The presence of lipids has been demonstrated in mycobacteriophage 13. The total lipid was composed of 69% phospholipids and 31% neutral lipids. More than two-thirds of phospholipids present in the phage were synthesized in the host prior to infection. The fatty acid composition of the phage differed markedly from that of its host, both in chain length and the degree of saturation. The phage lipid was mostly composed of saturated fatty acids of which more than 50% were short chain fatty acids. Changes in growth temperatures reflected variations in fatty acid composition, characteristic of the phage, and which were distinctly different from those of the host. Electron microscopic observations revealed that the phage has a membranous bilayer structure. The presence of lipids may facilitate the phage-host interaction especially in lipid-rich organisms like mycobacteria.

The antifungal drug, miconazole nitrate, inhibits the growth of several species of Candida. Candida albicans, one of the pathogenic species, was totally inhibited at a concentration of approximately 10 μg/ml. Endogenous respiration was unaffected by the drug at a concentration as high as 100 μg/ml, whereas exogenous respiration was markedly sensitive and inhibited to an extent of 85%. The permeability of the cell membrane was changed as evidenced by the leakage of 260-nm absorbing materials, amino acids, proteins, and inorganic cations. The results we present clearly show that the drug alters the cellular permeability, and thus the exogenous respiration becomes sensitive to the drug.

Adult fertile male bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) were continuously deprived of endogenous follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) support for 240 days by injecting them with 1 ml of characterized monkey antiserum to oFSH every 48 hr; control monkeys received during the same period normal monkey serum instead. Testicular function was assessed at periodic intervals by (a) carrying out differential counting of sperm in the ejaculate obtained and (b) determining the hyaluronidase activity as well as in vitro 3H thymidine incorporation into DNA of testicular tissue removed at biopsy. Both the quality (viability and motility) of the sperms voided and the total sperm counts showed marked decreases as a function of time of immunization, the first significant reduction being noted by 100 days. FSH deprivation affected both the biochemical parameters used to test testicular functionality they being reduced at ∼200 days by 50%-60%. The fertility of these monkeys was evaluated at periodic times after 90 days of treatment by means of mating studies. FSH deprivation had rendered the monkeys incapable of impregnating any of the females used. Testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels remained unchanged following FSH antiserum injection. With cessation of antiserum treatment testicular function and fertility were completely restored to normalcy, indicating that the observed effect was specifically due to FSH deprivation. This study thus provides conclusive evidence for the involvement of FSH in maintenance of testicular function and fertility in the adult male primate.

The transfer matrix method is known to be well suited for a complete analysis of a lumped as well as distributed element, one-dimensional, linear dynamical system with a marked chain topology. However, general subroutines of the type available for classical matrix methods are not available in the current literature on transfer matrix methods. In the present article, general expressions for various aspects of analysis-viz., natural frequency equation, modal vectors, forced response and filter performance—have been evaluated in terms of a single parameter, referred to as velocity ratio. Subprograms have been developed for use with the transfer matrix method for the evaluation of velocity ratio and related parameters. It is shown that a given system, branched or straight-through, can be completely analysed in terms of these basic subprograms, on a stored program digital computer. It is observed that the transfer matrix method with the velocity ratio approach has certain advantages over the existing general matrix methods in the analysis of one-dimensional systems.

In an earlier paper [1], it has been shown that velocity ratio, defined with reference to the analogous circuit, is a basic parameter in the complete analysis of a linear one-dimensional dynamical system. In this paper it is shown that the terms constituting velocity ratio can be readily determined by means of an algebraic algorithm developed from a heuristic study of the process of transfer matrix multiplication. The algorithm permits the set of most significant terms at a particular frequency of interest to be identified from a knowledge of the relative magnitudes of the impedances of the constituent elements of a proposed configuration. This feature makes the algorithm a potential tool in a first approach to a rational design of a complex dynamical filter. This algorithm is particularly suited for the desk analysis of a medium size system with lumped as well as distributed elements.

The nucleotide coenzyme cytidine-5-diphospho-choline is highly folded. The CMP-5 parts of the molecules in the crystal structure are strongly linked by metal ligation and hydrogen bonds leaving the phosphoryl-choline residues relatively free. Cytidine-5-diphosphoric acid exists as a zwitterion with N31 protonated. The P−O bond lengths from the anhydride bridging oxygen in the pyrophosphate are significantly different.

CRYSTAL structure determinations of nucleic acid fragments have shown that several of the conformational features found in the monomeric building blocks are also manifested at the nucleic acid level. Stereochemical variations between thymine and uracil nucleotides are therefore of interest as they can provide a structural basis for some of the differences between the conformations of DNA and RNA. X-ray studies have so far not shown any major dissimilarities between these two nucleotide species although the sugar ring of deoxyribonucleotides is found to possess greater flexibility than that in ribonucleotides. We report here the molecular structure of deoxyuridine-5'-phosphate (dUMP-5') which is not a common monomer unit of DNAs as it is replaced by its 5-methyl analogue deoxythymidine-5'-phosphate (dTMP-5'). The investigation was undertaken to help determine whether or not this implied a fundamental difference between the geometries of these two molecules.

