Spectral efficiency is a key characteristic of cellular communications systems, as it quantifies how well the scarce spectrum resource is utilized. It is influenced by the scheduling algorithm as well as the signal and interference statistics, which, in turn, depend on the propagation characteristics. In this paper we derive analytical expressions for the short-term and long-term channel-averaged spectral efficiencies of the round robin, greedy Max-SINR, and proportional fair schedulers, which are popular and cover a wide range of system performance and fairness trade-offs. A unified spectral efficiency analysis is developed to highlight the differences among these schedulers. The analysis is different from previous work in the literature in the following aspects: (i) it does not assume the co-channel interferers to be identically distributed, as is typical in realistic cellular layouts, (ii) it avoids the loose spectral efficiency bounds used in the literature, which only considered the worst case and best case locations of identical co-channel interferers, (iii) it explicitly includes the effect of multi-tier interferers in the cellular layout and uses a more accurate model for handling the total co-channel interference, and (iv) it captures the impact of using small modulation constellation sizes, which are typical of cellular standards. The analytical results are verified using extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper discusses an approach for river mapping and flood evaluation based on multi-temporal time-series analysis of satellite images utilizing pixel spectral information for image clustering and region based segmentation for extracting water covered regions. MODIS satellite images are analyzed at two stages: before flood and during flood. Multi-temporal MODIS images are processed in two steps. In the first step, clustering algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used to distinguish the water regions from the non-water based on spectral information. These algorithms are chosen since they are quite efficient in solving multi-modal optimization problems. These classified images are then segmented using spatial features of the water region to extract the river. From the results obtained, we evaluate the performance of the methods and conclude that incorporating region based image segmentation along with clustering algorithms provides accurate and reliable approach for the extraction of water covered region.

