Two- and three-state models for the adsorption of organic compounds at the electrodelelectrolyte interface are proposed. Different size requirements, if any, for the neutral molecule and the adsorbing solvent are also considered. It is shown how the empirical, generalised surface layer (GSL) relationship (between the potential difference and the electrode charge) formulated by Damaskin et a / . can be understood at the molecular level.

A numerical procedure, based on the parametric differentiation and implicit finite difference scheme, has been developed for a class of problems in the boundary-layer theory for saddle-point regions. Here, the results are presented for the case of a three-dimensional stagnation-point flow with massive blowing. The method compares very well with other methods for particular cases (zero or small mass blowing). Results emphasize that the present numerical procedure is well suited for the solution of saddle-point flows with massive blowing, which could not be solved by other methods.

An analytical solution is presented for the laminar swirling flow in a tube. Attention is given to a particular type of swirling flow corresponding to a zero longitudinal acceleration parameter, with large suction at the surface. The investigation shows that in the case of very large rates of suction the velocity overshoot can be almost eliminated. This is even possible in flows with swirls which are characterized by a velocity overshoot in the longitudinal direction.

This paper presents the similarity solution for the steady incompressible laminar boundary layer flow of a micropolar fluid past an infinite wedge. The governing equations have been solved numerically using fourth orderRunge-Kutta-Gill method. The results indicate the extent to which the velocity and microrotation profiles, and the surface shear stress are influenced by coupling, microrotation, and pressure gradient parameters. The important role played by the standard length of the micropolar fluid in determining the structure of the boundary layer has also been discussed.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

The flow, heat and mass transfer problem for boundary layer swirling flow of a laminar steady compressible electrically conducting gas with variable properties through a conical nozzle and a diffuser with an applied magnetic field has been studied. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme after they have been transformed into dimensionless form using the modified Lees transformation. The results indicate that the skin friction and heat transfer strongly depend on the magnetic field, mass transfer and variation of the density-viscosity product across the boundary layer. However, the effect of the variation of the density-viscosity product is more pronounced in the case of a nozzle than in the case of a diffuser. It has been found that large swirl is required to produce strong effect on the skin friction and heat transfer. Separationless flow along the entire length of the diffuser can be obtained by applying appropriate amount of suction. The results are found to be in good agreement with those of the local nonsimilarity method, but they differ quite significantly from those of the local similarity method.

Sensing characteristics of few-layer graphenes for NO2 and humidity have been investigated with graphene samples prepared by the thermal exfoliation of graphitic oxide, conversion of nanodiamond (DG) and arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen (HG). The sensitivity for NO2 is found to be highest with DG. Nitrogen-doped HG (n-type) shows increased sensitivity for NO2 compared with pure HG. The highest sensitivity for humidity is observed with HG. Sensing characteristics of graphene have been examined for different aliphatic alcohols and the sensitivity is found to vary with the chain length and branching.

Theoretical studies have been carried out to examine internal flow choking in the inert simulators of a dual-thrust motor. Using a two-dimensional k-omega turbulence model, detailed parametric studies have been carried out to examine aerodynamic choking and the existence of a fluid throat at the transition region during the startup transient of dual-thrust motors. This code solves standard k-omega turbulence equations with shear flow corrections using a coupled second-order-implicit unsteady formulation. In the numerical study, a fully implicit finite volume scheme of the compressible, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations is employed. It was observed that, at the subsonic inflow conditions, there is a possibility of the occurrence of internal flow choking in dual-thrust motors due to the formation of a fluid throat at the beginning of the transition region induced by area blockage caused by boundary-layer-displacement thickness. It has been observed that a 55% increase in the upstream port area of the dual-thrust motor contributes to a 25% reduction in blockage factor at the transition region, which could negate the internal How choking and supplement with an early choking of the dual-thrust motor nozzle. If the height of the upstream port relative to the motor length is too small, the developing boundary layers from either side of the port can interact, leading to a choked, flow. On the other hand, if the developing boundary layers are far enough apart, then choking does not occur. The blockage factor is greater in magnitude for the choked case than for the unchoked case. More tangible explanations are presented in this paper for the boundary-layer blockage and the internal flow choking in dual-thrust motors, which hitherto has been unexplored.

Though silicon tunnel field effect transistor (TFET) has attracted attention for sub-60 mV/decade subthreshold swing and very small OFF current (IOFF), its practical application is questionable due to low ON current (ION) and complicated fabrication process steps. In this paper, a new n-type classical-MOSFET-alike tunnel FET architecture is proposed, which offers sub-60 mV/decade subthreshold swing along with a significant improvement in ION. The enhancement in ION is achieved by introducing a thin strained SiGe layer on top of the silicon source. Through 2D simulations it is observed that the device is nearly free from short channel effect (SCE) and its immunity towards drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL) increases with increasing germanium mole fraction. It is also found that the body bias does not change the drive current but after body current gets affected. An ION of View the MathML source and a minimum average subthreshold swing of 13 mV/decade is achieved for 100 nm channel length device with 1.2 V supply voltage and 0.7 Ge mole fraction, while maintaining the IOFF in fA range.

