Frequency-domain scheduling and rate adaptation enable next-generation orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular systems such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE) to achieve significantly higher spectral efficiencies. LTE uses a pragmatic combination of several techniques to reduce the channel-state feedback that is required by a frequency-domain scheduler. In the subband-level feedback and user-selected subband feedback schemes specified in LTE, the user reduces feedback by reporting only the channel quality that is averaged over groups of resource blocks called subbands. This approach leads to an occasional incorrect determination of rate by the scheduler for some resource blocks. In this paper, we develop closed-form expressions for the throughput achieved by the feedback schemes of LTE. The analysis quantifies the joint effects of three critical components on the overall system throughput-scheduler, multiple-antenna mode, and the feedback scheme-and brings out its dependence on system parameters such as the number of resource blocks per subband and the rate adaptation thresholds. The effect of the coarse subband-level frequency granularity of feedback is captured. The analysis provides an independent theoretical reference and a quick system parameter optimization tool to an LTE system designer and theoretically helps in understanding the behavior of OFDMA feedback reduction techniques when operated under practical system constraints.

Chronic recording of neural signals is indispensable in designing efficient brain–machine interfaces and to elucidate human neurophysiology. The advent of multichannel micro-electrode arrays has driven the need for electronics to record neural signals from many neurons. The dynamic range of the system can vary over time due to change in electrode–neuron distance and background noise. We propose a neural amplifier in UMC 130 nm, 1P8M complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. It can be biased adaptively from 200 nA to 2 $mu{rm A}$, modulating input referred noise from 9.92 $mu{rm V}$ to 3.9 $mu{rm V}$. We also describe a low noise design technique which minimizes the noise contribution of the load circuitry. Optimum sizing of the input transistors minimizes the accentuation of the input referred noise of the amplifier and obviates the need of large input capacitance. The amplifier achieves a noise efficiency factor of 2.58. The amplifier can pass signal from 5 Hz to 7 kHz and the bandwidth of the amplifier can be tuned for rejecting low field potentials (LFP) and power line interference. The amplifier achieves a mid-band voltage gain of 37 dB. In vitro experiments are performed to validate the applicability of the neural low noise amplifier in neural recording systems.

A major challenge in wireless communications is overcoming the deleterious effects of fading, a phenomenon largely responsible for the seemingly inevitable dropped call. Multiple-antennas communication systems, commonly referred to as MIMO systems, employ multiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver, thereby creating a multitude of signalling pathways between transmitter and receiver. These multiple pathways give the signal a diversity advantage with which to combat fading. Apart from helping overcome the effects of fading, MIMO systems can also be shown to provide a manyfold increase in the amount of information that can be transmitted from transmitter to receiver. Not surprisingly,MIMO has played, and continues to play, a key role in the advancement of wireless communication.Space-time codes are a reference to a signalling format in which information about the message is dispersed across both the spatial (or antenna) and time dimension. Algebraic techniques drawing from algebraic structures such as rings, fields and algebras, have been extensively employed in the construction of optimal space-time codes that enable the potential of MIMO communication to be realized, some of which have found their way into the IEEE wireless communication standards. In this tutorial article, reflecting the authors’interests in this area, we survey some of these techniques.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and Long Period Grating (LPG) chemical sensors are one of the most exciting developments in the field of optical fiber sensors. In this paper we have proposed a simple and effective chemical sensor based on FBG and LPG techniques for detecting the traces of cadmium (Cd) in drinking water at ppm level. The sensitiveness of these two has been compared. Also, these results have been compared with the results obtained by sophisticated spectroscopic atomic absorption and emission spectrometer instruments. For proper designing of FBG to act as a concentration sensor, the cladding region of the grating has been etched using HF solution. We have characterized the FBG concentration sensor sensitivities for different solutions of Cd concentrations varying from 0.01 ppm to 0.04 ppm and observed reflected spectrum in FBG and transmitted spectrum in LPG using Optical Spectrum Analyzer. Proper reagents have been used in the solutions for detection of the Cd species. The overall shift in wavelength is 10 nm in case of LPG and the shift of Bragg wavelength is 0.07 nm in case of FBG for 0.01-0.04 ppm concentrations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Receive antenna selection (AS) has been shown to maintain the diversity benefits of multiple antennas while potentially reducing hardware costs. However, the promised diversity gains of receive AS depend on the assumptions of perfect channel knowledge at the receiver and slowly time-varying fading. By explicitly accounting for practical constraints imposed by the next-generation wireless standards such as training, packetization and antenna switching time, we propose a single receive AS method for time-varying fading channels. The method exploits the low training overhead and accuracy possible from the use of discrete prolate spheroidal (DPS) sequences based reduced rank subspace projection techniques. It only requires knowledge of the Doppler bandwidth, and does not require detailed correlation knowledge. Closed-form expressions for the channel prediction and estimation error as well as symbol error probability (SEP) of M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) for symbol-by-symbol receive AS are also derived. It is shown that the proposed AS scheme, after accounting for the practical limitations mentioned above, outperforms the ideal conventional single-input single-output (SISO) system with perfect CSI and no AS at the receiver and AS with conventional estimation based on complex exponential basis functions.

The basic framework and - conceptual understanding of the metallurgy of Ti alloys is strong and this has enabled the use of titanium and its alloys in safety-critical structures such as those in aircraft and aircraft engines. Nevertheless, a focus on cost-effectiveness and the compression of product development time by effectively integrating design with manufacturing in these applications, as well as those emerging in bioengineering, has driven research in recent decades towards a greater predictive capability through the use of computational materials engineering tools. Therefore this paper focuses on the complexity and variety of fundamental phenomena in this material system with a focus on phase transformations and mechanical behaviour in order to delineate the challenges that lie ahead in achieving these goals. With the rapid scaling down of the semiconductor process technology, the process variation aware circuit design has become essential today. Several statistical models have been proposed to deal with the process variation. We propose an accurate BSIM model for handling variability in 45nm CMOS technology. The MOSFET is designed to meet the specification of low standby power technology of International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS).The process parameters variation of annealing temperature, oxide thickness, halo dose and title angle of halo implant are considered for the model development. One parameter variation at a time is considered for developing the model. The model validation is done by performance matching with device simulation results and reported error is less than 10%.© (2012) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Training for receive antenna selection (AS) differs from that for conventional multiple antenna systems because of the limited hardware usage inherent in AS. We analyze and optimize the performance of a novel energy-efficient training method tailored for receive AS. In it, the transmitter sends not only pilots that enable the selection process, but also an extra pilot that leads to accurate channel estimates for the selected antenna that actually receives data. For time-varying channels, we propose a novel antenna selection rule and prove that it minimizes the symbol error probability (SEP). We also derive closed-form expressions for the SEP of MPSK, and show that the considered training method is significantly more energy-efficient than the conventional AS training method.

The dynamic range of the system is limited by background system noise which varies over time. We propose a neural amplifier in UMC 130 nm, 2P8M CMOS technology. The bandwidth of the amplifier can be tuned by the pseudo-resistor for selectively recording low field potentials (LFP) or extra cellular action potentials (EAP). The amplifier achieves a mid-band voltage gain of 37 dB and minimizes the attenuation of the signal from neuron to the gate of the input transistor. It is used in fully differential configuration to reject noise of bias circuitry and to achieve high PSRR.