Variable Endmember Constrained Least Square (VECLS) technique is proposed to account endmember variability in the linear mixture model by incorporating the variance for each class, the signals of which varies from pixel to pixel due to change in urban land cover (LC) structures. VECLS is first tested with a computer simulated three class endmember considering four bands having small, medium and large variability with three different spatial resolutions. The technique is next validated with real datasets of IKONOS, Landsat ETM+ and MODIS. The results show that correlation between actual and estimated proportion is higher by an average of 0.25 for the artificial datasets compared to a situation where variability is not considered. With IKONOS, Landsat ETM+ and MODIS data, the average correlation increased by 0.15 for 2 and 3 classes and by 0.19 for 4 classes, when compared to single endmember per class. (C) 2013 COSPAR. In this paper, we present a spectral finite element model (SFEM) using an efficient and accurate layerwise (zigzag) theory, which is applicable for wave propagation analysis of highly inhomogeneous laminated composite and sandwich beams. The theory assumes a layerwise linear variation superimposed with a global third-order variation across the thickness for the axial displacement. The conditions of zero transverse shear stress at the top and bottom and its continuity at the layer interfaces are subsequently enforced to make the number of primary unknowns independent of the number of layers, thereby making the theory as efficient as the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The spectral element developed is validated by comparing the present results with those available in the literature. A comparison of the natural frequencies of simply supported composite and sandwich beams obtained by the present spectral element with the exact two-dimensional elasticity and FSDT solutions reveals that the FSDT yields highly inaccurate results for the inhomogeneous sandwich beams and thick composite beams, whereas the present element based on the zigzag theory agrees very well with the exact elasticity solution for both thick and thin, composite and sandwich beams. A significant deviation in the dispersion relations obtained using the accurate zigzag theory and the FSDT is also observed for composite beams at high frequencies. It is shown that the pure shear rotation mode remains always evanescent, contrary to what has been reported earlier. The SFEM is subsequently used to study wavenumber dispersion, free vibration and wave propagation time history in soft-core sandwich beams with composite faces for the first time in the literature. This paper presents a newly developed wavelet spectral finite element (WFSE) model to analyze wave propagation in anisotropic composite laminate with a transverse surface crack penetrating part-through the thickness. The WSFE formulation of the composite laminate, which is based on the first-order shear deformation theory, produces accurate and computationally efficient results for high frequency wave motion. Transverse crack is modeled in wavenumber-frequency domain by introducing bending flexibility of the plate along crack edge. Results for tone burst and impulse excitations show excellent agreement with conventional finite element analysis in Abaqus (R). Problems with multiple cracks are modeled by assembling a number of spectral elements with cracks in frequency-wavenumber domain. Results show partial reflection of the excited wave due to crack at time instances consistent with crack locations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a new multiscale method which is capable of coupling atomistic and continuum domains for high frequency wave propagation analysis. The problem of non-physical wave reflection, which occurs due to the change in system description across the interface between two scales, can be satisfactorily overcome by the proposed method. We propose an efficient spectral domain decomposition of the total fine scale displacement along with a potent macroscale equation in the Laplace domain to eliminate the spurious interfacial reflection. We use Laplace transform based spectral finite element method to model the macroscale, which provides the optimum approximations for required dynamic responses of the outer atoms of the simulated microscale region very accurately. This new method shows excellent agreement between the proposed multiscale model and the full molecular dynamics (MD) results. Numerical experiments of wave propagation in a 1D harmonic lattice, a 1D lattice with Lennard-Jones potential, a 2D square Bravais lattice, and a 2D triangular lattice with microcrack demonstrate the accuracy and the robustness of the method. In addition, under certain conditions, this method can simulate complex dynamics of crystalline solids involving different spatial and/or temporal scales with sufficient accuracy and efficiency. A wavelet spectral finite element (WSFE) model is developed for studying transient dynamics and wave propagation in adhesively bonded composite joints. The adherands are formulated as shear deformable beams using the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to obtain accurate results for high frequency wave propagation. Equations of motion governing wave motion in the bonded beams are derived using Hamilton's principle. The adhesive layer is modeled as a line of continuously distributed tension/compression and shear springs. Daubechies compactly supported wavelet scaling functions are used to transform the governing partial differential equations from time domain to frequency domain. The dynamic stiffness matrix is derived under the spectral finite element framework relating the nodal forces and displacements in the transformed frequency domain. Time domain results for wave propagation in a lap joint are validated with conventional finite element simulations using Abaqus. Frequency domain spectrum and dispersion relation results are presented and discussed. The developed WSFE model yields efficient and accurate analysis of wave propagation in adhesively-bonded composite joints. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article presents the results of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) for Bangalore, South India. Analyses have been carried out considering the seismotectonic parameters of the region covering a radius of 350 km keeping Bangalore as the center. Seismic hazard parameter `b' has been evaluated considering the available earthquake data using (1) Gutenberg-Richter (G-R) relationship and (2) Kijko and Sellevoll (1989, 1992) method utilizing extreme and complete catalogs. The `b' parameter was estimated to be 0.62 to 0.98 from G-R relation and 0.87 +/- A 0.03 from Kijko and Sellevoll method. The results obtained are a little higher than the `b' values published earlier for southern India. Further, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for Bangalore region has been carried out considering six seismogenic sources. From the analysis, mean annual rate of exceedance and cumulative probability hazard curve for peak ground acceleration (PGA) and spectral acceleration (Sa) have been generated. The quantified hazard values in terms of the rock level peak ground acceleration (PGA) are mapped for 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years on a grid size of 0.5 km x 0.5 km. In addition, Uniform Hazard Response Spectrum (UHRS) at rock level is also developed for the 5% damping corresponding to 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) value of 0.121 g obtained from the present investigation is slightly lower (but comparable) than the PGA values obtained from the deterministic seismic hazard analysis (DSHA) for the same area. However, the PGA value obtained in the current investigation is higher than PGA values reported in the global seismic hazard assessment program (GSHAP) maps of Bhatia et al. (1999) for the shield area.

In this work an attempt has been made to evaluate the seismic hazard of South India (8.0 degrees N-20 degrees N; 72 degrees E-88 degrees E) based on the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). The earthquake data obtained from different sources were declustered to remove the dependent events. A total of 598 earthquakes of moment magnitude 4 and above were obtained from the study area after declustering, and were considered for further hazard analysis. The seismotectonic map of the study area was prepared by considering the faults, lineaments and the shear zones in the study area which are associated with earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above. For assessing theseismic hazard, the study area was divided into small grids of size 0.1 degrees x0.1 degrees, and the hazard parameters were calculated at the centre of each of these grid cells by considering all the seismic sources with in a radius of 300 km. Rock level peak horizontal acceleration (PHA) and spectral acceleration (SA) values at 1 corresponding to 10% and 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years have been calculated for all the grid points. The contour maps showing the spatial variation of these values are presented here. Uniform hazard response spectrum (UHRS) at rock level for 5% damping and 10% and 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years were also developed for all the grid points. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) at surface level was calculated for the entire South India for four different site classes. These values can be used to find the PGA values at any site in South India based on site class at that location. Thus, this method can be viewed as a simplified method to evaluate the PGA values at any site in the study area.