Detailed investigations into the dielectric dispersion phenomenon in the giant dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) around room temperature revealed the existence of two successive dielectric relaxations. In the temperature domain, a new dielectric relaxation was clearly observed around 250K, in addition to the well-investigated dielectric relaxation close to 100K. The effect of sintering and doping (La3+) on the strength of these dielectric relaxations were studied in detail. The sintering temperature as well as its duration was found to have tremendous influence on the dielectric relaxation that was encountered around 250 K. This Maxwell-Wagner (M-W) type of relaxation was found to be originating from the surface layer containing the Cu-rich phase, which was ascribed to the difference in the oxygen content between the surface and the interior of the sample. Interestingly, this particular additional relaxation was not observed in La2/3Cu3Ti4O12, a low dielectric constant member of the CCTO family, in which the segregation of Cu-rich phase on the surface was absent. Indeed the correlation between the new relaxation and the presence of Cu-rich phase in CCTO ceramics was further corroborated by the absence of the same after removing the top and bottom layers. Surface texture of harder mating surfaces plays an important role during sliding against softer materials and hence the importance of characterizing the surfaces in terms of roughness parameters. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the surface texture effect of hard surfaces on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. A tribological couple made of a super purity aluminium pin against steel plate was used in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates, namely roughness and texture, were varied in the tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely, the adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture and are independent of surface roughness (R-a). Among the various surface roughness parameters, the average or the mean slope of the profile was found to explain the variations best. Under lubricated conditions, stick-slip phenomena was observed, the amplitude of which depends on the plowing component of friction. The presence of stick-slip motion under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. Field-effect transistor characteristics of few-layer graphenes prepared by several methods have been investigated in comparison with those of single-layer graphene prepared by the in situ reduction of single-layer graphene oxide. Ambipolar features have been observed with single-layer graphene and n-type behaviour with all the few-layer graphenes, the best characteristics being found with the graphene possessing 2-3 layers prepared by arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen. FETs based on boron and nitrogen doped graphene show n-type and p-type behaviour respectively. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Buoy and satellite data show pronounced subseasonal oscillations of sea surface temperature (SST) in the summertime Bay of Bengal. The SST oscillations are forced mainly by surface heat flux associated with the active break cycle of the south Asian summer monsoon. The input of freshwater (FW) from summer rain and rivers to the bay is large, but not much is known about subseasonal salinity variability. We use 2002-2007 observations from three Argo floats with 5 day repeat cycle to study the subseasonal response of temperature and salinity to surface heat and freshwater flux in the central Bay of Bengal. About 95% of Argo profiles show a shallow halocline, with substantial variability of mixed layer salinity. Estimates of surface heat and freshwater flux are based on daily satellite data sampled along the float trajectory. We find that intraseasonal variability of mixed layer temperature is mainly a response to net surface heat flux minus penetrative radiation during the summer monsoon season. In winter and spring, however, temperature variability appears to be mainly due to lateral advection rather than local heat flux. Variability of mixed layer freshwater content is generally independent of local surface flux (precipitation minus evaporation) in all seasons. There are occasions when intense monsoon rainfall leads to local freshening, but these are rare. Large fluctuations in FW appear to be due to advection, suggesting that freshwater from rivers and rain moves in eddies or filaments.

In this paper, the steady laminar viscous hypersonic flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the region of the stagnation point of an insulating blunt body in the presence of a radial magnetic field is studied by similarity solution approach, taking into account the variation of the product of density and viscosity across the boundary layer. The two coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved simultaneously using Runge-Kutta-Gill method. It has been found that the effect of the variation of the product of density and viscosity on skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number is appreciable. The skin friction coefficient increases but Nusselt number decreases as the magnetic field or the total enthalpy at the wall increases

A quartic profile in terms of the normal distance from the wall has been taken and coefficients are evaluated by satisfying one more boundary condition on the wall than the usual one. By doing so, the limitations about the Reynolds number of the quartic profile adopted by Lew (1949) has been removed. The Kármán (1921) Momentum Integral Equation has been used to evaluate the various characteristics of the flow. A comparative study of Lew's quartic profile and exponential profile together with the quartic profile of the present paper has been undertaken and the graphs for the various characteristics of the flow for a number of Mach numbers and suction coefficients have been drawn. At the end, certain conclusions of general nature about the velocity profiles have been recorded.