The paper deals with the classical problem of axi-symmetric transmission of low amplitude waves through a circular pipe containing a viscous liquid. Exact governing equations are identified and solved, the radial as well as the axial component of the velocity being considered. Attention is drawn to certain fallacies underlying the conventional approach. The parameters required in the formulation of the transfer matrix for a pipe have been evaluated. In order to evaluate the response at the terminal point of a branched system for a sinusoidal input at one of the ends, a general algorithm has been developed.

Among different methods, the transmission-line or the impedance tube method has been most popular for the experimental evaluation of the acoustical impedance of any termination. The current state of method involves extrapolation of the measured data to the reflecting surface or exact locations of the pressure maxima, both of which are known to be rather tricky. The present paper discusses a method which makes use of the positions of the pressure minima and the values of the standing-wave ratio at these points. Lippert's concept of enveloping curves has been extended. The use of Smith or Beranek charts, with their inherent inaccuracy, has been altogether avoided. The existing formulas for the impedance have been corrected. Incidentally, certain other errors in the current literature have also been brought to light.Subject Classification: 85.20.

The paper deals with an exact analysis of standing waves in an impedance tube with mean flow. A method is offered for the experimental evaluation of the various wave parameters. Navier–Stokes equations have been solved for evaluating the volume velocity taking into account mean flow, viscosity, etc. The engine exhaust system has been characterized as an acoustic source with an acoustic pressure and internal impedance. A method is suggested for the evaluation of these hypothetical parameters using the exhaust pipe as an impedance tube.Subject Classification: [43]85.20; [43]20.40.

The paper deals with a rational approach to the development of general design criteria for non-dissipative vibration isolation systems. The study covers straight-through springmass systems as well as branched ones with dynamic absorbers. Various design options, such as the addition of another spring-mass pair, replacement of an existing system by one with more spring-mass pairs for the same space and material requirements, provision of one or more dynamic absorbers for the desired frequency range, etc., are investigated quantitatively by means of an algebraic algorithm which enables one to write down straightaway the velocity ratio and hence transmissibility of a linear dynamical system in terms of the constituent parameters.

In higher primates, increased circulating follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels seen during late menstrual cycle and during menstruation has been suggested to be necessary for initiation of follicular growth, recruitment of follicles and eventually culminating in ovulation of a single follicle. With a view to establish the dynamics of circulating FSH secretion with that of inhibin A (INH A) and progesterone (P-4)secretions during the menstrual cycle, blood was collected daily from bonnet monkeys beginning day 1 of the menstrual cycle up to 35 days. Serum INH A levels were low during early follicular phase, increased significantly coinciding with the mid cycle luteinizing hormone (LH) surge to reach maximal levels during the mid luteal phase before declining at the late luteal phase, essentially paralleling the pattern Of P-4 secretion seen throughout the luteal phase. Circulating FSH levels were low during early and mid luteal phases, but progressively increased during the late luteal phase and remained high for few days after the onset of menses. In another experiment, lutectomy performed during the mid luteal phase resulted in significant decrease in INH A concentration within 2 hr (58.3 +/- 2 vs. 27.3 +/- 3 pg/mL), and a 2- to 3-fold rise in circulating FSH levels by 24 hr (0.20 +/- 0.02 vs. 0.53 +/- 0.14 ng/mL) that remained high until 48 hr postlutectomy. Systemic administration of Cetrorelix (150 mu g/kg body weight), a gonadotropin releasing hormone receptor antagonist, at mid luteal phase in monkeys led to suppression of serum INH A and P-4 concentrations 24 hr post treatment, but circulating FSH levels did not change. Administration of exogenous LH, but not FSH, significantly increased INH A concentration. The results taken together suggest a tight coupling between LH and INH A secretion and that INH A is largely responsible for maintenance of low FSH concentration seen during the luteal phase. Am. J. The paper deals with a method for the evaluation of exhaust muffers with mean flow. A new set of variables, convective pressure and convective mass velocity, have been defined to replace the acoustic variables. An expression for attenuation (insertion loss) of a muffler has been proposed in terms of convective terminal impedances and a velocity ratio, on the lines of the one existing for acoustic filters. In order to evaluate the velocity ratio in terms of convective variables, transfer matrices for various muffler elements have been derived from the basic relations of energy, mass and momentum. Finally, the velocity ratiocum-transfer matrix method is illustrated for a typical straight-through muffler.