A detailed analysis of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of C-2 aryl and alkyl/desalkyl substituted isomeric exo- and endo-5-methylbicyclo[3.2.1]octane-6,8-diones is presented. The chemical shift of the C-5 angular methyl, the C-2 alkyl/olefinic (C-10)/C-2 methine protons, the aromatic proton shieldings and the characteristic AMX and ABX spectral pattern of the ketomethylene and bridgehead protons were found to be sensitive to the phenyl ring orientation (anisotropy). These distinctive features could be used for configurational distinction for this class of compounds. With increasing ortho-methoxy substitution on the phenyl ring, considerable deshilelding of the bridgehead proton was observed (ca. 0.6 ppm). Absence of the C-2 alkyl group in the desalkyl isomers resulted in substantial changes in the chemical shifts of different protons. A study of the NMR spectra of the corresponding bicyclic compounds with C-2 methoxy/hydroxy substitution instead of the aryl group revealed that the anisotropy of the phenyl ring and the electronegative oxygen substituents have opposite effects. The 13C NMR spectral assignment of each carbon resonance of C-2 aryl and alkyl/desalkyl substituted isomeric exo- and endo-5-methylbicyclo[3.2.1]octane-6,8-diones and the corresponding C-2 methoxy/hydroxy/chloro and methyl bicyclic compounds are reported. Additional ortho-methoxy substitution on the phenyl ring was found to produce considerable high field shifts of the C-10 and C-1 carbon resonances. A high-field shift was observed for the C-6 and C-8 carbonyl carbons, presumably due to 1,3-dicarbonyl interactions. The chemical shifts of C-1 aromatic, C-10 alkyl and C-2 carbons, which are sensitive to exo/endo isomerism, could be utilized in differentiating a pair of isomers.

Using analysis-by-synthesis (AbS) approach, we develop a soft decision based switched vector quantization (VQ) method for high quality and low complexity coding of wideband speech line spectral frequency (LSF) parameters. For each switching region, a low complexity transform domain split VQ (TrSVQ) is designed. The overall rate-distortion (R/D) performance optimality of new switched quantizer is addressed in the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based parametric framework. In the AbS approach, the reduction of quantization complexity is achieved through the use of nearest neighbor (NN) TrSVQs and splitting the transform domain vector into higher number of subvectors. Compared to the current LSF quantization methods, the new method is shown to provide competitive or better trade-off between R/D performance and complexity.

Special switching sequences can be employed in space-vector-based generation of pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) waveforms for voltage-source inverters. These sequences involve switching a phase twice, switching the second phase once, and clamping the third phase in a subcycle. Advanced bus-clamping PWM (ABCPWM) techniques have been proposed recently that employ such switching sequences. This letter studies the spectral properties of the waveforms produced by these PWM techniques. Further, analytical closed-form expressions are derived for the total rms harmonic distortion due to these techniques. It is shown that the ABCPWM techniques lead to lower distortion than conventional space vector PWM and discontinuous PWM at higher modulation indexes. The findings are validated on a 2.2-kW constant $V/f$ induction motor drive and also on a 100-kW motor drive.

In this paper we give the performance of MQAM OFDM based WLAN in presence of single and multiple channels Zigbee interference. An analytical model for getting symbol error rate (SER) in presence of single and multiple channel Zigbee interference in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel for MQAM OFDM system is given. Simulation results are compared with analytical symbol error rate (SER) of the MQAM-OFDM system. For analysis we have modeled the Zigbee interference using the power spectral density (PSD) of OQPSK modulation and finding the average interference power for each sub-carrier of the OFDM system. Then we have averaged the SER over all WLAN sub-carriers. Simulations closely match with the analytical models. It is seen from simulation and analytical results that performance of WLAN is severely affected by Zigbee interference. Symbol error rate (SER) for 16QAM and 64QAM OFDM system is of order of 10(-2) for SIR (signal to interference ratio) of 20dB and 30dB respectively in presence of single Zigbee interferer inside the WLAN frequency band for Rayleigh fading channel. For SIR values more than 30dB and 40dB the SER approaches the SER without interference for 16QAM and 64QAM OFDM system respectively.

In this paper we propose and analyze a novel racetrack resonator based vibration sensor for inertial grade application. The resonator is formed with an Anti Resonance Reflecting Optical Waveguide (ARROW) structure which offers the advantage of low loss and single mode propagation. The waveguide is designed to operate at 1310nm and TM mode of propagation since the Photo-elastic co-efficient is larger than TE mode in a SiO2/ Si3N4/ SiO2. The longer side of the resonator is placed over a cantilever beam with a proof mass. A single bus waveguide is coupled to the resonator structure. When the beam vibrates the resonator arm at the foot of the cantilever experiences maximum stress. Due to opto-mechanical coupling the effective refractive index of the resonator changes hence the resonance wavelength shifts. The non uniform cantilever beam has a dimension of 1.75mm X 0.45mm X 0.020mm and the proof mass has a dimension of 3mm X 3mm X 0.380mm. The proof mass lowers the natural frequency of vibration to 410Hz, hence designed for inertial navigation application. The operating band of frequency is from DC to 100Hz and acceleration of less than 1g. The resonator has a Free Spectral Range (FSR) of 893pm and produces a phase change of 22.4mrad/g.
