accumulation of intracellular cGMP, the activation of protein kinases G and A, and phosphorylation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a chloride channel that regulates salt and water secretion. We examined the expression of GC-C and its ligands in various tissues of the reproductive tract of the rat. Using reverse transcriptase and the polymerase chain reaction, we demonstrated the presence of GC-C, uroguanylin, and guanylin mRNA in both male and female reproductive organs. Western blot analysis using a monoclonal antibody to GC-C revealed the presence of differentially glycosylated forms of GC-C in the caput and cauda epididymis. Exogenous addition of uroguanylin to minced epididymal tissue resulted in cGMP accumulation, suggesting an autocrine or endocrine activation of GC-C in this tissue. Immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated expression of GC-C in the tubular epithelial cells of both the caput epididymis and cauda epididymis. Our results suggest that the GC-C signaling pathway could converge on CFTR in the epididymis and perhaps control fluid and ion balance for optimal sperm maturation and storage in this tissue.

An AB(2) monomer, 1-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-3,5-bis-(methoxymethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene, was synthesized from mesitol and melt-polycondensed in the presence of an acid catalyst via a transetherification process at 145-150 degreesC to yield a soluble, moderately high molecular weight hyperbranched polyether. The degree of branching in the polymer was calculated to be 0.78 by a comparison of its NMR spectrum with that of an appropriately designed model compound. The weight-average molecular weight of the hyperbranched polymer was determined to be 64,600 (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight = 5.2) by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) in CHCl3, with polystyrene standards. The origin of the broad molecular weight distribution, which could either be intrinsic to such hyperbranched structures or be due to structural heterogeneity, was further probed by the fractionation of the samples by SEC and by the subjection of each fraction to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectral analysis. The mass spectral analysis suggested the presence of two primary types of species: one corresponding to the simple branched structure and the other to macrocyclics. Interestingly, from the relative intensities of the two peaks, it was apparent that cyclization became favorable at higher conversions in the melt transetherification process. This is the first report on the analysis of random block polysulfide copolymers containing different amounts of repeating units in the copolymer backbone, which has been studied by direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DPMS) and by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The homopolymers such as poly(ethylene sulfide) (PES), poly(styrene sulfide) (PSS), and two random copolymers, viz., poly(ethylene sulfide(x)-co-styrene sulfide(y)) [copolymer I (x = y = 0.5) and copolymer II (x = 0.74, y = 0.26)] were investigated by both DPMS and Py-GC/MS (except copolymer II) techniques. In the case of copolymer I, the thermal degradation products of SE1, SE2, S-2, and S2E (S = styrene sulfide, E = ethylene sulfide) were detected in DPMS, whereas the formation of SE1 and SE2 were observed by Py-GC/MS technique. However, for copolymer II, SE3 was also found along with SE1, SE2, S-2, and S2E in DPMS. The formation of additional product (SE3) observed in copolymer II could be due to an increase in the block length formed during copolymerization. Further, a comparative study on thermal degradation of PES, poly(ethylene disulfide) (PEDS), and poly(ethylene tetrasulfide) (PETS) were investigated by Py-GC/MS. The pyrolysis products detected by both DPMS and Py-GC/MS indicates that the thermal decomposition of these polymers yield cyclic sulfides through an intramolecular exchange or by backbiting processes. The linear products with thiol and vinyl groups were also observed by Py-GC/MS along with the cyclic products via carbon hydrogen transfer reaction.

After initiation of transcription, a number of proteins participate during elongation and termination modifying the properties of the RNA polymerase (RNAP). Gre factors are one such group conserved across bacteria. They regulate transcription by projecting their N-terminal coiled-coil domain into the active center of RNAP through the secondary channel and stimulating hydrolysis of the newly synthesized RNA in backtracked elongation complexes. Rv1080c is a putative gre factor (MtbGre) in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The protein enhanced the efficiency of promoter clearance by lowering abortive transcription and also rescued arrested and paused elongation complexes on the GC rich mycobacterial template. Although MtbGre is similar in domain organization and shares key residues for catalysis and RNAP interaction with the Gre factors of Escherichia coli, it could not complement an E. coli gre deficient strain. Moreover, MtbGre failed to rescue E. coli RNAP stalled elongation complexes, indicating the importance of specific protein-protein interactions for transcript cleavage. Decrease in the level of MtbGre reduced the bacterial survival by several fold indicating its essential role in mycobacteria. Another Gre homolog, Rv3788 was not functional in transcript cleavage activity indicating that a single Gre is sufficient for efficient transcription of the M. tuberculosis genome.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) technique has been employed to study the optical properties of GaSb after deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). CL images recorded at various depths in the samples clearly show passivation of extended defects on the surface as well as in the bulk region. The passivation of various recombination centres in the bulk is attributed to formation of hydrogen-impurity complexes by diffusion of hydrogen ions from the plasma. Enhancement in luminescence intensity is seen due to passivation of non-radiative recombination centres. The passivation efficiency is found to improve with increase in a-Si:H deposition temperature.

Structural and electrical properties of Eu2O3 films grown on Si(100) in 500–600 °C temperature range by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition are reported. As-grown films also possess the impurity Eu1−xO phase, which has been removed upon annealing in O2 ambient. Film’s morphology comprises uniform spherical mounds (40–60 nm). Electrical properties of the films, as examined by capacitance-voltage measurements, exhibit fixed oxide charges in the range of −1.5×1011 to −6.0×1010 cm−2 and dielectric constant in the range of 8–23. Annealing has resulted in drastic improvement of their electrical properties. Effect of oxygen nonstoichiometry on the film’s property is briefly discussed.

Most of the modern distance relays are designed to avoid overreaching due to the transient d.c. component of the fault current, whereas a more likely source of transients in e.h.v. systems is the oscillatory discharge of the system charging current into the fault. Until now attempts have not been made to reproduce these transients in the laboratory. This paper describes an analogue and an accurate digital simulation of these harmonic transients. The dynamic behaviour of a typical polarised mho-type relay is analysed, and results are presented. The paper also advocates the use of active filters for filtering the harmonics associated with e.h.v. system, and hence, to improve the speed of response and accuracy of the protective relays.

The paper presents an analysis of ferro-oscillations in capacitor voltage transformers and series-compensated e.h.v. lines. The dual-input describing function is adopted to show the regions of existence and the influence of system parameters on such oscillations. A complete analytical method suitable for digital computation has been developed for determining the amplitudes of these oscillations.

An extension of Rizk's analysis to cover any type of switching is presented for calculating the residual current and recovery voltage in a singlephase switched transmission system. Equations for the determination of the current and voltage are shown, and the method has been used for the analysis of a series- and shunt-compensated line.Three possible switching methods for the effective control of the recovery voltage and residual current are discussed: normal switching, switching at the ends of the line and switching of the series capacitors.
